A Closer Look At The Modern Bond Between Dogs And Humans, Mallory Colwell
A Closer Look At The Modern Bond Between Dogs And Humans, Mallory Colwell
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
For this project, I wanted to take a closer look at a human's bond with their dog. This bond has been there for centuries, but recently has produced some distinct phenomenon. I believe that dog movies, dog birthdays, and dog social media showcase the modern human to dog relationship. Looking at these occurrences can give a better picture our bonds with our pets. It can also provide insight for ourselves as people.
Early Social-Emotional Development In Children Of Mothers With Psychological Risk, Haylie Demercy
Early Social-Emotional Development In Children Of Mothers With Psychological Risk, Haylie Demercy
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Healthy child development depends on the ability of parents to put in necessary involvement and attention to respond to children's emotions and communication cues (Roggman, 2016). Maternal depression (Paulson et al., 2006) and parenting stress (Coyl et al., 2002) can reduce maternal responsiveness and is a risk factor for negative child social-emotional outcomes (El-Sheikh et al., 2009). The purpose of this study is to investigate how participation in Early Head Start (EHS), an early intervention program that provides families with individualized intervention services, affects social-emotional development for children of mothers with high and low psychological risk. Extant longitudinal data from …
How Dogs Representation In Cinema Reflects How They Are Seen In The Real World, Arden Fayard
How Dogs Representation In Cinema Reflects How They Are Seen In The Real World, Arden Fayard
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Dogs were introduced very early into the movie industry, just as they were to every other aspect of our lives. Over the decades, the way we used and represented dogs in movies changed. This research stems from an interest in seeing if representation of dogs in movies changed in response to their roles in people's lives.
Associations Between Parental Attachment, Peer Attachment, And Moral Disengagement, Jonah Hickman
Associations Between Parental Attachment, Peer Attachment, And Moral Disengagement, Jonah Hickman
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
The goal of this study was to understand whether quality of attachment relationships with parents and peers affects moral disengagement. Attachment styles, founded in our parent's responsiveness to us in early childhood (Bowlby, 1973) carry into adulthood and predict relational functioning throughout development (Simpson & Rholes, 2017). Early attachment generalizes to peer relationships in childhood and in adolescence (Dykes et al., 2008). Moral disengagement, justification of actions contrary to the character of the perpetrator, is a form of anxious and dysfunctional behavior (Bandura, 2016). It is used to preserve self-concept while violating core values (Bandura, 2016). There is evidence that …

"Botley, You Need To Listen!" Exploring Young Children's Interactions With Robots While Learning To Code, Selendra Lewis, Rebecca Peterson, Kathleen Bullock
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Recently, there's been a surge of research about child-robot interactions as robots are being used in classrooms and homes in increasing numbers. Many of these studies are conducted in a laboratory-like setting followed by a survey. This project is unique in that we primarily rely on observational data in classrooms where students are using robots to learn math and Computational Thinking skills including Spatial Reasoning, Algorithmic Thinking, Debugging, and Decomposition. While the main purpose of the larger project is to develop curriculum and assessments for these skills, the structure of the FSRS project proposal allows us to also analyze these …
Take A Chance Or Play It Safe? The Influence Of Risk Orientation On Public Opinion Toward Immigration Policy, Emilee Matheson, Lizzy Bickmore
Take A Chance Or Play It Safe? The Influence Of Risk Orientation On Public Opinion Toward Immigration Policy, Emilee Matheson, Lizzy Bickmore
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Despite well-documented potential gains from immigration, US immigration policy strictly limits immigration flows. This divergence between policy and research findings may be driven by negative individual attitudes toward immigration. Certain factors such as age, education level, political ideology, religion, and exposure to immigrants have all been shown to impact an individual's preference on immigration policy. Other theories, such as the labor market hypothesis or the fiscal burden hypothesis, point to the perceived economic threats of immigration as a leading cause of anti-immigration sentiment. Our paper focuses on risk orientation, a characteristic that determines an individual's trade-offs between risk and return, …
"They Need To Grow Up": Variations Among Legal Definitions Of Minors, Yocheved Ramirez
"They Need To Grow Up": Variations Among Legal Definitions Of Minors, Yocheved Ramirez
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Legally defining adulthood seems straightforward: individuals reach the age of majority at 18 and are granted key privileges based on age. But, that definition is actually pretty vague. We see evidence for that vagueness when we look at legal culpability—policies around waiving minors into adult court vary by state which means that there is no national consensus on how age affects understanding the consequences of one's actions. Some of the justifications against minor criminal culpability include undeveloped cognition (cognitive development theory) and a lack of moral maturity. This research poster seeks to investigate how the legal system differentiates minors from adults …
The Impacts Of Sars-Cov-2 On Student Mental Health And Academic Outcomes, Janice Snow
The Impacts Of Sars-Cov-2 On Student Mental Health And Academic Outcomes, Janice Snow
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
In the spring 2020 semester, colleges and universities throughout the country made sudden shifts to online instruction due to SARS-CoV-2. Many institutions had as little as 1 weeks' notice and 64% of instructors reported having no online teaching experience (Johnson, Veletsianos, & Seaman, 2020). These educational adjustments are not the only added stressors for students and instructors. Additional stressors during the pandemic included health concerns for self and family members, childcare responsibilities increasing for individuals with families, financial instability, and finding accommodations for persons with disabilities. We conducted two separate but related surveys of undergraduate students during the end of …

What's The Difference Between Undergraduate Online Students And Face-To-Face Students?, Janice Snow
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Online education has been growing at increasing rates. Online higher education students increased from 21.4% of students taking at least one online class in 2007, to 32.5% of students in 2012 (Kentnor, 2015). To date, there is no available research regarding differential resources relating to distance and traditional students in traditional university settings, however, logic dictates that online students may not receive the same resources as traditional students (e.g., in-person computer labs, counseling services, additional student support offices). Meaningful interactions with faculty and peers, honors societies, clubs, research and service-learning opportunities, academic and logistical support are not commonly available to …

Equity, Engagement, And Health: School Organisational Issues And Priorities During Covid-19, Jose Eos R. Trinidad
Equity, Engagement, And Health: School Organisational Issues And Priorities During Covid-19, Jose Eos R. Trinidad
Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has disrupted and posed great challenges for kindergarten-grade12 education systems. Initial studies on education and COVID-19 often focus on technology use, student learning, and school reopening plans. However, debates on the form of instruction become futile when stakeholders are unclear about what the competing values, issues, and priorities are. Using exploratory data analysis of a representative sample of US teachers and school leaders, this paper highlights key organisational issues and priorities in terms of addressing academic achievement gaps, students’ online engagement, and teachers’ and students’ health. More fundamentally, deeper issues are uncovered like equity for …
Lady Problems: A Study On The Effect Of Perceived Femininity When Evaluating Female Presidential Candidates, Mackenzie O. Marquess
Lady Problems: A Study On The Effect Of Perceived Femininity When Evaluating Female Presidential Candidates, Mackenzie O. Marquess
Communication Theses
There is currently an observable gender gap associated with political leadership. Though many have tried, no woman has successfully campaigned for the presidency. Historically, media coverage of female candidates is vastly different from coverage of their male counterparts and it is well established that the media has significant control over public perception of candidates. This study examines media coverage of female candidates in an attempt to understand the rhetoric that consistently positions women as unelectable regardless of their experience or political prowess. This study analyzes post-debate commentary from the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2020 election beginning on June …

Improving Nurse Engagement Through Unit Practice Councils, Pavna Sloan
Improving Nurse Engagement Through Unit Practice Councils, Pavna Sloan
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Problem: According to the Advisory Board (2014), nurses are the least engaged group of healthcare employees. Healthcare organizations with a high percentage of disengaged nurses have increased nurse turnover rates and decreased patient satisfaction and safety scores (Kutney-Lee et al., 2016). Shared governance, in the form of unit practice councils (UPCs), is an underutilized model healthcare organizations can implement to increase nurse engagement.
Context: The UPC is an example of shared governance to engage and empower nurses to affect changes that impact their practice. This a multi-site health system with 21 medical centers in Northern California. This system would …

Revisiting The Role Of Physicians In Assisted Living And Residential Care Settings, Sarah Dys, Lindsey Smith, Ozcan Tunalilar, Paula C. Carder
Institute on Aging Publications
As the United States population ages, a higher share of adults is likely to use long-term services and supports. This change increases physicians’ need for information about assisted living and residential care (AL/RC) settings, which provide supportive care and housing to older adults. Unlike skilled nursing facilities, states regulate AL/RC settings through varying licensure requirements enforced by state agencies, resulting in differences in the availability of medical and nursing services. Where some settings provide limited skilled nursing care, in others, residents rely on resident care coordinators, or their own physicians to oversee chronic conditions, medications, and treatments. The following narrative …

A Pedagogical Approach To Learning, Jonathan Davis
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio is a collection of four projects that represent a collective study in multiple modes and methods of pedagogical approaches relevant to the modern paradigm of the field of education. Though not originally written with the intention of being unified under a single theme, as the portfolio was being assembled a cohesion emerged among the four projects stemming from their shared emphasis on pedagogical applications. Each of the four projects is an effort to explore a unique perspective regarding a particular concept or aspect of the field of education, or to address an issue in a unique way organic …

Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Mandarin-Speaking Undergraduate Students In The United States, Enhao Wang
Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Mandarin-Speaking Undergraduate Students In The United States, Enhao Wang
Master's Projects and Capstones
ABSTRACT
Studying in the United States is many Chinese students' dream, but those who manage to achieve it encounter two main problems. The first one is the language barrier and the second one cultural shock. Chine is the highest provider of international students with 30% from statistics of 2017/2018 class. The primary language spoken by Chinese is the Mandarin language. All the other languages come in as a second language to most Chinese, including English. When they travel out of their country to further education as students, they are hampered by language barriers as they navigate through their struggle.

Meaningful Recognition And The Effect On A Medical-Surgical Unit's Staff Satisfaction And Retention, Lindsey Greene
MSN Capstone Projects
The current state of the American healthcare system is riddled with challenges. Nurse administrators are faced with the formidable tasks of decreasing operating costs; improving the patient experience; delivering high-quality and safe patient care; and decreasing the mounting rates of nurse turnover. Nurse leaders must understand the complexities of their work environment, including the key drivers for nurse satisfaction and retention. In 2005, the American Association of Critical Nurses developed six standards for creating a healthy work environment. (American Association of Critical Care Nurses, 2016). An adult, medical-surgical unit at a South Texas hospital was faced with rising rates of …

Interventions And Supports To Ameliorate Math Anxiety In K-12 Schools: A Meta-Analysis Of Experimental Group Design Research, Madeline Rose Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
"Math anxiety is commonly defined as a feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear that interferes with math performance" (Ashcraft, 2002, p. 181). Symptoms of math anxiety are reported by 33% of students by the time they reach the age of 15, possibly contributing to this workforce dilemma (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2013). Many models and perspectives of math anxiety have been established including conceptualizing math anxiety as a function of working memory deficits, sociocultural conditioning, lack of reappraisal, and anxiety as a precursor to escape-maintained behavior. Math anxiety is more common in individuals with certain disabilities, such as …

Psychological Aspects Of Adolescent Diabetes, Dawn Ziegler
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Abstract
Adolescence is a time of swift change physically, psychologically, and socially. A severe onset of diabetes and the life-long treatment required can cause significant changes for adolescents integrating this chronic illness into their identity. This study examined the current literature surrounding self-esteem in the newly diagnosed adolescent with diabetes, the quality of evidence, and the knowledge gaps addressing the social and personal challenges of advancing through life with this illness. A systematic search contained articles between 2010-2020. Key search terms included adolescents, diabetes type 1, behavioral approaches, emotional health interventions, self-esteem, self-worth, self-image, psychological, psychosocial, coping, stress, and resilience. …

Student Perceptions Of An Inquiry‐Based Molecular Biology Lecture And Lab Following A Mid‐Semester Transition To Online Teaching, Jeremy L. Hsu, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The transition to online learning in spring 2020 was abrupt for both students and instructors. While many instructors moved to asynchronous classes, some institutions relied more heavily on synchronous online courses. Here, we evaluate student perceptions of an inquiry‐based molecular biology lecture and lab course following this transition by comparing student survey responses from spring 2019, when the lecture and lab were fully in person, to spring 2020, when the lecture and lab started in person before transitioning to a synchronous online format. Students were asked to identify the main factors that supported their learning in lecture and lab, characterize …

Out-Of-Control Covid-19 Pandemic Hampers The Nationalism, Aly Hiko, Austin Horng En Wang
Political Science Faculty Research
© The Author(s) 2020. Early studies show that the COVID-19 pandemic causes the rally-around-the-flag effect and increases the level of nationalism among the voters after the outbreak. However, how long does this boost last? Voters may cognitively withdraw their identification to the beloved country if the pandemic is rampant in where they live as well as when the government fails to address it thoroughly. We conducted a pre-registered MTurk experiment (n = 606) on 20 April 2020, in the United States—3 months after the first confirmed case and weeks after the large-scale lockdown. Results show that US subjects who were …

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's Life And Impact, Sonja Mowery
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
This essay focuses on the life, challenges, and impact of psychology professor Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Dr. Ford’s name first appeared in the media after a leak that exposed the presence of a letter sent to Senator Feinstein informing her that Judge Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her in the summer of 1982. Dr. Ford was motivated to send this letter when she learned that Kavanaugh’s name was listed on the president’s shortlist for the Supreme Court Judge to fill Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat after his retirement in July of 2018. When Dr. Ford finally decided to tell her story …
