Perceptions Of Physical Activity Engagement Among African American Emerging Adults At Georgia Southern University - Statesboro Campus, Addison Mickens Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Physical Activity Engagement Among African American Emerging Adults At Georgia Southern University - Statesboro Campus, Addison Mickens

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Introduction: Physical Activity (PA) is critical to the health and well-being of African American emerging adults, ages 18-25. Research suggests that African American (AA) college students engage in less PA than other racial/ethnic groups. Few studies have examined the relationship between the collegiate built environment (CBE) impact on PA in this population. The Social Ecological Model (SEM) and the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) were used to show how the environment facilitates influence on the behavior through physical and social factors affecting the behavior of engaging in PA. Methods: The purpose of this cross-sectional, concurrent multi-method study was to determine barriers …

The Pragmatist’S Call To Democratic Activism In Higher Education, Eric Thomas Weber Jan 2020

The Pragmatist’S Call To Democratic Activism In Higher Education, Eric Thomas Weber

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

This essay defends the Pragmatist’s call to activism in higher education, understanding it as a necessary development of good democratic inquiry. Some criticisms of activism have merit, but I distinguish crass or uncritical activism from judicious activism. I then argue that judicious activism in higher education and in philosophy is not only defensible, but both called for implicitly in the task of democratic education as well as an aspect of what John Dewey has articulated as the supreme intellectual obligation, namely to ensure that inquiry is put to use for the benefit of life.

Permanently Residing Under Color Of Law: A Practitioner's Guide To An Ambiguous Doctrine, Steven Sacco, Sarika Saxena Jan 2020

Permanently Residing Under Color Of Law: A Practitioner's Guide To An Ambiguous Doctrine, Steven Sacco, Sarika Saxena

City University of New York Law Review

New regulations[1] recently issued on the public charge ground of immigrant inadmissibility makes more crucial than ever the need to determine which non-U.S. citizens are and are not eligible for certain public assistance programs. The doctrine known as "PRUCOL," or permanently residing under color of law, establishes public benefit eligibility for non-U.S. citizens in several jurisductions. The doctrine's lack of statutory definition and inconsistent application in the case law makes it notoriously difficult for practitioners and benefit programs to identify who is and is not PRUCOL. For the non-U.S. citizens applying for benefits, and their advocates practicing at the intersection …

Outside Advisers Inside Agencies, Brian D. Feinstein, Daniel J. Hemel Jan 2020

Outside Advisers Inside Agencies, Brian D. Feinstein, Daniel J. Hemel

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Advisory committees are a ubiquitous, yet understudied feature of the administrative state. More than seventy-five thousand experts from out-side the federal government serve on over one thousand committees across the Executive Branch, providing agencies with informed “second opinions” to complement their in-house experts in the civil service. By law, these committees must be “fairly balanced in terms of the points of view represented.” Yet little is known about whether advisory committees live up to this standard, under what circumstances agencies utilize these panels, and how advisory committees influence agency decisionmaking.

This Article sheds light on the composition and operation of …

The Effects Of Harvesting Time On The Physicochemical Components Of Aronia Berry, Sevgi̇ Poyraz Engi̇n, Cevri̇ye Mert

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The aim of this work was to compare 'Nero' and 'Viking' aronia cultivars and to determine the optimum harvest dates of each cultivar for various utilizations. For this purpose, we characterized the changes in both aronia cultivars' physicochemical components over their harvest period and identified the correlations between them. Mean berry weight, dry matter, soluble solid content, antioxidant activity, and anthocyanin content of berries of both cultivars increased until the second and third weeks of September. They then began decreasing gradually, whereas total phenol content and condensed tannins kept increasing until 27 October. It was observed that berries of 'Nero' …

Can Adaptive Management Help Alaska’S Natural Resource Managers Respond To Climate Change?, E. Barrett Ristroph Jan 2020

Can Adaptive Management Help Alaska’S Natural Resource Managers Respond To Climate Change?, E. Barrett Ristroph

Natural Resources Journal

Many legal scholars have called attention to the inability of stationary natural resource management laws to respond to a changing climate. There are various proposals for remedying these laws, including the use of adaptive management, through which resource managers can monitor changes and adjust policies accordingly. Yet there are practical and political challenges to implementing adaptive management. This article considers the extent to which adaptive management has been or could be implemented in response to Alaska’s rapid climate change. Alaska is an important case study as it is warming far more quickly than many other parts of the globe, paving …

A Road Map To Restoring Rivers: How The Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement Might Influence Future Dam Removal And River Restoration Projects, James C. Ish Jan 2020

A Road Map To Restoring Rivers: How The Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement Might Influence Future Dam Removal And River Restoration Projects, James C. Ish

Natural Resources Journal

Throughout the United States dams are approaching the terminus of their original licensing periods and are undergoing re-licensing by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This period of review has prompted extensive studies in these basins to determine the cost-benefits associated with keeping these dams, versus removing and restoring the natural ecosystems that are currently inundated. In situations where a dam is deemed to be no longer economically relevant, and/or a detriment to endangered species or their critical habitat, an agreement for removal and restoration is often proposed as the next step in the management of that basin’s water resources. However, …

The Contributions Of Cyrus, Darius I, And Artaxerxes I To The Decree To Restore And Build Jerusalem, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 2020

The Contributions Of Cyrus, Darius I, And Artaxerxes I To The Decree To Restore And Build Jerusalem, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The question in Daniel 9:25 of who issued the “commandment,” “word,” “decree,” or “command to restore and build Jerusalem,” (NKJV)1 , has occupied Bible scholars for centuries. Three major interpretations have emerged about the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. The first view states that the decree was issued by the Persian King Cyrus the Great (reigned 559-530 BC). The second view was that King Darius I (reigned 522-486 BC) issued the decree. The third view associates the decree with King Artaxerxes I Longimanus (reigned 465-425 BC). Today most scholars hold to the first or second view, the traditional Adventist view supports …

Tailoring Digital Health To Improve The Nutrition And Health Of People With Parkinson’S Disease, Dara Lyn Lobuono Jan 2020

Tailoring Digital Health To Improve The Nutrition And Health Of People With Parkinson’S Disease, Dara Lyn Lobuono

Open Access Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an incurable, neurodegenerative movement disorder, impacting nearly one million Americans. By 2030 the number of people with PD (PwPD) is expected to double and with this growing population, informal caregiver responsibility will also increase. Nutritional status worsens as PD progresses, which impacts cognition, body composition, ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL), and increases caregiver burden. Nutritional screening and intervention for PwPD can improve health outcomes, but are often excluded from PD treatment plans.

Given the negative impact of PD on mobility and increased caregiver burden, digital technology could improve …

Influence Of Parent And Community Factors On Infant Snacking, Amy Michelle Moore Jan 2020

Influence Of Parent And Community Factors On Infant Snacking, Amy Michelle Moore

Open Access Dissertations

Snacking has increased among young children in recent decades, yet little is known about snacking during infancy. Therefore, three studies were conducted to explore the influence of parent and community factors on infant snacking. Across the three studies, findings suggest that infants are snacking on less healthy foods, mothers may offer snacks to prevent hunger and manage infant behavior, and less healthy snacks are widely available in the retail food stores. The first study was a secondary analysis of data from the Nurture study that examined the prevalence of less healthy snack intake at three time points (4-6, 7-9, and …

Space In Transition: A Design Exploration Of A Transition Space In Ban Plainern, Tengzhou Feng

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis concerns a methodology to study transition spaces in traditional Thai houses. The author questions how to inherit and develop traditional architecture for the future generations. Transition spaces of Thai houses are chosen as the places to observe how materials, proportions, spatial compositions, light, shade and shadow affect architecture itself. They represent a relationship between man-made and nature with respect to environment, culture and time. Literature reviews are a supplement to the analytical methods to study architectural spaces and forms of Colin Rowe, Peter Eisenman, Le Corbusier and Juhani Pallasmaa. Then, the methodology is applied to analyse two case …

California Cannabis Regulations And The Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act: A Product Liability Perspective Of Edible Cannabis, Alexis Lazzeri Jan 2020

California Cannabis Regulations And The Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act: A Product Liability Perspective Of Edible Cannabis, Alexis Lazzeri

UC Law Business Journal

From the passage of Proposition 215 to present day, California’s cannabis industry has transformed from access solely for medical patients to a nearly three billion dollar a year industry with legal medicinal and adult-use consumption. With this rise in accessibility, edible cannabis products are being consumed more than ever. “Edibles” are food and drink products infused with cannabis, a mix of THC (i.e., delta 9 - tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (i.e., cannabidiol)—with varying levels of each, depending on the desired effect. CBD is a non-intoxicating compound often used to treat physical ailments and chronic conditions, while THC delivers a euphoric high. …

Covid-19: Proposing A Ketone-Based Metabolic Therapy As A Treatment To Blunt The Cytokine Storm, Patrick C. Bradshaw, William A. Seeds, Alexandra C. Miller, Vikrant R. Mahajan, William M. Curtis

ETSU Faculty Works

Human SARS-CoV-2 infection is characterized by a high mortality rate due to some patients developing a large innate immune response associated with a cytokine storm and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This is characterized at the molecular level by decreased energy metabolism, altered redox state, oxidative damage, and cell death. Therapies that increase levels of (R)-beta-hydroxybutyrate (R-BHB), such as the ketogenic diet or consuming exogenous ketones, should restore altered energy metabolism and redox state. R-BHB activates anti-inflammatory GPR109A signaling and inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome and histone deacetylases, while a ketogenic diet has been shown to protect mice from influenza virus …

Introducing An Optimization- And Explicit Runge-Kutta- Based Approach To Perform Dynamic Flux Balance Analysis, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Rajib Saha

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

in this work we introduce the generalized optimization- and explicit Runge-Kutta-based Approach (oRKA) to perform dynamic flux Balance Analysis (dfBA), which is numerically more accurate and computationally tractable than existing approaches. oRKA is applied to a four-tissue (leaf, root, seed, and stem) model of Arabidopsis thaliana, p-ath773, uniquely capturing the core-metabolism of several stages of growth from seedling to senescence at hourly intervals. Model p-ath773 has been designed to show broad agreement with published plant-scale properties such as mass, maintenance, and senescence, yet leaving reaction-level behavior unconstrainted. Hence, it serves as a framework to study the reaction-level behavior necessary for …
