Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to increase HPV vaccination initiation rates in a primary care setting. This was accomplished through evidence-based provider and parental education using presumptive language and distribution of a customized toolkit. Design: The project protocol was designed using a theoretical approach about chosen health behaviors from the Health Belief Model. Outcomes included initiation rates, efficacy of a toolkit intervention, efficacy of a recall system, and provider satisfaction. Methods: A two-sided Fisher’s Exact Test was performed. Primary outcome results indicated a non-significant increase in vaccination rates. Of the 24 patients who received the toolkit, 25% chose …

Breastfeeding Education In The Postpartum Period., Kiersten Proctor

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Breastmilk is the best source of nutrients for an infant, yet many mother-infant dyads do not sustain breastfeeding past initiation. Breastfeeding education and support offered to the motherinfant dyad in the postpartum period have the potential to increase maternal breastfeeding selfefficacy, and attribute to a longer duration of breastfeeding. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project was to implement breastfeeding education and support in the postpartum period to mothers who have initiated and maintained breastfeeding by the time of the newborn well-child check, occurring at two to eight days postpartum. This project aimed to increase …

Understanding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Among Haitian American Women: A Cultural Perspective, Balkys L. Bivins, Indra R Hershorin, Lonar M. Umadhay

Faculty Articles

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is 19.7% in Haiti (DeGennaro et al., 2018). Haitian American women (HAW) experience difficulties with adherence to T2DM treatment and management (Bivins, 2016; Magny-Normilus et al., 2019; Vimalananda et al., 2011; Huffman et al., 2013); however, no previous study was found that focused exclusively on Haitian American women with T2DM. Van Manen's six research activities guided this phenomenological qualitative inquiry. Recruitment included 25 Haitian American women (N = 25) with T2DM from three South Florida counties. Data were collected using a vignette and audio-recorded semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. Recordings were then …

Customer Experience In Tourism: A Review Of Definitions, Components, And Measurements, Maksim Godovykh, Asli D. A. Tasci

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Considered as a more competitive advantage than price, product, or quality, the concept of experience has received increasing attention in different disciplines. However, the pathway for handling experience has not been clearly set forth due to divergent conceptualizations and insufficient measures of customer experience. This study critically analyzes empirical and conceptual literature on experience, provides a holistic definition of experience, proposes an experience model with four main components (emotional, cognitive, sensorial, and conative), and suggests using a combination of several measures to capture the totality of tourism experience at pre-visit, onsite, and post-visit stages. These suggestions provide important implications for …

The Antitrust Impact Of Venture Capital Firms On Concentration In The Technology Sector, Bushra Samimi

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Technology plays a significant and crucial role in the current global economy. It impacts consumer welfare, the job market, economic progress, and the emergence of innovative technology. Due to the fact that the technology sector provides necessary and critical services, technology companies exercise immense power over consumers who rely on their products. The rising concentration in the technology sector magnifies the potential anticompetitive forces at play. This article argues that venture capital financing leads to anticompetitive effects in the technology industry. Although most startups intend to eventually go public through an initial public offering (“IPO”), the liquidity pressures from venture …

Plasticity Of Least Tern And Piping Plover Nesting Behaviors In Response To Sand Temperature, Alicia K. Andes, Mark H. Sherfy, Terry L. Shaffer, Susan N. Ellis-Felege

Biology Faculty Publications

Birds that nest on the ground in open areas, such as Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) and Interior Least Terns (Sternula antillarum athalassos), are exposed to high temperatures in thermally stressful environments. As a result, some ground-nesting avian species have adapted behavioral strategies to maintain thermal regulation of eggs and themselves. We assessed the impact of sand temperature on shorebird nesting behaviors by installing video cameras and thermocouples at 52 Least Tern and 55 Piping Plover nests on the Missouri River in North Dakota during the 2014–2015 breeding seasons. Daily duration and frequency of shading behaviors exhibited …

The Nature Of Comparison: Macunaima And Orlando, Václav Paris Jul 2020

The Nature Of Comparison: Macunaima And Orlando, Václav Paris

Publications and Research

Dominant modes for comparing modernist literatures do so by coordinating individual texts against a larger narrative of modernity conceived as economic or political globalization. This article proposes an alternative premise for comparison. Instead of focusing on development, it considers the ways in which different national modernisms registered a changing modernity in terms of nature and natural history. This switch is demanded by two texts that bear a number of thematic and conceptual similarities and were published months apart in 1928: Mário de Andrade’s Macunaíma and Virginia Woolf ’s Orlando. Both works rethink Darwinism’s import for national representation by adapting the …

Effectiveness Of Current Hygiene Practices On Minimization Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Different Mushroom Production-Related Environments, Vincenzo Pennone, Kenneth Lyonel Dygico, Aidan Coffey, Cormac G.M. Gahan, Helen Grogan, Olivia Mcauliffe, Catherine M. Burgess, Kieran Jordan

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Background: The commercial production of Agaricus bisporus is a three stage process: 1) production of compost, also called “substrate”; 2) production of casing soil; and 3) production of the mushrooms. Hygiene practices are undertaken at each stage: pasteurization of the substrate, hygiene practices applied during the production of casing soil, postharvest steam cookout, and disinfection at the mushroom production facilities. However, despite these measures, foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, are reported in the mushroom production environment. In this work, the presence of L. monocytogenes was evaluated before and after the application of hygiene practices at each stage of mushroom production …

Low grade, chronic inflammation is a critical risk factor for immunologic dysfunction including autoimmune diseases. However, the multiplicity of complex mechanisms and lack of relevant murine models limit our understanding of the precise role of chronic inflammation. To address these hurdles, we took advantage of multi-omics data and a unique murine model with a low but chronic expression of IFN-γ, generated by replacement of the AU-rich element (ARE) in the 3’ UTR region of IFN-γ mRNA with random nucleotides. Herein, we demonstrate that low but differential expression of IFN-γ in mice by homozygous or heterozygous ARE replacement triggers distinctive gut …

Perceptions Of A Small Midwestern Food Cooperative: A Case Study, Rebecca Forsythe

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to illuminate how individuals form perceptions of cooperatives, specifically of Green Top Grocery, a cooperative located in Bloomington Illinois, using the Bourdieu-sian habitus and notions of capital as a frame. Green Top Grocery suffers from fiscal instability since they opened in 2017. They also struggle to gain support of lower income individuals, a key demographic they sought to help since their inception based on their stated values. By conducting qualitative interviews of three sample groups: Green Top Grocery board members and leadership, local food access experts, and West Bloomington residents, and non-participant observations, this …

Lifestyle Intervention’S Effect And Predictive Value On Weight Loss For University Employees, Elizabeth Wang, Azza H. Ahmed, Pi-Ju Liu, Elizabeth A. Richards

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Obesity is a costly and pervasive risk factor that requires attention to reduce chronic disease rates. This study evaluated the effect of a lifestyle medicine intervention, Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP), on reducing weight, blood pressure, lipid levels, and hemoglobin A1c. A secondary aim was to build a preliminary predictive model for computing new participants’ potential weight change from CHIP. We evaluated pre- and post-intervention biometric data of 68 individuals who completed a 10-week CHIP intervention at a Midwestern university clinic. Significant reductions (p < 0.05) were observed in weight, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and A1c. Regression analyses indicated that the best linear model for predicting change in weight was a one-predictor model with systolic blood pressure. The CHIP intervention effectively promoted weight loss and meaningful reductions in chronic disease risk factors. Larger samples are needed for future regression analyses to create a more robust linear model.

Audio-Visual Caption Evaluation Metric For People Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Akhter Al Amin Jul 2020

Audio-Visual Caption Evaluation Metric For People Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Akhter Al Amin

Articles

While the availability of captioned television programming has increased, the quality of this captioning is not always acceptable to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) viewers, especially for live or unscripted content, broadcast from local television stations, especially in smaller markets. There is a need for formal metrics to evaluate captioning quality, to enable audits or quality assurance. Although some current caption metrics focus on comparing the textual accuracy (comparing the caption text and accurate transcription of what was spoken), there are other properties of captions that may affect quality or usability judgments. We propose to conduct experiments with DHH …
