Is There A Relationship Between The Number Of Female Students Who Were Cyberbullied And The Number Of Female Students Who Seriously Considered Attempting Suicide?, Wayne L. Davis

Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In the United States, cyberbullying has become a major public health concern. Indeed, many people who are victims of cyberbullying consider harming themselves. Because criminal justice practitioners are concerned with public safety, this is an area worthy of study. The general purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a correlation between the percentage of female students who were electronically bullied and the percentage of female students who seriously considered suicide. Data were collected in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017 using a three-stage cluster sample design, which produced a nationally representative sample of students in grades 9–12 who …

Challenges And Opportunities For Sharing Threat Information With Radioactive Materials Operators, Raphael Duguay Jul 2020

Challenges And Opportunities For Sharing Threat Information With Radioactive Materials Operators, Raphael Duguay

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Operators are required to implement security measures to address requirements set by the regulatory body or competent authority. These security requirements are generally based on the national threat level and information provided by the relevant law enforcement authority, intelligence agencies and other relevant stakeholders. However, not all States can share this information with radioactive materials holders (e.g., operators), especially if they take a more prescriptive approach to regulation on security. The same situation often exists when a performance-based approach is used because there are multiple barriers that restrict the competent authority from sharing threat information. For example, competent authorities need …

Defining A Research Agenda For Layperson Prehospital Hemorrhage Control: A Consensus Statement, Eric Goralnick, Erin Andrade, Et Al

Open Access Publications

Importance: Trauma is the leading cause of death for US individuals younger than 45 years, and uncontrolled hemorrhage is a major cause of trauma mortality. The US military's medical advancements in the field of prehospital hemorrhage control have reduced battlefield mortality by 44%. However, despite support from many national health care organizations, no integrated approach to research has been made regarding implementation, epidemiology, education, and logistics of prehospital hemorrhage control by layperson immediate responders in the civilian sector.

Objective: To create a national research agenda to help guide future work for prehospital hemorrhage control by laypersons.

The Role Of Professional Nursing In The Origin Of The Newborns' And Mothers' Health Protection Act Of 1996 From A Feminist Perspective, 1981-1996, Jan-Louise Leonard Jul 2020

The Role Of Professional Nursing In The Origin Of The Newborns' And Mothers' Health Protection Act Of 1996 From A Feminist Perspective, 1981-1996, Jan-Louise Leonard

Dissertations

This social historiography tells the story of the origin of the Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act of 1996. In the 1980s when the federal government reduced allocations to states' Medicaid programs as a cost saving measure, hospitals, initiated early discharge of patients to save costs. Given four million births annually, childbirth is the most frequent reason for hospitalization in the United States. Hospitals discharged Medicaid insured mothers and newborns very early at twenty-four hours for a normal birth and seventy-two hours for a cesarean. Other insurers adopted similar managed care strategies in the early 1990s. By 1995, unionized nurses …

Patterns Of Population Displacement During Mega-Fires In California Detected Using Facebook Disaster Maps, Shenyue Jia, Seung Hee Kim, Son V. Nghiem, Paul Doherty, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The Facebook Disaster Maps (FBDM) work presented here is the first time this platform has been used to provide analysis-ready population change products derived from crowdsourced data targeting disaster relief practices. We evaluate the representativeness of FBDM data using the Mann-Kendall test and emerging hot and cold spots in an anomaly analysis to reveal the trend, magnitude, and agglommeration of population displacement during the Mendocino Complex and Woolsey fires in California, USA. Our results show that the distribution of FBDM pre-crisis users fits well with the total population from different sources. Due to usage habits, the elder population is underrepresented …

Leveraging The Ilo For Human Rights And Workers’ Rights In International Sporting Events, Dantam Le Jul 2020

Leveraging The Ilo For Human Rights And Workers’ Rights In International Sporting Events, Dantam Le

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Sports majorly impact the world, and millions of fans from all over the globe rally together with pride to watch their countries compete on the world’s stage in international sporting events such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup. Studies suggest that mega sporting events help host cities gain an influx of resources from the central government relative to non-host cities in the same country, and that this may be particularly important in periods of economic recession and resource scarcity. Sports play a central role in quality education for all, and sports have been found to advance public health, …

The Sociology Of Shaming, Rodger A. Bates, Bryan Labrecque Jul 2020

The Sociology Of Shaming, Rodger A. Bates, Bryan Labrecque

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Shaming is a form of social control found in every society. It is an informal mechanism that is found in traditional societies or small, personal groups. The power of shaming is related to a person's sense of self as reflected by his or her interpretation of the acts of others. Today, in the emerging environment of the global village, shaming has evolved from an expanded from a personal to a collective mechanism of influence and social control. In fact, what was once a mechanism of social control has become a potential for social change.

A Framework For The Efficient And Ethical Use Of Artificial Intelligence In The Criminal Justice System, Dan Hunter, Mirko Bagaric, Nigel Stobbs Jul 2020

A Framework For The Efficient And Ethical Use Of Artificial Intelligence In The Criminal Justice System, Dan Hunter, Mirko Bagaric, Nigel Stobbs

Florida State University Law Review

Machine learning techniques are transforming the manner in which much of the legal system works, and criminal justice is the area which will be most fundamentally changed. Given the fundamental rights and interests at stake in the criminal justice system, this is also the field where the unthinking application of artificial intelligence ("AI") is most troubling, and where there is the greatest threat to individual rights and the likelihood of unanticipated damage to the rule of law. These problems will occur (and are occurring) throughout the criminal justice system: from data-driven predictive policing systems in the criminal investigation process, through …
