Influence Of Teachers’ Psychological Safety, Principals’ Transformational Leadership, And Organizational Uncertainty On Schools As Learning Organizations, Lloyd D. Jackson Jun 2020

Influence Of Teachers’ Psychological Safety, Principals’ Transformational Leadership, And Organizational Uncertainty On Schools As Learning Organizations, Lloyd D. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of a school is learning. What this causal-comparative and correlational study sought to resolve is whether schools which are designed for learning can learn. The purpose of the study was four-fold. First, to validate the Dimensions of a Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) as an instrument to be used to within the school context. Secondly, to ascertain if there was a difference in how the factors of the DLOQ loaded in relation to the achievement level of a school. Thirdly, the study was to assess whether the dimensions of learning organization—continuous learning, dialogue and inquiry, collaboration, embedded systems, …

Between Soledad And Attica Brothers: The Raiford Protests And Prison Activism In Florida, Alexander Obermueller Jun 2020

Between Soledad And Attica Brothers: The Raiford Protests And Prison Activism In Florida, Alexander Obermueller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In February of 1971 prisoners staged a weeklong protest at Florida’s largest prison near the rural town of Raiford. Prior to the Raiford sit-in and hunger strike, George Jackson had only recently published his prison letters and six months after the Raiford uprising a similar protest would rock Attica Correctional Facility and bring prisoners’ rights into national news. This thesis situates Raiford prisoners’ protests in the context of an emerging prisoners’ rights movement. Prisoners made use of various protest forms, retracted their labor, and engaged in litigation to fundamentally challenge prison and achieve some improvements to their lives behind bars. …

The Role Of An Educational Intervention In Addressing Parent Spectator Behaviors In Louisiana Youth Sports, Jerry F. Reynolds Ii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Contemporary youth sports environments present significant psychosocial challenges to the family system. Among the greatest challenges to address are spectator behaviors of parents, which in the public eye has deteriorated and is out of control. Spectator behaviors and their impact upon the sports environment and family system is the topic of investigation in this study. Within the state of Louisiana, the advent of Act 355 extends the consequences of parent behavior and presents challenges to families, referees, and sports organizations. To better understand how legislation impacts parent perceptions of their spectator behaviors, the author examined spectator behaviors parents are observing, …

Mindfulness, Megan Paul Jun 2020

Mindfulness, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is described as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 22). Instead of being on autopilot and reacting in reflexive and mindless ways, perhaps with a focus on the past or the future, it is about being fully aware of and present in the moments of our lives. The nonjudgmental aspect is about not leaping to “likes and dislikes, opinions and prejudices, projections and expectations” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 23) and instead observing without evaluating. Mindfulness is considered both a trait and a state. Trait mindfulness refers …

The Role Of Social Work In Health Care For Veterans In The United States Of America (Praca Socjalna W Lecznictwie Weteranów Służby Wojskowej W Usa), Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk

Faculty Scholarship

Clinical social work in the American system of health care and its specific features in the Veterans Affairs (VA) of veterans are described in this paper. VA hospitals are the largest employers of social work worldwide. Because health care for veterans is paid for from government funds, VA hospitals are subject to regulations developed on the basis of research into the system’s effectiveness and efficiency. Clinical social workers cooperate with physicians and nurses to comprise an integral part of the health care team. Social workers fulfill the usual tasks related to social well‑being but also act as health educators and …

How Can Play-Based Teaching Strategies Increase Healthy Development Of Kindergarten Students?, Melissa Schooley Jun 2020

How Can Play-Based Teaching Strategies Increase Healthy Development Of Kindergarten Students?, Melissa Schooley

Graduate Teacher Education

Kindergarten’s original intention was to be a place where young children could learn and grow through a natural and playful setting. Kindergarten was designed to be a place where children could use various play materials to experiment with and learn about the world around them, all with minimal adult participation (Pyle, Prioletta, & Poliszczuk, 2018). However, with the greater demand on academic learning, assessments, and mandated benchmarks, play and exploration in the kindergarten classroom have diminished. Kindergartners are forced to learn through manners that are not developmentally appropriate, and it has been shown to have detrimental effects on children’s physical …

Examining The Narratives Of Military Sexual Trauma Survivors, Maria Carolina GonzáLez-Prats Jun 2020

Examining The Narratives Of Military Sexual Trauma Survivors, Maria Carolina GonzáLez-Prats

Dissertations and Theses

Background: The return of military sexual trauma (MST) to the national spotlight has been fueled by a combination of continued reports of sexual assaults across the various military branches, increased visibility of sexual abuse scandals in the media, and mounting calls for accountability from veteran advocacy groups and legislators. Although there have been numerous reforms implemented by the military, there still exists a significant gap between the military's official efforts and the reality of the survivors' experiences. Consequently, more research is needed to understand how survivors perceive the military's efforts, how these efforts affect their experiences, and how future …

Is There A Difference Between Democrat And Republican States In The Number Of Female Students Who Experienced Cyberbullying?, Wayne Davis Jun 2020

Is There A Difference Between Democrat And Republican States In The Number Of Female Students Who Experienced Cyberbullying?, Wayne Davis

Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In the United States, cyberbullying has become a major public health concern. Because there is a difference between the Democrat Party and the Republican Party on their philosophies involving laws and government interventions related to the control of electronic communications, it is important to know if there is a difference between political partisanship and cyberbullying. Data were collected in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017 using a three-stage cluster sample design, which produced a nationally representative sample of students in grades 9–12 who attended public and private schools. Initially, this study employed Poisson regression, which is a parametric statistic, in an …

A Clustered Randomized Trial Informing Patients On Dialysis About Their Ability To Donate Organs And Tissues, Ann M. Andrews, Nanhua Zhang, Allyce H. Smith, Caitlin Loughery, Ken Resnicow, Remonia Chapman, Holly Jenkins Riley, Sheri Stav, Jerry Yee

Nephrology Articles

INTRODUCTION: The transplant waiting list exceeds the number of organs available. One means of increasing the organ pool is to broaden potential donors to include those with chronic diseases.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS: The study tested the effectiveness of using peer mentors to encourage individuals on dialysis to enroll on an organ donor registry.

DESIGN: Dialysis units were pair-matched by size and racial composition and then randomized to one of 2 interventions: meetings with a peer mentor (experimental intervention) or organ donation mailings (control). Peer mentors were trained to discuss organ donation with individuals on dialysis during in-person meetings at dialysis units. …

Sexual Abuse Prevention For Adolescents With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Parent Perceptions And Program Effectiveness, Katie Lyn Barton Jun 2020

Sexual Abuse Prevention For Adolescents With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Parent Perceptions And Program Effectiveness, Katie Lyn Barton

Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) are at an increased risk of experiencing sexual abuse. While there are evidence-based prevention programs for typically developing children, research addressing the IDD population is lacking. Research is also lacking in parent's attitudes towards sexual abuse prevention in the IDD population. Study 1 used a mixed-methods design to measure parent's perceptions of a sexual abuse prevention program. A survey method was used to gather information from parents (n=79). Differences of a variety of variables were considered but only those focusing on the nature of disability, communication abilities, and severity of disability were significant. …

No-Show Rates And Associated Patient Factors In An Ophthalmology Resident Practice, Tavish Nanda, Aijin Wang, Luis M. Ducasse, Royce W.S. Chen, Jason Horowitz

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology

Abstract

Background In resident family medicine practices, a >20% no-show rate is common, often resulting in suboptimal care. Few studies have evaluated resident ophthalmology practices in a similar fashion. The objective of this study was to determine no-show rates and factors related to missed appointments in a resident-based ophthalmology clinic.

Methods We reviewed 19,237 de-identified appointments over one academic year. Appointments were divided into general clinic visits and subspecialty visits (these two clinics function separately at our institution). The number of days between an appointment being made for a patient and the scheduled visit was defined as “lead time.” Each …

White Supremacy Culture And Capitalism As Co-Dependent Systems Of Oppression, Allegra Kistler Ellis

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to discuss questions surrounding the intricacies and intertwining narratives of white supremacy culture and capitalism, and other systems of oppression that they fuel. For my research, I intentionally used anecdotes, essays, poems, books, and social media posts by primarily queer, trans, Black and Indigenous women and femmes. In doing so, I delve into the inherent relationship between whiteness, white exploitative institutions, and power. I discuss the history of the two systems of oppression in the United States through analyzing pillars and characteristics of white supremacy culture and capitalism, western colonized science and research, sexism, white feminism, fatphobia, …

The Birth Of The Bryn Mawr College Black Studies Program And The Herbert Aptheker Appointment, Emma Ruth Burns Jun 2020

The Birth Of The Bryn Mawr College Black Studies Program And The Herbert Aptheker Appointment, Emma Ruth Burns

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

In 1969, Bryn Mawr College hired the notorious Communist Herbert Aptheker to teach the inaugural course in what would become the Black Studies Program. Using primary sources, this essay examines the decision to hire Aptheker and what this decision can tell us about campus politics during the late-60’s/early-70’s. A sharp divide can be seen between conservative and leftist students, parents, alumnae, and even those unassociated with the College who felt it their civic or academic duty to object to or approve of the decision to hire Aptheker. As an institution of learning, Bryn Mawr’s decision of how to teach about …

The Consequences Of Exercise-Induced Weight Loss On Food Reinforcement. A Randomized Controlled Trial, Kyle D. Flack, Harry M. Hays, Jack Moreland Jun 2020

The Consequences Of Exercise-Induced Weight Loss On Food Reinforcement. A Randomized Controlled Trial, Kyle D. Flack, Harry M. Hays, Jack Moreland

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Obesity remains a primary threat to the health of most Americans, with over 66% considered overweight or obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or greater. A common treatment option many believe to be effective, and therefore turn to, is exercise. However, the amount of weight loss from exercise training is often disappointingly less than expected with greater amounts of exercise not always promoting greater weight loss. Increases in energy intake have been prescribed as the primary reason for this lack of weight loss success with exercise. Research has mostly focused on alterations in hormonal mediators …

Art Adherence Among Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With Hiv: Key Challenges And Opportunities, Dexter R. Voisin Jun 2020

Art Adherence Among Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With Hiv: Key Challenges And Opportunities, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

Purpose of Review: In the USA, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV. High levels of adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) can dramatically improve outcomes for persons living with HIV and reduce the risk of HIV transmission to others. Yet, there are numerous individual, social, and structural barriers to optimal ART adherence. Many of these factors disproportionately impact Black MSM and may contribute to their poorer rates of ART adherence. This review synthesizes the key challenges and intervention opportunities to improve ART adherence among MSM in the USA. Recent Findings: Key …

Employment Interviews, Megan Paul Jun 2020

Employment Interviews, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What are employment interviews?

Employment interviews are defined as “a personally interactive process of one or more people asking questions orally to another person and evaluating the answers for the purpose of determining the qualifications of that person in order to make employment decisions” (Levashina, Hartwell, Morgeson, & Campion, 2014, p. 243). Interviews are often loosely described as being either structured or unstructured, varying in the extent to which interviewers have freedom and flexibility in carrying out the interview (Huffcutt & Arthur, 1994). Within this broad dichotomy, there are many structural aspects on which interviews can differ (Campion, Palmer, & …

Medication Safety During Transitions Of Care:The Importance Of Checklists In Preventing Patient Harm, Laressa Bethishou, Olivia Lounsbury, Donna Prosser

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

There is a need to optimize patient safety as patients navigate through the healthcare system. With each transition of care, patients are vulnerable to changes that may cause adverse effects, including changes in their healthcare team, health status, and medications. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) defines a transition of care as “the movement of a patient from one setting of care to another.” While the concept itself may seem simple, this definition fails to capture the many potential handoff complications which classify these transitions as high risk for patients. With 67% of patients facing unintended medication discrepancies …
