Modeling Of Gas-Solid Flows In Industry With Computational Fluid Dynamics Tools: An Assessment Of Modeling Methodologies And Computational Challenges, Kaylee Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The modeling work and simulation results contained within this thesis come from two different applications that together emphasize multiple of the challenges currently faced by researchers in the field of numerical modeling of gas-solids flows with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, and highlight avenues of potential resolutions to these challenges.
In the first body of work, the MFiX CFD suite, developed by the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE NETL), was utilized to model and simulate several experimental conditions of a fluidized bed (in 2D), and a hopper (in 3D), where solid-solid collision effects play a dominant role. …
Case Judgments And Juror Perceptions Of The Stereotypical Defendant, Mariah Sorby
Case Judgments And Juror Perceptions Of The Stereotypical Defendant, Mariah Sorby
Theses and Dissertations
Stereotypes and prejudice have been shown to bias information processing and decision making. There are physical traits that are stereotypically associated with criminals, i.e. tattoos, dark skin-tone, facial untrustworthiness, Afrocentric facial features. These features have been shown to influence verdict decisions and sentencing outcomes. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the additive effects of these features while also considering individual levels of prejudice and egalitarian views. The current research aimed to investigate the effects of several combinations of features on defendant verdict, sentencing, and criminal appearance ratings, rather than assessing the features in isolation, while controlling for prejudice …
Impacts Of Market Forces And Agricultural Practices On Land Surfaces Related To Scientific Modeling And Remote Sensing Applications, Jon Starr
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the rotational needs of crops, homogenous crop fields, and external influences such as market and policy changes, crop production generates significant changes to the landscape on annual and semi-annual basis. In this study we looked at two aspects of this change.
In the first aspect of the study, we attempt to account for market and policy driven producer’s decision making through a new model constructed by pairing an economics model with the ALMANAC crop simulation model via a two-way coupling. This coupled model approach integrated farmer’s land-use choices based on relative economic returns and produced dynamic land use …
The Relationship Between Saudi Citizen Perceptions Of Vision 2030 And Saudi Government Social Media Use To Promote Vision 2030, Essa Saleh Alkathiri
The Relationship Between Saudi Citizen Perceptions Of Vision 2030 And Saudi Government Social Media Use To Promote Vision 2030, Essa Saleh Alkathiri
Theses and Dissertations
Public relations (PR) tools have enabled more communication between governments and citizens in the whole world. However, a single communication channel could be widespread among many governments. These PR tools help governments to share national goals, projects, and programs with their citizens. Grunig and Hunt (1984) highlighted that the value of two-way communication channels is better suited to develop an understanding between public organizations (i.e. governments) and citizens to establish both internal and external mutual public-organization or citizen-government understanding. However, the practical implementation of two-way communication channels for the government-citizen relationships and dialog remains is unclear. As a result, the …
Mass Shootings As The New Normal: An Evaluation Of Wikipedia Data And Flashbulb Memories As A Measurement Of Public Perception, Richard Belz
Mass Shootings As The New Normal: An Evaluation Of Wikipedia Data And Flashbulb Memories As A Measurement Of Public Perception, Richard Belz
Theses and Dissertations
Objectives: As mass shootings have become more frequent in recent years, one question that arises is whether the public’s attention and memory of these mass shootings may be becoming less salient over time. To evaluate changes in the saliency and public interest in these tragedies, this two-part study 1) utilized open access data from Wikipedia and 2) measured the presence of flashbulb memories (FBM) for these events.
Methods: For Part I, changes in byte size and edits in 19 mass shooting Wikipedia articles were examined over 12 months to determine public interest in these events. In Part II, 500 participants …
