Vanishing Relaxation Time Dynamics Of The Jordan Moore-Gibson-Thompson (Jmgt) Equation Arising In High Frequency Ultrasound (Hfu), Sutthirut Charoenphon
Vanishing Relaxation Time Dynamics Of The Jordan Moore-Gibson-Thompson (Jmgt) Equation Arising In High Frequency Ultrasound (Hfu), Sutthirut Charoenphon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The (third-order in time) JMGT equation is a nonlinear (quasilinear) Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model introduced to describe the acoustic velocity potential in ultrasound wave propagation. One begins with the parabolic Westervelt equation governing the dynamics of the pressure in nonlinear acoustic waves. In its derivation from constitutive laws, one then replaces the Fourier law with the Maxwell-Cattaneo law, to avoid the paradox of the infinite speed of propagation. This process then gives rise to a new third time derivative term, with a small constant coefficient $\tau$, referred to as relaxation time. As a consequence, the mathematical structure of the …
Value Estimation Of Software Functional Test Cases, Yao Shi
Value Estimation Of Software Functional Test Cases, Yao Shi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Software testing is becoming more and more critical to ensure that software will function properly in the production environment. Consequently, the effort, time, and funds invested in software testing activities have been increased significantly. However, these resources cannot meet the increasing demand of software testing. As such, managers have to allocate testing resources to the test cases that are more critical to uncover defects. This study builds a value function that can quantify the value of a test case and thus provide an approach in selecting key functional test cases. Following the guidance of case study research and using an …

High throughput genome screening techniques are enabling researchers to interrogate human genome at single base pair level for their association with outcomes by genome wide association study (GWAS). However, it is usually challenging for GWAS to provide clear statistical conclusions at the gene level when multiple genomic features, either from same platform or different platforms, reside in the same gene. Traditionally a gene is considered as associated with an outcome when at least one genome feature within that gene is significantly associated with the outcome after adjusting for multiple genome-wide tests. Under that framework, only the most significant genome feature …

Rethinking Animal Models Of Sepsis – Working Towards Improved Clinical Translation Whilst Integrating The 3rs, Manasi Nandi, Simon K. Jackson, Duncan Macrae, Manu Shankar-Hari, Jordi L. Tremoleda, Elliot Lilley
School of Biomedical Sciences
Abstract Sepsis is a major worldwide healthcare issue with unmet clinical need. Despite extensive animal research in this area, successful clinical translation has been largely unsuccessful. We propose one reason for this is that, sometimes, the experimental question is misdirected or unrealistic expectations are being made of the animal model. As sepsis models can lead to a rapid and substantial suffering – it is essential that we continually review experimental approaches and undertake a full harm:benefit impact assessment for each study. In some instances, this may require refinement of existing sepsis models. In other cases, it may be replacement to …

Emulsion Stability Of Heavy Oil With Surfactants And Nanoparticles, Zainab Abdulmohsein, Baojun Bai, Parthasakha Neogi
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The recovered crude oil is often in form of an emulsion and the recovery is cut off when water to oil ratio exceeds a certain amount. The emulsions vary from water-in-oil to oil-in-water and the step that follows is to coalesce droplets to get two continuous liquids. Difficulties arise when the oil contains emulsifiers. There are naturally occurring surfactants, or the oil recovered is by enhanced oil recovery techniques which have additives that stabilize the droplets. We have considered below a heavy oil (viscosity 650-750 mPa.s) containing one of the three surfactants: a nonionic surfactant or a cationic surfactant or …

Soil Fatigue From Induced Seismicity, Merissa L. Zuzulock, Oliver Denzil S. Taylor, Norbert H. Maerz
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Induced seismicity and the effects on civil engineering systems are not completely understood and infrequently studied. One specific area that is not well known is soil fatigue which includes factors such as understanding the natural conditions of the subsurface as well as operational parameters under short duration impulse loads. With the increase of Geo induced seismic activity, soil fatigue becomes of greater concern to structures in the vicinity of this seismic load. The foundations of these structures can be affected by impulse loads which can ultimately cause failure. The lack of quantitative data puts the reliability of these civil engineering …

Herein, evidence for the long-sought finite hyperfine interaction in the high-pressure hexagonal close-packed ε-iron is gained through synchrotron radiation perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy. This method yields an energy splitting of 3.5(5)neV between the mIe= ± 1/2 and mIe = ± 3/2 nuclear sublevels of the iron-57 14.412-keV nuclear excited state at 30(1)GPa and room temperature. This energy splitting is related to a nuclear quadrupole hyperfine interaction with an electric field gradient of eq=1.2(2) x 1016V/cm2. However, there is still a possibility that the splitting of the iron-57 nuclear levels is related …

Coordinated Container Migration And Base Station Handover In Mobile Edge Computing, Mao V. Ngo, Tie Luo, Hieu T. Hoang, Q. S. Tony Quek
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Offloading computationally intensive tasks from mobile users (MUs) to a virtualized environment such as containers on a nearby edge server, can significantly reduce processing time and hence end-to-end (E2E) delay. However, when users are mobile, such containers need to be migrated to other edge servers located closer to the MUs to keep the E2E delay low. Meanwhile, the mobility of MUs necessitates handover among base stations in order to keep the wireless connections between MUs and base stations uninterrupted. In this paper, we address the joint problem of container migration and base-station handover by proposing a coordinated migration-handover mechanism, with …

Festivals As A Sustainable Development Tool: Case Study Of Teriberka, Russia, Maria Monakhova
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Sustainable development refers to positive economic, social, and environment changes brought both locally and globally, creating a better world for individuals and future generations. Sustainable development in the Arctic shares the same approach, yet the smallness and remoteness of the Arctic regions often present a challenge to its implementation (Larsen & Huskey, 2015). I believe that the remarkable beauty, culture, history, and geography of these territories may generate positive returns for sustainable development through the organization of festivals. This paper examines the Teriberka festival taking place in a small same-name village in the Russian Arctic. The questions raised are what …

A Novel Data-Driven Scheme For The Ship Wake Identification On The 2-D Dynamic Sea Surface, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang
A Novel Data-Driven Scheme For The Ship Wake Identification On The 2-D Dynamic Sea Surface, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Because the ship wake spreads into an area much larger than that of the ship hull in the sea surface, it has been widely used in the ship detection. However, due to the complex sea wave motion and the high sea state, the ship wake detection is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven method based on dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to detect, reconstruct, and locate the Kelvin wake on the two-dimensional dynamic sea surface. Through the proposed method, the sea's dynamic characteristics including the oscillation frequency and decay/growth rate of ship wakes and the …

A Solar‐Driven Membrane‐Based Water Desalination/Purification System, Abdellah Shafieian Dastjerdi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Lack of fresh water has turned into one of the major challenges of the world in the present century. Desalination of brackish or seawater has been proven to be one of the best solutions to cope with this global challenge. Among all the desalination methods, Membrane Distillation (MD) is well known as a cost effective and profitable technology for treating saline water. However, higher energy consumption compared to other separation techniques has been reported as MD’s main drawback. That is why the application of solar energy to provide the thermal energy requirement of MD modules has been the focal point …

A Study Into The Effects Of Spray And Jet Characteristics On Flash Evaporation System, Farshid Fathinia
A Study Into The Effects Of Spray And Jet Characteristics On Flash Evaporation System, Farshid Fathinia
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Low temperature flash evaporation desalination is a separation system that isolates liquids from other materials when seawater or any fluid undergoes evaporation. Extreme flash evaporation occurs when a low heated liquid is injected into the vacuum area, where the pressure is far below the saturated pressure of the liquid entering the area. This approach of flash evaporation is a key part of this type of system. It has a great potential to develop and improve the implementation of low thermal desalination plants but requires more specific study. Further analysis shows that previous investigations have not given a comprehensive insight into …
The Integration Of Pumped Hydro Storage Systems Into Pv Microgrids In Rural Areas, Navid Mousavi
The Integration Of Pumped Hydro Storage Systems Into Pv Microgrids In Rural Areas, Navid Mousavi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Photovoltaic (PV) systems are popular in rural areas because they provide low cost and clean electricity for homes and irrigation systems. The primary challenge of PV systems is their intermittent nature. The typical solution is storing energy in batteries; however, they are expensive and possess a short lifespan. This research proposes a new type of pumped hydro storage (PHS) which can be implemented as an alternative to batteries. The components of the system are modelled to consider losses of the system accurately. The mathematic model developed in this project assists the management system to make more efficient decisions. The proposed …
Wildfire Suppression – An International Analysis Of Operations, Strategy And Firefighter Safety, Greg Peter Penney
Wildfire Suppression – An International Analysis Of Operations, Strategy And Firefighter Safety, Greg Peter Penney
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Wildfire suppression remains an inherently dangerous yet increasingly frequent task for fire services throughout Australia and the world. Each year firefighters from career and volunteer agencies respond to wildfires that impact the urban interface. When such an event occurs during a period of intense fire behaviour the conditions are often incompatible with life for persons either caught in the open or those seeking refuge in a vehicle. In order to improve firefighter safety and operational effectiveness at the rural urban interface (RUI) during landscape scale wildfires, this dissertation serves to examine critical components of wildfire response, most notably wildfire suppression …
Local Binary Pattern Based Algorithms For The Discrimination And Detection Of Crops And Weeds With Similar Morphologies, Vi Nguyen Thanh Le
Local Binary Pattern Based Algorithms For The Discrimination And Detection Of Crops And Weeds With Similar Morphologies, Vi Nguyen Thanh Le
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In cultivated agricultural fields, weeds are unwanted species that compete with the crop plants for nutrients, water, sunlight and soil, thus constraining their growth. Applying new real-time weed detection and spraying technologies to agriculture would enhance current farming practices, leading to higher crop yields and lower production costs. Various weed detection methods have been developed for Site-Specific Weed Management (SSWM) aimed at maximising the crop yield through efficient control of weeds. Blanket application of herbicide chemicals is currently the most popular weed eradication practice in weed management and weed invasion. However, the excessive use of herbicides has a detrimental impact …

Cyber-Security Constrained Placement Of Facts Devices In Power Networks From A Novel Topological Perspective, Hossein Parastvand, Octavian Bass, Mohammad A. S. Masoum, Airlie Chapman, Stefan Lachowicz
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Optimal placement of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices and the cyber-security of associated data exchange are crucial for the controllability of wide area power networks. The placement of FACTS devices is studied in this paper from a novel graph theoretic perspective, which unlike the existing approaches, purely relies on topological characteristics of the underlying physical graphs of power networks. To this end, the maximum matching principle (MMP) is used to find the set of required FACTS devices for the grid controllability. In addition, the cyber-security of the most critical data related to the FACTS controllers is guaranteed by introducing …
