Microgravity Emergency Medical Containment System – A Concept Of Architecture, Prototyping, And Usability Research, Keith Elliott Crisman

Theses and Dissertations

Exploration is intrinsic to human nature but is well understood to be accompanied by inherent risks to the explorer. This is particularly evident in the exploration of extreme environments such as long-duration space habitation; in which risk is increased due in particular to the distance from assistance, services, and replenishment of consumables. One of the major risks to extreme environment survivability is lack of access to emergency medical care. This risk is further amplified in the microgravity environment where terrestrial non-life-threatening conditions can become life threatening due to lack of next-level-care capabilities. The question posed within this research asks, ‘What …

Improving Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In The Older Adult Population Utilizing Shared Medical Appointments In Primary Care Setting, Mailo Brantner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The overall management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its comorbidities is complex and costly. The American Diabetes Association (ADA, 2019c) recommends the use of team-based care and self-management tools to optimize the management of T2DM. Unfortunately, there is a national shortage of endocrinologists and certified diabetes educators (Stewart, 2008) along with a primary care provider shortage (Simmons & Kapustin, 2011). Thus, it is essential to implement a care model to increase efficiency while also promoting patient knowledge and self-management of T2DM to improve health outcomes. An example of an innovative care model is the shared medical appointment (SMA), …

Rapid Detection Of Toxin-Producing Cyanobacteria, Timothy Alba

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Lake Mead provides drinking water to millions of people in Nevada, California, and Arizona. In 2015, the Southern Nevada Water Authority detected the cyanobacteria-produced toxin microcystin in the lake for the very first time. This toxin is lethal in large doses, and in small doses it causes a myriad of serious health effects. Detecting microcystin directly is a time-consuming and expensive process that requires liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry or immunological analyses, which require a full day or more to process samples. In order to provide water managers with the methodology for a toxin monitoring plan, this work developed a …

The Significance Of Mfd And Oxidative Damage In Stationary-Phase Mutagenesis In Bacillus Subtilis, Holly Anne Martin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The process of stationary-phase mutagenesis, also known as adaptative or stress-induced mutagenesis, is a phenomenon where bacterial cells accumulate mutations in non-replicative conditions. This process has mainly been studied in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis; however, the underlying mechanisms found in each of these systems differ. Here, I use B.msubtilis to study previously understudied aspects of stationary-phase mutagenesis. In this dissertation, I describe work that has led to three major discoveries which are described below.

First in B. subtilis, Mfd is important for stationary-phase mutagenesis and its mutagenic function at regions of the genome that are transcriptionally upregulated has been …

Respiratory And Perceptual Responses To High Intensity Interval Exercise In Obese Adults, Nicholas Andrew Ross

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Purpose: Obese adults experience low lung volume breathing at rest and during exercise, which provokes ventilatory constraints and dyspnea on exertion. High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) has emerged as an alternative to continuous exercise (CE); however, the effects of HIIE on lung volumes, ventilatory constraints and dyspnea on exertion have not been studied in obese adults and thus tolerability of HIIE remains unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the differences in respiratory and perceptual responses during HIIE versus CE in obese adults when compared with nonobese adults. Methodology: Ten healthy, nonobese (24.1 ± 6.2 yr., BMI: 23 …

Detection Of Snps Associated With Bone Loss Rate By Using Machine Learning Approaches, Avinash Yaganapu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases seen in postmenopausal women, it decreases the bone density and quality, and later causes bone loss. Generally, bone loss occurs when bone losses its content and become porous: a sponge like substance. In most Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS), researchers perform experiments with genomic data that contains some millions of numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and checks their association with the trait or disease. In this thesis, we performed two separate analyses with 2207 (of bone loss and bone gain) and 645 (of bone loss) instances separately. For predicting the SNPs …

An actor who is portraying a grieving character can also grieve simultaneously about the character’s given circumstances, which affects the character development and mental health of the actor. This thesis assesses how the character Tonya, in August Wilson’s King Hedley II, engages with grief as an African American woman and offers a process for the actor to engage and disengage with loss. “Good Grief” will unpack Constantin Stanislavski’s system of acting, focusing on the Magic “If” and the given circumstances, while also introducing the “Five Stages of Grief” coined by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. Through the scholarship of theatre practitioners and psychologists …

Development Of In Vitro Models To Study The Rapid Extraintestinal Dissemination Of Salmonella., Adarsh Gopinath May 2020

Development Of In Vitro Models To Study The Rapid Extraintestinal Dissemination Of Salmonella., Adarsh Gopinath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Salmonella appears in the bloodstream of mice in as little as 15 minutes after oral inoculation and establishes persistent colonies in the spleen and liver. While its pathway to blood is undetermined, this phenomenon is dependent on the activity of Salmonella pathogenicity island 2 (SPI-2) coded type III secretion system (T3SS) and CD18+ phagocytes. We hypothesize that dendritic cells associated with the basal face of the gut epithelium, that are naturally migratory and known to sample for luminal antigens directly transport Salmonella to the bloodstream. This process comprises of at least two phases, dissociation and reverse transmigration. We define dissociation …

Dual Role Of Antimicrobial Peptide Cathelicidin In Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease., Fengyuan Li May 2020

Dual Role Of Antimicrobial Peptide Cathelicidin In Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease., Fengyuan Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) have high morbidity and mortality in its severe forms. One of the major features in different forms of ALD is the altered gut microbiota. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a crucial role in maintaining gut microbiota homeostasis. LL-37 (known as CRAMP in mouse) is the sole member of the human cathelicidin family and has piqued great research interest for its dual role in modulating microbiota and the immune response in metabolic diseases. Inflammasome activation is an important component of the liver pathophysiology in ALD and requires two signals for its full activation to induce the …

The Emerging Oral Pathogen, Filifactor Alocis, Disrupts Neutrophil Functions To Enhance Survival And Dysregulate Inflammation., Irina Miralda Molina May 2020

The Emerging Oral Pathogen, Filifactor Alocis, Disrupts Neutrophil Functions To Enhance Survival And Dysregulate Inflammation., Irina Miralda Molina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Periodontitis is an irreversible, chronic inflammatory disease where pathogenic microbial communities accumulate in the gingival crevice. Advances in culture-independent techniques have facilitated the identification of new bacterial species in periodontal lesions, such as the Gram-positive anaerobe, Filifactor alocis. Neutrophils are a major component of the innate host response, and the outcome of their interaction with F. alocis may be a determinant of oral health status. While neutrophil functions typically protect the host against periodontal disease, oral pathogens have adapted to evade or disarm neutrophil microbicidal functions while promoting mechanisms that drive inflammation, which also provides a source of nutrients …

Application Of Biochar As An Additive To Enhance Biomethane Potential In Anaerobic Digestion, Cecilia B. Frias Flores

Theses

Energy and useful materials can be produced by applying biological and thermal conversion processes such as anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis. Agricultural and industrial wastes seem to be the most attractive substrates since they are essentially unlimited resources. Pyrolysis has been used mostly for the conversion of biomass to bio-crude and biochar, a stable form of nearly pure carbon that has application in many agricultural and environmental applications. There is a widespread literature describing use of biochar as an additive to stabilize the anaerobic digestion process. We studied the effects that biochar has on the biomethane potential (BMP) during anaerobic digestion …

Health Inequalities, Lawrence O. Gostin, Eric A. Friedman May 2020

Health Inequalities, Lawrence O. Gostin, Eric A. Friedman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The vast health inequalities in the United States and beyond that COVID-19 makes glaringly evident are frequently masked by aggregate statistics, which for years had been showing health improvements. Yet these improvements were inequitably distributed, with benefits disproportionately going to wealthier – and in the United States, white – populations. Globally, vast health inequities also exist among and within countries. The inequalities, which have also helped fuel the rise of populism, extend far beyond health care, including to wealth and income. Disaggregated, granular data is critical to understanding these inequalities.

Addressing health inequities must extend far beyond universal access to …
