Defensive Publications Series

With the development of industry 4.0 and the recent evolution of the substation automation, as prescribed at least by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 Standard, the network is becoming one of the key element of these trends. Network design and network architecture are becoming more and more complex and leading to challenging problems and issues, such as network security, multiplication of unmanaged broadcast domains, and bandwidth limitations. Recent tools have been introduced to help network engineers visualize different industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) protocol flows and characterizations for devices connected to the network. However, visualization is not enough and …

Which Innovations For A Circular Business Model? A Product Life-Cycle Approach, Elisa Chioatto, Emy Zecca, Alessio D’Amato

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Circular Economy concept has emerged to face current unsustainable economic trends. Circularity requires to go beyond mainstream linear business models in favour of new design strategies and production processes able to support an efficient use and a continuous flow of resources. Clarifying and promoting tools for embedding circularity in firms’ business models is becoming crucial to increase resource productivity and achieve competitive advantages. Notwithstanding eco-innovation has been recognized as a fundamental link to connect circular economy with business models restructuring, still little consensus exists on the boundaries and interlinkages among the concepts of Eco-Innovation, Circular Economy and Circular Business …

Retrospective Analysis Of Hydrologic Performance Of Green Infrastructure Systems Of The Save The Rain (Str) Program In Syracuse, New York, Priyanka Rajashekar

Theses - ALL

Combined sewer systems and urbanization are significant concerns confronted by many aging cities, including the City of Syracuse, New York. This study addresses the role of impervious surfaces in the direct discharge of surface runoff, domestic and industrial wastewaters into Onondaga Lake and tributaries during wet weather events. Onondaga County addressed the combined surface overflow (CSO) problem in 2009 through a stormwater management program known as "Save the Rain” (STR)." This strategy involved adopting a combination of constructed (gray) and plant-soil-atmosphere based (green) infrastructure (GI) practices to address the CSO issue. GI practices are a proven viable option for stormwater …

Genetic Determinants Of Increased Outcrossing In Caenorhabditis Elegans Following Dauer Diapause, Rose Al-Saadi Dec 2020

Genetic Determinants Of Increased Outcrossing In Caenorhabditis Elegans Following Dauer Diapause, Rose Al-Saadi

Theses - ALL

Mating strategies, whether sexual or asexual, confer unique costs and benefits to populations and species that facilitate evolutionary processes. In wild isolates of Caenorhabditis elegans, mating strategies are dependent on developmental history. Outcrossing levels significantly increase when both hermaphrodites and males have transiently passed through the stress-resistant dauer diapause stage (postdauers). However, the molecular mechanisms of how life history can alter mating strategies have not been systematically explored. Mating behaviors of C. elegans can be attributed, in part, to sex-specific responses to ascaroside pheromone components. For example, high concentrations of the pheromone ascr#3 results in a strong avoidance response in …

Road Development And Indigenous Hunting In Tanah Papua: Connecting The Facts For Future Wildlife Conservation Agendas, Freddy Pattiselanno, Andrew Krockenberger Dec 2020

Road Development And Indigenous Hunting In Tanah Papua: Connecting The Facts For Future Wildlife Conservation Agendas, Freddy Pattiselanno, Andrew Krockenberger

Forest and Society

Road development is increasing worldwide. Generally, examples of road building in tropical countries demonstrate that road access can assist the fight against rural poverty, but such developments are also linked to deforestation, pollution, invasions of exotic species, and environmental degradation. For Papua and West Papua provinces (Tanah Papua) in Indonesia, the development of the provincial road network is intended to improve the rural economy, aiming to alleviate poverty within isolated rural areas. However, road development can pose particularly challenging problems to rural and Indigenous communities. Poorly planned roads can be devastating when they provide easy access to illegal hunting that …

Natural And Synthetic Ligand-Binding Induce Different Pilin Assemblies In Vitro And Control P. Aeruginosa Bioactivities In Vivo, And Development Of Bacterial-Motility Enabled Binding Assays, Arizza Chiara Siwa Ibañez

Dissertations - ALL

Proteins found on bacterial cells surfaces are capable of sensing and transducing signals from the environment to elicit a biological response. Fibrous appendages formed by assembly of pilin proteins on P. aeruginosa are surface proteins that are necessary for host colonization, adhesion on abiotic surfaces, controlling motilities, formation of biofilm, horizontal gene transfer and virulence production of the bacterium. Upon contact with stimuli, pili appendages extend and retract on the cell surface, driven by the assembly and disassembly of pili at inner membrane of the bacteria cells. The dynamic response of this protein assembly is likely caused by a conformational …

Maternal Communication At Menarche: Evaluating Direct And Indirect Effects On Age At First Sexual Intercourse In Young Adult Women, Jennifer Horne King

Dissertations - ALL

This study examines maternal communication at menarche and its effects on early sexual decision-making in young adult women. Drawing on principles from Bandura’s social cognitive learning theory and communication privacy management theory, I predicted that certain types of maternal communication at menarche would either promote or inhibit early sexual self-efficacy, with indirect effects on age at first sexual intercourse. I also predicted that maternal communication at menarche would vary in tone or content, depending on age at menarche, with mothers communicating less to daughters who reached the milestone early. A total of 175 sexually active females aged 18 to 26 …

Communication Modes During Romantic Dissolution: The Impact Of Attachment And Intimacy On Initiator Breakup Strategies, William Hoffman Dec 2020

Communication Modes During Romantic Dissolution: The Impact Of Attachment And Intimacy On Initiator Breakup Strategies, William Hoffman

Communication Studies Faculty Research

A majority of romantic pair-bonds will not remain together. Surprisingly, however, less is known about relationship dissolution compared with other stages of romantic relationships, such as initiation and maintenance. The present study addresses this gap by investigating breakup initiators’ communication strategies as outcomes for the individual’s attachment style and the emotional intimacy of a recent terminated romantic relationship. Participants (N = 174) completed a series of empirically reliable and valid Likert-scale measures to assess both predictors: (a) adult attachment and (b) emotional intimacy. Emotional intimacy was a significant predictor of each of the four breakup communication strategies, and adult attachment …

Carsey Publications

Despite a scheme launched by the Indian government in 2017 that has declared achieving close to 100 percent electrification in the country, studies have shown that only 65 percent of rural enterprises in India report having electricity grid connection. While millions of households have been positively impacted by access to electricity, small businesses and smallholder farmers (those with holdings of less than 2 acres) in rural India have been left out of the equation or receive very unreliable power supply. Byproducts of the energy poverty experienced by India’s Bottom of the Pyramid population include an enormous carbon footprint produced by …

Recent Aerodynamic Performance Evaluation Of Commercial And Non-Commercial Vehicles, Shreyash Saxena, G. T. Mahesha, G. Srinivas

Open Access archive

The effect of aerodynamics of commercial and non-commercial are analyzed in this study and after analyzing it is founded that many researchers have not attempted much on the comparative study on two different types of commercial and non-commercial vehicle having a same turbulence model. Secondly, there is lack of numerical three dimensional aerodynamic flow analysis in the case of both commercial and non-commercial vehicles. Hence, there is requirement for numerically analyzing two commercial and non-commercial vehicles having the same turbulence model to better understand the aerodynamics of both commercial and non-commercial vehicles.

Towards A Nuanced Understanding Of Emotional Infidelity: An Investigation Of Behavioral Exemplars And The Impact Of Ambiguity, Morgan Proulx Dec 2020

Towards A Nuanced Understanding Of Emotional Infidelity: An Investigation Of Behavioral Exemplars And The Impact Of Ambiguity, Morgan Proulx

Theses - ALL

Infidelity is an especially severe relational transgression that can act as a predictor of negative outcomes. Though the word “severe” may seem to imply that we can expect a degree of clarity when considering whether a particular behavior qualifies as “infidelity”, thinking of infidelity behaviors in that way might be an oversimplification. Whereas researchers have had some success in predicting the outcomes of and responses to infidelity, our understanding of infidelity may be complicated by a lack of clear behavioral indices for some forms of infidelity, namely emotional infidelity. The present study explored the specific types of behaviors that participants …
