Empirical research on deliberative democracy has moved through a series of stages, the most recent of which has entailed the study of real world deliberative mini-publics – small groups of randomly selected citizens, operating according to deliberative principles (including facilitated small-group discussions) and tasked with considering one or a number of important policy, institutional or constitutional reform issues (e.g. Elstub, 2010, 2014; Goodin & Dryzek, 2006). Among the various forms of DMPs citizens’ assemblies are seen as ‘democratically superior’ (Elstub, 2014, p. 172). As Graham Smith (2009) notes ‘[n]o other randomly selected body has been given the level of influence …

Ireland’s Citizens’ Assembly (CA) of 2016–18 was tasked with making recommendations on abortion. This paper shows that from the outset its members were in large part in favour of the liberalisation of abortion (though a fair proportion were undecided), that over the course of its deliberations the CA as a whole moved in a more liberal direction on the issue, but that its position was largely reflected in the subsequent referendum vote by the population as a whole.

Leveraging Program-Level Transparency As A Communication Strategy For Sustainability Through Recruitment And Retention, Joy Santee
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
This article demonstrates how principles of Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) can be extended to academic programs to create a communication strategy that promotes recruitment and retention, particularly in liberal arts programs. Analysis of program-level transparency at two schools demonstrates how faculty can leverage TILT at that level to communicate program benefits to various stakeholders, supporting program sustainability through recruitment and retention.

Creating A Deep Learning Environment In A Virtual Lab For Cybersecurity, Randall Joyce, Brandon Dixon, Abdul Yarali
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
In today’s world, there is an increasing need for cybersecurity professionals because of the increase of Internet-connected devices, digital assets, and information systems infrastructure. Growth of automation and digitization, enterprise safety risks, the illusion of privacy and consumer data breaching, data storage, and management in the world of massive internet device connectivity that is expected in the near future collectively bring new security concerns. In order for students to gain the required skill sets to enter the workforce, they need hands-on experience to build essential employability qualities, confidence, knowledge, and experience. Murray State University’s Telecommunications Systems Management program uses a …

Developing Active Learning Exercises For Any Content, Cynthia Dickerson, Rachel M. Hopp, Jeffery A. Masters
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Teaching and learning both should be fun, engaging, and impactful in lasting ways. Studies show that student engagement and information retention increases when students are immersed in active learning - hands-on usage of the information. Modern faculty members are seeking methods of incorporating active learning into their teaching, but may not know where to start when creating their own active learning materials. This paper will outline a process for creating new activities. Included are appendices full of creative active-learning formats (hot topics borrowed from primary and secondary education), as well as guidelines on when to use them that will make …

Use Of Visual Imagery As An Alternative To Traditional Written Assignments, Geela Spira
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
Use of alternatives to written methodology for pedagogical coursework is worth investigating as students increase use of visual means in their social media communications. When offered a choice, a full 61% of students report preferring visual video feedback over written feedback. Use of a visual imagery method, named PhotoVoice was used to reconstruct a written assignment in an Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy curriculum. The specific methodology included use of auto-photography where students photographed their daily occupations. Photo elicitation was used to extract meanings from the visual images. 54 students photographed their daily occupations and routines over a 2-4 week …

There is conflicting evidence in the literature on biological effects between different low LET radiations. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different low LET radiations on radiobiological response. Chromosomal radiosensitivity was measured in human lymphocytes from healthy donors using the G2 chromosomal radiosensitivity assay. Radiation induced mitotic inhibition was also measured. Cells were irradiated to doses of 0.05 and 0.5 Gy using a Cobalt 60 teletherapy unit and a Linac operating at 6 MV (photons) and 12 MeV (electrons). As expected, a dose response was observed with increasing dose resulting in greater response. No statistically …

Emory International Law Review
Chinese corporations have made extensive investment in areas such as central Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa under the Belt and Road Initiative projects. Due to the feature of the investment and the risks involved in the countries, it is important for the Chinese investors to choose the proper forum to resolve the investment disputes arise from the BRI projects. This Comment compares the three major investor-state arbitration institutions, including ICSID, UNCITRAL and CIETAC on various aspects. Due to the political influence, financial risk, convenient location and panel composition, the Comment proposes CIETAC to be the preferred institution for Chinese BRI …
Pregnancy, Femicide, And The Indispensability Of Legalizing Abortion: A Comparison Between Argentina And Ireland, Agustina M. Buedo
Pregnancy, Femicide, And The Indispensability Of Legalizing Abortion: A Comparison Between Argentina And Ireland, Agustina M. Buedo
Emory International Law Review
On August 9, 2018, after 16 hours of deliberation, Argentina’s senate narrowly rejected the “Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo” bill that would have allowed women the right to terminate their pregnancy during the first 14 weeks. Argentine law currently considers abortion a crime with the exception of two narrowly defined circumstances that are rarely applied. The legalization of abortion is vitally important to the women in Argentina who face an increased risk of femicide. Femicide rates in Latin America are among the highest in the world. Femicide can be linked specifically to pregnant women who could not get an abortion and …

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Obesity, a condition that negatively affects an individual’s physical and mental health, is a growing problem in Twin Falls, Idaho. Like the United States as a whole, Twin Falls County is experiencing an obesity crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ([CDC], n.d), the national obesity rate has increased by 12% from 2000 to 2018. The Twin Falls County obesity rate has increased from 21% in 2011 to 33% in 2020 (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2018). While it took the nation 18 years to increase the obesity rate by 12% (CDC, n.d.), it only took Twin …

E-Cigarette Use Among Youth In Iowa, Miranda Kieler
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Electronic cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery products are battery-operated, heating elements that individuals use to inhale nicotine products rather than traditional cigarettes or cigars (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2020). E-cigarettes can also be used to inhale illicit drugs such as marijuana. Electronic cigarettes can resemble traditional cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, while other products may look like pens, USB sticks, or mods (larger tanks) (CDC, 2020). The e-cigarettes have an atomizer or heating element that helps individuals inhale liquid nicotine vapors. Electronic cigarettes were developed as a potential health tobacco cessation product and thought to reduce the health …

Preventing Opioid Addiction In Buncombe County, North Carolina, Rachel Franquemont
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Opioid addiction is a significant health problem in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Opioid addiction can result in death from overdoses, economic hardship including high costs for treatment, decreased work productivity, and legal involvement (NIDA, n.d.). Mental health issues including opioid addiction are widespread and therefore difficult and costly to help all those afflicted. It has been shown that in the United States fifty percent of people will have at least one diagnosable mental health issue in their lifetime. In addition, 6 out of 10 of these will be moderate to severe (Conyne, Horne, & Raczynski, 2013). Therefore, prevention is a …

Sandpoint is a rural community in Northern Idaho with a population of 9,000 in the city limits and 46,000 within the county. Sandpoint is the largest town and the primary source for all services within Bonner County. There is an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy with the largest and deepest lake in Idaho and many mountains nearby. Even though Sandpoint residents have many options to stay physically active and maintain a healthy weight, a continual rise in obesity within the community and across America has become a trend (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2018). Likewise, the lack of affordable …
Quality Of Healthcare Resources For Transgender Identifying Individuals In Baltimore, Md, K Greer Russell
Quality Of Healthcare Resources For Transgender Identifying Individuals In Baltimore, Md, K Greer Russell
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
More recently, we have seen an increase in awareness of the transgender community nationwide. Despite the transgender community starting to receive representation in popular entertainment media, politics, and within our own localities, there is still a large number of people who have negative perspectives and beliefs about the transgender community and their rights. The transgender community is under constant scrutiny and has to battle for basic human rights on a daily basis. Our politicians are trying to revoke the rights of transgender individuals to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity as opposed to their sex assigned at birth, …

There’S An App For That? Ethical Consumption In The Fight Against Trafficking For Labour Exploitation, Stephanie A. Limoncelli
There’S An App For That? Ethical Consumption In The Fight Against Trafficking For Labour Exploitation, Stephanie A. Limoncelli
Sociology Faculty Works
Among the market-based strategies being used to fight trafficking for labour exploitation are apps aimed at encouraging ethical consumption. Such apps have surfaced in tandem with the increased involvement of businesses in anti-trafficking efforts and the promotion of social entrepreneurism. In this article, I describe and critically analyse three apps aimed at individual consumers, arguing that they do little to actually address labour exploitation. They rest on questionable assumptions about consumption, employ problematic assessment methodologies, and rely on business models that do more to provide opportunities for social entrepreneurs in the burgeoning anti-trafficking field than solutions for labour exploitation in …

The Effects Of External Stakeholder Pressure On Csr Disclosure: Evidence From Indonesia, Anisa Ramadhini Trianaputri, Desi Adhariani, Chaerul D. Djakman
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study examines the effect of external stakeholder pressure on the extent of social and environmental disclosure or corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure. Several studies have examined the impact of internal stakeholder pressure (e.g., ownership or board of directors’ structure) and corporate characteristics on CSR disclosure, but there has been little attention focused on the role of external stakeholders. Therefore, this research seeks to examine the influence on the extent of CSR disclosure by four external stakeholder groups: customer, creditor, auditor, and media. A total of 327 annual reports produced by 109 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange …

On Extreme Perception Bias, Emerico Habacon Aguilar, Klarizze Martin Puzon, Imelda Revilla Molina
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This note investigates perception bias: To what extent do individual opinions confound reality? We estimated the relative gap between self-declared estimates and real data. With a sample of respondents from Laguna, Philippines, we asked about the prevalence of diabetes and smartphone usage. We observed a trend of judgment miscalibration. Responses exhibit significant deviation from facts; for example, inaccuracies can go as high as seven times the real value. Especially for estimates on smartphone ownership, bootstrapped quantile regression models showed that perception bias is associated with age.

The rol oncogenes of Agrobacterium rhizogenes enhance the production of medicinally important compounds in plants and provide a first barrier against the overproduction of reactive oxygen species during biotic and abiotic stress. This study was designed to evaluate the expression of genes involved in biosynthetic pathways and their impact on metabolic contents and environmental stress tolerance in regenerated Ajuga bracteosa Wall. ex Benth. After successful transformation, real-time quantitative PCR confirmed the increased expression (1.94-6.59-fold) of HMGR, HDS, FDS, PAL, and TTG1 genes in transgenic lines. Furthermore, GC-MS coupled with principal component analysis revealed diverse concentrations of 97 metabolites in A. …

Review: James R. Swenson. In A Rugged Land: Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, And The Three Mormon Towns Collaboration, 1953–1954. Salt Lake City: University Of Utah Press, 2018., Rachel Mcbride Lindsey
Mormon Studies Review
When Brigham Young surveyed the vista before him in 1847 and uttered “this is the place,” he meant that the wearied band of Latter-day Saints had finally arrived in Zion. More than a century later, those same words, simple but filled with divine promise, were seen on a neon cowboy at the Nevada state line and scribbled by a young Daniel Dixon as the first in his essay accompanying the Life magazine photo-essay, “Three Mormon Towns.” The year before the essay was printed, Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams pitched an idea to the editors at Life and were granted approval …

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
I am honored to address you women and men who take teaching seriously, not just because of your vocation, but because of your Latter-day Saint heritage of education and your eternal identity as daughters and sons of God. Teaching is part of our spiritual DNA. The oft-used phrase “Education for Eternity” reflects the Latter-day Saint view of the importance of teaching and learning. But it is much more than a maxim, it is indeed our theology, as evidenced by numerous scriptural injunctions and examples of the importance of education for this life and eternity. Teaching is in our souls—part of …
