Less Is More: On The Importance Of Data Quality For Unit Test Generation, Junwei Zhang, Xing Hu, Shan Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unit testing is crucial for software development and maintenance. Effective unit testing ensures and improves software quality, but writing unit tests is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Recent studies have proposed deep learning (DL) techniques or large language models (LLMs) to automate unit test generation. These models are usually trained or fine-tuned on large-scale datasets. Despite growing awareness of the importance of data quality, there has been limited research on the quality of datasets used for test generation. To bridge this gap, we systematically examine the impact of noise on the performance of learning-based test generation models. We first apply the open …

Adapting Large Language Models For Parameter-Efficient Log Anomaly Detection, Ying Fu Lim, Jiawen Zhu, Guansong Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Log Anomaly Detection (LAD) seeks to identify atypical patterns in log data that are crucial to assessing the security and condition of systems. Although Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown tremendous success in various fields, the use of LLMs in enabling the detection of log anomalies is largely unexplored. This work aims to fill this gap. Due to the prohibitive costs involved in fully fine-tuning LLMs,we explore the use of parameter-efficient fine-tuning techniques (PEFTs) for adapting LLMs to LAD.To have an in-depth exploration of the potential of LLM-driven LAD, we present a comprehensive investigation of leveraging two of the most …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Identifying logical fallacies is essential for maintaining log-ical reasoning and reducing false information in a variety of domains, such as the media, law, and education. We present an extensive study on the use of large language models (LLMs) for logical fallacy detection and provide a comparative overview of model performance across various fallacy classes. We evaluate the logical fallacy detection capabilities of multiple state-of-the-art models (LLaMA, Qwen, Gemma, Phi) utilizing accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score as assessment measures. Accord-ing to our findings, our models do well on simple fallacies like “circular reasoning,” but they have trouble with more interpretive reasoning …

Data Driven Analysis Of Samara Seed Kinematics And Dynamics, Shashwat Sparsh

Master's Theses

Samara Seeds are a class of fruit most famously belonging to the Acer species and are characterized by their single-bladed geometry and their auto-rotation response during descent. This steady-state auto-rotation response is the subject of aerodynamic analysis which aim to quantify the performance. The period prior to the beginning of steady-state auto-rotation is classified as the transition regime and has not been the subject of intense scrutiny.

This thesis employs a data-driven approach to analyzing the kinematic and dynamic response of these seeds during both the transition and auto-rotation stages of flight to quantify the performance with respect to the …

Spatial And Functional Metrics For Analyzing Seedling Roots, Irina Ivchenko Jun 2025

Spatial And Functional Metrics For Analyzing Seedling Roots, Irina Ivchenko

Master's Theses

To study the complicated structure of a maestro pea seedling root, we investigate three spatial metrics and one functional metric. The spatial metrics are fractal dimension which measures the complexity, convex hull area which measures the occupied space, and Euler characteristic which topologically describes the shape of the root. We discuss the successes of various metrics and the possible limitations they bring to analysis. As a functional metric, we study the rhizosphere: the volume radially around the root branches from which the plant accesses nutrients and water. We investigate the relationship of the rhizosphere to the root, and propose how …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Topic modeling and LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) have proven valuable in various fields as an innovative approach to studying areas of interest and identifying topics in a dynamic content. The underlying assumption is that techniques like LDA can swiftly capture emerging topics in textual documents compared to other categorization tools. These unsupervised approaches have been used to identify new industries and technological domains. However, our study on the nascent topic of “sustainability” within the corpora of SGX-listed companies highlights clear limitations in employing techniques like LDA on sparse data. The dynamic LDA approach, also called DTM (Dynamic Topic Modelling),based on …

Welfare Implication Of Alternative Tax Rates Adjustment Policy In Nigeria: A Dsge Analysis, Umar B. Ibrahim, Isah F. Abubakar

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study sets out to determine the desirable policy adjustment in the tax rate for Nigeria that ensures the least welfare cost. A calibrated small open-economy New Keynesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (NKDSGE) model of the Nigerian economy is applied to achieve this objective. Within this framework, we examined the impact of an increase in value-added tax (VAT) rate from 7.5 to 15 percent on key macroeconomic variables relative to the impact of an increase in company income tax (CIT) rate from 30 to 35 percent on macroeconomic variables. Furthermore, we examined the welfare costs of the increases in the …

Adaptive Expectation, News Impact And Lending Rate Behaviour In Nigeria: Evidence From Garch Models, Innocent Chile Nzeh

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study investigates how adaptive expectations and news impact shape lending rate behavior in Nigeria within the framework of both symmetric and asymmetric GARCH models. Using monthly data spanning 2006M1 to 2024M5, the paper analyzes the persistence, volatility, and responsiveness of the prime lending rate to positive and negative news shocks. Three error distributions (Normal, Student’s t, and Generalized Error Distribution (GED)) were employed to ensure robust estimation. The findings reveal that, in all models, the recent past value of the prime lending rate has a positive and sig nificant impact on the current value, indicating the presence of adaptive …

Relative Price Changes And Monetary Policy Stance In Nigeria, Elijah A. Udoh, Ibrahim D. Mohammed, Yakubu M. Sanusi, Philom Ena Y. Oksakei Jun 2025

Relative Price Changes And Monetary Policy Stance In Nigeria, Elijah A. Udoh, Ibrahim D. Mohammed, Yakubu M. Sanusi, Philom Ena Y. Oksakei

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study estimates a baseline Taylor Rule and an augmented Taylor Rule incorporating relative price movements (RELP) using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) on Nigerian data. The baseline model shows weak and statistically insignificant responses of the MPR to inflation, the output gap, and crisis conditions, confirming earlier findings that inflation and output in Nigeria do not have contemporaneous effects on the MPR. By contrast, the augmented model reveals that the relative price level positively and significantly influences the policy rate, indicating that the CBN raises interest rates when domestic prices rise relative to external or bench mark prices. Across …

Fault Tolerant Dynamic Task Allocation For Heterogeneous Multi-Robot Systems, Jack R. Cline Jun 2025

Fault Tolerant Dynamic Task Allocation For Heterogeneous Multi-Robot Systems, Jack R. Cline

Master's Theses

This research presents a novel approach to dynamic task allocation in heterogeneous multi-robot systems with integrated fault detection capabilities. As multiple industries are becoming more reliant on multi-robot systems for tasks, maintaining operational efficiency despite robot failures becomes critical. We propose a framework that combines optimization-based task allocation with a Kalman filter that estimates task progress for anomaly detection to identify unreliable agents and dynamically redistribute tasks. Observing values such as the normalized innovation squared (NIS), covariance, and progress rate, the algorithm can designate a robot as faulty. Embedding information about which robots are faulty in the task algorithm allows …

Alice’S Patent Puzzle: Unlocking Patent Eligibility For Diagnostic Methods Within Wonderland’S Faulty Two-Step Framework, Anjali Dhamsania J.D. Candidate Jun 2025

Alice’S Patent Puzzle: Unlocking Patent Eligibility For Diagnostic Methods Within Wonderland’S Faulty Two-Step Framework, Anjali Dhamsania J.D. Candidate

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

As it stands today, diagnostic tests and their methods are largely unpatentable. In 2012, the Supreme Court, in Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, Inc., redefined the scope of patent subject matter, leaving a profound impact in the context of medical diagnostics. The subsequent decision by the Court in Alice Corporation v. CLS Bank International two years later significantly expanded the range of judicially created exceptions to statutory patent eligibility criteria to encompass “abstract ideas,” solidifying this “Alice-Mayo” framework as the definitive test to determine patent-eligible subject matter.

But this shift has made it exceedingly difficult to secure diagnostic …

A Bayesian Approach To Grappa Parallel Fmri Image Reconstruction Increases Snr And Power Of Task Detection, Chase J. Sakitis, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In fMRI, capturing brain activation during a task is dependent on how quickly k-space arrays are obtained. Acquiring full k-space arrays, which are reconstructed into images using the inverse Fourier transform (IFT), that make up volume images can take a considerable amount of scan time. Undersampling k-space reduces the acquisition time but results in aliased, or “folded,” images. GeneRalized Autocalibrating Partial Parallel Acquisition (GRAPPA) is a parallel imaging technique that yields full images from subsampled arrays of k-space. GRAPPA uses localized interpolation weights, which are estimated prescan and fixed over time, to fill in the missing …
