Social Media As An Innovative Policy Tool: Lessons And Recommendations From The City Of Austin, Jayce L. Farmer, William A. Costello Jr.
Social Media As An Innovative Policy Tool: Lessons And Recommendations From The City Of Austin, Jayce L. Farmer, William A. Costello Jr.
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Social media brings opportunities for local governments to innovatively engage the public to enhance service delivery. Using the City of Austin, Texas as a backdrop, we assess the Austin Police Department’s utilization of social media in its communication efforts around community policing. This assessment develops a practical model to evaluate its community policing communication policies and practices by way of social media. The findings from this assessment provide several lessons and recommendations for practitioners to use in their efforts to integrate social media into public service delivery. These lessons and recommendations drawn from this case can provide an example of …
Public Schools At-Risk: Examining A Century Of U.S. Media Coverage Of "Unsatisfactory Student Performance" And The Rise Of School Privatization, Jeffrey Frenkiewich, Joseph J. Onosko
Public Schools At-Risk: Examining A Century Of U.S. Media Coverage Of "Unsatisfactory Student Performance" And The Rise Of School Privatization, Jeffrey Frenkiewich, Joseph J. Onosko
Democracy & Education
Throughout the 20th century, community-owned and operated public schooling was viewed in the United States as an essential mechanism for advancing the country’s democratic ideals, institutions, and economic interests. But the first decades of the 21st century has witnessed a historic shift away from this commitment to public schools, as federal and state lawmakers created taxpayer-funded policies supportive of private school vouchers and for-profit charter schools. The authors examine more than 100 years of national newspaper coverage related to the perennial problem of ‘unsatisfactory student performance,’ particularly changes in terminology used to describe these students and explanations for their ‘unsatisfactory …

City Of Lorain Slum And Blight Analysis: Final Report, Kirby Date, Charlie Post, Rachel Riemenschneider
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The City of Lorain engaged the CSU Center for Community Planning and Development to assist with developing a rationale for defining Blighted Properties and Blighted Areas within the City. These definitions will be incorporated into the City’s Code of Ordinances in order to provide criteria for allocating funds from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). The criteria and analysis method can also be useful to the City in prioritizing neighborhoods at the block group level which are in need of rehabilitation.
The full report outlines the key issues, and explores alternative …
What Factors Predict Upper Body Push To Pull Ratios In Professional Firefighters?, Justin J. Merrigan, Adam A. Burke, Marcie B. Fyock-Martin, Joel R. Martin
What Factors Predict Upper Body Push To Pull Ratios In Professional Firefighters?, Justin J. Merrigan, Adam A. Burke, Marcie B. Fyock-Martin, Joel R. Martin
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 1605-1614, 2020. Shoulder joint injuries are common for professional firefighters. A potential cause of shoulder injury is an imbalance between anterior (push) and posterior (pull) shoulder joint musculature. Understanding what contributes to these imbalances may help to identify areas needing improvement. The purpose of this study was to investigate different push to pull (P2P) ratios and the relationships among common upper body fitness assessments, body composition, and push to pull (P2P) ratios in firefighters. Thirty-three professional firefighters completed the following testing protocol: one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press, pull-up repetitions to failure, push-up repetitions to …

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
This presentation will detail practices and procedures faculty and staff can take in a virtual environment to be more equitable, inclusive and diverse minded. Now more than ever, it is integral to not only advocate for our underserved student populations, but actively support and engage these students in practices that equitable and inclusive for all. Now more than ever, it is vital that institutions across the US recognize the injustices that often plaque our communities of color and underserved populations; thus, it is critical that faculty and staff make a conscious and intentional effort to do better. As the people …

An Evolution Of Legal Rights For Guantanamo Bay Detainees: Habeas Corpus In The 21st Century, Jennifer Hirst
Student Theses
Guantanamo Bay, resting under United States’ jurisdiction since the early 20th century, has infamously stood as the symbol for where alleged terrorists and constitutional protections disappear. However, between the years of 2004 – 2008, the United States Supreme Court ruled on four landmark cases, gradually providing Guantanamo Bay detainees constitutional protections and access to the writ of habeas corpus – allowing detainees for the first time to challenge the legalities behind their detentions. Subsequently, judicial and executive powers have continuously contested one another, as Supreme Court rulings and documents released by the Bush Administration have intentionally aimed to minimize the …

Never Letting A Good Crisis Go To Waste: Canadian Interdiction Of Asylum Seekers, Sean Rehaag, Janet Song, Alexander Toope
Never Letting A Good Crisis Go To Waste: Canadian Interdiction Of Asylum Seekers, Sean Rehaag, Janet Song, Alexander Toope
Articles & Book Chapters
This article examines two moments of crisis at Canada’s border with the United States: the aftermath of September 11th, 2001 (“9/11”) and the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canadian government leveraged both crises to offshore responsibilities for asylum seekers onto the United States. In the first case, Canada took advantage of U.S. preoccupations with border security shortly after 9/11 to persuade the United States to sign the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement (“STCA”)—an agreement that allows Canada to direct back asylum seekers who present themselves at land ports of entry on the Canada-U.S. border. In the second case, Canada used heightened anxieties …

Utilizing In-Vehicle Computing Devices To Exchange Information During A Traffic Stop, Michael Angermann, Tajinder Gadh
Utilizing In-Vehicle Computing Devices To Exchange Information During A Traffic Stop, Michael Angermann, Tajinder Gadh
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes techniques directed at utilizing in-vehicle computing devices to facilitate an electronic traffic stop process that enables the electronic exchange of information between a police officer and a vehicle operator. This electronic exchange of information facilitates safer and less-stressful interactions during traffic stops. The information exchanged through this process includes, but is not limited to, copies of the operator’s driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. By exchanging the information electronically, a police officer can perform their initial investigation without approaching the vehicle on foot.
