A Personalized Approach To Professional Development Through A Community Of Practice, Kelly I. Cua Jan 2020

A Personalized Approach To Professional Development Through A Community Of Practice, Kelly I. Cua

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

Personalized learning has gained traction in the United States as schools look to improve student learning through means that are less focused on standardized tests and are more focused on individualized student needs (Cavanagh, 2014). To successfully implement a new learning initiative such as personalized learning, high-caliber training must be provided. Research indicates a teacher's expertise and effectiveness account for the most significant difference in student achievement (Ferguson, 2001; Hattie, 2012), and therefore quality teacher professional development is paramount. One way to improve a teacher’s excellence and effectiveness is through sustained, collaborative, and meaningful professional development.

Introduction: Humans are intentionally exposed to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) where they are used in variety of biomedical applications as imaging and drug delivery agents as well as diagnostic and therapeutic agents currently in clinic and in a variety of upcoming clinical trials. Consequently, it is critical that we gain a better understanding of how physiochemical properties such as size, shape, and surface chemistry drive cellular uptake and AuNP toxicity in vivo. Understanding and being able to manipulate these physiochemical properties will allow for the production of safer and more efficacious use of AuNPs in biomedical applications.

A Simple Predictive Model For Estimating Relative E-Cigarette Toxic Carbonyl Levels, Shawna Vreeke, Xijing Zhu, Robert Strongin Jan 2020

A Simple Predictive Model For Estimating Relative E-Cigarette Toxic Carbonyl Levels, Shawna Vreeke, Xijing Zhu, Robert Strongin

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

E-cigarette devices are wide ranging, leading to significant differences in levels of toxic carbonyls in their respective aerosols. Power can be a useful method in predicting relative toxin concentrations within the same device, but does not correlate well to inter-device levels. Herein, we have developed a simple mathematical model utilizing parameters of an e-cigarette’s coil and wick in order to predict relative levels of e-liquid solvent degradation. Model 1, which is coil length/(wick surface area*wraps), performed in the moderate-to-substantial range as a predictive tool (R2 = 0.69). Twelve devices, spanning a range of coil and wick styles, were analyzed. Model …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The high number of vehicle–pedestrian crashes in the United State has gained increased attention among transportation safety analysts in recent years. Being directly exposed to the collision force makes pedestrians more prone to becoming severely injured when in crash than other road users. Considering the fact that pedestrian-involved crashes is a serious public health problem, the current study’s aim is to investigate the contributing factors associated with injury severity of pedestrian crashes by time-of-week. Separate injury severity models for weekday and weekend crashes were developed, and the overall stability of the model estimates was examined through likelihood ratio tests. For …

Performance Evaluation Of A Carbon Nanotube Sensor For Fatigue Crack Monitoring Of Metal Structures, Shafique Ahmed, Thomas Schumacher, Erik T. Thostenson, Jennifer Mcconnell

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes research that investigated the ability of a carbon nanotube (CNT) sensor to detect and monitor fatigue crack initiation and propagation in metal structures. The sensor consists of a nonwoven carrier fabric with a thin film of CNT that is bonded to the surface of a structure using an epoxy adhesive. The carrier fabric enables the sensor to be easily applied over large areas with complex geometries. Furthermore, the distributed nature of the sensor improves the probability of detecting crack initiation and enables monitoring of crack propagation over time. Piezoresistivity of the sensor enables strains to be monitored …

Accessibility And Equity Analysis Of Common Carrier Parcel Lockers At Transit Facilities In Portland, Oregon, Katherine Keeling, Jaclyn S. Schaefer, Miguel Figliozzi Jan 2020

Accessibility And Equity Analysis Of Common Carrier Parcel Lockers At Transit Facilities In Portland, Oregon, Katherine Keeling, Jaclyn S. Schaefer, Miguel Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transit goals have typically focused on commuter trips but facilitating urban last-mile freight logistics is a potential strategy to increase transit ridership and mitigate the demands of parcel distribution on the transportation network. Presently, most parcel lockers operate out of private businesses, but consumer surveys have found that transit users may be interested in locker facilities at transit connections. The implementation of an unmanned, secure, common carrier parcel locker system could have benefits for non-transit users as well. Consolidation of deliveries is expected to benefit courier companies by allowing operations at increasingly competitive rates, and retailers and consumers benefit from …

Youth Decline In Church Growth And Attendance, Marion Diane Jones Jan 2020

Youth Decline In Church Growth And Attendance, Marion Diane Jones

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Youth attendance in the church has declined in the recent past. The reason for their decline is that they no longer find a church to be socially and spiritually relevant to their lives. The paper seeks to provide a solution to the problem through spiritual formation and increasing the depth of youth programs so that they can remain socially relevant to the lives of the young people. This will be done by encouraging youth people to know who Jesus is and how to have a personal relationship with him through faith.

The Economic Basis Of The Independent Contractor/Employee Distinction, Eric Posner Jan 2020

The Economic Basis Of The Independent Contractor/Employee Distinction, Eric Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In recent years, a controversy has erupted over the distinction between employees and independent contractors. Commentators have argued that in the modern “gig economy,” many people traditionally classified as independent contractors are as vulnerable as employees and should be granted the legal protections that employees alone normally enjoy. However, the distinction between the two categories remains inescapable, and the theoretical basis for it has not been identified. I argue that the distinction is derived from market structure. Employees are workers who, because they must make relationship-specific investments in a single firm, are subject to labor monopsony. Independent contractors do not …

Chevronizing Around Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jonathan S. Masur, Eric A. Posner Jan 2020

Chevronizing Around Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jonathan S. Masur, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The Trump administration’s efforts to weaken regulations are in tension with cost-benefit analysis, which in many cases supports those regulations or otherwise fails to support the administration’s deregulatory objectives. Rather than attempting to justify its actions as a matter of policy preferences, the administration has responded on multiple occasions by using Chevron to interpret statutes so as to evade cost-benefit analysis. The statutory interpretation route, which we call “Chevronizing” around cost-benefit analysis, creates novel challenges for courts, as it pits traditional Chevron deference against a trend in favor of requiring agencies to regulate based on cost-benefit analysis as a matter …

Policy Implications Of The Common Ownership Debate, Eric A. Posner Jan 2020

Policy Implications Of The Common Ownership Debate, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The debate over common ownership initiated by Azar, Schmalz, and Tecu’s paper on airlines has raised questions about what, if any, policy responses are appropriate when common owners reduce competition in product markets. This paper, a response to a symposium for Antitrust Bulletin, reviews the literature on policy responses and evaluates various reform proposals in light of recent empirical and theoretical developments.

Poverty Eradication: The Role Of Nigerian Libraries Towards The Achievement Of The Sustainable Development Goals (Sdgs), Happiness Chijioke Michael-Onuoha, Christopher Nkiko, Phd, Omorodion Okuonghae Cln

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Poverty has been identified as the major source of widening global inequalities and under-development at individual, organizational and national levels. The UN Sustainable Development Goals placed a great deal of priority in the eradication of all forms of poverty by the year 2030. The paper examined the roles of Nigerian libraries towards the achievement of this laudable goal. It canvasses the idea that poverty eradication is possible through the availability, accessibility and utilization of appropriate information resulting in requisite capacity building and empowerment of the Nigerian citizens. The paper identified specific interventions to be used by libraries in poverty alleviation …
