The Impact Of Parent Training On Access To Care For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Rian Brown-Beasley
Graduate Theses & Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that impacts communication and behavior. Parents of children with ASD have the difficult challenge to identify appropriate treatment to address their children’s needs. There are unproven treatments that appeal to parents that can cause harm. Parents need targeted educational opportunities in evidence-based interventions such as Applied Behavior Analysis to foster positive outcomes for their children. The purpose of this study was to determine baseline parental knowledge of evidence-based intervention for children with ASD and if specialized parent training increased parental knowledge of ASD interventions, and to determine socioeconomic status was a factor …

The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin
The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Germany’s acceptance of its direct responsibility for the Holocaust has strengthened its relationship with Israel and has led to a deep commitment to combat antisemitism and rebuild Jewish life in Germany. As we draw close to a time when there will be no more firsthand experience of the horrors of the Holocaust, there is great concern about what will happen when German responsibility turns into history. Will the present taboo against open antisemitism be lifted as collective memory fades? There are alarming signs of the rise of the far right, which includes blatantly antisemitic elements, already visible in public discourse. …

The Student Loan Bankruptcy Gap, Jason Iuliano
The Student Loan Bankruptcy Gap, Jason Iuliano
Duke Law Journal
Each year, a quarter of a million student loan debtors file for bankruptcy. Of those, fewer than three hundred discharge their educational debt. That is a success rate of just 0.1 percent. This chasm between success and failure is the titular “Student Loan Bankruptcy Gap,” and it is a phenomenon that is unprecedented in the law.
Drawing upon an original dataset of nearly five hundred adversary proceedings, this Article examines three key facets of the Student Loan Bankruptcy Gap. First, it establishes the true breadth of the gap. Second, it explores why the gap has persisted for more than two …
From Overdose To Crime Scene: The Incompatibility Of Drug-Induced Homicide Statutes With Due Process, Kaitlin S. Phillips
From Overdose To Crime Scene: The Incompatibility Of Drug-Induced Homicide Statutes With Due Process, Kaitlin S. Phillips
Duke Law Journal
As the opioid epidemic ravages the United States, federal and state legislators continue to seek various ways to mitigate the crisis. Though public health advocates have successfully pushed for harm-reduction initiatives, a contrasting punitive response has emerged. Across the country, prosecutors and legislators are turning to drug-induced homicide (“DIH”) statutes as a law-and-order response to the crisis. DIH statutes, which can carry sentences as severe as life in prison, impose criminal liability on anyone who provided drugs that led to a fatal overdose. Though DIH laws are often justified as tools to target large-scale drug distributors, in reality, they more …

Lightning-Fast And Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Computation In The Cloud, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Pengfei Wu, Yang Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a framework for lightning-fast privacy-preserving outsourced computation framework in the cloud, which we refer to as LightCom. Using LightCom, a user can securely achieve the outsource data storage and fast, secure data processing in a single cloud server different from the existing multi-server outsourced computation model. Specifically, we first present a general secure computation framework for LightCom under the cloud server equipped with multiple Trusted Processing Units (TPUs), which face the side-channel attack. Under the LightCom, we design two specified fast processing toolkits, which allow the user to achieve the commonly-used secure integer computation and …
Debunking Rumors On Twitter With Tree Transformer, Jing Ma, Wei Gao
Debunking Rumors On Twitter With Tree Transformer, Jing Ma, Wei Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rumors are manufactured with no respect for accuracy, but can circulate quickly and widely by "word-of-post" through social media conversations. Conversation tree encodes important information indicative of the credibility of rumor. Existing conversation-based techniques for rumor detection either just strictly follow tree edges or treat all the posts fully-connected during feature learning. In this paper, we propose a novel detection model based on tree transformer to better utilize user interactions in the dialogue where post-level self-attention plays the key role for aggregating the intra-/inter-subtree stances. Experimental results on the TWITTER and PHEME datasets show that the proposed approach consistently improves …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Modeling the structure of culinary recipes is the core of recipe representation learning. Current approaches mostly focus on extracting the workflow graph from recipes based on text descriptions. Process images, which constitute an important part of cooking recipes, has rarely been investigated in recipe structure modeling. We study this recipe structure problem from a multi-modal learning perspective, by proposing a prerequisite tree to represent recipes with cooking images at a step-level granularity. We propose a simple-yet-effective two-stage framework to automatically construct the prerequisite tree for a recipe by (1) utilizing a trained classifier to detect pairwise prerequisite relations that fuses …

Security Analysis Of Permission Re-Delegation Vulnerabilities In Android Apps, Biniam Fisseha Demissie, Mariano Ceccato, Lwin Khin Shar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Android platform facilitates reuse of app functionalities by allowing an app to request an action from another app through inter-process communication mechanism. This feature is one of the reasons for the popularity of Android, but it also poses security risks to the end users because malicious, unprivileged apps could exploit this feature to make privileged apps perform privileged actions on behalf of them. In this paper, we investigate the hybrid use of program analysis, genetic algorithm based test generation, natural language processing, machine learning techniques for precise detection of permission re-delegation vulnerabilities in Android apps. Our approach first groups …
Sharper Generalisation Bounds For Pairwise Learning, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft
Sharper Generalisation Bounds For Pairwise Learning, Yunwen Lei, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Pairwise learning refers to learning tasks with loss functions depending on a pair of training examples, which includes ranking and metric learning as specific examples. Recently, there has been an increasing amount of attention on the generalization analysis of pairwise learning to understand its practical behavior. However, the existing stability analysis provides suboptimal high-probability generalization bounds. In this paper, we provide a refined stability analysis by developing generalization bounds which can be √nn-times faster than the existing results, where nn is the sample size. This implies excess risk bounds of the order O(n−1/2) (up to a logarithmic factor) for both …

A Near-Optimal Change-Detection Based Algorithm For Piecewise-Stationary Combinatorial Semi-Bandits, Huozhi Zhou, Lingda Wang, Lav N. Varshney, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We investigate the piecewise-stationary combinatorial semi-bandit problem. Compared to the original combinatorial semi-bandit problem, our setting assumes the reward distributions of base arms may change in a piecewise-stationary manner at unknown time steps. We propose an algorithm, GLR-CUCB, which incorporates an efficient combinatorial semi-bandit algorithm, CUCB, with an almost parameter-free change-point detector, the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT). Our analysis shows that the regret of GLR-CUCB is upper bounded by O(√NKT logT), where N is the number of piecewise-stationary segments, K is the number of base arms, and T is the number of time steps. As a complement, we also …
Understanding The Professional Experiences Of White Jewish Women In Higher Education: An Intrinsic Case Study Analysis, Janna M. Bernstein
Understanding The Professional Experiences Of White Jewish Women In Higher Education: An Intrinsic Case Study Analysis, Janna M. Bernstein
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The exploration of female professionals’ experiences within the realm of higher education is steadily increasing, yet researchers have yet to analyze, much less include, Jewish women. Following a qualitative intrinsic case study approach, this study assesses the lived experiences of ten white Jewish women professionals to better understand how they engage in the world of higher education differently than their non-Jewish counterparts. Using racial formation theory and intersectional analysis as theoretical frameworks, the research examined the current and historical literature on Jewish identity, the role of Jews and Jewish women in higher education, and the relevant methodological research. The study …

Arranged Marriage, Partner Traits And Parental Investment: Examining The Reproductive Compensation Hypothesis In Humans, Annemarie M. Hasnain
Arranged Marriage, Partner Traits And Parental Investment: Examining The Reproductive Compensation Hypothesis In Humans, Annemarie M. Hasnain
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Both sexes choose mates based on qualities that will enhance offspring viability and quality. In some cases individuals are forced to reproduce with less desirable mates which has been shown to result in lower quality offspring. The Reproductive Compensation Hypothesis (RCH) predicts that parents who mate under constraint will increase their reproductive effort and investment in offspring to compensate for lowered offspring viability. Evidence for the RCH has been found in several animal species; however it has not been examined in humans. One possible type of mate choice constraint in humans is that of arranged marriage in which parents or …
Unsupervised Structural Graph Node Representation Learning, Mikel Joaristi
Unsupervised Structural Graph Node Representation Learning, Mikel Joaristi
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Unsupervised Graph Representation Learning methods learn a numerical representation of the nodes in a graph. The generated representations encode meaningful information about the nodes' properties, making them a powerful tool for tasks in many areas of study, such as social sciences, biology or communication networks. These methods are particularly interesting because they facilitate the direct use of standard Machine Learning models on graphs. Graph representation learning methods can be divided into two main categories depending on the information they encode, methods preserving the nodes connectivity information, and methods preserving nodes' structural information. Connectivity-based methods focus on encoding relationships between nodes, …
Constitutive Modeling Of Force-Controlled Fatigue Testing In Human Meniscus Tissue, Bradley Scott Henderson
Constitutive Modeling Of Force-Controlled Fatigue Testing In Human Meniscus Tissue, Bradley Scott Henderson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The meniscus is a wedge-shaped fibrocartilaginous tissue located between the femur and tibia that helps stabilize the knee and protect the underlying cartilage. There are 2.5 million reported knee injuries each year, making it the most injured joint in the human body. Nearly twenty percent of these injuries are due to a torn meniscus, leading to over half a million meniscus surgeries performed in the United States annually. Therefore, it is critical to understand the failure modes of meniscus tissue to prevent these debilitating injuries. A failure mode that accounts for one-third of all meniscus injuries is repeated exposure to …

In-Situ Fluid Injections To Achieve Bio-Stimulated Calcite Precipitation In Expansive Soils, Anish Pathak
In-Situ Fluid Injections To Achieve Bio-Stimulated Calcite Precipitation In Expansive Soils, Anish Pathak
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Expansive soils undergo vast changes in volume when subject to change in water contents and cause damages to infrastructures across the world. Traditional methods of tackling the problem of expansive soils using cement or lime are environmentally unfriendly and expensive. Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) is a new method which uses bacteria in the soil to precipitate CaCO3 (calcite) and improve the engineering properties of soils. Various laboratory studies have shown that this method can be applied successfully to treat expansive soils, but the field application of the method have barely been studied.
To study the applicability of MICP in …
Understanding Mesoscopic Chemo-Mechanical Distress And Mitigation Mechanisms Of Concrete Subject To Asr, Md Asif Rahman
Understanding Mesoscopic Chemo-Mechanical Distress And Mitigation Mechanisms Of Concrete Subject To Asr, Md Asif Rahman
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is one of the common sources of concrete damage worldwide. The surrounding environment, namely, temperature and humidity greatly influence the alkali-silica reaction induced expansion. Global warming (GW) has caused frequent change in the climate and initiated extreme weather events in recent years. These extreme events anticipate random change in temperature and humidity, and convey potential threats to the concrete infrastructure. Moreover, external loading conditions also affect the service life of concrete. Thus, complex mechanisms of ASR under the impact of seasonal change and global warming require a precise quantitative assessment to guide the durable infrastructure materials design …

Rural populations in the United States are faced with a variety of health disparities that complicate access to care. Community health workers (CHWs) and their Spanish-speaking counterparts, promotores de salud, are well-equipped to address rural health access issues, provide education, and ultimately assuage these disparities. In this article, we compare community health workers in the states of Indiana and Texas, based on the results of two separate research studies, in order to (1) investigate the unique role of CHWs in rural communities and (2) understand how their advocacy efforts represent a central form of caregiving. Drawing on ethnographic, qualitative data—including …
