Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: According to the National Resource Center on Native American Aging (NRCNAA), at least one-fourth of Native American Elders experienced a fall at least once in the past year (Adamsen, 2018). Based on a consult review of the NRCNAA’s fall prevention program, the participants demonstrated limited follow through with the physical exercises because the recommendations were not culturally meaningful. The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a safe mobility program for Elders.
Methods: A literature review was conducted using the PEOP model and the Native American medicine wheel to identify fall risk factors, outline current fall risk assessments …
Occupational Therapy Program For Women Residing In Domestic Violence Shelters, Paige Mccullough, Kelsey Wehe
Occupational Therapy Program For Women Residing In Domestic Violence Shelters, Paige Mccullough, Kelsey Wehe
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background Domestic violence is a public health concern that affects 43.6 million women, or greater than one in three women, each year in the United States (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence [NCADV], n.d.). Following experiences with domestic violence, victims endure various long-term physical and mental health challenges. These challenges negatively affect women’s abilities to carry out many daily occupations, as well as live independently. When a victim flees domestic violence, they often find themselves seeking support and safety from domestic violence shelters. These shelters are designed to focus on the victim’s immediate physical needs and less on their mental health …

Patients' Understanding Of Diabetes Self-Management Education And Support In A Private Primary Care Clinic In Kuala Lumpur: A Qualitative Study, Thanapalan Tharini
Student Works (2020-2029)
Patients with diabetes mellitus should be actively self-managing their disease, since this can aid in producing better glycaemic control. Thus healthcare professionals managing diabetes patients, irrespective of whether they are in the public or private setting, need to focus on educating patients in order to empower them to carry out self-management practices. Little evidence is available to determine whether patients, especially those managed in private primary care clinics, are able to understand the education provided to them on diabetes self-management. This study aimed to explore patients’ comprehension of content and perception regarding delivery and quality of diabetes self-management education at …

Impact Of Phosphorus Intake On Beef Heifer Growth Performance And Conception Rates, Hailey Hilfiker, Beth Kegley, Rick Rorie, Jeremy Powell
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
In Northwest Arkansas, soil phosphorus concentrations have increased where livestock manures have been repeatedly applied, leading many to question if supplementing phosphorus in this area is necessary. The effects of phosphorus intake on beef heifer growth performance and conception rates were investigated. In this study, crossbred Angus heifers (n = 72), approximately 30 days after weaning, were stratified by body weight (average initial weight 251 ± 3.9 kg) and allocated randomly into 8 groups. Groups were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 treatments. Treatments were delivered through either a free-choice-mineral mix that contained no supplemental phosphorus (CON), or a free-choice-mineral …
The Chemical Lives Of Young Filipinos, Gideon Lasco
The Chemical Lives Of Young Filipinos, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
Many young Filipinos are using a wide array of ‘chemicals’ that structure, and are structured by, their everyday lives. These chemicals - cosmetics, supplements, narcotics, beverages - range from local to foreign, cheap to expensive, licit to illicit; orally ingested to topically applied, and are used for different reasons in a variety of contexts. This chapter analyzes and seeks to make sense of the use of chemicals by young Filipinos.

Estimation And Clustering In Network And Indirect Data, Ramchandra Rimal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The first part of the dissertation studies a density deconvolution problem with small Berkson errors. In this setting, the data is not available directly but rather in the form of convolution and one needs to estimate the convolution of the unknown density with Berkson errors. While it is known that the Berkson errors improve the precision of the reconstruction, it does not necessarily happen when Berkson errors are small. Furthermore, the choice of bandwidth in density estimation has been an open problem so far. In this dissertation, we provide an in-depth study of the choice of the bandwidth which leads …
The Relationship Between Familism And Social Distancing Behaviors During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thien-An Le
The Relationship Between Familism And Social Distancing Behaviors During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thien-An Le
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Transmission of Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) occurs efficiently and from symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, therefore making it highly infectious. As such, social distancing is generally recommended to mitigate the speed of transmission and decrease incidence, hospitalization, and mortality rates. Consistent with other chronic medical conditions, COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Hispanic/Latinx and black populations. One inherent cultural concept, familism, might also serve to inhibit adherence to social distancing guidelines. Thus, the current study contributes to the growing literature on COVID-19, specifically examining barriers underscoring health disparities. This study evaluated Attitudinal Familism (AFS) and Behavioral Familism (BFS) as predictors of adherence of social …

Addressing Racial Disproportionality In The Juvenile Justice System: An Evaluation Of The King County Juvenile Court 180-Program, Stephanie Jones
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses
Restorative justice programs are frequently designed to divert youth from the criminal justice system and to decrease recidivism. In 2011, King County established a restorative justice program, the 180-program, to decrease new referrals and to decrease racial disproportionality in the juvenile court. While previous studies have found lower overall new referral rates for youth who completed the 180-program, gaps remain. The program has not been measured for likelihood of recidivism and completion rates based on race. The 180-program has been compared to other juvenile justice programs but has not been analyzed for its individual success and effectiveness. Informed by self-concept …

Family Preservation And Fatalities: The Effect Of Policy On Child Maltreatment Deaths, Madison N. Sundberg
Family Preservation And Fatalities: The Effect Of Policy On Child Maltreatment Deaths, Madison N. Sundberg
Master's Theses and Capstones
National estimates suggest that between 1,600 and 1,800 children are victims of CMFs each year (USDHHS, 2020), though it is believed that this number is an underestimation of the true figure (Douglas and Finkelhor, 2005; Yampolskaya, Greenbaum, and Berson, 2009). Two belief systems in protecting children have arisen over the past decades, influenced both by sensational cases of child abuse and research. One side argues that every effort must be made to keep the family intact: the family preservation approach. Alternatively, some argue that by attempting to preserve the family structure and failing to remove victims expeditiously, we leave children …
Developing Chenopodium Ficifolium As A Diploid Model System Relevant To Genetic Characterization And Improvement Of Allotetraploid C. Quinoa, Madhav Subedi
Master's Theses and Capstones
Quinoa, Chenopodium quinoa Willd., is a potential new high-value crop for Northern New England (NNE) because of its excellent nutritional qualities and its ability to grow in diverse agroecosystems. However, quinoa field trials have not been successful thus far in NNE because of some major issues such as downy mildew disease, severe lodging (bending over), excessive branching, overly long maturation time, and immature grains at harvest. Quinoa is an allotetraploid (2n=4x=36) species of genome composition AABB, and thus has two distinct diploid ancestors. This study reports foundational genetic studies in the BB diploid (2n=2x=18) ancestor, Chenopodium ficifolium, as a potential …

THE DEVELOPMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES RELEVANT TO THE GENETIC MANIPULATION OF DAY NEUTRAL FLOWERING HABIT IN STRAWBERRYBY
SAMIKSHYA RIJAL
University of New Hampshire, December 2020
Cultivated strawberry, Fragaria ×ananassa (Duch.) is an economically valued small fruit, well known for its nutritional benefits. For agricultural production, two types of strawberry cultivars are bred: Short Day (SD) varieties, which require specific day length to initiate flowering, and Day Neutral (DN) varieties, which are photoperiod insensitive. The DN trait confers continuous flowering and extended harvesting. Understanding the genetic determinants of this important trait in the octoploid/cultivated strawberry (2n = 8x = 56) …

The Social And Cultural Factors Of Anorexia Nervosa In Adolescent Women, Hannah Daddario
The Social And Cultural Factors Of Anorexia Nervosa In Adolescent Women, Hannah Daddario
Honors College Theses
Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder that typically begins in adolescence and it is characterized by three diagnostic criteria defined within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This criterion consists of the restriction of energy intake, leading to a significantly low body weight, the intense fear of weight gain, and the disturbed sense in which someone perceives their body weight or shape. Adolescence is characterized as the time in aperson’s life which is the period of growth between the ages of 10 and 19 years old. This period of development spans through many milestones, including puberty …
Fetal Equality, Shaakirrah R. Sanders
Fetal Equality, Shaakirrah R. Sanders
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
I join Carliss Chatman’s call to fully consider the equal protection implications of the conception theory and raise an additional right to which a fetus may be entitled as a matter of equal protection: health care, which implicates state laws that provide civil and criminal exemptions to parents who choose religious healing instead of medical care for their children and minor dependents. The evidence of harm to children from religious healing is well documented. Yet, currently, approximately forty-three U.S. states and the District of Columbia have some type of exemption to protect religious healing parents in civil and criminal cases. …
