Consequences Of The Ambiguous Insult: A Review Of Literature On Gender, Race, And Lgbtq-Based Microaggressions, Emily Halvorson
Modern Psychological Studies
For over thirty years, microaggressions have been studied for their weight on members of groups like ethnic and racial minorities, women and members of the LGBTQ community. Microaggressions are the routine, derogatory interactions like slights gestures, snubs or minor insults. Microaggressions yield physical and psychological distress to victims and communicate to marginalized groups the biases and prejudices against them harbored by majority group members. This taxonomy divides the experiences of microaggressions into the categories of gender, racial and LGBTQ-based sectors, as well as the subcategories that are relevant to the experiences of the members when faced with microaggressions.

Epics Urban Farming: Bringing Sustainable Fresh Food To Gary, Indiana, Elijah Klein
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
EPICS Urban Farming is a team of seventeen undergraduate students designing and implementing an aquaponics and food distribution system in Gary, Indiana. With the area being a food desert, most people turn to corner stores for food that is easily accessible and cheap but unhealthy. From this diet, there are quite a few widespread health concerns that the population of Gary, Indiana, faces daily. For example, obesity, diabetes, and heart conditions are some of the most common diseases that plague the community. Urban Farming is working to aid in combating these issues with the partnership of Pastor Marty Henderson, who …

Umbrella Summaries
What are assessment centers?
Assessment centers measure knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics by assessing participants’ responses to job-related simulations. Assessment centers can be used for hiring, placement, and career and skill development (Gaugler, Rosenthal, Thornton, and Bentson, 1987). Typically, participants complete a combination of in-basket, leaderless group discussion, role play, case analysis, and oral presentation exercises (Hoffman, Kennedy, LoPilato, Monahan, and Lance, 2015). Within each exercise, participants review job-relevant information and complete tasks. For the in-basket, participants are presented with documents (e.g., emails, memos, reports, requests—things that might be in an inbox) to which they provide responses and about …

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) remains an important neglected tropical disease in Costa Rica, which has one of the largest burdens of this disease in Latin America.
METHODS: We identified district-level hotspots of CL from 2006 to 2017 and conducted temporal analysis to identify where hotspots were increasing across the country.
RESULTS: Clear patterns of CL risk were detected, with persistent hotspots located in the Caribbean region, where risk was also found to be increasing over time in some areas.
CONCLUSIONS: We identify spatiotemporal hotspots, which may be used in support of the leishmaniasis plan of action …

The Relationship Between Business Intelligence And Analytics Use And Organizational Absorptive Capacity: Applying The Delone & Mclean Information Systems Success Model, Katerina Božič, Vlado Dimovski
Economic and Business Review
Building on the DeLone and McLean Information Systems (IS) success model and the knowledge-based theory of absorptive capacity, this paper examines the role of the business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) use for enhancing a firm’s absorptive capacity for knowledge creation. We collected survey data from an online and mail-delivered survey questionnaire with 97 respondents at the organizational level in the Slovenian medium- and large-sized firms from several industries. The results from the partial least squares SEM showed that the BI&A use relates significantly to absorptive capacity enhancement, thus fostering knowledge creation. Moreover, information quality and system quality are positively linked …

The Use Of Wayfinding Apps By Deafblind Travelers In An Urban Environment: Insights From Focus Groups, Amy T. Parker, Martin Swobodzinski, Tara Brown-Ogilvie, Jenna Beresheim-Kools
Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This brief report explores qualitative themes from focus groups with nine individuals who are Deafblind regarding their use of wayfinding apps to support orientation and mobility in an urban environment. Culturally responsive approaches to the design of the focus groups integrated the partnership with Deafblind communication facilitators and ProTactile approaches to solicit naturalistic inquiry on the experiences and preferences of Deafblind travelers. Thematic emergences suggest that participants benefit from various wayfinding apps for orientation and mobility in a densely populated city but they desire greater functionality, consistency of access, equity, and recognition of the unique travel demands faced by Deafblind …
Social Media Rumination: The Impact Of Materialistic Value Orientation, Keeley Hynes
Social Media Rumination: The Impact Of Materialistic Value Orientation, Keeley Hynes
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research demonstrates that ruminating on social media content is associated with greater mental distress (Yang, Holden, Carter, & Webb, 2018). However, it is unclear what factors are associated with rumination. Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework, this study examined how materialistic value orientation (MVO) predicted social media rumination in a sample of racially and socioeconomically diverse high school students at two waves of time. Those who are more materialistic value the means by which to gain possessions, and extrinsic life-goals associated with MVO are aimed at garnering external reinforcers such as money and social status (Richins & …

Education Leaders’ Perceptions Of Faculty Ethical Decision-Making: Awareness, Learning, And Change, Cheryl Burleigh
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Conversations about ethical decision-making exist in a climate of misinformation within social and political forums. The issue of ethical decision-making in the context of educational leadership within a school environment has not been recently investigated. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to examine the perceptions of education leaders who observed the processes faculty employed when ethical decision-making commenced throughout the school day. Data was collected during interviews with education leaders who answered semi-structured, open-ended questions. The findings led the leaders to self-reflect, redefining their roles as authentic leaders and a gaining a deeper understanding of school culture, …

There is no shortage of information in the time of this information explosion era. Due to information explosion the gram panchayat members are confused about the access to right information at the right time from different information sources. Thus, information seeking is most important thing and it is surely be influenced by different type factors. The study would also find the information sources, how to access and how to use these sources by the gram panchayat members of different gram panchayats under the Burdwan-I Development Block. Data has been collected from the gram panchayat members through structured questionnaire. Questionnaires were …
Teachers Writing, Healing, And Resisting, Anne Elrod Whitney
Teachers Writing, Healing, And Resisting, Anne Elrod Whitney
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
For at least the past twenty years, writing education and writing teacher education have been carried out in more and more tightly managed, neoliberally influenced policy conditions as well as worsening conditions of inequality in educational resources based on both race and on income. The result is increasingly dehumanizing conditions for teaching and learning writing. This context intersects in interesting ways with the notion of the teacher-writer. This essay re-raises and reframes the idea of the teacher-writer to open up possibilities for both resilience, and resistance-- both in teachers’ individual lives, and for teachers in the collective sense.

Maternal and pediatric delivery outcomes may vary in patients who underwent open fetal myelomeningocele repair and elected to deliver at the fetal center where their fetal intervention was performed versus at the referring physician’s hospital. A prospective cohort study of 88 patients were evaluated following in utero open fetal myelomeningocele repair at a single fetal center between the years 2011–2019. Exclusion criteria included patients that delivered within two weeks of the procedure (n = 6), or if a patient was lost to follow-up (n = 1). Of 82 patients meeting inclusion criteria, 36 (44%) patients were delivered at …

How Distinctive Should Catholic Law Schools Be?, Robert K. Vischer
How Distinctive Should Catholic Law Schools Be?, Robert K. Vischer
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
I was a teenager in the 1980s, and I was raised in evangelical Christian circles through which I was encouraged to listen to “Christian” rock music, not secular, which sometimes gave rise to some casuistic line drawing:
• Does U2 count as Christian? Yes, because of that line in Sunday Bloody Sunday about the victory Jesus won!
• How about Bob Dylan? Yes, but only during his three-album “born again” period!
• Amy Grant? Definitely, but even after she crossed over into the secular Top 40?
• Does the song need to mention Jesus? What if it mentions Jesus …

Staff voice is an important element of organizational culture, or the behavioral norms and expectations that characterize a work environment. According to the developers of the Availability Responsiveness Continuity (ARC) model, these norms and expectations direct the way employees in a particular work environment approach their work, specify priorities, and shape the way work is done. The Division of Milwaukee Child Protective Services (DMCPS) is a child welfare agency that experienced significant leadership change in recent years and, like other agencies nationwide, has struggled with a decade of staff turnover. In partnership with the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development …
Identifying Families Who May Be Struggling After Adoption Or Guardianship, Nancy Rolock
Identifying Families Who May Be Struggling After Adoption Or Guardianship, Nancy Rolock
Faculty Scholarship
Targeted prevention efforts after adoption or guardianship from foster care are intended to help families most at-risk and prior to the onset of significant issues. Most adoptive and guardianship families adjust well with supportive services in place; only a small proportion have difficulties that result in children returning to foster care after adoption or guardianship. This study examined the use of administrative data to identify families at-risk for post-permanency discontinuity. Administrative data have some utility for identifying families that may struggle, however, they provide a limited representation of risk. Caregiver survey responses in four states (n=1,670) found that families with …

Re-Envisioning Trauma Recovery: Listening And Learning From African Voices In Healing Collective Trauma, Jean Pierre Ndagijimana, Kissanet Taffere
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This paper critiques the influence of neoliberalism on mental health and the ways in which it denies the knowledge and capacities of Black African immigrants in the United States. It promotes and proposes community-driven approaches to supporting survivors of human rights abuses. The commentary is divided in two major parts: The first section discusses the impacts of monetization of Black grief, psychologization of poverty, and predatory inclusion on survivors of human rights abuses and staff within the humanitarian sector. The last section proposes more culturally relevant and humanizing healing pathways and frameworks for African immigrants in the United States. We …
Decolonizing Approaches To Human Rights And Peace Education Higher Education Curriculum, Danielle Aldawood
Decolonizing Approaches To Human Rights And Peace Education Higher Education Curriculum, Danielle Aldawood
International Journal of Human Rights Education
While the project of decolonization within higher education has become important in recent years (Kester et al., 2019), human rights and peace education specifically have undergone critique (Coysh, 2014; Al-Daraweesh and Snauwaert, 2013; Barreto, 2013; Zembylas, 2018; Williams, 2017; Cruz and Fontan, 2014). This critique has focused on the delegitimization of non-Western epistemologies around peace and human rights and the reliance on Eurocentric structures of thought and power within curricular and pedagogical practices (Kester et al., 2019). The decolonization of academic human rights curricula is the primary focus of this research; through interviews and content analysis with U.S. human rights …
