Socially Aware Network User Mobility Analysis And Novel Approaches On Aerial Mobile Wireless Network Deployment, Ismail Uluturk Apr 2020

Socially Aware Network User Mobility Analysis And Novel Approaches On Aerial Mobile Wireless Network Deployment, Ismail Uluturk

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Service demand patterns for wireless networks are evolving with the technological developments in areas such as personal computing, unmanned vehicles, and internet-of-things, where increasing mobile service demand is one of the significant challenges introduced. In addition to these new intrinsic dynamics, natural disasters and societal upheaval are also disrupting the conventional patterns of network demand. Situations like damaged infrastructure due to a natural disaster or large numbers of displaced people caused by political strife and social upheaval demand flexible, rapidly deployable network architectures. The increasing demands of next-generation communication services are straining the capabilities of the traditional approach of the …

The Rural Educator

Violence prevention is of the utmost concern in some schools. For various reasons, rural schools face a number of challenges that may prevent them from implementing strong, evidence-based violence prevention initiatives. Given that the Internet houses a plethora of cost-free resources on threat assessment and violence prevention in schools, rural educators may consult the internet for information. However, because little is known about the composition and quality of such resources, it is important that they are properly evaluated. As such, the purpose of the present study was to compare existing, free, online school-based threat assessment resources to an evidence-based threat …

The Nexus Of Access To Information, Good Governance, And Investment Negotiation, Mahmoud Elsaman Apr 2020

The Nexus Of Access To Information, Good Governance, And Investment Negotiation, Mahmoud Elsaman

Washington International Law Journal

One advantage of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms is the confidentiality that they provide. Negotiations preceding and during dispute resolution proceedings are no exception to the rule of privacy. However, when governments are involved in negotiations, confidentiality may contradict the free access to information as a fundamental human right that plays a significant role in sustaining good governance by promoting transparency and government accountability. While there are escalating efforts to enhance the right to access information related to investment arbitration proceedings, not all investment disputes are settled through investment arbitration. A significant number of investment disputes are settled directly through investment …

Digital Evidence In Criminal Cases Before The U.S. Courts Of Appeal: Trends And Issues For Consideration, Martin Novak

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Though the use of computer forensics in criminal investigations has expanded in recent years, there is little empirical evidence about the prevalence of the use of digital evidence in the court system and its impact on prosecution outcomes. This paper was an examination of criminal cases before the United States Courts of Appeal in which legal issues were related to digital evidence. The purpose of this research was to determine the most common legal basis for appeals relating to the introduction or exclusion of digital evidence, the frequency with which cases involving an appeal regarding digital evidence affirmed or reversed …

A Framework To Detect Presentation Attacks, Laeticia Etienne Apr 2020

A Framework To Detect Presentation Attacks, Laeticia Etienne

Master of Science in Information Technology Theses

Biometric-based authentication systems are becoming the preferred choice to replace password-based authentication systems. Among several variations of biometrics (e.g., face, eye, fingerprint), iris-based authentication is commonly used in every day applications. In iris-based authentication systems, iris images from legitimate users are captured and certain features are extracted to be used for matching during the authentication process. Literature works suggest that iris-based authentication systems can be subject to presentation attacks where an attacker obtains printed copy of the victim’s eye image and displays it in front of an authentication system to gain unauthorized access. Such attacks can be performed by displaying …

Views Of A Fast-Moving Pandemic: A Survey Of Granite Staters’ Responses To Covid-19, Thomas G. Safford, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Thomas Safford and Lawrence Hamilton report the results of a Granite State Panel survey (March 17-26), asking New Hampshire residents about their views concerning government responses to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and whether they changed their daily routine because of the pandemic. They report that New Hampshire residents who approve of President Trump’s handling of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and those who regularly watch Fox News are less likely than others to have made major changes in their routines due to COVID-19. Granite Staters have polarized opinions about President Trump’s handling of the pandemic: 40 …

Drones For Improving Traffic Safety In Riti Communities In Washington State, Xuegang (Jeff) Ban, Daniel Abramson, Yiran Zhang

CSET Project Reports

Transportation and traffic safety is a primary concern in Rural, Isolated, Tribal, or Indigenous (RITI) communities in Washington (WA) State. Parallel to this, while emerging technologies (e.g., connected/autonomous vehicles, drones) have been developed and tested in addressing traffic safety issues, they are often not widely shared in RITI communities for various reasons. Compared with other technological advances, drone technologies have been rapidly improved and can be flexibly applied to multiple fields, including engineering, agriculture and disaster managements. The goal of this study is to explore and synthesize the opportunities, challenges and scenarios that drone technologies can assist to resolve traffic …

"The Tyranny Of The Majority" A Framework Proposal To Assess The Moral Justification Of Voter Identification Laws In The United States, Sally Jordan Apr 2020

"The Tyranny Of The Majority" A Framework Proposal To Assess The Moral Justification Of Voter Identification Laws In The United States, Sally Jordan

Honors Theses

One of the most fundamental rights of democratic citizens is the right to vote. As a result, voters are entitled to equal opportunity to access the polls. Yet recently, states have begun instituting policies that impact individual access to polls, such as voter identification laws.

Since the 2013 dismantling of the Voting Rights Act, 35 states across the United States implemented voter identification laws varying in strictness and the forms of identification they accept. Numerous studies and articles have been written regarding the justification of these voter identification laws in conjunction with their disproportionate effects on certain minorities; however, many …

Evaluation Of Neutron Skyshine Contributions During Injection At An Electron Synchrotron Facility Using Fluka, Andrew D. Hastings

LSU Master's Theses

The Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) is a 1.5 giga-electron volt (GeV) electron synchrotron research facility under the jurisdiction of Louisiana State University (LSU). When originally constructed in 1992, CAMD was surrounded by pasture and woodland. Over the past several years, urban development of the area has found CAMD bracketed by a shopping center, apartment complex, and business offices. These developments raised concerns amongst the CAMD radiation safety personnel regarding an increased potential for public exposure to radiation. To ensure compliance with the annual public effective dose equivalent limit of 1 milli-sievert (mSv), the radiation monitoring program was …

Academic Honesty, Professional Integrity, And Undergraduate Engineering Students: Exploring The Connections, S. Amy Skyles, Jeffrey W. Jennings Apr 2020

Academic Honesty, Professional Integrity, And Undergraduate Engineering Students: Exploring The Connections, S. Amy Skyles, Jeffrey W. Jennings

Dissertations

One benefit of inculcating professionalism into engineering degree program curricula is a measure of the extent to which future practitioners adopt an engineering code of ethics (Abaté, 2011; Davis, 2006). Studies have indicated more dishonesty among engineering students than other groups of undergraduate learners, but the effects of technology on dishonesty in the classroom was not addressed (Bowers, 1964; McCabe et al., 2012). An explanatory, sequential mixed methods study was designed to explain to what degree course pedagogical practices and attitudes of civil, architectural and environmental engineering students of various academic levels (freshman/sophomore and senior) relate to academic dishonesty. The …

Do States’ Immigrant-Friendly Policies Improve The Health Of Children Of Immigrants? The Impact Of Driver’S License Policies For Undocumented Immigrants And “Sanctuary” Policies On Access And Use Of Health Care, Heather Koball, Seth Hartig Apr 2020

Do States’ Immigrant-Friendly Policies Improve The Health Of Children Of Immigrants? The Impact Of Driver’S License Policies For Undocumented Immigrants And “Sanctuary” Policies On Access And Use Of Health Care, Heather Koball, Seth Hartig

Graduate School of Education

If 10.5 million undocumented immigrants are unable or afraid to access health care, medical needs will go unmet and, in the face of COVID-19, lives may be lost. This report explores how immigrant-friendly policies increase the chances that children of immigrants receive preventative health care, thus reducing the likelihood of having unmet medical needs and potentially reducing the chances of disease outbreaks.

State Prosecutors At The Center Of Mass Imprisonment And Criminal Justice Reform, Nora V. Demleitner Apr 2020

State Prosecutors At The Center Of Mass Imprisonment And Criminal Justice Reform, Nora V. Demleitner

Scholarly Articles

State prosecutors around the country have played a crucial role in mass imprisonment. Little supervision and virtually unsurpassed decision making power have provided them with unrivaled influence over the size, growth, and composition of our criminal justice system. They decide which cases to prosecute, whether to divert a case, whether to offer a plea, and what sentence to recommend. Their impact does not stop at sentencing. They weigh in on alternative dockets, supervision violations, parole release, and even clemency requests. But they are also part of a larger system that constrains them. Funding, judicial limits on their power, and legislative …

Measles, Chickenpox, And Other Preventable Diseases: Why Stricter Vaccine Exemptions Are A Must-Proposed Legislation For Stricter Vaccine Exemption Standards, Eleanor H. Sills Apr 2020

Measles, Chickenpox, And Other Preventable Diseases: Why Stricter Vaccine Exemptions Are A Must-Proposed Legislation For Stricter Vaccine Exemption Standards, Eleanor H. Sills

Florida State University Law Review

The outbreak of measles in 2019 was the largest measles outbreak since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared it eliminated in 2000. With measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases on the rise, there is growing concern that vulnerable populations will be exposed to these diseases, which can lead to death. One major factor in this increase is the lackadaisical vaccine exemption policies that are implemented in the United States. If vaccine exemption policies were more like those of states that have lower exemption rates and included some inquiry into the sincerity and genuineness of the requesting parent's religious beliefs, …

Neighborhoods And Mental Health: Understanding The Social, Environmental And Structural Factors To Better Support Our Youth And Communities, Meghan Murtagh Apr 2020

Neighborhoods And Mental Health: Understanding The Social, Environmental And Structural Factors To Better Support Our Youth And Communities, Meghan Murtagh

Community Engagement Student Work

The social, structural and environmental characteristics of neighborhoods can have a significant impact on the social, emotional, behavioral and cognitive development of children and adolescents. The Center for Disease Control reports every 1 out of 5 children (22%) living below 100% of the federal poverty level have a mental, behavioral and/or developmental disorder (CDC, 2019). Through the utilization of ecological frameworks and a “place” based framework called The Social Determinates of Health, research was conducted to examine the link between neighborhoods and health outcomes in children and adolescents. These findings were then shared through a workshop with the target audience …

The First Step Act Of 2018: One Small Step Toward Social Change, Mary Teresa I. Cuzzupe Apr 2020

The First Step Act Of 2018: One Small Step Toward Social Change, Mary Teresa I. Cuzzupe

Community Engagement Student Work

Throughout history, the United States has toggled between punitive and rehabilitative policies within the criminal justice system, creating social changes that have contributed to racial inequalities within policy and practice that are still being dealt with today. The First Step Act of 2018 (Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed, Safely Transitioning Every Person Act) is a federal prison reform attempting to implement rehabilitative social change within a society that is still not ready for it. The act is hoping to assist offenders with re-entry by reducing recidivism with a new risk and needs assessment, decreasing mandatory minimum sentences by allocating good …

Police Social Work In Minnesota: Starting The Conversation, Jenny Ellsworth, Taylor Fish, Alison Niesen, Natalia Pitts

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Even with enhanced police officer training focused on improving responses to mental illness, chemical dependency, and other crisis-related calls, police officers remain ill-equipped to serve as trained mental health professionals. Officers respond to these service-related calls more frequently than crime-related calls, which is why community partnerships between police officers and social workers are needed to promote the safety and well-being of people in crisis.

Impartiality: A Comparison Of Legal Processes In The United States And Italy, Robert Borden Apr 2020

Impartiality: A Comparison Of Legal Processes In The United States And Italy, Robert Borden

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the constitutional guarantees of impartiality granted in both the United States and Italian constitutions. Aided by the presentation of these two constitutional legal systems, this paper will attempt to break apart the elements of each system and point out key differences. By pointing out the differences in these systems including variations in their founding documents, the structure of the courts, the role of the judges, the role of the advocates, and the role of other key players, this paper will show that while individual cases in both countries are exposed to multiple biases throughout the legal process, …
