Association Of Maternal History Of Neonatal Death With Subsequent Neonatal Death In India, Mudit Kapoor, Rockli Kim, Tanushree Sahoo, Ambuj Roy, Shamika Ravi, A. K.Shiva Kumar, Ramesh Agarwal, S. V. Subramanian
Journal Articles
Importance: Among the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals is to reduce the neonatal mortality rate to 12 per 1000 live births by 2030. Identifying high-risk pregnancies can help achieve this target in low-resource countries, such as India, which accounts for one-fourth of global neonatal deaths. Objective: To analyze the association of maternal history of neonatal death with subsequent neonatal mortality. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study included a nationally representative sample of singleton live births from multiparous women. Data were obtained from the 2016 National Family Health Survey in India. Data were analyzed from November 2018 to January 2020. …

Learning Lean To Lead, Krystle Irene Guenther
Doctoral Projects
This project sought to see if training frontline nurses and physicians together in Lean methodology improved collaboration between the two disciplines while giving them the tools they need to lead change at the bedside and in their practice. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention methodology was used. The intervention was six, four-hour in-person modules on performance improvement (PI). Respondents completed two surveys, the performance improvement instrument and the Professional Practice Environment Assessment Scale (PPEAS). Surveys were paired for analysis. There was a statistically significant median increase in participants confidence for all questions on the PI instrument post-intervention. Results for the PPEAS …

Paying For Free Lunch: The Impact Of Cep Universal Free Meals On Revenues, Spending, And Student Health, Michah W. Rothbart, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Emily Gutierrez
Center for Policy Research
The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 allows school districts to provide free meals to all students if more than 40 percent of students are individually eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. While emerging evidence documents positive effects on student behavior and academics (Gordon and Ruffini, 2019; Schwartz and Rothbart, 2020), critics worry that Universal Free Meals (UFM) has unintended consequences, including exacerbating student obesity and adding financial burden onto school districts. We use school and district level data from New York State (NYS) and a difference-in-differences design to test whether concerns over negative …
Perceptions Of Healthcare And Medicine In Yogyakarta In Comparison To Providence, Lynnea Talbot
Perceptions Of Healthcare And Medicine In Yogyakarta In Comparison To Providence, Lynnea Talbot
Senior Honors Projects
The way in which medicine is practiced and perceived varies across the world and is influenced by history. After a trip to Indonesia, and experiencing the local health centers first-hand, the differences in medical practices became evident. A comparison between the cities of Yogyakarta and Providence was performed with respect to different areas of medicine. The life expectancy values for the city of Providence were significantly higher than those for Yogyakarta. The top ten causes of death were examined for both cities: the number one cause being stroke in Yogyakarta and heart disease in Providence. Medical facilities and personnel, insurance …
Calf Heath And Oxidative Stress, Samantha Cardin
Calf Heath And Oxidative Stress, Samantha Cardin
Senior Honors Projects
In recent years, beef cattle operations such as farms and ranches in the U.S. have surpassed 900,000 and have been steadily increasing. With this rise in the beef industry, comes a greater concern for calf health since it has huge impacts on production and viability. There are multiple different factors that can affect calf health ranging from the intrauterine environment to conditions early on post parturition. An improper maternal environment during pregnancy can impact fetal growth because it can decrease the amount of nutrients reaching the calf. This can lead to low birth weights and undeveloped organ systems. Additionally, if …

An Exploration Of Preschool Choice With Low-Income Families: The Critical Role Of Positive Attitudes, Behavioral Norms And Control Beliefs, Laurel E. Schmitt
Dissertations
Since the 1960s preschool has been seen as a potential equalizer for children of poverty as they enter kindergarten and long term studies of state and federal preschools have documented positive impacts, especially for low-income students. What has yet to be deeply explored is guardians’ decision-making processes to explain the lack of enrollment even when the stated barriers are eliminated (Obi, 2011; Payne, 1994; Swartz, 1996).
The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe and interpret, through a phenomenological lens, how low income parents and guardians made decisions to enroll their child or dependent in a preschool program. I …
Scoliosis And Its Treatment In Adults, Hilary Skalski
Scoliosis And Its Treatment In Adults, Hilary Skalski
Student Scholars Day Posters
Scoliosis is a greater than ten-degree curve in the spine in the coronal plane. There are many types of scoliosis, with the most common being adolescent idiopathic. The most common type in adults is degenerative scoliosis, caused by the wear and tear of the spine. In adults, treatment options are selected based on symptoms caused by the curvature. Treatments include lifestyle changes, medications, physical therapy and surgery. Two common surgical treatments are a laminectomy for decompression or a spinal fusion. The dissection of a 92-year-old male cadaver revealed scoliosis of lumbar vertebrae one through five (L1-5). A post-mortem laminectomy then …
Impact Of Cell Density On Cx43 Expression In Endothelial Cells, Madison Goen, Kyle Morrison
Impact Of Cell Density On Cx43 Expression In Endothelial Cells, Madison Goen, Kyle Morrison
Student Scholars Day Posters
Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids benefits the cardiovascular system by reducing blood vessel inflammatory responses. Our recent work showed omega-3 fatty acids decrease connexin 43 (Cx43) expression in cultured endothelial cells after 1 day. Our interest in Cx43 was as marker of inflammation as omega-3 fatty acids are strongly implicated as anti-inflammatory agents. Localized inflammatory responses drive the growth of the atherosclerotic plaques responsible for a majority of cardiovascular diseases. Anything that affects the inflammatory response will affect the growth (and stability which is also important) of those plaques. This poster will summarize current knowledge of atherosclerosis and inflammation as …

A Literature Review On Intermittent Fasting, Kylie Carrero
A Literature Review On Intermittent Fasting, Kylie Carrero
Senior Honors Theses
Intermittent fasting has been instructed in the Bible as an implied part of daily living. This paper has reviewed the physical benefits of intermittent fasting. In healthy test subjects, it has led to higher levels of autophagy, gut health, and lifespan. In non-healthy test subjects, it has proven beneficial in cancer treatment, as well as in protection against and/or attenuation of the effects of neurodegeneration, metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. The possible mechanisms underlying these benefits have been discussed in this review.

Granulomas are described very rarely in marrow biopsies. They have hardly been reported in association with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. We herein report two cases of ALL associated with granulomas each at different stage of their clinical course that led to a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma. First case was of a 42-year-old woman diagnosed with tuberculosis who presented with bleeding gums during anti-tubercular therapy. In the second scenario, a 51-year-old man presented with pyrexia of unknown origin and splenomegaly who was put on a trial of ATT. Peripheral smear showed only 1-2% abnormal cells, however, bone marrow aspiration and flow cytometry …

Open Access archive
Background: Perioperative anxiety, hunger, thirst, fatigue, pain along with nausea and vomiting can influence a patient's recovery after surgery. We aimed to compare 'enhanced recovery after surgery' (ERAS) protocol with a traditional perioperative approach to evaluate a patient's recovery after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods: A prospective randomised controlled study was conducted after institutional ethical clearance on 50 patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and divided equally into two groups. In group 1 (traditional); standard fasting guidelines and routine perioperative management was implemented. In group 2 (ERAS); patients received appropriate multimedia information about surgery and anaesthesia besidecarbohydrate loading with tender coconut water …

Teachers' Impact On Psychosocial Treatment For Latino Youth With Adhd, Margaret Anne Grace
Dissertations (1934 -)
The current study examined the impact of teacher engagement in psychosocial treatment for Latino youth with ADHD and their families. Participants included sixty-one Latino youth, along with their primary caregiver and teacher. Results revealed that teachers were equally engaged in treatment regardless of the source of the referral to treatment, a finding which is encouraging as it indicates that teachers were motivated to work with their students and families. Additionally, results indicated that referral source and specific aspects of teacher engagement in treatment were related to certain child and parent/family treatment outcomes. Of note, several aspects of teacher engagement in …

The sample was made up of high school adolescents from an eastern province of China (N = 1338). The participants completed a self-reported survey on demographic variables and weekly health behaviors including physical activity, screen-time, and sleep duration. A frequency analysis was conducted to summarize the number of 24-h …
The Effects Of Resistance Deception On Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, And Perceived Exertion, Broderick L. Dickerson
The Effects Of Resistance Deception On Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, And Perceived Exertion, Broderick L. Dickerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Resistance deception during training is a lightly researched topic and is seen as a modification that can potentially act on central control during exercise. Studies that have observed effects of deception while training have yielded mixed results. The effects of deception on strength, muscular endurance, and perceived exertion and the mechanisms of action that may elicit changes are still unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the effects of resistance deception on muscular strength, muscular endurance, and perceived exertion in a trained population. Eight participants finished the study and underwent four trials, one of which was a …

The Impacts Of Large Carnivores On Human Livelihood: The Illusion Of Carnivore Conflict, Costs Of Coexistence, And Strategies For Mitigation, Elisabeth Russell
The Impacts Of Large Carnivores On Human Livelihood: The Illusion Of Carnivore Conflict, Costs Of Coexistence, And Strategies For Mitigation, Elisabeth Russell
Senior Honors Theses
Incidents of what is commonly referred to as human-carnivore conflict (HCC) are increasing. Examples include livestock depredation and carnivores attacking humans. Since HCC occurs most frequently where humans and carnivores commonly inter-mix – near the periphery of human habitations – habitat loss and fragmentation may contribute to the rise of HCC, amongst other factors. Although HCC cannot be eliminated, it can be reduced by well-planned and implemented strategies. These strategies must approach the conflict holistically and address both the animal and the human sides of the problem. Since humans rely on the healthy functioning of the ecosystem for survival, implementing …

Shifting Landscapes: The Effects Of Male Out-Migration On Food Security And Food Sovereignty In Rural Nepal, Emma Brown
Shifting Landscapes: The Effects Of Male Out-Migration On Food Security And Food Sovereignty In Rural Nepal, Emma Brown
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Rural Nepal is experiencing rapid demographic changes, significantly impacting the socioeconomic and agricultural landscape of these areas. Growing percentages of the male population are migrating out of the country in search of better livelihood opportunities. This is largely a result of poor development processes and governmental policies that have failed to create adequate domestic livelihood opportunities and incentives to work in agriculture, as well as changing ideas on what it means to be successful, spurred by globalization. Further, dominant neoliberal ideology and the commercialization of agriculture is decreasing the profitability of agriculture, making migration a lucrative option. Due to out-migration, …
The Political Development Of Capital Punishment In The Modern Moroccan State, Mia Barr
The Political Development Of Capital Punishment In The Modern Moroccan State, Mia Barr
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The modern Moroccan state seen today is very young. Having only been independent from France since 1956, the country has spent the last sixty-four years crafting its post-colonial statehood. What has emerged is a hybrid political system with powers split, however unequally, between the King and his inner circle, known as the makhzen, and the Parliament. Not only is the monarchy constitutional—meaning that its legitimacy is literally written into the primary governing document of Morocco, which had its last referendum in 2011—but it is also self-sustaining and self-legitimizing, for the monarchy uses its constitutional powers to grant itself further powers …
Plant Medicine: The Use Of Medicinal Plants As Green Manures In The Treatment Of Streptomyces Scabies Infection And Potato Scab Disease, Ben Bolcer
All NMU Master's Theses
Potato scab disease is caused by the pathogen Streptomyces scabies and leads to significant crop losses annually worldwide. There is growing public and scientific concern regarding the human and environmental safety with the use of many pesticides and current disease control measures. In lieu of this, the use of medicinal plant species as organic green manure treatments against potato scab disease was evaluated in field studies. Green manure applications of calendula (Calendula officinalis resina) and comfrey (Symphytum officinale) simultaneous to potato (Solanum tuberosum) planting in field studies were evaluated for scab reduction qualities. Treatments …
