Dark Night: Weaning From One’S Image Of God: Toward Spiritual Maturity, Michael C. Porcia
Dark Night: Weaning From One’S Image Of God: Toward Spiritual Maturity, Michael C. Porcia
Landas
Drawing from St. John of the Cross’s Dark Night of the Soul, this essay explores the spiritual transition of the soul through the maternal image of God. Initially, God nurtures the fragile soul with the passive dependence, warmth, and sweetness a mother provides an infant. However, spiritual maturity requires a process of weaning, moving beyond infantile imagery to find independence within a profound divine bond. This painful transition—likened to a mother applying bitter aloes—constitutes the dark night experience. Ultimately, the soul embraces a scriptural image of God as the ultimate Other, fostering freedom, responsibility, and mature intimacy.

Digital Technologies In Nursing And Midwifery Education In Ghana: Educators Perspective, Practice And Barriers, Harry Barton Essel, Theodore Awuni, Shamsudeen Mohammed
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study assessed the perspective, practice and barrier that mitigate the integration of Information and Communication Technologies into nursing and midwifery education in Ghana. With purposive and convenience sampling techniques, a sample size of 108 health tutors was involved in the study. The findings revealed that most of the health tutors utilised information and communication technologies in the presentation of lessons to students and the management of examination results. Social media platforms, productivity tools and E-books were the most used technologies among health tutors. Barriers identified related to unavailability of task-appropriate ICT resources, and inadequate training for teachers to use …

Predicting Livestock Depredation Risk By African Lions (Panthera Leo) In A Multi-Use Area Of Northern Tanzania, K. Beattie, E. R. Olson, B. Kissui, A. Kirschbaum, C. Kiffner
United States National Park Service: Publications
Human-wildlife conflicts, especially those involving large carnivores, are of global conservation and livelihood concern and require effective and locally-adapted prevention measures. Risk of lion attack on livestock (i.e. depredation) may vary seasonally and may be associated with variation in wild prey abundance or landscape characteristics. To test these competing hypotheses, we used a resource selection approach, and determined whether prey catchability (indicated by geo-spatial variables), or prey availability (indicated by modeled abundance recorded via camera traps) explained spatial and seasonal variation in livestock depredation risk by African lions on Manyara Ranch Conservancy, a multi-use area in northern Tanzania. Seasonal variation …

An understudied aspect of climate change-induced phenological mismatch is its effect on ecosystem functioning, such as nitrogen (N) cycling. Migratory herbivore arrival time may alter N inputs and plant–herbivore feedbacks, whereas earlier springs are predicted to increase N cycling rates through warmer temperatures. However, the relative importance of these shifts in timing and how they interact to affect N cycling are largely unknown. We conducted a 3-year factorial experiment in coastal western Alaska that simulated different timings of Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) arrival (3 weeks early, typical, 3 weeks late, or no-grazing) and the growing season …

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Background
The Striving to be Strong study tested the efficacy of a multifaceted, theory-based, complex osteoporosis prevention smartphone application (app). We hypothesized use of the app would improve bone mineral density and trabecular bone scores.
Methods
The study was a three-group, prospective, repeated-measure, longitudinal randomized trial. Baseline sample consisted of 290 healthy women between 40 and 60 years of age. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: “Striving,” a dynamically tailored, person-centered app; “Boning Up,” a standardized osteoporosis-education e-book; and “Wait List,” a participant’s choice of intervention in the final 3 months of the 12-month study. Participants had …

School of Medicine Publications
Background: The specificity and sensitivity of the (1 3)-b-d-glucan (BDG) assay in surgical patients needs further investigation. We hypothesized that the BDG assay would have lower sensitivity/specificity compared with that of medical patients.
Methods: We reviewed patients who had undergone laparotomy, gastrectomy, hepatectomy, or colectomy and had a BDG assay post-operatively.
Results: A total of 71 patients met study criteria. There were 29 (40.8%) who had proven/probable invasive fungal infection. Sensitivity for BDG level ‡80 diagnosed within one week of the assay draw was 77.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 54.6–92.2%), and specificity was 44.9% (95% CI, 30.7–59.8). The positive predictive …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(1): 1-5, 2020. Statistical reporting of quantitative research data has been plagued by potential bias and reporting suppression due to a single numerical output: the p-value. While there is great importance in its merit, creating a pass-fail system (set at point of .05) has created a culture of researchers submitting their project’s data to a filing cabinet if it does not yield “statistical significance” based on this value. The editors of the International Journal of Exercise Science are following the American Statistical Association’s call for statistical reform by adjusting our reporting guidelines to the …

The root nodules are a unique environment formed on legume roots through a highly specific symbiotic relationship between leguminous plants and nodule-inducing bacteria. Previously, Rhizobia were presumed to be the only group of bacteria residing within nodules. However, recent studies discovered diverse groups of bacteria within the legume nodules. In this report soybean nodule-associated bacteria were studied in an effort to identify beneficial bacteria for plant disease control and growth promotion. Analysis of surface-sterilized single nodules showed bacterial diversity of the nodule microbiome. Five hundred non-rhizobial colonies from 10 nodules, 50 colonies per nodule, were tested individually against the tomato …

Cataracts, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide, refers to lens degradation that is characterized by clouding, with consequent blurry vision. As life expectancies improve, the number of people affected with cataracts is predicted to increase worldwide, especially in low-income nations with limited access to surgery. Although cataract surgery is considered safe, it is associated with some complications such as retinal detachment, warranting a search for cheap, pharmacological alternatives to the management of this ocular disease. The lens is richly endowed with a complex system of non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants which scavenge reactive oxygen species to preserve lens …

How Well Is Urban Agriculture Growing In The Southern United States? Trends And Issues From The Perspective Of Urban Planners Regulating Urban Agriculture, Russell J. Fricano, Carla Davis
Urban and Regional Studies Institute Publications
In this study, we evaluate urban agriculture trends in 55 cities in the Southern United States. Our research is important for three reasons. First, as the geographic scope of urban agriculture research is limited mostly to Northeast and West Coast cities, we focus on the South, the fastest-growing U.S. Census region. Second, despite rapid growth, this region has also experienced the highest rate of poverty and food insecurity. Third, we surveyed urban planners who regulate and monitor urban agriculture sites, develop urban agriculture policies and programs, and advise local decision-makers. The study documents Southern urban agriculture changes between 2000 and …

Optfill: A Tool For Infeasible Cycle-Free Gapfilling Of Stoichiometric Metabolic Models, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Rajib Saha
Optfill: A Tool For Infeasible Cycle-Free Gapfilling Of Stoichiometric Metabolic Models, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Rajib Saha
Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs
Stoichiometric metabolic modeling, particularly genome-scale models (GSMs), is now an indispens- able tool for systems biology. The model reconstruction process typically involves collecting informa- tion from public databases; however, incomplete systems knowledge leaves gaps in any reconstruc- tion. Current tools for addressing gaps use databases of biochemical functionalities to address gaps on a per-metabolite basis and can provide multiple solutions but cannot avoid thermodynami- cally infeasible cycles (TICs), invariably requiring lengthy manual curation. To address these limita- tions, this work introduces an optimization-based multi-step method named OptFill, which performs TIC-avoiding whole-model gapfilling. We applied OptFill to three fictional prokaryotic models …
