Within weeks of the coronavirus pandemic appearing in the United States, the American economy came to a grinding halt. The unprecedented modern health crisis and the collapsing economy forced Congress to make a critical choice about how to help American families survive financially. Congress had two basic options. It could enact policies that provided direct and meaningful financial support to people, without the necessity of later repayment. Or it could pursue policies that temporarily relieved people from their financial obligations, but required that they eventually pay amounts subject to payment moratoria later.
In passing the CARES Act, Congress primarily chose …

Teaching Im/Migration Through An Ethnographic Portrait Project, Jennifer R. Guzmán, Melanie A. Medeiros, Gwendolyn Faulkner
Anthropology
The Im/migrant Ethnographic Portrait Project was designed for introductory cultural anthropology courses and has a threefold aim: 1) to familiarize students with research methods, 2) to facilitate students’ deeper understanding of migration by connecting course readings with a hands-on project, and 3) to humanize im/migrants by bringing students into one-on-one conversations where they will hear a person’s story in their own words. To support students’ success with this semester-long project and to ensure (as far as is possible) that no harm is done, we provide instruction and feedback through a series of progressive assignments. In this essay we explain each …

Marketing Islamic Financial Services: A Review, Critique, And Agenda For Future Research, Intekhab Alam, Pouya Seifzadeh
School of Business
Islamic finance has experienced rapid growth globally, surpassing the USD 2 trillion mark in 2017. As a result, the literature related to Islamic finance and banking is rather rich. Despite the richness of the literature, our knowledge of the marketing issues related to Islamic finance is modest and somewhat ambiguous. Therefore, we review several decades of research about the Islamic finance in various parts of the world. We identify and discuss three main research themes that draw on different conceptualization and theoretical lenses. After synthesizing their respective findings, we propose several avenues for future research that integrate these three research …
The Impact Of The 2017 Tax Act On Certain Personal Injury Plaintiffs, Gregg Polsky
The Impact Of The 2017 Tax Act On Certain Personal Injury Plaintiffs, Gregg Polsky
Scholarly Works
The 2017 Tax Act was the most sweeping federal tax legislation in over a generation. While many of its reforms, from dramatically lowering the corporate tax rate to altering the international tax rules, have already received significant attention, little attention has been paid to the 2017 Tax Act’s effects on personal injury plaintiffs. This Article explores these impacts.
The 2017 Tax Act added a new provision that indirectly affects plaintiffs who allege sexual harassment or abuse. The new provision disallows the defendants’ deductions in these cases if the parties enter into a nondisclosure agreement. While targeted at defendants, the provision …

Mandatory vaccination programs in the United States are generally successful, but their continued success is under threat. The ever-increasing number of parents who opt their children out of vaccination recommendations has caused severe outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Public health advocates have pushed for changes to state laws, but their efforts have generally been unsuccessful. We suggest that their lack of success is due to public health advocates’ failures to contend with the features of the political system that impede change and to propose reforms that are ethically defensible, efficacious, and politically feasible. Based on our earlier public health studies, ethical …
Investigation Of Asphaltene Adsorption At Liquid-Liquid And Liquid-Solid Interfaces, Fang Liu
Investigation Of Asphaltene Adsorption At Liquid-Liquid And Liquid-Solid Interfaces, Fang Liu
Dissertations and Theses
Asphaltenes, as indigenous components in crude oils, are believed to play an important role in the petroleum production and processing industry. For example, asphaltene molecules can adsorb onto the water / oil interface like the amphiphiles and hinder water droplet coalescence, resulting in the stabilization of water-in-oil emulsions. Also, in the upstream production, depending on the temperature and pressure, asphaltenes can precipitate and deposit onto the reservoir rocks, the wellbores and the pipelines, leading to the change in reservoir rocks’ surface wettability and the blockage of the production facilities. Hence, it is crucial to understand the mechanism of asphaltenes adsorption …
Capillary Forces And Wetting Dynamics By Diffuse-Interface Modeling, Fanny Thomas
Capillary Forces And Wetting Dynamics By Diffuse-Interface Modeling, Fanny Thomas
Dissertations and Theses
Wetting phenomena underlie many natural and industrial processes, from the proper functioning of the lungs to the thin coating of surfaces. The three-phase interactions involved at microscopic scales play a critical role. Adding solid particles to an emulsion, for example, can drastically change the flow behavior due to capillary bridging between the particles. The study of these three-phase systems is especially relevant to the petroleum industry, where gas hydrates forming large clusters in subsea pipelines during crude oil transportation is a major concern. The dynamics of such systems is also of great interest from a fundamental perspective. Indeed describing non-equilibrium …
The Dark Underbellies Of The Littles: A History Of The Indo-Guyanese Diaspora, Race And Identity, Kiran J. Baldeo
The Dark Underbellies Of The Littles: A History Of The Indo-Guyanese Diaspora, Race And Identity, Kiran J. Baldeo
Dissertations and Theses
This historical analysis explores Guyanese immigration to the United States as well as the development of the Indo-Guyanese ethnic enclave, “Little Guyana,” located in Queens, New York. This thesis moves beyond the romanticized image of ethnic enclaves in New York City and argues that while perhaps picturesque on the surface, Little Guyana is the result of the fraught history of British colonialism, slavery, and indentured servitude and the sociocultural resilience of the Indo-Guyanese people. Using Little Guyana as a window onto the Indo-Guyanese American experience this thesis explores the ways in which racial tensions in Guyana have taken shape in …

Kinetics Of Nesquehonite Nucleation, Halla Rezgui
Kinetics Of Nesquehonite Nucleation, Halla Rezgui
Dissertations and Theses
During the nucleation of mineral crystals, the particles (atoms and molecules) will be ordered in a crystal lattice and mineral surfaces will develop. The interfacial energy plays important roles in mineral nucleation. The surface energy can be influenced by many factors including temperature, solution chemistry, ion absorptions, and shape/size of nuclei. Previous research studied the effect of solution stoichiometry on the surface energy between nesquehonite and aqueous solution, which strongly relied on simple assumptions (including shape factors). Our research has sought to provide direct observations and quantify modeling on some of these factors affecting the nucleation of nesquehonite. About 72 …
Political Representation For Indigenous Peoples In The Andes, Jessica Yepez
Political Representation For Indigenous Peoples In The Andes, Jessica Yepez
Dissertations and Theses
For years, there has been a lack of representation for indigenous peoples in communities, and most importantly in parliament. This is a very common trait in the South American Andes, which houses the largest number of indigenous groups in the continent. This thesis focuses on Ecuador and Bolivia due to their indigenous population and their history, or lack thereof, with indigenous people in parliament. For my hypothesis, I argue that parliamentary representation of indigenous peoples, can help ensure that their rights are protected, and their unique interests are heard and translated into relevant policies, while at the same time preventing …

Dissertations and Theses
Abstract
On March 1st, 1896, an Ethiopian army lead by Emperor Menelik II dealt a shocking defeat to the invading Italian forces in the Battle of Adwa. In victory, Menelik was able to exert his authority over a vast territory which included both the historical, ancient kingdoms of the northern and central parts of Ethiopia, and also the vast, resource-rich territories in the west and south which he had earlier conquered. The egalitarian nature of the victory united the various peoples of Ethiopia against a common enemy, giving Menelik the opportunity to create a new Ethiopian nation.

The Epidemiology Of Somatic Depression And Eating Disorders: The Relationship Between Depressive Subtypes And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating, Anita M. Sicignano
The Epidemiology Of Somatic Depression And Eating Disorders: The Relationship Between Depressive Subtypes And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating, Anita M. Sicignano
Dissertations and Theses
Depression is known to affect females in much greater numbers than males, with about three times as many women having the disorder as men (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). A similar gender disparity can be seen in eating disorders, where up to nine in ten sufferers are female (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Studies have shown that most of the gender difference in depression occurs as a result of women experiencing a form of depression involving a number of body-centric symptoms, including headaches, weight changes, fatigue, and insomnia, which has been termed “somatic depression” (Silverstein et al., 2013). Some of the symptoms, …
The Process Of Cultural Appropriation In Literature And How It Can Be Changed, Wendy Meza
The Process Of Cultural Appropriation In Literature And How It Can Be Changed, Wendy Meza
Dissertations and Theses
This paper explores the ways cultural appropriation has existed in literature from the time of Sylvia Plath's poem "Daddy" to the present, with the publication of Jeanine Cummins's novel American Dirt. After dissecting the motives behind the exploitation of traumatic events and acknowledging the consequences appropriation has on the individuals it is portraying, the inclusion of NoViolet Bulawayo's novel We Need New Names proposes a way for contemporary literature to revolve around cultures without silencing voices and allowing individual identities to shine in the texts.

Lps, A Tlr-4 Agonist And Viper A Tlr-4 Inhibitor Upregulate Phagocytosis Of Zymosan In Bv2 Cells, Sherouk Alzeory
Dissertations and Theses
Microglia cells are the first line of innate immunity defense in the central nervous system (CNS). They play a critical role in maintaining CNS homeostasis by having an active but yet balanced phagocytic activity. However, in various CNS related diseases, microglia cells have been shown to malfunction. In Alzheimer's Disease (AD), hyperactive microglia with impaired phagocytic activity is the main hallmark of this disease, along with the accumulation of amyloid-beta aggregates. Additionally, emerging new studies have suggested a fungal infection etiology to AD, specifically in relation to Candida albicans (C.albicans). Thus, understanding the mechanism of fungal clearance in the …
Free-To-Play? An Examination Of Intrinsic Motivation And Gaming Behaviors In U.S. Female Mobile Gamers, Margot Goldblum
Free-To-Play? An Examination Of Intrinsic Motivation And Gaming Behaviors In U.S. Female Mobile Gamers, Margot Goldblum
Dissertations and Theses
The prevalence of U.S. female gamers has skyrocketed in recent years, largely due to the popularity of mobile games; however, this population is underrepresented in academic research. The present study aimed to close this gap in the literature by focusing on the motivations and behaviors of adult female mobile gamers in the U.S. It also aimed to capture changes in gaming motivation and behavior resulting from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. An online sample of 354 American women 18 to 77 years of age (M = 36.79, SD = 12.38) were surveyed about their motivations for mobile gaming, …

More Than Meets The Eye: A Taxonomic Revision Of The Nearctic Species In The Eye-Gnat Genus Amiota Loew (Diptera: Drosophilidae), Lance E. Jones
Dissertations and Theses
Thorough biotic inventories are still needed even in families as seemingly well-studied as fruit flies (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Drosophilidae have had an outsize effect on the history of biology because of their pivotal role in the study of genetics, development, and evolution. Even with more than a century of intensive study, large gaps remain in our understanding of diversity in this fly family, including well-studied areas such as North America. This thesis presents a taxonomic revision of the Nearctic species of the genus Amiota Loew. Twenty-three species are identified as being new to science for publication at a later date. This …
Mindfulness As A Moderator Of The Relation Between Acculturative Stress And Body Dissatisfaction/Eating Disorder Symptoms In Latinx Students, Ariana J. Mackson
Mindfulness As A Moderator Of The Relation Between Acculturative Stress And Body Dissatisfaction/Eating Disorder Symptoms In Latinx Students, Ariana J. Mackson
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to test the theory that mindfulness is an effective coping strategy for reducing acculturative stress and body dissatisfaction/eating disorder symptoms. It was hypothesized that acculturative stress would be associated with more body dissatisfaction/eating disorder symptoms, but this relation was expected to be moderated by mindfulness. It was also predicted that mindfulness would be associated with less acculturative stress and less body dissatisfaction/eating disorder symptoms. Thirty-eight Latinx students were recruited from The City College of New York, CUNY, through the web-based survey participation pool SONA. Participants answered questions assessing their levels of acculturative stress, mindfulness, …

Does Resilience Moderate The Impact Of Children’S Experiences Of Racial And Ethnic Discrimination On Internalizing Problems?, Dahlia Abbas
Dissertations and Theses
This study’s objectives were to investigate how children’s experiences of discrimination impact the severity of their internalizing symptoms, and whether the relation between discrimination and internalizing symptom severity is moderated by resilience. It was predicted that children who had experienced more discrimination would have more severe internalizing symptoms, especially when they have low levels of resilience. Children [N=20; Mean (SD) age= 11.83 (2.50)] receiving low-cost music lessons in northern Manhattan were recruited into a larger study examining how learning music affects cognitive and emotional development. Children were interviewed in-person about experiences of discrimination because of their race/ethnicity using the Perceptions …
Ftir Analysis Of Bacteria Biomass-Mineral Interactions In Soils, Finola Fung-Khee
Ftir Analysis Of Bacteria Biomass-Mineral Interactions In Soils, Finola Fung-Khee
Dissertations and Theses
Soil organic carbon (SOC) accounts for 70% of the carbon on Earth. It is therefore a key player in global carbon cycling and climate change (Smith et al., 2008). Soil organic matter (SOM) is an important component of organic matter in soils (SOC), and results from biogeochemical process involving net primary producers, soil biomass and soil mineralogy (Horwath and Kuzyakov, 2018). In this study, the interplay between soil bacterial biomass and reactive clay minerals in soils was investigated. The purpose of the research was to shed light into the stabilization of SOC in a bacterial biomass-soil/clay matrix. Soils characterized as …
Reductions By Cobalt-Catalyzed Production Of Hydrogen Gas From Nabh4 In A Two-Chamber System, Joshua K. Mitchell
Reductions By Cobalt-Catalyzed Production Of Hydrogen Gas From Nabh4 In A Two-Chamber System, Joshua K. Mitchell
Dissertations and Theses
The work outlined in this thesis describes a bench-scale methodology involving a two-chamber system for conducting catalytic hydrogenation reactions by obtaining hydrogen (H2) gas from stable sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Whereas NaBH4 is widely used for a variety of reductions and is known to produce H2 gas in protic media, to our knowledge, there has been scant use of NaBH4 in catalytic hydrogenation chemistry where it has been used as a source of H2 gas. In this work, addition of a catalytic amount of CoCl2•6H2O as an aqueous solution …
Attention Strongly Modulates Reliability Of Neural Response To Naturalistic Narrative Stimuli, Jason Ki
Attention Strongly Modulates Reliability Of Neural Response To Naturalistic Narrative Stimuli, Jason Ki
Dissertations and Theses
Attentional engagement is a major determinant of how effectively we gather information through our senses. Alongside the sheer growth in the amount and variety of information content we are presented with through modern media, there is increased variability in the degree to which we ‘absorb’ that information. Traditional research on attention has illuminated the basic principles of sensory selection to isolated features or locations, but it provides little insight into the neural underpinnings of our attentional engagement with modern naturalistic content. Here, we show in human subjects that the reliability of an individual's neural responses with respect to a larger …
Using Statistical Learning Approaches To Understand Trends And Variability Of Tornadoes Across The Continental United States, Niloufar Nouri
Using Statistical Learning Approaches To Understand Trends And Variability Of Tornadoes Across The Continental United States, Niloufar Nouri
Dissertations and Theses
The annual frequency of tornadoes during 1950-2018 across the major tornado-impacted states were examined and modeled using anthropogenic and large-scale climate covariates in a hierarchical Bayesian inference framework. Anthropogenic factors include increases in population density and better detection systems since the mid-1990s. Large-scale climate variables include El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), and Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). The model provides a robust way of estimating the response coefficients by considering pooling of information across groups of states that belong to Tornado Alley, Dixie Alley, and Other …
Motion Of Janus And Patchy Particles Near Various Boundaries, Zohreh Jalilvand
Motion Of Janus And Patchy Particles Near Various Boundaries, Zohreh Jalilvand
Dissertations and Theses
Colloidal particles with anisotropic surface properties are an emergent class of novel materials that have been indicated to possess a remarkable potential to still be fully exploited. Among anisotropic colloids, Janus and patchy particles with different compositions and functionalities recently have drawn significant attention in the field of colloid science. They are known as promising candidates to address challenges in various fields such as emulsion stabilization, oil recovery, drug delivery, biosensors and environmental remediation. A majority of the envisioned applications require Janus and patchy particles to operate near boundaries, i.e., a wall or a fluid/liquid interface, which significantly affect the …
An Empirical Analysis Of Company Culture: Using Glassdoor Data To Measure The Impact Of Culture And Employee Satisfaction On Performance, Linnea Uyeno
CMC Senior Theses
This paper examines the impact of culture and employee satisfaction on company performance; it considers which elements of culture are most important in specific industries: manufacturing, technology, and finance. Additionally, it explores whether these elements of productive cultures are also associated with employee satisfaction. It uses data from the MIT Sloan Management Review/Glassdoor Culture 500 database, which applied machine learning to analyze 1.2 million Glassdoor reviews. This data quantitatively measures nine dimensions of culture: agility, collaboration, customer focus, diversity, execution, innovation, integrity performance, and respect—assigning each company a score for every cultural dimension. Two dependent variables are used to measure …
Investigating The Municipal Nudge Unit: How Behavioral Interventions Have Quietly Emerged And Made Their Mark On American Cities, Melanie Wolfe
Investigating The Municipal Nudge Unit: How Behavioral Interventions Have Quietly Emerged And Made Their Mark On American Cities, Melanie Wolfe
CMC Senior Theses
Since Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein published Nudge in 2008, policy makers and behavioral economists have applied their theory of behavioral interventions in offices called nudge units across the world. In the U.S., three models of operating nudge units have emerged in cities, and their work helps generate revenue and improve the welfare of citizens. However, the limited media attention and academic analysis dedicated to municipal nudge units has left many unresolved questions about the ethical implications and empirical challenges associated with government-sponsored behavioral interventions. Analyzing the behavioral design teams in New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia reveals a lack …
An Examination Of How The Canadian Military’S Legal System Responds To Sexual Assault, Elaine Craig
An Examination Of How The Canadian Military’S Legal System Responds To Sexual Assault, Elaine Craig
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Although the Canadian military has been conducting sexual assault trials for over twenty years, there has been no academic study of them and no external review of them. This review of the military’s sexual assault cases (the first of its kind) yields several important findings. First, the conviction rate for the offence of sexual assault by courts martial is dramatically lower than the rate in Canada’s civilian criminal courts. The difference between acquittal rates in sexual assault cases in these two systems appears to be even larger. Since Operation Honour was launched in 2015 only one soldier has been convicted …

Towards An Analyses Of The Mega-Politics Jurisprudence Of The Ecowas Community Court Of Justice, Olabisi D. Akinkugbe
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The judicialization of mega-political disputes before the ECOWAS Community Court is understudied. The ECOWAS Community Court lacks express mandate to adjudicate over political disputes. Despite this limitation, the court has been innovative in assuming jurisdiction over mega-political disputes where they are intertwined with potential or actual human rights violation. The Ugokwe Doctrine, enunciated in the case of, Dr. Jerry Ugokwe v. The Federal Republic of Nigeria and Dr. Christian Okeke, provides the precedential ‘cause of action’ for the judicialization of mega-political disputes before the ECOWAS Community Court. This chapter addresses this new body of jurisprudence by critically analyzing judicialized political …
