Designing A Multifaceted Telehealth Intervention For A Rural Population Using A Model For Developing Complex Interventions In Nursing, Stephen M. Davis, Amanda Jones, Margaret E. Jaynes, Kori N. Woodrum, Marcus Canaday, Lindsay Allen, Jennifer A. Mallow

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Telehealth interventions offer an evidenced-based approach to providing cost-effective care, education, and timely communication at a distance. Yet, despite its widespread use, telehealth has not reached full potential, especially in rural areas, due to the complex process of designing and implementing telehealth programs. The objective of this paper is to explore the use of a theory-based approach, the Model for Developing Complex Interventions in Nursing, to design a pilot telehealth intervention program for a rural population with multiple chronic conditions.

Methods

In order to develop a robust, evidenced based intervention that suits the needs of the community, stakeholders, and …

Household Water Security: An Analysis Of Water Affect In The Context Of Hydraulic Fracturing In West Virginia, Appalachia, Bethani Turley, Martina Angela Caretta Jan 2020

Household Water Security: An Analysis Of Water Affect In The Context Of Hydraulic Fracturing In West Virginia, Appalachia, Bethani Turley, Martina Angela Caretta

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Hydraulic fracturing has been booming in the last decade in the United States. While natural gas extraction and production has improved the national energy security, it has raised questions around the water security of those communities where extraction is taking place. Both scientists and residents are concerned about hydraulic fracturing’s impacts on surface- and groundwater, especially regarding how hydraulic fracturing impacts residents’ access to safe household well water. In the past decade, the Marcellus Shale has been developed in Northwestern West Virginia, yet the human geography dimensions of oil and gas extraction in West Virginia remain to be investigated. This …

Larger-Scale Ocean-Atmospheric Patterns Drive Synergistic Variability And World-Wide Volatility Of Wheat Yields, Ehsan Najafi, Indrani Pal, Reza Khanbilvardi Jan 2020

Larger-Scale Ocean-Atmospheric Patterns Drive Synergistic Variability And World-Wide Volatility Of Wheat Yields, Ehsan Najafi, Indrani Pal, Reza Khanbilvardi

Advanced Science Research Center

Diagnosing potential predictability of global crop yields in the near term is of utmost importance for ensuring food supply and preventing socio-economic consequences. Previous studies suggest that a substantial proportion of global wheat yield variability depends on local climate and larger-scale ocean-atmospheric patterns. The science is however at its infancy to address whether synergistic variability and volatility (major departure from the normal) of multi-national crop yields can be potentially predicted by larger-scale climate drivers. Here, using observed data on wheat yields for 85 producing countries and climate variability from 1961–2013, we diagnose that wheat yields vary synergistically across key producing …

The Orthodox Church And Religion In Revolutionary Russia, 1894-1924, Vera Shevzov Jan 2020

The Orthodox Church And Religion In Revolutionary Russia, 1894-1924, Vera Shevzov

Religion: Faculty Publications

This chapter examines the fate of the Russian Orthodox Church—as an institution and community—during Russia’s years of revolution, from the reign of Nicholas II through the 1917 February Revolution and subsequent Bolshevik coup. It argues that Orthodoxy’s legal status as a ‘primary and predominant’ faith, and the state ascription of the ‘Russian people’ to Orthodoxy from birth under imperial rule, were in large part responsible for Orthodoxy’s institutional turmoil during these years. Further, the chapter challenges the use of the term ‘secularization’ with respect to the Bolshevik regime’s anti-religious policies. In the span of weeks, the Bolshevik regime not only …

A Review Of Minority Stress As A Risk Factor For Cognitive Decline In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Elders, Anthony N. Correro, Kristy A. Nielson Jan 2020

A Review Of Minority Stress As A Risk Factor For Cognitive Decline In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Elders, Anthony N. Correro, Kristy A. Nielson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults comprise a unique and growing subset of the aging population. The historical context in which they came of age was imbued with victimization and discrimination. These experiences are subjectively stressful and collectively known as minority stress. Older LGBT adults continue to face stressors related to their gender and sexual identities in their daily lives. Importantly, chronic minority stress (CMS), like other forms of chronic stress, is harmful to health and well-being. CMS contributes to LGBT health disparities, including cardiovascular disease and depression, conditions that in turn increase risk for premature cognitive decline. …

Do Instructions Intended To Reduce False Positives Improve The Measurement Of Physical Partner Violence Victimization Among Adolescents And Young Adults?, Kelli Sargent, Kristen Yule, Kate Bridges, Ernest N. Jouriles, John H. Grych Jan 2020

Do Instructions Intended To Reduce False Positives Improve The Measurement Of Physical Partner Violence Victimization Among Adolescents And Young Adults?, Kelli Sargent, Kristen Yule, Kate Bridges, Ernest N. Jouriles, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: We examine how instructions to exclude behaviors occurring in playful or joking contexts influence the measurement of physical partner violence victimization. Specifically, we demonstrate how such instructions influence the prevalence and validity of self-reported victimization. Method: Study 1 used a Think Aloud procedure to evaluate thoughts of college students (n = 451) reporting victimization experiences that occurred during high school. Participants were randomized to report on physical partner violence victimization with or without instructions to exclude playful acts. Study 2 experimentally evaluated whether the instructions affect the criterion validity of victimization scores with measures of depressive symptoms and emotion …

Catastrophe Models For Cognitive Workload And Fatigue: Project Log 2012-2020, Stephen J. Guastello Jan 2020

Catastrophe Models For Cognitive Workload And Fatigue: Project Log 2012-2020, Stephen J. Guastello

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Many real-world tasks require people to forecast chaotic events in order to take adaptive action. This ability is considered rare, and less understood than other cognitive processes. The present study examined how the performance dynamics in a chaotic forecasting task would be affected by stressors such as cognitive workload and fatigue using two cusp catastrophe models. Participants were 147 undergraduates who were shown graphs and brief chaotic number series for which they needed to forecast the next four values. Performance data were complemented by variables known to represent cognitive elasticity versus rigidity, compensatory abilities for fatigue, and NASA TLX ratings …

The Chivalrous Bystander: The Role Of Gender-Based Beliefs And Empathy On Bystander Behavior And Perceived Barriers To Intervention, Kristen Yule, Jill C. Hoxmeier, Kevin Petranu, John H. Grych Jan 2020

The Chivalrous Bystander: The Role Of Gender-Based Beliefs And Empathy On Bystander Behavior And Perceived Barriers To Intervention, Kristen Yule, Jill C. Hoxmeier, Kevin Petranu, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Despite substantial evidence demonstrating a relation between gender-based beliefs and violence against women, there has been little research examining whether sexist attitudes are related to prosocial bystander behavior. Understanding psychosocial influences on bystanders’ behavior could inform bystander training programs on college campuses, and so the current study examined the unique and joint effects of three gender-based attitudes (rape myth acceptance, hostile sexism, and benevolent sexism) and empathy in predicting bystander behavior and perceived barriers to intervention in situations that undergraduates (N = 500; 70% female; Mage = 18.86 years) had experienced in the prior year. Benevolent sexism was …

Adaptive Functioning In High-Risk Preschoolers: Caregiver Practices Beyond Parental Warmth, Kristen Yule, Christina Murphy, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Objectives: Prior research on caregiving behaviors associated with resilience in children exposed to adversity has focused primarily on broad constructs, such as parental warmth and supportiveness, as protective factors. In an effort to provide more precise analysis of caregiver behaviors related to adaptive functioning in high-risk preschoolers, the present study used a multi-method design to examine the unique and joint relations of specific emotion socialization behaviors and parental warmth with adaptive functioning in preschool-aged children.

Methods: Participants were 124 children aged 3–6 years from Head Start programs and their primary caregiver. Caregivers and teachers reported on preschoolers' functioning across multiple …

The Protective Roles Of Latinx Intercultural Competence And Acculturation On Acculturative Stress And Depression: A Brief Longitudinal Study, Mark W. Driscoll, Lucas Torres Jan 2020

The Protective Roles Of Latinx Intercultural Competence And Acculturation On Acculturative Stress And Depression: A Brief Longitudinal Study, Mark W. Driscoll, Lucas Torres

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the ability of cognitive schemas of culturally based skills, or Latinx intercultural competence (LIC), and acculturation to influence later acculturative stress and depression symptom severity. Latinx adults (final n 98), recruited from national e-mail listings and organizations with a predominant Latinx cultural base, completed online self-report measures of Latinx and Anglo acculturation, acculturative stress, LIC, and depression symptom severity at baseline (T1) and 6-month follow-up (T2). Path analysis indicated that T1 LIC was significantly related to greater T1 Latinx and T1 Anglo acculturation, and that T1 LIC was significantly, indirectly related to lower T2 acculturative stress through …

Ethnic Discrimination, Sexism, And Depression Among Latinx Women: The Roles Of Anxiety Sensitivity And Expressive Suppression, Felicia Mata-Greve, Lucas Torres Jan 2020

Ethnic Discrimination, Sexism, And Depression Among Latinx Women: The Roles Of Anxiety Sensitivity And Expressive Suppression, Felicia Mata-Greve, Lucas Torres

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Latinx women are twice as likely to experience depression compared to Latinx men. Latinx women are also subjected to heightened stress in the form of ethnic and sexist discrimination. Limited research has sought to explore variables that may have explanatory roles between discrimination and mental health outcomes among women of color. The current study tested whether anxiety sensitivity and expressive suppression uniquely link discrimination and depression for Latinx women. This cross-sectional study included 246 Latinx women primarily of Mexican descent (n = 173) recruited from community events and Mechanical Turk. On average, participants were 36.29 years old (SD …

Depression And Perceived Stress As Mediators Between Racial Microaggressions And Somatic Symptoms In College Students Of Color, Susan Torres-Harding, Lucas Torres, Elaine Yeo Jan 2020

Depression And Perceived Stress As Mediators Between Racial Microaggressions And Somatic Symptoms In College Students Of Color, Susan Torres-Harding, Lucas Torres, Elaine Yeo

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The current study examined the ability of mental health indicators, namely depression and perceived stress, to mediate the relationship between racial microaggressions and health among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of 467 college students of color. Consistent with what was hypothesized, the main findings revealed that depression and perceived stress mediated the relationships between types of racial microaggressions, specifically low-achieving, invisibility, and criminality, and somatic symptoms. The study results suggest that there may be multiple pathways by which specific racial microaggressions might be associated with psychological and somatic health indicators.

Panpsychism As An Observational Science, Gregory Matloff Jan 2020

Panpsychism As An Observational Science, Gregory Matloff

Publications and Research

The metaphysical concept of panpsychism defines a field of proto-consciousness that is present at all levels in the universe. An observational indication that this concept might be correct is self-organization on all levels from the molecular to the galactic. In 2011, an investigation into the validity of author Olaf Stapledon’s concept that a portion of stellar motion is volitional led to a consideration of an observational stellar kinematics anomaly dubbed Parenago’s Discontinuity. Data available at the time indicated that cooler, less massive stars (such as the Sun) revolve a bit faster around the center of the Milky Way galaxy than …

Advanced Science Research Center

The Earth's population will become more than 80% urban during this century. This threshold is often regarded as sufficient justification for pursuing urban ecology. However, pursuit has primarily focused on building empirical richness, and urban ecology theory is rarely discussed. The Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) has been grounded in theory since its inception and its two decades of data collection have stimulated progress toward comprehensive urban theory. Emerging urban ecology theory integrates biology, physical sciences, social sciences, and urban design, probes interdisciplinary frontiers while being founded on textbook disciplinary theories, and accommodates surprising empirical results. Theoretical growth in urban ecology …

Community Social Determinants And Health Outcomes Drive Availability Of Patient-Centered Medical Homes, Nathaniel Bell, Rebecca Wilkerson, Kathy Mayfield-Smith, Ana Lopez-De Fede

Publications

The collaborative design of America’s patient-centered medical homes places these practices at the forefront of emerging efforts to address longstanding inequities in the quality of primary care experienced among socially and economically marginalized populations. We assessed the geographic distribution of the country’s medical homes and assessed whether they are appearing within communities that face greater burdens of disease and social vulnerability. We assessed overlapping spatial clusters of mental and physical health surveys; health behaviors, including alcohol-impaired driving deaths and drug overdose deaths; as well as premature mortality with clusters of medical home saturation and community socioeconomic characteristics. Overlapping spatial clusters …
