Study On The Uniformity Of Frozen Beef With Various Sizes And Shapes Thawed By Radio Frequency, He Jia-Ling, Chen Lu, Zhang Ru-Yi, Zhu Ya-Li, Li Feng, Jiao Yang
Food and Machinery
To investigate the effects of geometric parameters on uniformity of frozen beef thawed by radio frequency (RF), frozen beef samples with 8 different shapes, thickness, bottom areas and placements were thawed in a RF oven (40.68 MHz) respectively for determining the thawing uniformity. Meanwhile, a computer model was established and utilized to predict the thawing rate and temperature distribution of the samples. The predicted temperature distribution showed a good agreement with the experimental results. The general thawing rates of all beef samples are constant and then decreased gradually as reaching the phase change temperature zone. Samples with larger thickness showed …

Lifespan Of Long-Lived Growth Hormone Receptor Knockout Mice Was Not Normalized By Housing At 30°C Since Weaning, Yimin Fang, Samuel Mcfadden, Justin Darcy, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin Hascup, Andrzej Bartke
Articles
Growth hormone receptor knockout (GHRKO) mice are remarkably long-lived and have improved glucose homeostasis along with altered energy metabolism which manifests through decreased respiratory quotient (RQ) and increased oxygen consumption (VO2 ). Short-term exposure of these animals to increased environmental temperature (eT) at 30°C can normalize their VO2 and RQ. We hypothesized that increased heat loss in the diminutive GHRKO mice housed at 23°C and the consequent metabolic adjustments to meet the increased energy demand for thermogenesis may promote extension of longevity, and preventing these adjustments by chronic exposure to increased eT will reduce or eliminate their longevity …

The Effects Of Temperature And Precipitation On Growth In Beef Cattle For The Southern Illinois Region, Cameron Helderman
The Effects Of Temperature And Precipitation On Growth In Beef Cattle For The Southern Illinois Region, Cameron Helderman
Research Papers
The demand for beef around the United States has been growing exponentially over the years because of our growing population. This means that producers must maximize the growth and development of their cattle and herds in total so that they can meet that growing demand. Many factors come into consideration when making decisions on increasing the turnover rate on the farm, but one of those big decisions is weather, especially temperature and precipitation. These two variables can have a direct effect on the growth and development of cattle. If conditions are harsh, their feed intake could decrease because of sickness, …

Gynandromorphy is an anomaly that results in an organism phenotypically expressing both male and female characteristics. Here we describe the first gynandromorph of the bee species Megalopta amoena (Spinola, 1853) (Halictidae, Augochlorini) and the second record of this anomaly within the genus Megalopta. Additionally, we analyzed the bee’s circadian rhythm, which has never before been quantified for a gynandromorph. The gynandromorph showed a deviant activity pattern; it was intermediate between that of the male and female M. amoena. Our results imply that the brains of bilateral gynandromorphs may have mixed sex-specific signaling. Based on four days of recording, …

Background: Non-invasive biomarkers can facilitate health assessments in wild primate populations by reducing the need for direct access to animals. Neopterin is a biomarker that is a product of the cell-mediated immune response, with high levels being indicative of poor survival expectations in some cases. The measurement of urinary neopterin concentration (UNC) has been validated as a method for monitoring cell-mediated immune system activation in multiple catarrhine species, but to date there is no study testing its utility in the urine of platyrrhine species. In this study, we collected urine samples across three platyrrhine families including small captive populations of …

Articles
A mixed-methodology study was conducted to better understand consumer attitudes and behaviors toward novel food pairings and the impact of culinary education. Focus groups were conducted to investigate the underlying motivational factors to the reactions and behaviors toward unfamiliar foods. The second phase of the study consisted of sensory evaluation by two separate cohorts, panelists with and without culinary education, of food products created through the novel pairings of foods. Panelists with culinary education expressed a greater overall liking for the animal-based pairing. Sensory-Affective and Ideational factors appeared to be underlying motivational factors of these hedonic reactions.

Animal models of chronic disease are continuously being refined and have evolved with the goal of increasing the translation of results to human populations. Examples of this progress include transgenic models and germ-free animals conventionalized with human microbiota. The gut microbiome is involved in the etiology of several chronic diseases. Therefore, consideration of the experimental conditions that may affect the gut microbiome in preclinical disease is very important. Of note, diet plays a large role in shaping the gut microbiome and can be a source of variation between animal models and human populations. Traditionally, nutrition researchers have focused on manipulating …
