The Physical Activity Wearables In The Police Force (Paw-Force) Study: Acceptability And Impact, Sa Buckingham, K Morrissey, Aj Williams, L Price, J Harrison

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Abstract Background Policing is a highly stressful and increasingly sedentary occupation. The study aim was to assess the acceptability and impact of a mobile health (mHealth) technology intervention (Fitbit® activity monitor and ‘Bupa Boost’ smartphone app) to promote physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary time in the police force. Methods Single-group, pre-post, mixed methods pilot study. Police officers and staff (n = 180) were recruited from two police forces in South West England. Participants used the technology for 12 weeks (an ‘individual’ then ‘social’ phase) followed by 5 months of optional use. Data sources included Fitbit®-recorded objective step count, questionnaire …

Recent studies have proposed that social norms play a key role in motivating human cooperation and in explaining the unique scale and cultural diversity of our prosociality. However, there have been few studies that directly link social norms to the form, development and variation in prosocial behaviour across societies. In a cross-cultural study of eight diverse societies, we provide evidence that (1) the prosocial behaviour of adults is predicted by what other members of their society judge to be the correct social norm, (2) the responsiveness of children to novel social norms develops similarly across societies and (3) societally variable …

Following a single blind, cross-over and non-randomized design we investigated the effect of 7-day use of chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash on the salivary microbiome as well as several saliva and plasma biomarkers in 36 healthy individuals. They rinsed their mouth (for 1 min) twice a day for seven days with a placebo mouthwash and then repeated this protocol with CHX mouthwash for a further seven days. Saliva and blood samples were taken at the end of each treatment to analyse the abundance and diversity of oral bacteria, and pH, lactate, glucose, nitrate and nitrite concentrations. CHX significantly increased the abundance of …

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a lymphocyte subset with intrinsic immunosuppressive properties that can be expanded in large numbers ex vivo and have been shown to prevent allograft rejection and promote tolerance in animal models. To investigate the safety, applicability, and biological activity of autologous Treg adoptive transfer in humans, we conducted an open-label, dose-escalation, Phase I clinical trial in liver transplantation. Patients were enrolled while awaiting liver transplantation or 6-12 months posttransplant. Circulating Tregs were isolated from blood or leukapheresis, expanded under good manufacturing practices (GMP) conditions, and administered intravenously at either 0.5-1 million Tregs/kg or 3-4.5 million Tregs/kg. …

Use Of Preoperative Cone-Beam Computed Tomography To Aid In Establishment Of Endodontic Working Length: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, A Paterson, V Franco, S Patel, F Foschi Jan 2020

Use Of Preoperative Cone-Beam Computed Tomography To Aid In Establishment Of Endodontic Working Length: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, A Paterson, V Franco, S Patel, F Foschi

Peninsula Dental School

Purpose This study was performed to assess the accuracy of preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), when justified for other reasons, in locating the apical foramen and establishing the working length. Materials and Methods Six electronic databases were searched for studies on this subject. All studies, of any type, were included if they compared measurements of working length with preoperative CBCT to measurements using an electronic apex locator (EAL) or histological reference standard. Due to the high levels of heterogeneity, an inverse-variance random-effects model was chosen, and weighted mean differences were obtained with 95% confidence intervals and P values. Results Nine …

Schneiderian Membrane Thickness Variation Following Endodontic Procedures: A Retrospective Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study, Den Munckhof T Van, S Patel, G Koller, E Berkhout, F Mannocci, F Foschi

Peninsula Dental School

Background To assess the change of the Schneider membrane thickness measured by CBCT before and after root canal treatment, retreatment and pulp capping procedures. Methods This retrospective study was conducted on CBCT scans of a patient population of Guy’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London. Three groups of patients were studied: Group 1 consisted of patients referred for primary endodontic treatment; Group 2 for endodontic retreatment; Group 3 for indirect pulp capping procedures (serving as a control group). Follow up scans were carried out 1 year after treatment. Measurements were carried out on CBCT scans and data were analysed statistically by …

Current Uses Of Chlorhexidine For Management Of Oral Disease: A Narrative Review, Zoë L.S. Brookes, Raul Bescos, Louise A. Belfield, Kamran Ali, Anthony Roberts

Peninsula Dental School

ObjectivesChlorhexidine (CHX) is a commonly used antiseptic mouthwash, used by dental practitioners and the public, due to its antimicrobial effects. The aim of this article was to provide a narrative review of current antimicrobial uses of CHX relevant to dentistry in the context of oral diseases, highlighting need for further studies to support its safe and appropriate use.Study selection, data and sourcesRandomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and national (UK and US) guidelines were consulted where available, with search terms for each subject category entered into MEDLINE, PubMed, Google Scholar and the Cochrane database.ResultsSome evidence existed to support adjunctive short-term use …

Beyond The Crossroads Of Magic, Health, And Well-Being, Steven Bagienski, Gustav Kuhn

School of Psychology

Magicians and scientists have begun collaborating to gain insight into various psychological functions. However, one underexplored area is the use of magic tricks to enhance health and well-being. Several magic programmes currently use magic tricks to enhance cognitive, emotional, social, and physical well-being. The applications of these magic programmes range from physical and psychological therapies to gang prevention, hospitals and classrooms. A few programmes have been empirically investigated and there is now a growing number of empirical studies that explore the well- being value of magic. Therefore, we conducted an up-to-date summaryreview of magic, health, and well-being. These studies are …

A Novel Lung Health Programme Addressing Awareness And Behaviour-Change Aiming To Prevent Chronic Respiratory Diseases In Rural Uganda: A Two-Year Train-The-Trainer Programme, R Jones, B Kirenga, S Buteme, S Williams, Gemert F Van

Peninsula Medical School

Chronic lung disease is a huge, growing, but under reported problem in Africa. Following a survey in rural Uganda, which found 16% of the adult population had COPD, we developed a lung health programme aiming to raise awareness in the community of the risk factors for developing chronic lung disease and how to reduce the risks. A two-year train-the-trainer programme was conducted by healthcare workers (HCWs) in Masindi District, Uganda. Strategy and preliminary education materials were co-developed in a series of meetings with stakeholders including clinicians and community members. An initial group of HCWs were trained and further refned the …
