Reflections On Teaching Cyaf 374, Curriculum Planning In Early Childhood Education: A Peer Review Of Teaching Portfolio, Christine Kiewra
Reflections On Teaching Cyaf 374, Curriculum Planning In Early Childhood Education: A Peer Review Of Teaching Portfolio, Christine Kiewra
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
In this course portfolio, I reflect on teaching methods and materials as they relate to course goals and learning outcomes for an undergraduate early childhood education course, CYAF 374. This course offers students a developmental, child-centered approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating learning experiences for children from birth to grade 3. The course is for students who are preparing to teach in Early Childhood, Inclusive Early Childhood, or Primary classrooms. The focus of my reflection and evaluation is on principles of effective teaching practice, experiential learning, reflective practice, and collaboration implemented throughout the course. Finally, I reflect upon successes and …
Peer Review Of Teaching Portfolio For Jour 304: Multimedia Journalism, Olga Pierce
Peer Review Of Teaching Portfolio For Jour 304: Multimedia Journalism, Olga Pierce
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
The term multimedia journalism, as used in the field, is vague and can describe a wide-ranging set of skills, including writing, audio/video production, graphic design, data analysis, and even front-end web development. For this reason, past multimedia offerings in our college have been described as ‘kitchen sink courses’ with many disparate elements thrown in. Through the Peer Review of Teaching Project, the course is analyzed and focused to include a coherent progression of skills.

Critical Thinking, Perspective-Taking, And Cultural Humility In Global Refugee Health Studies: A Peer Review Of Teaching Benchmark Portfolio, Julie A. Tippens
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
This portfolio examines the third iteration of a course I developed for the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies: CYAF 493 – Global Case Studies in Refugee Health and Wellbeing. The primary goal of this course is for students to think critically about the social and structural determinants of refugee health and wellbeing. I have also integrated three core course values to guide instruction: critical thinking, perspective-taking, and cultural humility. Student learning and engagement was analyzed through four areas: (1) a baseline assessment of students’ perceptions of refugees, (2) weekly homework reflections, (3) a book review assignment, and (4) …
Course Portfolio For Math 309: Introduction To Mathematical Proofs - A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Josh Brummer
Course Portfolio For Math 309: Introduction To Mathematical Proofs - A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Josh Brummer
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
In this course portfolio, I examine dimensions of an active learning curriculum developed for a sophomore-level undergraduate course serving as an introduction to mathematical proofs. Prominent course goals include developing effective practices for communicating mathematics using formal language, learning to read, comprehend, and evaluate the validity of mathematical proofs, and practicing to write rigorous and concise mathematical proofs. I explore a new piece of collaborative annotation software called Perusall to help students read and understand mathematics together, and I analyze mastery level grading scales across exams throughout the semester. The portfolio also contains information about the structure and syllabus for …
A Benchmark Teaching Portfolio During Covid-19 Transition For Mngt 360: Managing Behavior In Organizations, Jia Yu
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
This benchmark portfolio describes the revisions and assessments made to MNGT 360: Managing Behavior in Organizations in the midst of COVID-19. This course is offered in the Department of Management within the College of Business at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My goal was to improve the course design by evaluating the more effective teaching methods and assessment tools for this course. I experimented with several new teaching methods and assessment tools such as Kahoot!, online exams and offered some empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of the tools. I found that participation based assignments are an important predictor of overall class …

Exploring Secondary Students’ Abilities In Judging The Credibility Of Digital Content On The Internet, Katie Dailey
Masters Theses
The shift from print to digital environments has created an opportunity and responsibility for educators to focus on instructional planning and practices that reflects the growing complexity of online texts students helping to ensure that their students are information literate. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the how 83 eleventh grade high school English students judge the credibility of information on the internet. The researcher used methodological triangulation to qualitatively analyze by comparing and aligning data from the survey results, observations of students during class discussions, responses to class assignments, and the quality ratings of students’ think-aloud …
Interprofessional Education: A Team Approach In The Classroom, Casey E. Humphrey, Karina Christopher, Cassandra Catherine Ginn
Interprofessional Education: A Team Approach In The Classroom, Casey E. Humphrey, Karina Christopher, Cassandra Catherine Ginn
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Interprofessional education is an increasingly common component of course work for health care professionals. Extant research provides examples of these collaborations across multiple health disciplines, however, there is no research that addresses interprofessional education between the fields of occupational therapy and dietetics. This study was conducted in order to fill the gap of extant research related to unique collaborations between occupational therapy and dietetics. The Interprofessional Attitudes Scale was given to occupational therapy and dietetic students pre/post participation in an interprofessional, active learning, educational case-study. There was one item on the scale that demonstrated a statistically significant change (“shared learning …
“Lol, No, I Didn’T Read”: Students’ Difficulties With Choosing Strategies For Success, Amanda W. Joyce, Jana Hackathorn
“Lol, No, I Didn’T Read”: Students’ Difficulties With Choosing Strategies For Success, Amanda W. Joyce, Jana Hackathorn
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
The purpose of this investigation was to examine how student expectations for their performance in a class related to strategies used to succeed in that class. Results from our study suggest that, even though students are good judges of their academic capabilities, they are not any more or less likely to engage in effective learning strategies even when they begin the semester expecting lower final grades.
A Contract For Success: Increasing Student Engagement And Confidence Through Grade Contracts, Dominic Ashby, Margaret Frozena, James Franklin Mcclure
A Contract For Success: Increasing Student Engagement And Confidence Through Grade Contracts, Dominic Ashby, Margaret Frozena, James Franklin Mcclure
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
This paper explores the impact of grade contracts upon student engagement and confidence in classes. The co-researchers designed a grade contract based upon those described in the literature by Danielewicz & Elbow (2009) and Inoue (2014), and integrating departmental learning outcomes. The contracts were used in the co-researchers’ Spring 2018, Fall 2018, and Spring 2019 First-Year Writing (ENG101 and ENG102) and upper division English (ENG345 and ENG405) courses. Through an IRB-approved study, student reactions to the use of grade contracts were assessed in three ways: coding students’ reflective essays completed at the end of each semester, conducting interviews with student …

Post-Exam Reviews: Turning Wrong Answers Into Learning Moments, Melony Shemberger
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Test-review strategies can help students learn material before an exam, but do students learn from their errors after the tests are returned to them? Grounded in metacognitive principles of reflective practice, a post-exam review enables students to analyze the reasons why they performed as they did on an exam as part of an effort to regular their own path of self-directed learning for future improvement (Owens, 2019). This article, building on prior research about improving test review and recall, shares information from two courses on using a test autopsy as a self-regulated learning approach to prepare students better for tests …
Nutritional Strategies For Nurses In A Fast Paced Occupation, Zachary Christman
Nutritional Strategies For Nurses In A Fast Paced Occupation, Zachary Christman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The foundation of the medical system are the nurses and certified medical assistants. Their personal health condition affects how well diseases and other medical conditions are handled. This article will begin with an overview of the eating behavior of nurses. Three different interventions which have been shown effective in a fast paced workplace are presented in order to improve the health of nurses and certified medical assistants. The first intervention is organizational changes that would increase the amount of time nursing staff have to eat. The second is the use of a messenger bag delivery system to provide needed food, …
Shrimp Farming In Thailand: A Pathway To Sustainability, Warinyupa Phornprapha
Shrimp Farming In Thailand: A Pathway To Sustainability, Warinyupa Phornprapha
Pomona Senior Theses
Throughout this thesis I have laid out several factors that have contributed to the sustainability of shrimp farming in Thailand, and if sustainability whilst maintaining production can ever be achieved. To find out the current situation of shrimp farming in Thailand, the history of global and Thai shrimp farming is described. The social and environmental problems of the unsustainable history of shrimp farming in Thailand is then considered. Solutions to these effects conclude that it is up to the consumer to demand for better regulations from the government and the shrimp companies to ensure a sustainable future for shrimp farming …
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf and Caribbean Research
I spent my nearly 50—year career in marine science working at marine laboratories, most of that as a chief executive officer. So, it is appropriate that my reflections are about marine laboratories, rather than my own science. After relating my career course, I turn my attention to the history and development of marine laboratories along the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Surprisingly, the region’s first laboratory was actually constructed in 1903 at Cameron, LA, but operated less than a decade before closing. It was not until after World War II that the university—affiliated marine laboratories of today …
Digital Hurewicz Theorem And Digital Homology Theory, Samira Sahar Jamil, Danish Ali
Digital Hurewicz Theorem And Digital Homology Theory, Samira Sahar Jamil, Danish Ali
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we develop homology groups for digital images based on cubical singular homology theory for topological spaces. Using this homology, we obtain two main results that make this homology different from already existing homologies of digital images. We prove digital analog of Hurewicz theorem for digital cubical singular homology. We also show that the homology functors developed in this paper satisfy properties that resemble the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms of homology theory, in particular, the homotopy and the excision axioms. We finally define axioms of digital homology theory.
Changes In Likely Activation Patterns Of Alcohol Expectancies After Exposure To The Expectancy Challenge Alcohol Literacy Curriculum (Ecalc), Jessica Flori
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Alcohol is the most commonly used substance by adolescents in the United States with underage alcohol use being associated with a variety of harms. The Expectancy Challenge Alcohol Literacy Curriculum (ECALC) is a 45-minute interactive expectancy challenge intervention that has been found to be effective in reducing alcohol use. Although ECALC is thought to produce reductions in drinking by changing expectancies, the nature of these expectancy changes has yet to be explored. The purpose of the present study was to link ECALC outcome studies with a memory model approach to understanding the mechanism by which expectancies influence behavior. Participants (n …

Best Youth Education Methods For Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention, Caitlin F. Walchonski
Best Youth Education Methods For Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention, Caitlin F. Walchonski
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Sexual health education in the United States is inconsistent; information and methods vary from one location to another. Education plays a large role in developing safe sex practices, and despite the sexual education efforts, rates of sexually transmitted infections have risen for five consecutive years in the United States. A systematic literature review was conducted to determine the best methods for educating adolescents to promote behaviors to enhance sexual health. Multiple types of interventions have been studied including cognitive behavioral interventions, comprehensive sexual education, parent and teen dyad education, and abstinence only education. Sexual behavior is influenced by a variety …
Patient Satisfaction With Telehealth Services Compared To In-Office Visits: A Systematic Literature Review, Crystal L. Fleischhacker
Patient Satisfaction With Telehealth Services Compared To In-Office Visits: A Systematic Literature Review, Crystal L. Fleischhacker
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Telehealth is changing the current paradigm of healthcare. As an emerging mode of healthcare delivery, telehealth stands to help alleviate the shortage of primary care and specialty care providers especially patients in rural areas. In addition to increasing access of healthcare, this service allows for flexibility, convenience and has the potential to decrease healthcare costs while improving patient outcomes. The objective of this literature review was to examine patient satisfaction with telehealth compared to in-office visits. A systematic search was conducted and a total of 17 articles that met inclusion criteria were examined. Data and factors evolving around patient satisfaction …
Prey And Predators, Roberta Zamma Gallarati
Prey And Predators, Roberta Zamma Gallarati
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This exhibition focuses mainly on the relationship between Prey and Predators in the animal world. The idea comes from the many documentaries I watch about animals. In particular, I love the pent-up tension that is created moments before the predator attacks. What I want to represent in my drawings is role changing or the exception to the rule, when the traditional predator becomes a prey and vice versa. The subverted roles offer a new perspective of the Prey and Predator relationship by empowering the traditional prey with the same courage, strategy, and aggressiveness of the traditional predators in a sort …
The Victimization Of The African Girl Child: Primary Schools As Unsafe Spaces For Girls In Cameroon, Sandra Bume Nambangi
The Victimization Of The African Girl Child: Primary Schools As Unsafe Spaces For Girls In Cameroon, Sandra Bume Nambangi
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Violence against girls in and out of school settings is a problem that is on the rise in countries of sub-Sharan Africa. In Cameroon today, the abuse of girls has progressed into the realm of primary education affecting prepubescent girls, making schools unsafe spaces for girls and thereby, hindering them from accessing and furthering their education, basic rights and agency. A study on the victimization of primary school girls in Malawi funded by the United Nations found that girls are subject to several forms of violence as a result of their gender and that this disrupts their access to basic …
The Monster At The End Of This: A Feminist Media Analysis Of Coverage Of Representative Ilhan Omar, Emma L. Schlei
The Monster At The End Of This: A Feminist Media Analysis Of Coverage Of Representative Ilhan Omar, Emma L. Schlei
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
With the impending 2020 election and the upcoming centennial anniversary of the 19th amendment, the topic of women in politics is more relevant than ever. Ilhan Omar is a Representative elected to the 2018 United States House of Representatives and is one member of the “squad,” a group of four women of color under the age of 50 who identify as part of the left wing of the Democratic Party. Ilhan Omar has been the focus of many liberal and conservative media outlets. In this research I focus on the tropes of Islamophobia that Omar faces to examine how political …
