Factors Associated With Acquiring Food From A Farmers Market And Community Or Home Garden Among Primarily African American Residents From Under-Resourced Neighborhoods, Jeanette Gustat, Yu-Zhang Lee, Taylor Johnson, Keelia O'Malley, Brian Luckett, Leann Myers
Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association
Farmers markets (FMs) and community/home community gardens (C/HGs) can increase access to fresh fruit and vegetables (F/V). There are limited data on FM and C/HG utilization in African American, under-resourced communities. We explored factors associated with acquiring food from these venues. Methods: An interviewer administered, cross-sectional survey was conducted door to door in two, low-income, predominantly African American neighborhoods in New Orleans, Louisiana. Conclusions: Establishing FMs and C/HGs in low-income communities may be a viable strategy for increasing F/V consumption. Future research within low-income minority communities is needed to inform initiatives to reduce nutrition-related health disparities using FMs and C/HGs. …

This study examined the efficacy of a culturally responsive housing with services model for Asian-American older adults and persons with developmental disabilities separately, and with both for an interaction effect. Study participants, including 278 Whites and 75 Asian Americans, lived in 10 properties of public housing with services in Portland, OR. All Asian-American participants (except four) were immigrants from China, Korea, and Vietnam, and were well connected through community-based health and social services that were delivered onsite and at a nearby center by staff members who were also immigrants from these three countries. Asian-American participants were older, very poor, with …

A Broad Overview Of Solution Focused Severe Trauma & Stress Recovery Work, With The Introduction Of Two Additional Sf Instruments To Promote Thriverhood, John Henden
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
The purpose of this paper is to show how the author’s solution focused (SF) work with both adult survivors of child abuse and neglect; and, adult trauma survivors, has developed from Yvonne Dolan’s severe trauma recovery work (Dolan, 1998). Dolan’s major contribution to this way of working is acknowledged; and, her three-stage Victim – Survivor –Thriver continuum detailed, with an emphasis on the Thriver stage. Other contemporary practitioners’ work is described, in brief, also. From the author’s clinical work with survivors of trauma, over some 25 years, it has become clear that clients need to understand more fully what thriverhood …
Evaluating The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv Intervention For Women: A Pilot Study, Helen T. Yates, Orion Mowbray
Evaluating The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv Intervention For Women: A Pilot Study, Helen T. Yates, Orion Mowbray
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Women living with HIV experience a gender gap in wellness outcomes in the U.S., and women of color are particularly vulnerable to this gap. To address this, the Solution Focused Wellness for HIV (SFWH) intervention for women was created. In this paper, we report the quantitative results of the most recent SFWH pilot study. The seven-session, group intervention was provided to (N=14) women living with HIV to evaluate it for effectiveness. Results showed the intervention was associated with significant multidimensional wellness improvements between baseline and five-week follow up. Participants’ CD4 and Viral Load counts did not change significantly. To improve …

Steve De Shazer’S Theory Development, Harry Korman, Peter De Jong, Sara Smock Jordan
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
This paper traces developments in Steve de Shazer’s theoretical thinking from 1969 until his passing in 2005. After reviewing his definition of “theory,” we organize developments in his theorizing into 4 phases, distilling from each the axioms he continued to hold until his death. For each axiom, we indicate how it is foundational to an understanding of SFBT and, therefore, contributes to distinguishing SFBT from other talk therapies. We stay close to de Shazer’s writings by frequently quoting from his many articles and 6 books. We conclude with a summary of what we believe are the 6 enduring axioms of …

Section of Haematology/Oncology
Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumour in children and is a major cause of mortality and morbidity, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It has been risk-stratified on the basis of clinical (age, metastasis and extent of resection) and histological subtypes (classic, desmoplastic and anaplastic). However, recently medulloblastoma has been sub-grouped by using a variety of different genomic approaches, such as gene expression profiling, micro-ribonucleic acid profiling and methylation array into 4 groups, namely Wingless, Sonic hedgehog, Group 3 and Group 4. This new sub-grouping has important therapeutic and prognostic implications. After acute leukaemia, brain tumour is the …

Experiences Of College Sophomores' Utilization Of Counseling Services At A Faith Based University, Laurel Shaler, Lori Goss-Reaves, Jeffrey Boatner, Steve Johnson, Katherine Atkins
The Qualitative Report
We designed this qualitative research study to better understand the experiences of college students in a United States context who do not seek counseling for their perceived need for help, and to address barriers that prevent them from doing so. The results of this phenomenological study indicate three barriers: negative feelings based upon ones’ past-experience with counseling, the stigma that surrounds a need for counseling, and the messages participants received from their parents regarding counseling. This research paper will elaborate on this study and will provide helpful information related to breaking these barriers.

Studying The Impact Of Urban Densification On Social Sustainability: The Case Of Bida Bin Ammar Neighborhood In Al Ain, Uae, Lubna Mohammad Ghaffar Shekfa
Theses
As cities are under the influence of rapid development, industrialization, modernization, and globalization, a key task for local authorities, urban planners, and residents are to understand what makes a neighbourhood socially sustainable. In Al Ain City in the UAE, urban sprawl has been a persistent sustainability problem caused by low urban density and has led to the heavy reliance on private cars. To overcome this problem, urban densification as a sustainable planning approach is recommended. Al Ain 2030 Plan has adopted this approach for the redevelopment of the Asharej District. This research aims at studying the application of urban densification …
Recovery From Relinquishment: Forgiving My Birth Mother. My Journey From 1954 To Today, Christian L. Anderson
Recovery From Relinquishment: Forgiving My Birth Mother. My Journey From 1954 To Today, Christian L. Anderson
The Qualitative Report
Adoptees carry the burden of shame for being “given up, abandoned, unwanted, not right,” and birth mothers carry the weight of shame for succumbing to external pressure to relinquish their children. There is ample literature addressing recovery for both adoptees and birth mothers (Buterbaugh & Soll, 2003; Franklin, 2019; Lanier, 2020; Soll, 2005, 2013, 2014); however, there is little recognition of the co-shame and need for forgiveness. Utilizing autoethnographic methodology, I discuss the issues of misogyny prevalent in the 1950s, the “Baby Scoop Era [BSE],” and my ongoing process of forgiving my birth mother after five decades of rage. This …

Prenatal Depression And Risk Of Short Interpregnancy Interval In A Predominantly Puerto Rican Population, Sami Backley, Alex Knee, Penelope Pekow, Glenn Markenson, Katharine O White, Corina Schoen, Lisa Chasan-Taber
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Short interpregnancy interval (IPI) is associated with risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes; however, few studies have evaluated the role of depression as a risk factor for short IPI. Puerto Rican women in the United States experience disparities in adverse birth outcomes and have the highest birth rates.
Methods: We analyzed the association between prenatal depressive symptoms and IPI in Proyecto Buena Salud, a prospective cohort of predominantly Puerto Rican women in Western Massachusetts (2006–2011). Depression was measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in early, mid, and late pregnancy. We calculated follow-up time as the difference between the …

Navigating The Role Of Head Of School As Perceived By Female Heads Of National Christian School Association Schools, Jill C. Hartness
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current representation of women as heads of schools in U.S. independent schools is significantly less than that of men. With little research on independent female heads of schools, particularly in religious school communities, this qualitative study examined the perspectives of female heads of school from the National Christian School Association regarding perceptions and experiences in the leadership role within a conservative Christian school context. This study was framed through social role theory, muted group theory, authentic leadership theory, and emotional labor theory, and guided by one overarching research question: What has been the experience of a female head of …

Resilience Mediates The Relationship Between Socio-Cognitive Mindfulness And Perceived Stress In Academic Middle Managers In Higher Education, Rachel R. Slaymaker
Resilience Mediates The Relationship Between Socio-Cognitive Mindfulness And Perceived Stress In Academic Middle Managers In Higher Education, Rachel R. Slaymaker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Faculty, staff, and administrators in higher education have experienced rising stress levels due to an increasingly turbulent environment amid constant change and uncertainty. In particular, academic middle managers experience increasingly high demands and significant stressors in the ever-changing landscape of higher education. Most research that addresses stress among academic middle managers has focused on the management of stressors and emphasized the need for additional training and technical support rather than how to address adaptive challenges. However, emerging research has provided promising evidence of the positive effects of mindfulness in reducing the perception of stress and enhancing resilience, both of which …
Documenting Current Practices Of Accommodating Linguistic Needs Of Deaf Defendants, Beau Shine
Documenting Current Practices Of Accommodating Linguistic Needs Of Deaf Defendants, Beau Shine
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
Deaf defendants are an underexamined population in criminal justice research, and very few studies have examined their involvement in the criminal justice system. In addition, research on accommodating the linguistic needs of deaf defendants is sparse. Failure to accommodate the linguistic needs of deaf defendants presents several concerns, including disparate treatment and violations of ADA-guaranteed rights that may lead to inadmissible evidence, dismissals of cases, and not-guilty verdicts, as well as lawsuits and litigation, all of which create additional strain on an already overburdened system. The current study combines previous research on deaf defendants with the findings of data gathered …

U.S. imperialism in the Philippines has led to the multiple generations of diasporic conditions of colonial amnesia and systematic forgetting of history. Its impact on the Filipinx community has left unrecorded memories and voices of immigrants silenced, and considered lost to history. This study examines the relationship between U.S. colonialism and imperialism in the Philippines and the experiences of Filipinx immigration to the U.S. through a critical Indigenous feminist lens of visual imagery and storytelling. Given that many of the experiences within the Filipinx diaspora in relation to the American Empire have been systematically forgotten and erased, this study utilizes …

Ophthalmology Clinic For The Homeless In San Francisco: Experiences And Findings, Ogonna N. Nnamani Silva, Lauren Hennein, Saras Ramanathan
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Abstract
Background Homelessness is a growing area of concern for communities around the world and homeless individuals are often not connected to healthcare and, consequently, this population is often left out of crucial studies that influence the care provided at public hospitals. The main aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of eye disease, demographics, and common comorbidities of patients who utilized the student-run, institution-sponsored ophthalmology clinic for homeless individuals across a 2-year period. A secondary aim was to elucidate the role that student-run clinics can play in connecting the homeless population to healthcare and community services.
