Welcome To The World Of Tomorrow: An Exploration Of Cell-Based Meats And How The Fda And Usda May Protect Intellectual Property Rights, Sean A. Grafton

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

Lab-grown meats are ready to be sold in United States markets. However, the meat product needs approval from regulators such as the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) and the United States Department of Agriculture (“USDA”). The regulation approval process takes a significant amount of time. This approval period will cut into the lab-grown meat producers’ patent time, rendering a period of the patent ineffective.

This Comment analyzes the effect of, and possible changes to, our current laws on the emerging lab-grown meat market. To look at this problem, this Comment compares FDA and USDA regulations, analyzes the Hatch-Waxman Act, and …

Objective: To calculate daily sodium intake for cross country runners over three consecutive days of training and compare them to sweat sodium losses during the three training sessions. Design: Observational field study Participants: Ten athletes (age = 20.5 ± 1.51, height = 173.21 ± 12.66 cm, …

Re-Establishing The Value Of Family And Consumer Science In The General Middle School Curriculum, Cassidy Wallace Jan 2020

Re-Establishing The Value Of Family And Consumer Science In The General Middle School Curriculum, Cassidy Wallace

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Family and consumer science is a subject that carries a complex cultural legacy. Beginning as a response to the social upheaval of the industrial revolution, family and consumer started as home economics, and was split between elevating the importance of the domestic arts and applying science to traditionally domestic tasks to both improve homelife and create new fields of academic research. While second goal was reached, and we now have food science, sanitation engineering, and materials research, among others, family and consumer science is still often relegated to domestic associations. However, family and consumer science is still relevant and powerful …

P.E.A.R Participation, Education, Action, And Resources: Combating Food Insecurity Through Collaboration, Aileen Assumma

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Students have been negatively impacted socially, academically and personally through the inability to provide enough nutritious meals to fuel their bodies. The higher education public system should be seen as a collaborative effort to educate institution employees on the issue of food insecurity as the first step in combating food insecurity among their local community. Creating a group of Community Advocates made up of members across the community will provide the opportunity for institutions to examine the systemic barriers put in place within higher education systems that hinder student ability to have sufficient access to food sources. I will validate …

The Quest To Increase The Quality Of High Impact Practices: Supporting And Preparing Students For Internship Experiences, Leslie Mcgowan

West Chester University Master’s Theses

High Impact Practices include opportunities or experiences students participate in during the college career that can have a greater impact on learning and can increase student engagement and retention rates. The number of students participating in these practices is increasing and some institutions are requiring students to participate in a high impact practice as a requirement to graduation. For these practices to be meaningful experiences for students, they must be done well. Thoughtful planning, implementation, and evaluation are important components to increasing quality of these experiences. Internships, are just one of the many high impact practices that students can participate …

Rooting For Everybody Black: Exploring The Need For Mentorship For Black First-Generation Students At Predominantly White Institutions, Layshan Gilliard Jan 2020

Rooting For Everybody Black: Exploring The Need For Mentorship For Black First-Generation Students At Predominantly White Institutions, Layshan Gilliard

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This thesis addresses how mentorship can enhance the experience and success of Black first-generation college students at predominantly white institutions. More specifically, I explore why first-generation Black students need guided support that comes with mentorship, what that support should entail, and how and when it should be delivered to them. I used the methodology of critical action research to analyze the structures of power that affect the education received by these students, while also utilizing my personal experience. I propose a mentoring program that promotes Black excellence. The program, SOUL (Students Overcoming Uniting and Learning), will provide students with the …

Access And Utilization Of Prenatal Care In Florida And Its Effects On Preterm Birth, Corinne Audette Jan 2020

Access And Utilization Of Prenatal Care In Florida And Its Effects On Preterm Birth, Corinne Audette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Preterm birth in the United States is the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. The United States spends more per capita on healthcare than any other nation in the world, and still perinatal outcomes are disappointing when compared to other industrialized nations. Research and current clinical practice guidelines support the use of early and consistent prenatal care to lower risks for preterm birth, by acting as a key mechanism to monitor pregnancy and provide timely and appropriate interventions. Significant research has been completed to identify causative factors that lead to preterm birth. Overall, this literature has not had a …

Supporting Employee Lactation: Do U.S. Workplace Lactation Benefit Mandates Align With Evidence-Based Practice?, Candice L. Thomas, Lauren D. Murphy, Drake Van Egdom, Haley R. Cobb

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Within the United States, there are governmental benefits and policies in place to support breastfeeding mothers as they return to work. However, the effectiveness and inclusiveness of these policies is not always clear. Because of this, breastfeeding at work, in general, and governmental workplace mandates, specifically, often receive negative press and social media attention as women struggle to reconcile their workplace and lactation demands. To provide evidence-based recommendations for how to best support breastfeeding employees, we use an organizational science perspective to review the existing research for evidence on the (1) effectiveness of the existing legal benefits and supports within …

Costs Vs. Compensation: Legal And Policy Recommendations For Addressing Workplace Sexual Harassment, Heather Mclaughlin, Christine Thomas

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The recent #MeToo Movement has unequivocally shown that workplace sexual harassment is a widespread issue. Since December 2017, workers around the globe have shared personal stories of sexual harassment, as well as the tolls it caused on their health and careers. In this Article, we review extant interdisciplinary research on the negative consequences of sexual harassment for workers’ physical, psychological, and behavioral health; their career and earnings trajectories; and for broader organizational culture. Understanding these costs sheds light on how best to reduce and respond to workplace sexual harassment. We offer three suggestions for law and policy: (1) expand legal …

Climate Change, Coming Soon To A Court Near You – Report Four: International Climate Change Legal Frameworks, Maria Cecilia T. Sicango Jan 2020

Climate Change, Coming Soon To A Court Near You – Report Four: International Climate Change Legal Frameworks, Maria Cecilia T. Sicango

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

In 2020, the Paris Agreement is the pinnacle of international law on climate change. It orchestrates global climate action over the coming decades. Countries agreed to limit global warming to well below 2ºC above preindustrial times, closer to 1.5ºC. Humankind will only achieve this temperature goal if we domesticate our international climate commitments. Judges have proven to be instrumental in holding their governments accountable for their climate pledges. Report Four of this four-part series explores the nature of the Paris Agreement, its history, and the framework of international instruments and international legal principles that support global and domestic climate action.

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Climate change in Asia and the Pacific is deadly and impacts communities now. Regional climate litigation seeks relief in increasingly urgent ways and judges need a tool kit to respond. Report Two of this four-part series is a comprehensive review of the growing number and variety of climate lawsuits in Asia and the Pacific. It underscores the unique flavor and voice of regional jurisprudence and compares it with global approaches. No one can solve climate change alone and neither can any particular judiciary. Judges can, however, learn from each other, taking judicial excellence and applying it to the case before …

An Implementation Of Embedded Software For Real Time Monitoring Of Bioimpedance, Amirahmad Ramezani Jan 2020

An Implementation Of Embedded Software For Real Time Monitoring Of Bioimpedance, Amirahmad Ramezani

Theses

Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a convenient and highly accurate method for assessment of the internal composition of the body. It can be particularly used for evaluating the hydration level of an individual based on the amount of intracellular water (ICW) and extracellular water (ECW) in total body water (TBW). Complex impedance of the body is a function of frequency and amount of ICW and ECW. By injecting small currents at different frequency and measurement of complex impedance, we can assess the amount of ICW, ECW, and TBW. This method can be applied to Internet of Things (IoT), fitness, and clinical …

Education Is Your Most Powerful Weapon: Gaining Understanding From Apsáalooke Knowledge, Salena Ann Beaumont Hill

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

American Indian college students have many motivating factors for pursuing a higher education. One common theme among American Indian college students is the motivation to give back to their tribal nation. This study explores the expectations of the Apsáalooke (Crow) Nation for college students returning home. An Indigenous Research Methodology with Apsáalooke epistemology is used. Along with tribal practices and protocols, situational analysis was adapted to align with the methodology. The findings include four major elements informing Apsáalooke expectations of returning students: culture and identity, the college student experience, the realities of returning home, and expectations of Apsáalooke students who …

The Nmda Receptor Coagonists L-Glutamate And D-Serine, Denis Mikhailovich Shchepakin Jan 2020

The Nmda Receptor Coagonists L-Glutamate And D-Serine, Denis Mikhailovich Shchepakin

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Glutamate is the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Glutamate release and reuptake control both tonic activation of glutamate receptors and phasic signaling during synaptic transmission. Here we study different aspects of the system. The first three chapters focus on the most abundant glutamate transporters found in the brain, excitatory amino acid transporters 1-3 (EAAT1- 3/SLC1A3,2,1). The last chapter is devoted to a paralogous neutral amino acid transporter (ASCT1/SLC1A4) and its role in transport of D-serine, a coagonist of the N-methyl-Daspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor.

In the first chapter, we discuss the existing discrepancy in estimates of EAAT1-3 …

A Snapshot Of Care: Creating Models Of Care For Individuals Included In The Terry Collection, Felicia Robyn Sparozic

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Utilizing the bioarchaeology of care model, this research formulates a model of care based on ethnohistorical and skeletal markers of pathologic conditions. The index of care is the method used to create models of care, and this requires social, cultural, economic, environmental, and mortuary contexts to determine the resources required to aid a person through injury or disability. This paper investigates the impact of known medical, occupational, and morgue records that accompanied each selected individual in the skeletal collection. This additional information, beyond what is gained from skeletal analysis, generates a complex model of care. A more complex model of …
