The Benefit Of Neonatal Intensive Care Units Providing A Specialized Program For Newborns In Drug Withdraw, Jessie Creekmore May 2020

The Benefit Of Neonatal Intensive Care Units Providing A Specialized Program For Newborns In Drug Withdraw, Jessie Creekmore

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Hospitals across America have intensive care units dedicated to neonates who are born with a wide variety of issues, with the hope that specialized care will promote healthy growth so the newborn can return home with its family. Unfortunately, the majority of the country is seeing an increase in neonates being born with drugs in their system from their mother’s dependency during pregnancy. Delivering mothers who were addicted to opioids quadrupled between 1999-2004, which resulted in an increase of infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome from 1.2 per 1000 births in the year 2000 to 5.63 per 1000 births in …

Efficacy Of A Mobile Application In A Chronic Kidney Disease Population, Jennifer R. Zamora May 2020

Efficacy Of A Mobile Application In A Chronic Kidney Disease Population, Jennifer R. Zamora

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high healthcare costs, poor health outcomes and low quality of life (Donald et al., 2018). The US CKD prevalence is 15%, costing Medicare $79 billion in 2016 (United States Renal Data System, 2018). Self-management could reduce CKD burden (Jeddi, Nabovati, and Amirazodi, 2017). Mobile technology offers a low-cost, ease-of-access platform for chronic disease self-management (Whitehead & Seaton, 2016), potentially slowing disease progression and improving health outcomes (Jeddi, 2017). The purpose of this project was to utilize a CKD-specific mobile application, CARELogiQ, to facilitate symptom management; increasing patient satisfaction and decreasing hospitalizations and ER …

The Food Choice Magician: The Dietician, Sylvia E. Martinez May 2020

The Food Choice Magician: The Dietician, Sylvia E. Martinez

Cohort VIII

Poor or inadequate caloric intake can hinder the improvement of comorbidities treated in primary care settings. Metabolic syndrome is major health concern that encompasses surplus of energy, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles (Kaur, 2014). The notion to develop and implement a multidisciplinary approach to improve the overall health of the community was the driving force of this quality improvement project to target metabolic syndromes. Following a 10-day reflective practice, those with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes all had the necessity of dietary modifications to promote healthy food choices to ameliorate comorbidities and improve overall health. Literature reviewed outlined the significance of intervention …

The goal of the PEG treatment was to help with the ease of a bowel movement within 24-48 hours. The project was conducted at Behavioral Hospital of Bellaire, a mental health hospital in Houston, Texas. A …

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring As A Guide To Disease Management, Monnie Adereti May 2020

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring As A Guide To Disease Management, Monnie Adereti

Cohort VIII

Background: Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is written as two numbers. The first (systolic) number represents the pressure in blood vessels when the heart contracts or beats. The second (diastolic) number represents the pressure in the vessels when the heart rests between beats. Hypertension is a medical condition that results from having blood pressure that is too high, and it is often referred to as a "silent killer." Most people with hypertension are unaware of the problem because it may have no warning signs or symptoms. When symptoms …

Deficiency Of Complement Component C1q Prevents Cerebrovascular Damage And White Matter Loss In A Mouse Model Of Chronic Obesity., Leah C Graham, Heidi E Kocalis, Ileana Soto Reyes, Gareth R Howell

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Age-related cognitive decline and many dementias involve complex interactions of both genetic and environmental risk factors. Recent evidence has demonstrated a strong association of obesity with the development of dementia. Furthermore, white matter damage is found in obese subjects and mouse models of obesity. Here, we found that components of the complement cascade, including complement component 1qa (C1QA) and C3 are increased in the brain of Western diet (WD)-fed obese mice, particularly in white matter regions. To functionally test the role of the complement cascade in obesity-induced brain pathology, female and male mice deficient in C1QA, an essential molecule in …

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research was conducted to evaluate where farmers and ranchers find political information and assess their political preferences. By conducting a survey of Arkansas farmers and ranchers we were able to determine that they prefer face to face interaction as a source of information by large margins. They typically consult friends, peers, and extension agents where appropriate. Depending on the type of political information they are seeking (information about candidates as opposed to information about policy topics), they often used other types of information sources such as the internet and broadcast media. We also ascertained that farmers and ranchers have …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Key Messages:

  • Evidence suggests that ocean biodiversity at all levels is being lost as a result of the direct and indirect impacts of human pressures. The main drivers of biodiversity loss are overexploitation and human pressures in coastal environments (development, habitat loss, pollution, disturbance). Increasingly, climate change and ocean acidification are and will be drivers of biodiversity loss especially in sensitive coastal ecosystems.

  • Despite advances in understanding the distribution of species and habitats in the ocean, many aspects of marine biodiversity remain poorly understood. As a result, changes in marine biodiversity are difficult to ascertain and there is a critical …

Improving Medication Adherence In African American Adult Females With Hypertension, Donald Welch May 2020

Improving Medication Adherence In African American Adult Females With Hypertension, Donald Welch

Doctoral Projects

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that adherence among patients with chronic diseases averages nearly 50% in developed countries (Lam & Fresco, 2015). Medication non-adherence is recognized as a significant public health issue that leads to poor health outcomes and added healthcare costs. Multiple African American adult females with hypertension have a high prevalence of non-adhering to their treatment plan. Numerous factors lead to poor medication adherence, including socioeconomic factors, therapy-related factors, patients-related factors, condition-related factors, and health system/healthcare team-related factors (Lam & Fresco, 2015). Medication adherence can lead to a decreased risk of adverse outcomes such as stroke and …

Optimization Of A Gfp Biosensor For The Discovery Of Novel Antibiotics, Drake Heinz

Master's Theses

In today’s world, there is an urgent need to discover novel antibiotics due to the rise of antibiotic resistance and the lack of new ones being approved. Building off of Hanson et al. and their reduction-oxidation sensitive green fluorescent protein (roGFP)(1), that we yeast codon optimized (2); I wanted to determine if I could create a real-time biosensor that has the ability to respond to ROS produced in the stress response triggered by antibiotics as a platform to identify novel antibiotics. To achieve this, I need to know if it will oligomerize in bacterial cytoplasm due to its two cysteines …
