The Long-Term Effects Of Japan’S Traumatic Experience In The Second World War And Its Implications For Peace In Northeast Asia, Eugen Koh, Tadashi Takeshima Nov 2020

The Long-Term Effects Of Japan’S Traumatic Experience In The Second World War And Its Implications For Peace In Northeast Asia, Eugen Koh, Tadashi Takeshima

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is an introductory report on the work of a Japanese study group whose primary aim is peacemaking, which it seeks by promoting a greater understanding of the long-term effects of their country’s traumatic experience of the Second World War. The group does not adopt a position of victimhood but seeks to understand the full picture of Japan’s role in the war, including its role as perpetrator. We came together with the shared assumption that the country’s inability to take responsibility for its role of the war is inextricably tied to its own traumatization. If this assumption is true, …

Ukraine As A Religious Destination, Olga Borysova, Tetiana Huzik, Liudmyla Fylypovych

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article is devoted to the state, development, and prospects of religious tourism and religious pilgrimage in Ukraine. Based on the interesting and eventful history of this country, and the presence of many sites of spiritual and religious evolution of peoples on its territory, the authors suggest that Ukraine may become a religious destination under certain conditions. The article briefly describes the history of pilgrimage from the ancient Rus' to the modern Ukraine. After 70 years of communist bans on religion and pilgrimage, religious life as well as religious tourism has been restored significantly in independent Ukraine. But this industry …

Architectural Features Of Protestant Churches From The 16th To The 21st Centuries In Ukraine, Valentyna Kuryliak, Petro Kotliarov, Mykhailo Fedorenko Nov 2020

Architectural Features Of Protestant Churches From The 16th To The 21st Centuries In Ukraine, Valentyna Kuryliak, Petro Kotliarov, Mykhailo Fedorenko

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article discusses the way the creeds of Protestants are reflected in their sacred architecture on Ukrainian lands. It investigates the evolution of the architecture of Protestant churches and religious buildings in Ukraine from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. Three periods in the formation and development of Protestantism in Ukraine are distinguished: the magisterial reformation, the classical currents of Protestantism (Calvinism, Lutheranism), and late Protestant currents (Baptism, Pentecostalism, Adventism). The article establishes that the church architecture of Protestant denominations in each of these periods was influenced by the particular teachings of the Protestants themselves, the dominant political ideology, and …

Chinese International Students’ Narratives Of Their Experiences In A Graduate Pathway Program: An Exploratory Study, Lu Norstrand Nov 2020

Chinese International Students’ Narratives Of Their Experiences In A Graduate Pathway Program: An Exploratory Study, Lu Norstrand

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Because of the tremendous growth of Chinese international students’ enrollment in American higher education and the rapid rise and development of Pathway programs in American universities, I determined the main purpose of this research was to determine the experiences of three Chinese international students in a Graduate Pathway program at a public four-year university in the Southeastern U.S. Three research questions were addressed:

  1. How do three Chinese international students describe their academic experiences in a Graduate Pathway program in the U.S.?
  2. How do these students describe differences in their learning experiences between the U.S. and China?
  3. How do these students …

A Report On Preparing The Council On East Asian Libraries’S (Ceal) Statement On Collection Development And Acquisition Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic: In Collaboration With The North American Coordinating Council On Japanese Library Resources (Ncc) And The Society Of Chinese Studies Librarians (Scsl), Fabiano Takashi Rocha Oct 2020

A Report On Preparing The Council On East Asian Libraries’S (Ceal) Statement On Collection Development And Acquisition Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic: In Collaboration With The North American Coordinating Council On Japanese Library Resources (Ncc) And The Society Of Chinese Studies Librarians (Scsl), Fabiano Takashi Rocha

Journal of East Asian Libraries

The COVID-19 pandemic forced libraries to close temporarily halting the access to physical collections. As a result, many libraries started reformulating or implementing collection development policies that favour the acquisition of electronic formats. Given the low, and in some cases nonexistent, availability of resources in electronic formats in the non-English publishing realm, concerns were raised by several area studies organizations about the equity and representation in collection development and acquisition. This report provides insight on how the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) , along with the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) and the Society of …

Lessons From Ithaka S+R On Research Practices In The Disciplines: What Have We Learned? What Should We Do?, Steven Weiland, Jennifer Dean

Charleston Library Conference

It is a byword of the study of academic research that disciplines mean differences. The series of studies underway at Ithaka S+R (with library partners) shows how scholars and scientists understand “Changing Research Practices.” The project’s goal is to guide libraries toward the most fruitful forms of support for research, enhancing the scholarly workflow according to disciplinary routines and innovations. Launched in 2012, nine reports have been published thus far, with others planned or anticipated. The disciplines range from history to public health, from chemistry to Asian Studies. The interview-based studies show how scholars manage their methods, and the opportunities …

Warfare In Christianity And Islam: Unveiling Secular Justifications And Motivations Behind So-Called Religious Violence, Onur Korkmaz Oct 2020

Warfare In Christianity And Islam: Unveiling Secular Justifications And Motivations Behind So-Called Religious Violence, Onur Korkmaz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenology of religion has received the most attention in social science because it has shaped society on social, political, and economic levels throughout history. Religion can be an organization that brings people together and develops a sense of identification, while also acting as a divisive structure for those of other faiths or nonbelievers. And so, we have witnessed the rise of both religious tendencies and violent acts for the last two decades, occasionally intertwined. Various belief systems have increasingly become a factor that politicians, intellectuals, and the mainstream media associate with violence-based modern warfare. However, scholars and analysts who …

Elizabeth Ann Seton’S Vision Of Ecological Community. Based On Elizabeth Bayley Seton: Collected Writings, Volume Two, Sung-Hae Kim S.C. Oct 2020

Elizabeth Ann Seton’S Vision Of Ecological Community. Based On Elizabeth Bayley Seton: Collected Writings, Volume Two, Sung-Hae Kim S.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article is a companion to “The Ecological Spirituality of Elizabeth Ann Seton,” which appeared in Vincentian Heritage 32:2 (2015). Using extensive quotations from Elizabeth’s letters, Sung-Hae Kim explores how she practiced ecological principles in her relationships with family, friends, and members of her religious community. Elizabeth’s relationships with her students, parents of students, other benefactors, and church leaders are also discussed. Ecological principles include mutual aid, self-governance, harmony, and balance. Elizabeth used these and others to form interconnected ecological communities. The concept of ecological community is defined, drawing from the work of the philosophers Peter Kropotkin, Henry David Thoreau, …

Spiritual Diversity, Spiritual Assessment, And Māori End-Of-Life Perspectives: Attaining Ka Ea,, Holly Nelson-Becker, Tess Moeke-Maxwell

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

The contemporary world is endowed with increasingly diverse spiritual and cultural perspectives, yet little is known about the spiritual concerns and spiritual resilience of Māori from Aotearoa New Zealand at the end of life. A context is provided for the value of spiritual assessment and identification of spiritual needs or concerns. Spiritual concerns and the desire to attain a state of ka ea (fulfillment, gratitude, or peace) may point to interventions, helping activities, or referrals that guide treatment. We reflect on qualitative findings from the 2017–2020 Pae Herenga study of 61 caregiving families, their helping professionals, and religious/spiritual leaders. We …

Clever Collaboration Highlights Israeli Experience; A Review Of The Ilanot Review, Fall 2019, The Collaborative Issue: Translations Of Granta Hebrew, Katharine Tibbitts

The Review Review

For two journals that have only been established in the last decade, Ilanot Review and Granta Hebrew pack a century’s worth of grief and wisdom into their awe-inspiring collaborative issue for Fall 2019. This collaboration, published under the title The Ilanot Review: The Collaborative Issue, represents a break from routine for both journals, as The Ilanot Review is known for its compelling thematic issues and Granta Hebrew for its Hebrew and Arabic extension of the illustrious London-based Granta—the Magazine of New Writing. The editors have compiled a brilliant whirlwind of poetry, prose, and memoir that pulls pieces from …
