Subsidised By Junk Foods: Factors Influencing Body Condition In Stray Cats (Felis Catus), H. M. Crawford, M. C. Calver, P. A. Fleming
Predation and Wildlife
Domestic cats (Felis catus) are one of the most widely distributed and successful carnivores globally. While cats are popular pets, many unowned, ‘stray’ cats live freely in anthropogenic environments at high densities where they make use of anthropogenic resources. These stray cats present a management challenge due to concerns about wildlife predation, pathogen transmission, public nuisance and threats to cat welfare (e.g. vehicle collisions). In Australia, there are few studies
of strays compared with pet cats or feral cats (free-roaming cats in rural areas that are independent of resources provided
by humans). To contribute original data about stray cat biology, …

Body Size And Bite Force Of Stray And Feral Cats - Are Bigger Or Older Cats Taking The Largest Or More Difficult To Handle Prey, Patricia A. Fleming, Heather M. Crawford, Clare H. Auckland, Michael C. Calver
Predation and Wildlife
As carnivorans rely heavily on their head and jaws for prey capture and handling, skull morphology and bite force can therefore reflect their ability to take larger or more difficult-to-handle prey. For 568 feral and stray cats (Felis catus), we recorded their demographics (sex and age), source location (feral or stray) and morphological measures (body mass, body condition); we estimated potential bite force from skull measurements for n = 268 of these cats, and quantified diet composition from stomach contents for n = 358. We compared skull measurements to estimate their bite force and determine how it varied with sex, …

A Ten-Stage Protocol For Assessing The Welfare Of Individual Non-Captive Wild Animals: Free Roaming Horses Equus Ferus Caballus) As An Example, David James Mellor
General - Animal Welfare
Knowledge of the welfare status of wild animals is vital for informing debates about the ways in which we interact with wild animals and their habitats. Currently, there is no published information about how to scientifically assess the welfare of free-roaming wild animals during their normal day-to-day lives. Using free-roaming horses as an example, we describe a ten-stage protocol for systematically and scientifically assessing the welfare of individual non-captive wild animals. The protocol starts by emphasizing the importance of readers having an understanding of animal welfare in a conservation context and also of the Five Domains Model for assessing welfare. …

The 2020 Five Domains Model: Including Human-Animal Interactions In Assessments Of Animal Welfare, David J. Mellor, Ngaio J. Beausoleil, Katherine E. Littlewood, Andrew N. Mclean, Paul D. Mcgreery, Bidda Jones, Christina Williams
General - Animal Welfare
Throughout its 25-year history, the Five Domains Model for animal welfare assessment has been regularly updated to include at each stage the latest authenticated developments in animal welfare science thinking. The domains of the most up-to-date Model described here are: 1 Nutrition, 2 Physical Environment, 3 Health, 4 Behavioural Interactions and 5 Mental State. The first four domains focus attention on factors that give rise to specific negative or positive subjective experiences (affects), which contribute to the animal’s mental state, as evaluated in Domain 5. More specifically, the first three domains focus mainly on factors that disturb or disrupt particular …

Background Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are in dire need to improve their health outcomes. Although Global Health Capacity Building (GHCB) initiatives are recommended approaches, they risk being ineffective in the absence of standardized evaluation methods. This study systematically reviews evaluation approaches for GHCB initiatives in LMICs. Methods We searched the Medline (OVID), PubMed, Scopus, and Embase.com databases for studies reporting evaluation of a GHCB initiative in a LMIC from January 1, 2009 until August 15, 2019. To differentiate them from intervention, prevention, and awareness initiatives, included articles reported at least one approach to evaluate their learning modality. We excluded …

Work-Life Balance In Professional Dance, Rhenna C. Fontenot, Adoree E. Mcraney, Olivia T. Larkins, Jeremy J. Foreman
Global Sport Business Journal
Dancers are susceptible to overtraining caused by work demands, leading to both mental and physiological burn out. The purpose of this research is to formulate an overtraining prevention plan for dancers through the use of periodization models and work-life balance programs. The work-life balance benefits within similarly demanding organizations as well as work-life benefit exemplar organizations were analyzed and used to evaluate how similar programming could be implemented for professional dancers. Respite, disability/illness, educational/career transition, disaster/emergency relief, parental, and counseling/healthcare policies and benefits were examined. The results of this comprehensive examination revealed several policies that could be implemented for dancers.

Understanding Striga Occurrence And Risk Under Changing Climatic Conditions Across Different Agroecological Farming Systems At Local And Regional Scales, Bester Tawona Mudereri
All PhD Dissertations
The invasion by Striga in most cereal crop fields in Africa has posed an acute threat to food security and socioeconomic integrity. Consequently, numerous technological and research developments have been made to minimize and even control the Striga impacts on crop production. So far, efforts to control Striga have primarily focused on the manipulation of the genetics of the host crops, as well as understanding the phenological and physiological traits, along with the chemical composition of the weed. These initiatives have immensely contributed to the management of Striga across the continents. However, on-farm Striga control technologies require spatial explicit locational …

Background:Vector-borne pathogens (VBP) present a seriousthreat to both animal and humanhealth globally due to their zoonotic potential.'One Health' epidemio-surveillance systems that integrate human, animal, and arthropod vector facetsof VBP transmission enhance detection and can give rise to informed effective multi-sectoral vector-borne disease control options. The most important vectors are ticks and mosquitoes, which have a cosmopolitan distribution due to their ecological plasticity. Collectively, they transmit viral, bacterial, and protozoal pathogensin sub-Saharan Africa. The distributional ranges ofVBP areexpected to expand due to increased globaltravel and trade in goods and livestock. Arboviruses, such as Rift Valley fever (RVF), chikungunya, dengue, and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever …

Effects Of Inorganic Fertilizer On Tomato - Bacterial Wilt Interactions In High Tunnel Tomato Varieties, Davis Fundi Ireri
All Master’s Theses
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L), is one of the most common and important vegetable crops in the world with over 18,477 hectares under tomato production in Kenya. Tomato production is however, greatly threatened by bacterial wilt (BW). Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a serious disease in the tropics and subtropics, causing severe losses in many agricultural crops. To control its infection, several measures have been deployed but with minimum success. Alternative integrated strategies are therefore needed for the management of this pathogen. This study sought to test the hypothesis that particular rates of inorganic fertilizers influence certain secondary metabolites …

Hungry Cities Partnership
After decades of famine and thousands of deaths caused by food shortages and starvation, China was able to achieve food security for the majority of its population through ensuring food availability. Despite this, during COVID-19, the government needed to heighten their responses to ensure food security and faced several challenges in doing so. This paper analyzes Chinese policies around food security during COVID-19 in two cities: Wuhan and Nanjing. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s definition of food security and the four pillars it identifies (availability, access, utilization, and stability) are used to provide a framework for this analysis. …

Energy Compensation With Exercise Is Not Dependent On Dose, H. Michael Hays
Energy Compensation With Exercise Is Not Dependent On Dose, H. Michael Hays
Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems
Background: Exercise induced weight loss is often less than expected due to a coordinated set of compensatory mechanisms that serve to maintain energy homeostasis. The extent to which exercise frequency, duration, intensity and exercise energy expenditure (ExEE) influences the compensatory response to an exercise-induced energy deficit (energy compensation) is controversial. Determining how these variables impact energy compensation would help health care providers prescribe exercise with greater probability of creating a sustained negative energy balance and subsequent weight loss.
Methods: 44 Overweight/obese men and women (BMI=25-35kg/m²) aged 18 to 40 years were randomized to perform aerobic exercise 2 or 6 days/week …
