Adverse Childhood Experiences As Predictors Of Perceived Health: Assessing The Ace Pyramid Model Using Multiple-Mediation, Phillip Hughes, Tabitha L. Ostrout
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to contribute to a litany of mental and physical health problems, including several chronic diseases and death, via a model known as the ACE pyramid. Many of the results of ACEs in the ACE pyramid are known contributors to poor perceived health, which has significant health implications. Despite these results, a possible link between ACEs and perceived health has not been examined to date. Based on the temporal order of the ACE pyramid, we believe any relationship between ACEs and perceived health will be mediated by other components of the model.

Background: A comparison of acute kindney injury (AKI) post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) prediction models is lacking. In this study, we aim to compare the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) CathPCI score to the Mehran score in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) vs non-ACS patients.
Methods: We included patients who received PCI at our facility between July 2015 and December 2017. We excluded patients without a pre- and/or post-PCI serum creatinine, patients on dialysis at the time of PCI and patients with missing variables required to calculate the predictive scoring model. The primary outcome of this study was AKI post-PCI. Performance of …

Impact Of District-Wide Free Lunch On Third-Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension, Rita A. Williams
Walden University Research Conference
Children with low economic status often perform poorly in math and reading. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of universal free and reduced lunch (FRL) policy changes on third grade reading normal curve equivalent (NCE ) scores. I collected secondary data from the Tennessee Department of Education website. The findings indicated there are no statistically significant differences in NCE third grade reading scores after the policy change to 100% FRL. The social implications of these findings offer the potential to raise awareness of universal FRL and its impact on reading comprehension among third grade students.

Impact Of Food Assistance Programs On Food Insecurity, Diet Quality And Obesity, Jessica E. Hill
Walden University Research Conference
Food insecurity and participation in food assistance programs may place families at risk for obesity. Secondary data analyses of the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was conducted. Logistic regression analysis results indicated marginal food security was associated with obesity among SNAP (OR = 1.28) and NON-SNAP participants (OR = 1.54). Full food security was associated with obesity among NON-SNAP participants (OR = 1.65). Among both groups, the greater the diet quality the greater the odds of obesity. Policies and programs to improve the nutritional impact of SNAP and targeted interventions to address food security in low-income adults …

Worldwide, a percentage close to 50% of infertility cases is due to male-related problems including spermatogenesis defects, the process that determines sperm cells’ number and thus male fertility. Spermatogenesis is controlled by different hormones including the luteinizing hormone (LH), the follicle stimulation hormone (FSH), and testosterone. LH stimulates the Leydig cells to synthesize testosterone. FSH acts synergistically with testosterone. There is no current efficient treatment for spermatogenesis defects and people are reverting to natural remedies among which are the pumpkin and carob seeds. This study aims to evaluate the effects of pumpkin and carob seeds’ aqueous extracts on spermatogenesis and …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The infection started as an outbreak of pneumonia-like symptoms in Wuhan, China. Within a few weeks, it spread across the entire globe resulting in millions of cases and thousands of deaths. While respiratory symptoms and complications are well-defined and can be severe, non-respiratory symptoms of COVID-19 are increasingly being recognized. Gastrointestinal manifestations such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain have been added to the list of common COVID-19 symptoms. Their prevalence has been increasing, probably due to increased recognition and experience with the pandemic. Furthermore, …
