Emulsion Stability Of Heavy Oil With Surfactants And Nanoparticles, Zainab Abdulmohsein, Baojun Bai, Parthasakha Neogi
Emulsion Stability Of Heavy Oil With Surfactants And Nanoparticles, Zainab Abdulmohsein, Baojun Bai, Parthasakha Neogi
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The recovered crude oil is often in form of an emulsion and the recovery is cut off when water to oil ratio exceeds a certain amount. The emulsions vary from water-in-oil to oil-in-water and the step that follows is to coalesce droplets to get two continuous liquids. Difficulties arise when the oil contains emulsifiers. There are naturally occurring surfactants, or the oil recovered is by enhanced oil recovery techniques which have additives that stabilize the droplets. We have considered below a heavy oil (viscosity 650-750 mPa.s) containing one of the three surfactants: a nonionic surfactant or a cationic surfactant or …

In the aftermath of the movie theater mass shooting in July of 2012 in Aurora, Colorado, Mother Jones magazine created one of the first open-source databases documenting mass shootings in the United States. They focused on documenting rampage shootings in public places which resulted in four or more victims killed by the attacker(s). Their initial database consisted of incidents between 1982 and 2012, then an additional 54 cases were added to this data base of incidents which occurred between 2013 and August 2019. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the incidents gathered in this complete database from 1982 …
Utilizing Economic Ties With China: Brazilian Economic Development Policy In The Age Of Bolsonaro, Aotian Zheng
Utilizing Economic Ties With China: Brazilian Economic Development Policy In The Age Of Bolsonaro, Aotian Zheng
Pepperdine Policy Review
On October 24, 2019, Brazilian President Bolsonaro made his first official visit to China since the start of his presidency. During his speech at the Brazil-Chinese Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum, Bolsonaro claimed that China and Brazil "were born to walk together," stating that the two governments are "completely aligned in a way that reaches beyond our commercial and business relationship" (Bloomberg, 2019). Considering Bolsonaro’s past as a right-wing politician who openly identifies himself with U.S. President Donald Trump, his transformation from radical basher of the Chinese economic presence in Brazil to an advocate of the Sino-Brazilian economic relationship is …

Anticipating Accommodation, Jennifer B. Shinall
Anticipating Accommodation, Jennifer B. Shinall
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
In theory, a reasonable accommodation mandate can remedy worker marginalization by requiring employers to make small adjustments in the workplace that have big payoffs for employees. But in reality, a reasonable accommodation mandate may be an empty promise. Reasonable accommodation is the hallmark feature of the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA "), yet decades of empirical studies indicate that wage and employment outcomes of disabled individuals have not improved--and may have even worsened--since the Act's passage. Economists have been quick to blame the reasonable accommodation mandate for the ADA's failure, but they have lacked sufficient data to discern both what …
Investigation Of Glutamate Carboxypeptidase Ii Roles In The Folate Cycle Dependent Reproduction And Development Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Jessica M. Derham
Investigation Of Glutamate Carboxypeptidase Ii Roles In The Folate Cycle Dependent Reproduction And Development Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Jessica M. Derham
Masters Theses
Glutamate Carboxypeptidase II (GCPII) is a transmembrane, zinc metallopeptidase that is expressed in a wide range of organisms, including roundworms, mice, and humans. In humans, GCPII is primarily expressed in the prostate, kidneys, small intestine, and central nervous system. Within the small intestine, the expected function of GCPII is to aid in the absorption of dietary folate from the intestinal lumen. GCPII cleaves excess glutamates from folate to yield monoglutamated folate which is then readily transported into the enterocyte. Folate can then be used through the one carbon metabolic cycle for the synthesis of nucleotides, conversion of homocysteine to methionine, …
Reprograming Neuronal Cells By Overexpression Of Fibroblast-Specific Transcription Factors, Abdulmohsen Alanazi
Reprograming Neuronal Cells By Overexpression Of Fibroblast-Specific Transcription Factors, Abdulmohsen Alanazi
Masters Theses
In mammals, a complex system of regulatory signals distinguishes tissues, structures and functions. Combinations of transcription factors and co-factors regulate activation and repression of genes that result in cellular differentiation. Whole genome arrays allow the monitoring of genomic expression in specific tissues. Fibroblast microarray studies have shown candidate genes that may be involved in fibroblast identification, including genes that express transcription factors Prrx1, Snai2 and Twist1. A previous study showed that the Prrx1 and Snai2 could reactivate a fibroblast phenotype in hybrid cells that had lost fibroblast identity. Furthermore, overexpression of these factors in liver-derived cells strongly repressed liver gene …

Representations Of Africa In Us Media: A Semiotic Analysis Of Ebola: The Doctor’S Story And Body Team 12, Olubusola Akinpelu
Masters Theses
The Western media has often been criticized for biased coverage of happenings in and around Africa. The 2014 Ebola outbreak created a lot of media attention for West Africa, and by extension, the entire continent. This study examined to what extent postcolonial discourses were infused in two films from the HBO Trilogy: Ebola: The Doctor’s Story (2015) and Body Team 12 (2015). To analyze these texts, I took a semiotic approach by identifying, describing and interpreting the signs in both films, to discuss the postcolonial discourses in three broad themes. Ebola: The Doctor’s Story (2015) was analyzed in the …

The purpose was to gain insight into how highly-at-risk college seniors persist to graduation by discovering what protective factors they utilized in their college career as well as the role resiliency and/or grit may have played. The participants were five undergraduate students who were enrolled at a mid-sized, public university in the rural Midwest. They responded to questions in one semi-structured interview designed to capture their experiences about college starting from high school until …
Important Factors Influencing Attendance At Northwoods League Games, Ryan Eiche
Important Factors Influencing Attendance At Northwoods League Games, Ryan Eiche
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of various factors as they related to attendance at Northwoods League baseball games. This league was an ideal fit for the study as little research has been conducted on this level of baseball. A survey was sent out via the Facebook page of the Lakeshore Chinooks to gather responses from fans on what factors encouraged attendance. Fans were asked to then rate how important each factor was on a five-point sliding scale. The research revealed that situational factors such as convenience, day and time, and weather of the game were …

Homicidal Loss And Disenfranchised Grief, Mothers Of Murdered Descendants: An Exploratory Qualitative Study, Michael Wayne Eagle
Homicidal Loss And Disenfranchised Grief, Mothers Of Murdered Descendants: An Exploratory Qualitative Study, Michael Wayne Eagle
Theses and Dissertations
Violent acts of homicide committed against youth or children can lead to prolonged, devastating, and painful effects on their surviving mothers. Sudden unexpected deaths of descendants can lead to anger, guilt, sorrow, and isolation affecting survivors both emotionally and physically. Descendants’ deaths before the mothers’ deaths are unnatural and can lead to a decline in a survivor’s social actions, a rise in hospitalization rates, higher cases of mortality, complicated grief, and symptoms of PTSD. Cases of disenfranchised grief can surface after a survivor’s loss is ignored or no longer culturally allowed. Instances of empathic failure can result when empathy from …
Do Founders Control Startup Firms That Go Public?, Brian Broughman, Jesse M. Fried
Do Founders Control Startup Firms That Go Public?, Brian Broughman, Jesse M. Fried
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
American competition policy has four big problems: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. These companies each reign over a sector of the digital marketplace, controlling both the consumer experience and the possibility of competitive entry. This Essay argues that the conventional account of how antitrust law allowed this consolidation of market power - that it failed to evolve to address the market realities of the technology sector- is incomplete. Not only did courts fail to adapt antitrust law from its smoke-stack roots, but they gave big tech special dispensation under traditional antitrust doctrine. Swayed by prevailing utopic views about digital markets …
Governing Cascade Failures In Complex Social-Ecological-Technological Systems: Framing Context, Strategies, And Challenges, J.B. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Cascade failures are events in networked systems with interconnected components in which failure of one or a few parts triggers the failure of other parts, which triggers the failure of more parts, and so on. Cascade failures occur in a wide variety of familiar systems, such as electric power distribution grids, transportation systems, financial systems, and ecosystems. Cascade failures have plagued society for centuries. However, modern social-ecological-technological systems (SETS) have become vast, fast moving, and highly interconnected, exposing these systems to cascade failures of potentially global proportions, spreading at breathtaking speed, and imposing catastrophic harms. The increasing potential for cascade …

What Happens When The Green New Deal Meets The Old Green Laws?, J. B. Ruhl, James Salzman
What Happens When The Green New Deal Meets The Old Green Laws?, J. B. Ruhl, James Salzman
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The multi-faceted infrastructure goals of the Green New Deal will be impossible to achieve in the desired time frames if the existing federal, state, and local siting and environmental protection statutory regimes are applied. Business, labor, property rights, environmental protection, and social justice interests will use them to grind the Green New Deal to a snail's pace. Using the renewable energy transition as the infrastructure case study, this Essay is a call to arms for the need to design New Green Laws for the Green New Deal. Part I briefly summarizes what we are learning about the pace and magnitude …
Our Kardashian Court (And How To Fix It), Suzanna Sherry
Our Kardashian Court (And How To Fix It), Suzanna Sherry
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The Supreme Court is broken. After cataloging its dysfunctions, this Article suggests a contributing cause and proposes a solution. The contributing cause is that Justices have become celebrities, and, like other celebrities, play to their fan base. The solution is to limit their opportunities to use their official status to do so: Congress should pass a law prohibiting concurring or dissenting opinions and requiring each case to be decided by an unsigned opinion that does not disclose the number of Justices who join it. The Article outlines the advantages of such a law and considers possible objections to it, including …

When Mini-Publics And Maxi-Publics Coincide: Ireland’S National Debate On Abortion, David M. Farrell, Jane Suiter, Kevin Cunningham, Clodagh Harris
Other resources
Empirical research on deliberative democracy has moved through a series of stages, the most recent of which has entailed the study of real world deliberative mini-publics – small groups of randomly selected citizens, operating according to deliberative principles (including facilitated small-group discussions) and tasked with considering one or a number of important policy, institutional or constitutional reform issues (e.g. Elstub, 2010, 2014; Goodin & Dryzek, 2006). Among the various forms of DMPs citizens’ assemblies are seen as ‘democratically superior’ (Elstub, 2014, p. 172). As Graham Smith (2009) notes ‘[n]o other randomly selected body has been given the level of influence …

When Mini-Publics And Maxi-Publics Coincide: Ireland’S National Debate On Abortion, David M. Farrell, Jane Suiter, Kevin Cunningham, Clodagh Harris
Articles
Ireland’s Citizens’ Assembly (CA) of 2016–18 was tasked with making recommendations on abortion. This paper shows that from the outset its members were in large part in favour of the liberalisation of abortion (though a fair proportion were undecided), that over the course of its deliberations the CA as a whole moved in a more liberal direction on the issue, but that its position was largely reflected in the subsequent referendum vote by the population as a whole.

Due to the political influence, financial risk, convenient location and panel composition, the Comment proposes CIETAC to be the preferred institution for Chinese BRI …
Pregnancy, Femicide, And The Indispensability Of Legalizing Abortion: A Comparison Between Argentina And Ireland, Agustina M. Buedo
Pregnancy, Femicide, And The Indispensability Of Legalizing Abortion: A Comparison Between Argentina And Ireland, Agustina M. Buedo
Emory International Law Review
On August 9, 2018, after 16 hours of deliberation, Argentina’s senate narrowly rejected the “Interrupción Voluntaria del Embarazo” bill that would have allowed women the right to terminate their pregnancy during the first 14 weeks. Argentine law currently considers abortion a crime with the exception of two narrowly defined circumstances that are rarely applied. The legalization of abortion is vitally important to the women in Argentina who face an increased risk of femicide. Femicide rates in Latin America are among the highest in the world. Femicide can be linked specifically to pregnant women who could not get an abortion and …
