Reliability Of The Styku 3d Whole Body Scanner For The Assessment Of Body Size In Athletes, Joe D. Derouchey, Grant R. Tomkinson, Jesse L. Rhoades, John S. Fitzgerald Jul 2020

Reliability Of The Styku 3d Whole Body Scanner For The Assessment Of Body Size In Athletes, Joe D. Derouchey, Grant R. Tomkinson, Jesse L. Rhoades, John S. Fitzgerald

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Anthropometry is important for predicting sport performance. While 3-dimensional (3D) body scanners increase the feasibility of anthropometric assessment, reliability data on athletes are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of a portable, single-camera 3D body scanning system (Styku S100) to assess circumferences, and whole-body and segmental surface areas and volumes of athletes. Forty-nine (19 male) athletes were scanned six times (two sessions of three scans). The Styku scanner demonstrated nearly perfect reliability. Systematic errors were negligible (mean standardized bias [95%CI]: scan 1 vs. 4, 0.04 [0.02, 0.06]), random errors were negligible (mean standardized typical …

America’S Legacy Of Redlining: State-Sponsored Segregation And Disenfranchisement Of Urban Minority Communities, Ashley Van Slyke

Population Health Research Brief Series

Redlining, the act of designating areas on residential maps as too risky to issue and insure mortgages, in place from 1934 to 1968, disproportionately affected people of color. The effects of redlining remain prominent nearly a century later and continue to contribute to racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities.

This article aims to alert the medical community and public health authorities to accumulating evidence on health benefits from sun exposure, which suggests that insufficient sun exposure is a significant public health problem. Studies in the past decade indicate that insufficient sun exposure may be responsible for 340,000 deaths in the United States and 480,000 deaths in Europe per year, and an increased incidence of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, autism, asthma, type 1 diabetes and myopia. Vitamin D has long been considered the principal mediator of beneficial effects of sun exposure. …

Readability And Suitability Assessment Of Educational Materials In Promoting The Quality Of Life For Postmenopausal Women, Mohammad Ali Morowatisharifabad, Nooshin Yoshany, Manoj Sharma, Narjes Bahri, Sara Jambarsang

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Introduction: Educational materials are frequently used by health providers to inform postmenopausal women about menopause acceptance behavior. However, little attention has been paid to the readability and suitability of these educational materials. The study aimed to determine the readability and suitability of educational materials in promoting the quality of life for postmenopausal women. Material and methods: Multiple instructional materials and books were used for the design and preparation of educational materials and were then tailored to the target group. Readability was measured by using the readability assessment of materials (RAM); and suitability was determined by the suitability assessment of materials …

Gasoline Production Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Using Bi-Functional Structured Catalytic Reactors, Chunxiang Zhu Jul 2020

Gasoline Production Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Using Bi-Functional Structured Catalytic Reactors, Chunxiang Zhu

Doctoral Dissertations

Gasoline accounts for more than half of U.S. transportation energy usage and its consumption continues growing. Crude oil is where gasoline originates from. However, crude oil reserves are limited in most of the countries around the world. U.S. imports thousand barrels of gasoline per day, making it highly dependent on foreign oil import which imposes a threat to U.S. homeland security. To make the U.S. gasoline independent, alternative processes such as Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis process (FTS) can be promising to mitigate high gasoline demand on transportation fuel and increase fuel diversity. However, scalable, selective, and more efficient FTS technologies are required …

Preparing And Improving Garden Soil, Katie Wagner, Melanie Stock, Larry A. Sagers

All Current Publications

A great garden starts with healthy soil. In Utah, there are unique considerations for creating and maintaining healthy soils. Native Utah soils are relatively low in organic matter. One of Utah’s most troublesome, pH-related deficiencies is iron chlorosis, a deficiency of plant-available iron. Soil salinity easily increases in Utah. This fact sheet addresses these challenges to help gardeners transform garden soils from brutal to beautiful!

The Participation Of Children With Multiple Disabilities In The Florida State Alternate Assessment: Parent Perspectives, Lora Reese Jul 2020

The Participation Of Children With Multiple Disabilities In The Florida State Alternate Assessment: Parent Perspectives, Lora Reese

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The perspectives of parents of children with multiple disabilities regarding their understanding and involvement in their child’s participation in the Florida State Alternate Assessment (FSAA) Performance Task and Datafolio are explored in this study. In the United States, federal policies require all students to participate in state-wide formal assessments, including students with multiple disabilities. Current research literature examines the perspectives of teachers and other education professionals regarding the many facets of formalized assessment. However, the perspective of parents of children with multiple disabilities and their child’s participation in formal alternate assessment is scant. Throughout this study, the reflections of six …

Investigation Of The Nitrate And Nitrite Contents In Milk And Milk Powder In Taiwan, T.S. Yeh, S.F. Liao, C.Y. Kuo, W.I. Hwang

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Cow milk is one of the most important nutrition sources besides breast milk for infants and babies; therefore the detection of nitrate and nitrite in milk is of great importance to the health of infants and babies. Traditional colorimetric method for the determination of the nitrate and nitrite concentrations in food is very tedious. In the present study, 100 samples of milk and milk powder were analyzed by ion chromatography to detect nitrate and nitrite simultaneously without tedious preparation steps. The limit of detection (LOD) for nitrate is 0.33 ppm and the LOD for nitrite 0.07 ppm. The measured nitrate …

The influence of oil type on the content of total polar compounds and acid value in used oil was significant, but the effect of food type on these …

Inhibition Of The Ethanolic Extract From Polygonum Cuspidatum Root On The Functions Epstein-Barr Virus Latent Membrane Protein 1, C.-Y. Yiu, S.-Y. Chen, Y.-P. Chen, T.-P. Lin Jul 2020

Inhibition Of The Ethanolic Extract From Polygonum Cuspidatum Root On The Functions Epstein-Barr Virus Latent Membrane Protein 1, C.-Y. Yiu, S.-Y. Chen, Y.-P. Chen, T.-P. Lin

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1), which is expressed during viral latency, has oncogenic properties that are associated with several malignant diseases. The purpose of this study is to examine how the ethanolic extract from Polygonum cuspidatum root (PcE) inhibits the functions of latent membrane protein 1. We found that the viability of EBV-positive cells, B95-8 cells decreased in a time- and dose-dependent manner after the cells were treated with PcE. Furthermore, PcE inhibited the transcription of the LMP1 gene, BNLF1. This was attributed to the inhibition of the expression of Rta, which are known to activate the …
