Religious/Spiritual Struggles And Spiritual Resilience In Marginalised Older Adult, Holly Nelson-Becker, Michael Thomas
Religious/Spiritual Struggles And Spiritual Resilience In Marginalised Older Adult, Holly Nelson-Becker, Michael Thomas
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
Spiritual and religious struggles emerge in times where life meaning is unclear, has changed or is challenged. Resilience has been addressed in terms of psychological, social, emotional and physical capacity or competence related to struggle. However, there is a relatively sparse literature defining and addressing spiritual resilience, both what it is and how it is demonstrated. This is especially true of the oppressive and marginalised experiences of diverse older persons. This paper asks how older persons have responded to life challenge and spiritual struggle through spiritually resilient responses. It provides a foundation for the discussion of spiritual resilience in older …

Increasing Patient Enrollment In The Move Program At The Va Medical Center: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Mandy Spiers
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: This evidence-based practice project aimed to increase patient referrals to the MOVE program by educating providers about the importance and benefit of the Managing Obesity for Veterans Everywhere (MOVE) Program at the Biloxi, Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
PICOT: In obese, ambulatory care patients, what motivates increased referrals by practitioners to the MOVE Program to decrease BMI compared to the current referral system within two months?
Evidence: There was poor participation in the MOVE Program despite the high number of obese patients at the Biloxi, VA Medical Center. According to the data, only sixty of the 18,000 …

A Patient-Centered Approach To Fall Prevention, Elmer Esguerra
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: In 2019, a rural hospital in South Texas reported 102 incidents of patient falls. Although below the corporate fall rate benchmark of 2.2/1000 patient days, the hospital recognized that it was clinically significant and aimed at improving its fall prevention outcomes.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: Among adult patients in the acute care setting would the implementation of patient-centered interventions be more effective compared to the usual fall prevention interventions in reducing incidence of falls one month after implementation?
Evidence: Seven pertinent studies, which included a randomized controlled trial and a systematic review, recommended …

Developing Social Justice Skills Through Community Service-Learning In High School Social Studies, Sharehann T. Lucman
Developing Social Justice Skills Through Community Service-Learning In High School Social Studies, Sharehann T. Lucman
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Social studies teachers are presented with the challenging yet rewarding task of cultivating in their students' principles and competencies essential for democratic and social-justice-oriented citizenship. Inspired and guided by literature on social justice education and community service-learning, this study suggests that social studies teachers ought to consider integrating teaching methods that are experiential, participatory, and critical in nature. An example of such a method is community service-learning. As illustrated in this study, community service-learning activities afford students the unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills on social justice in authentic social situations.
Using a descriptive and textual analysis approach, …

It’S Not All About The Healthy Sibling: Sibling Relationships From The Perspective Of Children And Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, Katrin Boß, Gerolf Renner
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
Research on sibling relationships of chronically ill children has mostly focused on the healthy sibling. This study presents data on the quality of sibling relationships from the perspective of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF). Participants (N =75, aged 10-18) with CF from German-speaking countries completed the “Students Life Satisfaction Scale” (SLSS) and the “Questions on Life Satisfaction for Adolescents and Adults with Cystic Fibrosis” (FLZM-CF). Participants who had one sibling (n = 50) were additionally given the “Sibling Relationship Questionnaire” (SRQ). SRQ scales Warmth/Closeness and Rivalry were significantly elevated compared to normative data. Most participants had a positive …

Learning From Workforce Studies That Cut Across Social Services, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Other QIC-WD Products
Sometimes researchers, administrators and practitioners miss studies that cut across social service fields but that include child welfare workers in their samples. For example, a Canadian study by Graham, Shier, & Nicholas (2016), Workplace Congruence and Occupational Outcomes Among Social Services Workers, has relevant implications for the child welfare field. This study found that when a job setting matches an employee’s expectations regarding workload, autonomy, the working environment, and the values of the organization, there is likely to be a lower intention to leave the job and greater life satisfaction. This finding implies it is important to help new child …

Tracing Ripples: The Impact Of Parent Aces On Next Generation Development And The Moderating Role Of Parent Resilience, Laura M. Hoffman
Tracing Ripples: The Impact Of Parent Aces On Next Generation Development And The Moderating Role Of Parent Resilience, Laura M. Hoffman
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact individual well-being at a biopsychosocial level and can undermine next generation child development. Resilience is increasingly understood to be achieved through natural adaptive systems, though younger children may be more reliant on environmental adaptive systems as internal systems develop. Parent resilience is a promising moderator of early intergenerational trauma transmission but relatively unexplored in terms of safeguarding offspring developmental outcomes. The current study examined if parent ACEs impact offspring overall development and specific developmental domains at 9, 18, and 30 months, and if parent resilience moderates these effects. A series of multiple linear regression, MANOVA, …

Research-Based Course Re-Design For Human Relations In A Multicultural Society, Academic Years 2010-2012, Elizabeth J. Sandell
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
Intercultural competence is one way to describe how individuals and groups understand and adapt their behavior to cultural differences. University students can increase their intercultural competence by understanding behaviors and by experiencing cultural differences. One way to do this is by participating in a course, such as Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The course's objective was to help students in understanding their own cultural roots, as well as those of other culture groups. This study responded to questions about the impact of multicultural education on intercultural competence among undergraduates. The data set included more than 130 students who took …

Silverman, Patterson, Wang: Taking On Stereotypes To Protect Fair And Affordable Housing Policies, Robert Silverman, Kelly Patterson, Chihuangji Wang
Baldy Center Blog
Our article, “Questioning Stereotypes about U.S. Site-Based Subsidized Housing” (forthcoming in the International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis), grew out of work done with the support of a Baldy Center research grant. The research examined data for all public housing and other site-based subsidized properties in the U.S. in order to determine the veracity of long-standing stereotypes about these properties. Stereotypes about government subsidized housing have dominated public discourse since the early 1950s. In many respects, these stereotypes have penetrated debates about public policies designed to address the shortage of affordable housing and become a mainstay in American society. …

Cultural Adaptations Of Evidence Based Practices In Supporting Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Krista P. James
Cultural Adaptations Of Evidence Based Practices In Supporting Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Krista P. James
Indigenous Studies
Research shows that early identification and intervention result in a higher quality of life and contribution to society for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As society sees an ever-increasing percentage of individuals diagnosed with ASD, identification of culturally responsive, evidence-based practices is of critical importance. While the National Autism Center has provided a guide to evidence-based practices, minimal research has been done to determine if these practices are culturally relevant. This is a community-based formative research project. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the cultural appropriateness of the practices identified as "evidence-based practices" by the National Autism …
Influences Impacting Child Study Team School Social Workers Decision-Making In A New Jersey Urban District On Placement Of Students Classified Emotionally Disturbed, Pia D. Moore
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Research on students classified as Emotionally Disturbed (ED) shows that a disproportionate number of ED students are educated outside of the general education setting. In New Jersey a little more than half of students classified as ED are not educated in general education classrooms for most of their school day. The academic performance of ED students is often lower in self-contained environments than in the general education setting (Oelrich, 2012). ED students overall have poor academic and life experiences. The educational program and setting in which an ED student is primarily educated might have an impact on their current and …

Strategies For Embedding Population Health Concepts Into Nursing Education, Kasey Jordan, Saria Lofton, Elizabeth Richards
School of Nursing Faculty Publications
Advances in community and public health are needed to address contemporary health needs, particularly poor health outcomes related to the social determinants of health and inequity. Nurses are ideally placed to promote meaningful advances in community and public health, collectively referred to as population health. Nurse educators can promote a deeper understanding of core population health concepts by threading these concepts throughout the academic nursing curricula in addition to standalone population or public health courses. Strategies for incorporating population health concepts in a variety of courses can be conceptualized through the themes emphasizing context, honoring community voices, cultivating community connection, …

The Qualitative Report
This article explores methodological and ethical challenges and complexities in negotiating access with gatekeepers in research that examines Turkish perpetrators’ engagement in domestic violence interventions in the UK. This research presents the examples and conceptual information about the process of working with gatekeepers based on the sensitive research topic. This paper draws on the first author’s own experiences and the emotional impact of undertaking such sensitive research where community leaders held patriarchal beliefs. It also argues that there are challenges in building trust and rapport with gatekeepers which are related to gender power relations; stigmatisation in the community; ideologies around …
