Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Excerpt: "Under the enlightened leadership of its editor-in-chief, retired Grand Mufti of the Bosniak Muslim community, Dr. Mustafa Cerić, the journal Illuminatio splendidly succeeds to implement its espoused aims to be “a journal of new ideas that enlighten the human spirit and mind about the condition of the human past, present, and future.” The journal aims to be a “cultural broker” of universal values with new ideas. Its sources are the most progressive ideas of Islam in its European context, while aiming to explore and, if suitable, to utilize other religious and secular insights. To those who might hold the …

Predictors Of Student Success In An Upper Division Agriculture Chemistry Class, Maddison V. May

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

To attempt to find what made students successful within a higher division class at Missouri State University’s (MSU) Darr College of Agriculture, de-identified academic records of 172 students enrolled in AGR 300 - Food and Agriculture Chemistry were studied over four semesters. Deidentified data were collected and compared to final letter grade received at the end of the class using correlation coefficients, analysis of variance, and stepwise regression. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the influence of semester on letter grade. Correlation coefficients were used to determine and evaluate relationships between the variables and final grade. Stepwise regression was …

Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold Dec 2020

Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Despite the importance of historical and contemporary migration to the American Jewish community, popular awareness of the diversity and complexity of the American Jewish migration legacy is limited and largely focused upon Yiddish-speaking Jews who left the Pale of Settlement in Eastern Europe between 1880 and 1920 to settle in eastern and midwestern cities.

Wandering Jews provides readers with a broader understanding of the Jewish experience of migration in the United States and elsewhere. It describes the record of a wide variety of Jewish migrant groups, including those encountering different locations of settlement, historical periods, and facets of the migration …

Raising Consciousness: Challenging Diversity In Christian Publishing, Michael Omari Johnson Dec 2020

Raising Consciousness: Challenging Diversity In Christian Publishing, Michael Omari Johnson

Masters Theses

The Christian publishing industry has overlooked the importance of diversity, particularly its impact on black American audiences. While studies show that diversity and inclusion can lead to more innovation through problem-solving, there persists a paradox where a lack of opportunities, disparities in wealth and employment and systemic prejudices can play a role in the ethnic and racial homogeneity of the Christian publishing industry. Thus, there are many barriers preventing people of color from emerging to the market, reflecting in the storytelling, content creation and audience of African-descent followers.

Confluences Of Student Leadership And White Privilege: Exploring Consciousness-Of-Self With White Student Leaders, Jeremy N. Davis Dec 2020

Confluences Of Student Leadership And White Privilege: Exploring Consciousness-Of-Self With White Student Leaders, Jeremy N. Davis

Dissertations

There is a growing body of literature signaling the relevance of race in leadership development, but many conventional models do not prompt exploration of this social identity. The omission of race in leadership curriculum is disadvantageous for all college students, but among White student leaders, it may be a continuance of White privilege. The purpose of this constructivist study was to explore how White student leaders make meaning of their racial identity, and corresponding privilege, through a relevant leadership framework. Racial caucusing was employed as a method to prompt discussion and gather narratives from four White student leaders. Findings from …

Divine Command Theory And Psychopathy, Erik J. Wielenberg Dec 2020

Divine Command Theory And Psychopathy, Erik J. Wielenberg

Philosophy Faculty publications

I advance a novel challenge for Divine Command Theory based on the existence of psychopaths. The challenge, in a nutshell, is that Divine Command Theory has the implausible implication that psychopaths have no moral obligations and hence their evil acts, no matter how evil, are morally permissible. After explaining this argument, I respond to three objections to it and then critically examine the prospect that Divine Command Theorists might bite the bullet and accept that psychopaths can do no wrong. I conclude that the Psychopathy Objection constitutes a serious and novel challenge for Divine Command Theory.

Trinity Monotheism And Daniel Howard-Snyder's "Diminished Divinity Problem", Kevin Watson Jr. Nov 2020

Trinity Monotheism And Daniel Howard-Snyder's "Diminished Divinity Problem", Kevin Watson Jr.

The Corinthian

In this paper, I summarize and defend a model of the Trinity proposed by William Lane Craig and J.P. Moreland, which is called trinity monotheism. An important element of this model is that there are two ways to be divine; either one must be a proper part of the Trinity or the Trinity itself. I answer one objection in Daniel Howard-Snyder’s thorough critique of this model. He calls this objection the Diminished Divinity Problem and supposes that if the property of divinity is exemplified in two different ways, either by being a proper part of the Trinity or by being …

University Students’ Attitudes Toward The Physically Disabled In Palestine And Norway: A Multidimensional, Comparative And Quantitative Study, Erni Gustafsson, Nabil Alawi, Er Normann Andersen

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The aim of this study is to investigate students’ attitudes toward disabled people in Palestine as compared to the attitudes of their peers in Norway. The instrument used is the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale toward Persons with Disability (MAS); a self-report multidimensional inventory consisting of 34 items, that measures affects, cognition, and behavior toward the physically disabled people. A total of 100 students from Palestine participated in this study, in addition to a comparison group of 104 students from Norway. Despite the researchers’ impression that the Palestinian society is ridden with some prejudices concerning various forms of disability and that many …

Religion's Role In Immigration In A Multiculturalist Context, Jack Willerton Nov 2020

Religion's Role In Immigration In A Multiculturalist Context, Jack Willerton

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

Modern society is more diverse than ever before. This is especially the case in the United States and Europe, where there is a blend of different cultures, ethnicities and religions. One of the toughest issues facing both of these regions is immigration. Immigration, legal and illegal, had led to a host of responses from many different groups of people from different backgrounds. In particular, religiously affiliated groups have had differing responses to the issue of immigration, especially in the United States.

This project is an investigation on how these religious groups view the issue of immigration. On top of my …

Swords, War, And Goldsmithing: Benvenuto Cellini And Masculinity In Sixteenth-Century Italy, Jessica Hogbin Nov 2020

Swords, War, And Goldsmithing: Benvenuto Cellini And Masculinity In Sixteenth-Century Italy, Jessica Hogbin

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Born in 1500, Benvenuto Cellini was one of the world’s most renowned Renaissance artists. As a goldsmith and a sculptor, his works became well-known masterpieces. In his autobiography, The Life of Benvenuto the Son of Giovanni Cellini Written by Himself in Florence, Cellini detailed his experiences and actions as an artist, fighter, and man living in the sixteenth century. While Cellini states his purpose for writing the autobiography is to describe his achievements in art, there is a great deal of violence in The Life, much of which Benvenuto instigates. As shown by The Life, in 16th century Italy, aggression—if …

The Robert Lepper Mural Painting: A Hidden Gem In White Hall At West Virginia University, Katelyn S. Caplinger Nov 2020

The Robert Lepper Mural Painting: A Hidden Gem In White Hall At West Virginia University, Katelyn S. Caplinger

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

White Hall, on West Virginia University’s downtown campus in Morgantown, hides a gem little known to the general population: in one of the classrooms resides a large mural created by painter Robert Lepper. Completed in 1942 and intended to represent the unity of art and science at West Virginia University, this mural is an impressive albeit easily-overlooked piece of West Virginia University history. In this study, we conducted an in-depth examination of the Lepper mural using several visual and analytical techniques, which together reveal interesting technical and artistic aspects of the work. In addition to furthering our knowledge about this …
