Ten Theological Trends For Mission In Asia: Fifty Years After Vatican Ii, Cardinal Orlando B. Quevedo Omi Jan 2020

Ten Theological Trends For Mission In Asia: Fifty Years After Vatican Ii, Cardinal Orlando B. Quevedo Omi

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Recently the East Asian Pastoral Institute was privileged to listen to Cardinal Orlando Quevedo speak about the future of mission in Asia. The documentation for this significant presentation was in the form of an outline with specific key points receiving emphasis. Clearly, the Cardinal was speaking from his many years of experience with the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC). An editor, conversant with the FABC, has refashioned the basic insights into a narrative presentation, always seeking to remain faithful to the key insights of Cardinal Quevedo. To better appreciate the ten pivotal points highlighted by the Cardinal, the editor …

Towards A Biblical And Missiological Model Of Cross-Cultural Contextualization Among Chinese Immigrants In "Barrio Chino" Duarte Of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Samuel Telemaque Jan 2020

Towards A Biblical And Missiological Model Of Cross-Cultural Contextualization Among Chinese Immigrants In "Barrio Chino" Duarte Of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Samuel Telemaque

Dissertations DIS

This study examines the challenge of contextualizing the gospel to Chinese immigrants in the Dominican Republic. Chinese people have been migrating to the Dominican Republic, mainly from Guangdong and Fujian, since the early 1960s. The immigrant population grew to appropriately 50,000 in the 1990s. In spite of this steady growth in population, Adventist leaders have not been able to influence Chinese immigrants to appreciate the gospel and to make decisions to begin a journey toward Christ. This study examines this missiological challenge.

The purpose of this study is to develop a model of contextualization for presenting the gospel to Chinese …

The Doctrine Of Atonement In Communal Contexts, Kelvin Onongha Jan 2020

The Doctrine Of Atonement In Communal Contexts, Kelvin Onongha

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The atonement is one of the most crucial of all the Christian doctrines, explaining the death of Christ and its significance to the Christian community. However, the atonement like any other Christian doctrine is only as meaningful as the metaphors employed to communicate this teaching. The majority of the world lives in shame and honor cultures where their concepts of sin and salvation differ from those of Christians. This paper aims at presenting a biblical paradigm for communicating this pivotal doctrine to communal contexts in a manner that makes the gospel translatable to such settings without losing its significance and …

The Marzeah Festival And The Judgment Of Israel In Amos 6:4–7, Tarsisius Sigho Svd Jan 2020

The Marzeah Festival And The Judgment Of Israel In Amos 6:4–7, Tarsisius Sigho Svd

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Amos, who addressed his prophecy to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II, is widely seen as a prophet of social injustice, since the minority wealthy elite groups in Israel were living a luxurious lifestyle at the expense of the poor. However, a close examination of the prophet's words will show that the worship of other gods was also one among other reasons of Israel's judgment by God. This is clear from the passage taken from Amos 6:4–7 that the cultic festival of Marzeah (Amos 6:7) was a direct reason for Israel to be taken exile.

Maturing As Believers Through Interreligious Encounters, Greg Soetomo Sj Jan 2020

Maturing As Believers Through Interreligious Encounters, Greg Soetomo Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

We believe that God is present, actively at work, and reveals Himself in various ways through the religions of humankind. Interreligious dialogue in all its forms can be mutually enriching and can help us in knowing and loving God more and in maturing as believers. It can also promote harmony and facilitate collaboration in building up the human family. The effective pastoral worker is one who is open to God’s Spirit in engaging with people of other faiths, and one who promotes meaningful inter-religious dialogue among peoples on all levels.

Critical Reflection And Pastoral Creativity: The Pilgrim Way Of The People Of God, Christina Kheng Jan 2020

Critical Reflection And Pastoral Creativity: The Pilgrim Way Of The People Of God, Christina Kheng

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Critical reflection and pastoral creativity are important orientations for mission. They involve being authentically present to a pastoral situation, appropriating relevant data, understanding with mind and heart, evaluating through purifying foundational beliefs, and formulating pastorally-sensitive and creative responses. It is a process that requires pastoral workers to be contemplatives-in-action as lifelong co-learners, connecting more deeply with God, self, others, and the context. This is in turn integral to synodality and communal discernment, and characterizes the pilgrim way of the people of God.

The Contribution Of Pastoral Institutes For An Inculturated And Contextualized Ministry, Paul B. Steffen Svd Jan 2020

The Contribution Of Pastoral Institutes For An Inculturated And Contextualized Ministry, Paul B. Steffen Svd

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This article focuses on the contribution of pastoral institutes for an inculturated and contextualized ministry in the non-Western local churches. The treated pastoral institutes in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania have played an outstanding role in implementing the communion ecclesiology of Vatican II in their respective local churches by moving towards an inculturated Christian faith and church and a contextualized Christian and ecclesial praxis. By following the Vatican II appeal to read and scrutinize the signs of the times, they played a catalytic function in the local non-Western churches to evangelize and to develop a meaningful ministry and participatory …

The Feminine Spirituality Of St. Teresa Of Avila: Ascending To God By Descending In Humility, Annie Pan Yi Jung Jan 2020

The Feminine Spirituality Of St. Teresa Of Avila: Ascending To God By Descending In Humility, Annie Pan Yi Jung

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Teresa’s spirituality helps contemporary readers to discover a transcendental path to God – inwardness is not an end in itself; it leads above and is the path toward God. Her writings inspire contemporary readers to reflect on the danger of self-transcendence spirituality, which emphasizes the self’s autonomy and self-sufficiency without dependency on God. Moreover, she helps contemporary Christians to be aware of the peril of self-actualization spirituality, which relies on self-service and selfaffirmation rather than on God’s love and grace.

Spirituality For Eapi: Forming Pastoral Servants With Discerning Hearts, Francisco Machado Jan 2020

Spirituality For Eapi: Forming Pastoral Servants With Discerning Hearts, Francisco Machado

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This paper articulates how the East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI) understands and seeks to foster spirituality. The ideas expressed here are the author’s attempt to convey his own understanding of what good spirituality is and of how EAPI can foster it among its participants. After an introduction about the relevance of spirituality for the formation of pastoral workers, a general definition of spirituality is given. This is followed by a reflection on how some key elements typical of the Asia Pacific context can and should affect our spirituality. The central idea explored in the rest of the paper is that …

Care For Creation And Works Of Mercy, Dennis T. Gonzalez Jan 2020

Care For Creation And Works Of Mercy, Dennis T. Gonzalez

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

In this age of disquiet owing to climate change and contemporary ecological-social calamities, a pastoral Church needs to form servantleaders who can be imaginative practitioners of ecological works of mercy, or who can sow seeds of the New Creation, which reveals the freedom, fidelity, empathy, and eco-social responsibility and maturity of God's sons and daughters in Christ.

Toward Effective Mission In Asia Pacific Today: Key Orientations For Pastoral Workers And Implications For Formation, Christina Kheng Jan 2020

Toward Effective Mission In Asia Pacific Today: Key Orientations For Pastoral Workers And Implications For Formation, Christina Kheng

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The current context of Asia Pacific, viewed in the light of foundational principles for the Church’s mission, requires pastoral workers to develop certain key orientations for effective ministry today. These include spiritual depth and maturity, Christ-centeredness, personal integration, meaningful communion with the ecclesial body, proactiveness in mission through life-giving dialogue, and pastoral discernment and creativity. In association with this, greater collaboration is needed in the initial and ongoing formation of pastoral workers so that the Church’s mission in Asia Pacific will be more effective in these times. It is hoped that this article will provide food for thought toward the …

The Contribution Of Daniel Madigan’S Theological Insights To Interreligious Dialogue In Indonesia, B. Christian Triyudo Prastowo Jan 2020

The Contribution Of Daniel Madigan’S Theological Insights To Interreligious Dialogue In Indonesia, B. Christian Triyudo Prastowo

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Interreligious dialogue has three interrelated dimensions: an interreligious dimension (mutual relationship), a dialogical dimension (effective communication), and a confessional dimension (deepening of faith and cooperation). This essay explores how Madigan’s theological reflection on dialogue with Muslims fits within those dimensions. Through descriptive-analytical and reflective-dialectical approaches, this essay concludes that the three interrelated dimensions of interreligious dialogue explain the holistic view of Madigan’s theological reflection. It is very useful for Christian-Muslim dialogue in Indonesian context. Two important contributions are the relevance of the dialogue of repentance and the approach of mutual hospitality in theological dialogue with Muslims. This is the kenosis …

Influenza A Viruses In Peridomestic Mammals, J. Jeffrey Root, Susan A. Shriner Jan 2020

Influenza A Viruses In Peridomestic Mammals, J. Jeffrey Root, Susan A. Shriner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

During recent years, serological evidence has shown that a number of peridomestic mammals (e.g., those commonly found in or around human structures) are naturally exposed to influenza A viruses (IAVs). In addition, experimental studies have demonstrated that many of these species can successfully replicate several different IAVs, including IAVs of high consequence to public or agricultural health. The replication of some IAVs within this group of mammals could have implications for biosecurity associated with poultry production and live bird markets in some regions of the world. Given this evidence, the need for further study and understanding of the role that …

With Gratitute From Our Daughters: Reflecting On Justice Ginsburg And United States V. Virginia, Meredith Johnson Harbach

Law Faculty Publications

“What enabled me to take part in the effort to free our daughters and sons to achieve whatever their talents equipped them to accomplish, with no artificial barriers blocking their way?”

—Ruth Bader Ginsburg

On September 18, 2020, we mourned the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom many considered not just a cultural icon, but a national treasure. Among many other things, Justice Ginsburg became a later-in-life feminist “rock star,” celebrated for her rousing and impassioned dissents, her fearless defense of equality and autonomy rights, her championing of civil rights, and her persistent determination in the face of injustice. …
