Key Expert Stakeholder Perceptions Of The Law Of Genomics: Identified Problems And Potential Solutions, Lauren E. Clatch
Key Expert Stakeholder Perceptions Of The Law Of Genomics: Identified Problems And Potential Solutions, Lauren E. Clatch
Law Faculty Publications
The law on human genomics in the United States is currently in transition and under debate. The rapid evolution of the science, burgeoning clinical research, and growing clinical application pose serious challenges for federal and state law. Newer genomic assays, such as gene panels, whole exome and whole genome sequencing that can assess many or all of a patient’s genetic variants are different from former genetic assays that consist of assessing for variants in specific genes that indicate risk for medical conditions and for single-gene Mendelian disorders. Overall, single-gene genetic testing has primarily been used for risk prediction, disease diagnosis, …
The Economic Efficiency Case Against Business Tax Privacy, Daniel Schaffa
The Economic Efficiency Case Against Business Tax Privacy, Daniel Schaffa
Law Faculty Publications
By statute, business tax returns are not publicly available. But with public access, investors would acquire useful information that would help them make better investing decisions; business tax compliance and planning would become more uniform, preventing tax-savvy firms from gaining an advantage over other relatively more productive firms; and businesses could learn from one another, which would spare firms the cost of redundantly developing the same tax strategies. In the long run, these efficiency gains could result in lower prices, higher wages, more innovation, more leisure, and better investment returns. In the debate over business tax privacy, these sorts of …

“What enabled me to take part in the effort to free our daughters and sons to achieve whatever their talents equipped them to accomplish, with no artificial barriers blocking their way?”
—Ruth Bader Ginsburg
On September 18, 2020, we mourned the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom many considered not just a cultural icon, but a national treasure. Among many other things, Justice Ginsburg became a later-in-life feminist “rock star,” celebrated for her rousing and impassioned dissents, her fearless defense of equality and autonomy rights, her championing of civil rights, and her persistent determination in the face of injustice. …

The Influence Of Sports Facilities' Accessibility, Motivation, And Satisfaction On Word-Of-Mouth And Re-Participation Intentions Of Athletes With Physical Disabilities, Thee Trongjitpituk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
More than a billion people are estimated to live with some form of disability, or about 15% of the world's population and the number is still growing. People with disabilities are less likely to participate in sports due to several physical barriers they face. In an effort to find ways to increase the sports participation rate of people with disabilities, the concept of marketing (satisfaction, word-of-mouth intention, and re-participation intention) was applied to the field of accessibility for the first time. This study consisted of three objectives: (1) to find out the dimension of sports facilities' accessibility and motivation, (2) …

In addition, to help business to market to the right target and increase the intention to use, the study investigates factors influencing Intention to use APL by employing Structural Equation Model (SEM). The framework is developed based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and other external factors. The questionaries were conducted for both methods with 718 observation and 500 responses, randomly selected. The results show that variables best predict probability to use APL is price set with discount, followed by …

Avoidance Of The English Passive Construction By L1 Chinese Learners, Yang Wang
Avoidance Of The English Passive Construction By L1 Chinese Learners, Yang Wang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research investigated avoidance behaviour as one of the strategies L2 learners may resort to because of L1-L2 differences, or the non-existence of L2 structures for L1 learners (Schachter 1974; Dagut and Laufer 1985). Schachter (1974) proposed the Avoidance Behaviour Hypothesis, whereby L2 learners were likely to avoid using some L2 structures due to the aforementioned difficulties in L2 acquisition. Later researchers, i.e. Dagut and Laufer (1985), and Laufer and Eliasson (1993), claimed that L1-L2 differences tended to play a role, or at least would be the 'best predictor' (1993, p46) of avoidance. However, recent researchers, i.e. Thiamtawan and Pongpairoj …

Innovative Zero-Waste System For Building Wastewater Recycling And Food Waste Management, Thammananya Sakcharoen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urbanization leads to concerns about environmental impacts due to the increasing food waste and wastewater generation. The study aims to develop an innovative zero-waste system for food waste and wastewater management in the building using the combination of a single-stage anaerobic digester and the Moving Bed Biofilm Reaction-Membrane Bioreactor (MBBR-MBR). The comprehensive analysis for innovative zero-waste system development is conducted including (1) survey and interview the target market group (universities) to determine the factors affecting the intention to use the zero-waste system ; (2) develop a zero-waste system prototype, and test operation for measuring the performances ; (3) evaluate the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: The figure of eight walk test (F8W) is a measurement tool that examines the ability to walk on a curved path. Adding secondary tasks to the F8W test may increase its ability to predict falls in older adults. This research aimed 1.) to examine the accuracy of the F8W test and the F8W test with dual-tasking for predicting future falls in older adults; 2.) to investigate the reliability and the concurrent validity of the F8W test with and without dual-task in older adults. Methods: Eighty older adults between the ages of 60 and 80 were recruited. At the beginning …

Synthesis And Anti-Psoriatic Activity Of A Mycophenolic Acid-Curcumin Conjugate As A Mutual Prodrug, Yonelian Yuyun
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Due to its several mechanisms of action, curcumin (CUR) has been employed as adjuvant therapy in treating psoriasis. Limited oral bioavailability was the problem for the development of CUR for therapeutic purposes. Therefore, many approaches, including the prodrug strategy, have been devised to address Cur's drawbacks. CUR was conjugated with mycophenolic acid (MPA) as a new prodrug in this research. Characterization of MPA-CUR structure was done by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and MS. MPA-CUR showed water solubility at 0.73 μM and log P at 2.33, respectively. MPA-CUR was found more stable in buffer solutions than CUR and MPA. In vitro anti-psoriatic …
