Where Does Mentoring Matter Most? Teachers’ Perceptions Of Being Mentored During Their First Year Of Teaching And The Correlation Of Those Perceptions With Job Satisfaction Among Economically Diverse Schools, : Zachary Stephen Boyt

Theses and Dissertations

In this quantitative study, the researcher explored the relationships between new teacher mentoring and job satisfaction. Although many studies have been conducted on the link between new teacher mentoring and job satisfaction, there exists little research on whether or not there are specific mentoring activities that correlate more strongly with job satisfaction. In addition to filling that gap in the research, this study examined the extent to which job satisfaction is correlated with both mentoring activities and the mentoring relationship. Over 600 teachers across nine districts plus a regional center on Long Island were surveyed. The schools surveyed had varying …

The Confusing Problem Of Overlapping Internalizing And Externalizing Dimensions: What Should We Do?, Aubrey Faber Jan 2020

The Confusing Problem Of Overlapping Internalizing And Externalizing Dimensions: What Should We Do?, Aubrey Faber

Theses and Dissertations

The structure of psychopathology contributes to understanding the etiology and treatment of mental health disorders. Comorbidity is common, and the high correlation between dimensions may limit the research findings associated with a single dimension. The purpose of this study was to (1) evaluate different models of internalizing and externalizing in child psychopathology and (2) evaluate the relationships between other variables and dimensions of internalizing and externalizing across models that did and did not account for the correlation between dimensions. The first hypothesis was that a bifactor model, including a general psychopathology (P) factor and internalizing and externalizing factors, would provide …

The (Re)Building Of Social Capital For People Sleeping Rough: Concepts Of Home And Community In Byron Bay, Australia, Terra Huey Jan 2020

The (Re)Building Of Social Capital For People Sleeping Rough: Concepts Of Home And Community In Byron Bay, Australia, Terra Huey

Selected Full-Text Senior Thesis Projects

People experiencing homelessness and/or sleeping rough (sleeping in open air or in inadequate dwellings) are exposed to multiple layers of vulnerability including social isolation and lack of support from others. Without resources that help them transition out of constant survival mode, it can be difficult for people sleeping rough to maintain relationships and build social capital. Social capital broadly refers to the positive impact that community resources have on a subject or group. This case study adds to the existing literature on homelessness by providing a perspective focused on themes of community connection and social capital. To explore how community …

In an effort to understand the complexity of rural poverty, Invisible Poverty asks; How might Action Research interventions affect awareness, attitudes, and actions of the congregation concerning the issues of poverty?

Does Nepa Help Or Harm Esa Critical Habitat Designations? An Assessment Of Over 600 Critical Habitat Rules, John C. Ruple, Michael J. Tanana, Merrill M. Williams

Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources, and the Environment publications

This paper tests whether impact analysis pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act delays federal decision making, and whether the NEPA process results in significant changes to the substance of federal decisions. We reviewed 636 rules designating critical habitat for species that are protected by the Endangered Species Act. Because of a circuit court split, some of these rules were subject to NEPA analysis while others were not. In comparing these two groups we found that rules that underwent NEPA analysis were completed more than three months faster than rules that were exempted from NEPA review. We also found that …

What Can Future Social Worker Do Differently Than Recent Social Workers, Hannah Stavros-Mccauley

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World

When college students first go into the social work field, they must take Intro to Social Work which introduces the NASW Code of Ethics. The NASW Code of Ethics introduces six core values and these purposes explain what social workers are shooting for when working with clients. The six core values are services, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. When it comes to service the social workers, the main goal is to help their clients in need. The main goal that social workers focus on social justice is poverty, unemployment, discrimination, …

Examining Factors Associated With Failure To Fail In The Clinical Setting, Dee A. Adkins Jan 2020

Examining Factors Associated With Failure To Fail In The Clinical Setting, Dee A. Adkins

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Clinical nursing faculties struggle to assign failing grades to underperforming students in the clinical setting; this is known as failure to fail. Qualitative literature has revealed common factors for failure to fail; however, quantitative studies are required to determine the extent to which those factors affect the faculty’s decision-making process. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between face-implicating factors and the faculty’s likelihood of failing students in the clinical setting who do not meet the passing criteria. What is the relationship between face-implicating factors and the nursing faculty’s likelihood of passing students in the clinical setting …

Experiential Learning With Social Action Entrepreneurs Before And During Covid-19, Dale E. Hartz, Sheila M. Mcmahon, Merlyn Asencio, Rachel Badilla, Noemi Aguila-Marquez Jan 2020

Experiential Learning With Social Action Entrepreneurs Before And During Covid-19, Dale E. Hartz, Sheila M. Mcmahon, Merlyn Asencio, Rachel Badilla, Noemi Aguila-Marquez

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Across the country, the struggles of universities for market-place relevancy and financial stability has worsened due to the shocks of the COVID-19 crisis. While institutional leaders are evaluating a variety of business models to determine the best options for operating in the “new normal” that will be both financially viable and safe for the campus community, professors are busy adapting their teaching approaches for mixed method delivery. We, interdisciplinary professors and students, argue that new experiential learning opportunities lead to personal growth and development and may be the key to enhancing students’ job readiness. Furthermore, these opportunities may lead to …

Differences In Mental Health Outcomes Between Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Victims Of Emotional And Physical Intimate Partner Violence, Edward J. Gorski Jan 2020

Differences In Mental Health Outcomes Between Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Victims Of Emotional And Physical Intimate Partner Violence, Edward J. Gorski

ETD Archive

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been shown to be associated with numerous negative mental health outcomes, including depression (Spencer et al., 2019), anxiety disorders (Fonseca-Machado et al., 2015), and substance use disorders (Cafferky et al., 2018). However, while studies on IPV have become more prevalent in recent years, a significant deficit exists in psychological literature in the study of IPV within sexual minority populations. Sexual minority individuals of both genders are noted to experience IPV at rates similar to those typically seen in heterosexual female populations (Finneran & Stephenson, 2014). In addition, these individuals may experience significant minority stress, specifically …

Masculinity And Men’S Preferences For Therapist Gender, Dean Malec Jan 2020

Masculinity And Men’S Preferences For Therapist Gender, Dean Malec

ETD Archive

Attending to clients’ therapy preferences is a component of evidence-based practice in psychology. Regarding therapist characteristics, clients most often express preference for therapist gender. More specifically, men and women tend to express preference for a woman therapist for emotional concerns. Evidence-based models for attending to clients’ preferences recommend understanding the nature of their preferences. There is little empirical data, however, on what informs clients’ gender preferences, and most is from women participants. Thus, there is a particular need to better understand the nature of men’s preferences for therapist gender, especially as men under-utilize and drop out of therapy at greater …

A “Behind-The-Scenes” Look At Interprofessional Care Coordination: How Person-Centered Care In Safety-Net Health System Complex Care Clinics Produce Better Outcomes, E. Marshall Brooks, Jodi M. Winship, Anton J. Kuzel

Family Medicine and Population Health Publications

Introduction: While the effectiveness of team-based care and wrap-around services for high utilizers is clear, how complex care clinics deliver effective, person-centered care to these vulnerable populations is not well understood. This paper describes how interactions among interprofessional team members enabled individualized, rapid responses to the complex needs of vulnerable patients at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System’s Complex Care Clinic.

Methods: Researchers attended twenty weekly care coordination meetings, audio-recorded the proceedings, and wrote brief observational field notes. Researchers also qualitatively interviewed ten clinic team members. Emergent coding based on grounded theory and a consensus process were used to identify …

Victim Silencing, Sexual Violence Culture, Social Healing: Inherited Collective Trauma Of World War Ii South Korean Military “Comfort Women”, Mijin Cho

VCU Phi Kappa Phi Award Winners

The unresolved reconciliation process for WWII South Korean military “comfort women” presents a case of nationally inherited collective trauma, in which South Koreans far removed in time and space from the historical tragedy feel its implications and obligations for reparations and social healing. In examining the South Korean comfort women redress movement and systemic concealment of WWII military sexual slavery, this study investigates a pattern of victim silencing, characterized by institutional patriarchy and ineffective government involvement, from 1945 to 2019. Following the South Korean government’s formal rejection of the 2015 agreement with Japan regarding a final and irreversible conclusion to …
