The Graston Technique® is a common treatment that combines a warm-up, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), stretching, and strengthening protocols. The treatment is commonly chosen by clinicians to treat musculoskeletal injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine how the Graston Technique® is used in clinical practice by certified athletic trainers to compare to recommendations made by the Graston Technique®. Factors such as time, expense, lack of training in the Graston Technique®, availability of resources, and an overall lack of evidence-based recommendations may have influenced inconsistencies in clinical practice. Although the technique is not always performed according to …

The Effects Of Remote Post-Exercise Ischemic Conditioning On Recovery From Strenuous Exercise, Thomas Jonathan Lillquist Jan 2020

The Effects Of Remote Post-Exercise Ischemic Conditioning On Recovery From Strenuous Exercise, Thomas Jonathan Lillquist

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

BACKGROUND: Strategic limb occlusion applied after exercise (PEIC) may expedite recovery, not just in directly affected tissue, but over the entire body via circulating factors. METHODS: Twenty active college-age males took part in a single-blind randomized crossover design. Participants underwent intervention and SHAM treatments after strenuous exercise sessions. Peak Torque production and soreness measures were gathered directly before and 24-hours after two exercise sessions. STATISTICAL ANALYSES: A 2 x 2 repeated measures analysis of variance with sidak corrections (significance of p<0.05) was used to analyze peak torque and VAS scores. RESULTS: Significance was not observed between any associated pre- and post-peak torque test (p > 0.05). Post-treatment VAS scores were statistically higher than pre-treatment for all conditions except pre-and post-intervention in the direct leg …

Haemonchus Contortus Antigen Identification And Use Of Tropomyosin In Ovine Vaccine Development, Brynnan P. Russ Jan 2020

Haemonchus Contortus Antigen Identification And Use Of Tropomyosin In Ovine Vaccine Development, Brynnan P. Russ

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Globally, the small ruminant industry loses hundreds of millions of dollars due to parasitism by the gastrointestinal nematode Haemonchus contortus. This parasite feeds on blood in the host’s abomasum leading to disease including anemia, hypoproteinemia, lethargy, and death. There have been exhaustive efforts to manage this parasite including different management applications, anthelmintic treatment, and now integration of resistance genetics into a flock. Like antibiotics, overuse of anthelmintics has led to resistance of H. contortus to these drugs. Therefore, other methods of control are the main focuses of many research initiatives. St. Croix are a resistant breed of sheep that mount …

Effect Of Western Diet And Caloric Substitution With Apple Pomace On Fatty Acid Composition And Gene Expression In The Hypothalamus Of Growing Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Ayad Abdulhamid Alawadi Jan 2020

Effect Of Western Diet And Caloric Substitution With Apple Pomace On Fatty Acid Composition And Gene Expression In The Hypothalamus Of Growing Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Ayad Abdulhamid Alawadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The hypothalamus plays a major role in regulating food-intake and energy-expenditure. Hypothalamic dysfunction implicated in neurodegenerative diseases is characterized by diet-induced neuroinflammation and energy dysregulation. Apple pomace, a waste byproduct of processing, is rich in polyphenols and soluble fibers, has the potential to ameliorate diet-inducing inflammation. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of Western diet and caloric substitution of Western diet with 10% apple pomace on brain fatty acid composition and gene expression related to hypothalamic function and health in growing female rats. Growing female Sprague-Dawley rats (age 22-29 days) were randomly assigned (n=8 rats/group) to …

Obese Zucker Rats As A Reverse Translational Model Of Human Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, Mackenzie Shelby Newman Jan 2020

Obese Zucker Rats As A Reverse Translational Model Of Human Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, Mackenzie Shelby Newman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heart failure is a lifelong disability that for over half of those affected leads to mortality within five years after initial diagnosis. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is one of the most reliable independent predictors of heart failure. Pathological LVH is irreversible, but early diagnosis is often missed due to its asymptomatic nature. Obese Zucker rats (OZR), which develop obesity due to dysfunctional leptin signaling, naturally exhibit a LVH that mimics the obese human condition. Animal models are necessary because human donor tissue is scarce. The central hypothesis is that genes and proteins that are differentially expressed during development of LVH, …

Severability As Deregulation: The Construction Of A New Doctrine Through Affordable Care Act Litigation, George Horvath Jan 2020

Severability As Deregulation: The Construction Of A New Doctrine Through Affordable Care Act Litigation, George Horvath

Faculty Scholarship

Scholars have sharply criticized the plaintiffs' severability argument in the ongoing challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), California v. Texas, as a flawed application of contemporary severability doctrine that would disrupt broad swaths of the U.S. healthcare system. This Article argues that the severability argument put forward by the Texas plaintiffs, as well as the District Court's severability analysis in that case, the Department of Justice's severability argument on appeal, and the severability argument made by the so-called "Joint Dissent" in National Federation of Business v. Sebelius together represent an emerging doctrinal alternative to the traditional, Alaska Airlines severability …

The Effect Of Salinity On Soil Microbial Community Structure, Mackenzie Lynn Ries Jan 2020

The Effect Of Salinity On Soil Microbial Community Structure, Mackenzie Lynn Ries

Soil Science

Soil salinity is a widespread problem that affects crop productivity. We expect that saline soils also have altered microbial community structure, soil food webs and related soil properties. To test this, we sampled field soils across four farms in eastern North Dakota that host salinity gradients. We evaluated microbial biomass carbon, phospholipid fatty acid analysis and nematode counts in moderately saline and low saline soils. Additionally, we measured soil properties that represent potential food sources and habitat characteristics that influence microbial communities. We found higher microbial group abundance in moderately saline soils than in the lower saline soils. In contrast, …

Can Soil Microbial Activity Be Improved With The Use Of Amendments?, Matthew Wayne Kruger Jan 2020

Can Soil Microbial Activity Be Improved With The Use Of Amendments?, Matthew Wayne Kruger

Soil Science

Low microbial activity and associated nutrient cycling are concerns in agricultural problem soils. The objectives of this study were to investigate microbial response on problem soils to amendments, drying-wetting cycles, and the interaction of amendments and drying-wetting cycles. In this laboratory study, soil carbon dioxide (CO2) flux was measured from thermal desorption treated soils and saline soils in response to Proganics, spent lime, and composted beef manure applications. Microbial activity was measured through CO2 flux and its rate of change, permanganate oxidizable C, and residual inorganic nitrogen. Proganics had the greatest ability to elevate and sustain microbial activity on problem …

The Influence Of Race, Age, Comorbidities, And Bmi On Disability Following Stroke In Elderly People Living In Their Own Home, Izumi Endo Jan 2020

The Influence Of Race, Age, Comorbidities, And Bmi On Disability Following Stroke In Elderly People Living In Their Own Home, Izumi Endo

Statistics

Stroke is one of the major health issues in the United States. I explored different aspects of disability based on a history of stroke, race, comorbidities, age, and body mass index for the population of community dwelling stroke survivors. Using a dataset drawn from the first wave of the longitudinal study of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (Waite et al., 2019), analysis was performed. The dataset consists of a nationally representative sample of 3,005 community dwelling people between the ages of 57 to 86 years old at the time of recruitment. The results demonstrated that the history …

Torsion Of An Accessory Spleen In A Child With Biliary Atresia Splenic Malformation Syndrome., David A. Simon, Nathan R. Fleishman Md, Pamala Choi, Jason D. Fraser, Ryan T. Fischer

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Torsion of an accessory spleen is an exceedingly rare cause of abdominal pain in pediatric patients. The diagnosis is frequently challenging as presentation is variable and diagnostic imaging can be aspecific. The current case describes an unusual presentation of a torted accessory spleen in a 5-year-old girl with biliary atresia splenic malformation syndrome who initially presented with non-specific abdominal symptoms and fever. The diagnosis was made following fine-needle aspiration of a suspected intraabdominal abscess. The case highlights the diagnostic challenge of accessory splenic torsion and stresses the importance of its inclusion on the differential diagnosis of pediatric patients, especially those …

Ileal Atresia, Obiyo O. Osuchukwu, Rebecca M. Rentea Jan 2020

Ileal Atresia, Obiyo O. Osuchukwu, Rebecca M. Rentea

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Ileal and jejunal atresias are usually described together as jejunoileal atresia (JIA). JIA is a common cause of intestinal obstruction in neonates. It is seen in 1 in 5000 to 1 in 14000 live births. Intestinal atresia can occur in any location on the small bowel as a solitary or even multiple lesions. Distally located atresia usually presents with delayed symptoms compared to proximal ones. Occasionally, JIA is associated with other malformations such as cardiac anomalies, gastroschisis, and cystic fibrosis. Evaluation can be initiated before birth with prenatal diagnosis using ultrasound findings of evidence of intestinal obstruction reported in 29% …

Gastroschisis, Rebecca M. Rentea, Vikas Gupta Jan 2020

Gastroschisis, Rebecca M. Rentea, Vikas Gupta

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Gastroschisis is a paraumbilical, full-thickness abdominal wall defect associated with protrusion of the bowel through the defect. It is rarely associated with genetic conditions. A membrane does not cover the bowel exposed in utero and, as a result, may be matted, dilated, and covered with a fibrinous inflammatory rind. Infants have a high proportion of intrauterine growth restriction. Diagnosis is often made on the 20-week ultrasound with free-floating bowel loops in the uterine cavity. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is elevated in pregnancies with gastroschisis. Compared with other abdominal wall defects diagnosed prenatally such as omphalocele, only 10 percent of cases …

A Simple Technique For The Management Of Refractory Gastrostomy Site Complications A Technical Innovation In Gastrostomy Tube Site Revision, Rebecca M. Rentea, Wendy Jo Svetanoff, Charlene Dekonenko, Courtney Pisano, Charles L. Snyder Jan 2020

A Simple Technique For The Management Of Refractory Gastrostomy Site Complications A Technical Innovation In Gastrostomy Tube Site Revision, Rebecca M. Rentea, Wendy Jo Svetanoff, Charlene Dekonenko, Courtney Pisano, Charles L. Snyder

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Introduction

Longstanding gastrostomy sites are prone to leakage and excoriation secondary to protrusion of gastric mucosa into the tract, dilation of the site over time, and development of refractory granulation tissue. Surgical revision with creation of a new gastric and skin exit site can be difficult. We describe a technique to re-site a gastrostomy tube (GT) utilizing the existing GT site.

Materials and methods

For one patient with gastrostomy site refractory complications, we re-sited the GT using the existing site. A clamp was placed through the old GT site and was palpated through the abdominal wall. An incision over the …

Perioperative Acute Kidney Injury, Sam D Gumbert, Felix Kork, Maisie L Jackson, Naveen Vanga, Semhar J Ghebremichael, Christy Y Wang, Holger K Eltzschig

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Perioperative organ injury is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality of surgical patients. Among different types of perioperative organ injury, acute kidney injury occurs particularly frequently and has an exceptionally detrimental effect on surgical outcomes. Currently, acute kidney injury is most commonly diagnosed by assessing increases in serum creatinine concentration or decreased urine output. Recently, novel biomarkers have become a focus of translational research for improving timely detection and prognosis for acute kidney injury. However, specificity and timing of biomarker release continue to present challenges to their integration into existing diagnostic regimens. Despite many clinical trials using various …
