Beyond Internal And External: A Taxonomy Of Mechanisms For Regulating Corporate Conduct, Ann Lipton Jan 2020

Beyond Internal And External: A Taxonomy Of Mechanisms For Regulating Corporate Conduct, Ann Lipton

Publications

Corporate discourse often distinguishes between internal and external regulation of corporate behavior. The former refers to internal decisionmaking processes within corporations and the relationships between investors and corporate managers, and the latter refers to the substantive mandates and prohibitions that dictate how corporations must behave with respect to the rest of society. At the same time, most commenters would likely agree that these categories are too simplistic; relationships between investors and managers are often regulated with a view toward benefitting other stakeholders.

As a result, this Article will seek to develop a taxonomy of tactics available to, and used by, …

The Emotions Of Science: Using Social Media To Gauge Public Emotions Toward Research Topics, Cole C. Freeman Jan 2020

The Emotions Of Science: Using Social Media To Gauge Public Emotions Toward Research Topics, Cole C. Freeman

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Online and in the real world, communities are bonded together by emotional consensus around core issues. Emotional responses to scientific findings often play a pivotal role in these core issues. When there is too much diversity of opinion on topics of science, emotions flare up and give rise to conflict. This conflict threatens positive outcomes for research. Emotions have the power to shape how people process new information. They can color the public's understanding of science, motivate policy positions, even change lives. And yet little work has been done to evaluate the public's emotional response to science using quantitative methods. …

Association Of Various Physiological And Fitness Markers To Body Fat Percentage In Physically Inactive Adults, Anthony Mckee Jan 2020

Association Of Various Physiological And Fitness Markers To Body Fat Percentage In Physically Inactive Adults, Anthony Mckee

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Obesity can dramatically and negatively affect many aspects of normal physiological functioning. Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive body fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. Body mass index (BMI) is a widely used approach to quantify body fat in large group settings; however, this method has significant shortcomings with accuracy and estimation. More direct measures such as bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can provide a more reliable and accurate assessment of body fat mass and, therefore reduce the shortcomings of BMI when assessing possible associations with health- and performance-related variables. A plethora of research studies has been conducted …

Rational Design Of Memory-Based Sensors: The Case Of Molecular Calorimeters, Obianuju Augusta Nwokolo Jan 2020

Rational Design Of Memory-Based Sensors: The Case Of Molecular Calorimeters, Obianuju Augusta Nwokolo

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Thermodynamic characterization is crucial for understanding molecular interactions. However, methodologies for measuring heat changes in small open systems are extremely limited. We document a new approach for designing molecular sensors that function as calorimeters: sensors based on memory. To design a memory-based sensor, we take advantage of the unique kinetic properties of nucleic acid scaffolds. Particularly, we elaborate on the differences in folding and unfolding rates in nucleic acid quadruplexes. DNA-based i-motifs unfold fast in response to small heats but do not fold back when the system is equilibrated with surroundings. We translated this behaviour into a molecular memory function …

Wandering is the most life-threatening and commonly reported symptom of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by an inability to maintain spatial orientation. The often deadly consequences of wandering are projected to rise in the coming decades due to the advancing aged population. These upcoming challenges necessitate a more comprehensive understanding of the neurobiology of spatial orientation in order to evaluate novel therapeutic techniques for symptoms such as wandering. The inability to maintain spatial orientation in AD may be due to the pathological degeneration of the hippocampal cholinergic system. This neurological system is conserved across species for its function …
