The Ideational Meaning Of Diagrams In The Malaysian And Singaporean Mathematics Textbooks, Sarveswary Velayutham Jan 2020

The Ideational Meaning Of Diagrams In The Malaysian And Singaporean Mathematics Textbooks, Sarveswary Velayutham

The Mathematics Enthusiast

A mathematical text is multimodal with different modes of communication, namely verbal language, algebraic notation, visual forms and gestures. This paper aims to compare and discuss the ideational meaning of visual forms in worked examples from Malaysian and Singaporean Grade Seven Mathematics textbooks on Lines and Angles. There are two structures in ideational meaning, namely narrative (with action) and conceptual (without action). Action diagrams represent ongoing mathematical activity whereas, without action diagrams represent mathematical objects. Document analysis and coding were carried on 57 geometrical diagrams found in the textbooks used in a 20-year period. The properties to identify a narratively …

Pre-University Students' Perceptual Flexibility With Mathematical Elements, Chee Soon Low, Cheng Meng Chew Jan 2020

Pre-University Students' Perceptual Flexibility With Mathematical Elements, Chee Soon Low, Cheng Meng Chew

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Do students see things the same as what mathematics teachers have anticipated? In a light-hearted and inquisitive mode, two fundamental mathematical tasks were administered to 147 pre-university students who newly joined a private college for enrolment into various programs. One task simply required the participants to state the variables in a linear equation and the other attempted to elicit what the participants would naturally perceive from a diagram featuring a straight line crossing the coordinate axes. This study aimed to examine the participants’ perceptual flexibility with mathematical elements without explicit hints. The emergent textual responses were qualitatively classified and the …

Psychometric Analysis Of Forensic Examiner Behavior, Amanda Luby, A. Mazumder, B. Junker Jan 2020

Psychometric Analysis Of Forensic Examiner Behavior, Amanda Luby, A. Mazumder, B. Junker

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

Forensic science often involves the comparison of crime-scene evidence to a known-source sample to determine if the evidence and the reference sample came from the same source. Even as forensic analysis tools become increasingly objective and automated, final source identifications are often left to individual examiners’ interpretation of the evidence. Each source identification relies on judgements about the features and quality of the crime-scene evidence that may vary from one examiner to the next. The current approach to characterizing uncertainty in examiners’ decision-making has largely centered around the calculation of error rates aggregated across examiners and identification tasks, without taking …

Cycle Stochastic Graphs: Structural And Forbidden Graph Characterizations, S. B. Rao, U. K. Sahoo, V. Parameswaran

Journal Articles

A vertex (respectively, edge) cycle stochastic function of a graph G is a labeling of vertices (respectively, edges) by a non-negative real valued function (Formula presented.) (respectively, (Formula presented.)) such that for every cycle of G, the sum of labels of its vertices (respectively, edges) is 1. The graphs where we can define such a function are called vertex cycle stochastic graphs (respectively, edge cycle stochastic graphs). In this paper, we provide a structure theorem for biconnected cycle stochastic graphs, which is extended to characterize edge cycle stochastic graphs. We also find a minimal forbidden graph characterization for biconnected vertex …

Bv-Operators And The Secondary Hochschild Complex, Mamta Balodi, Abhishek Banerjee, Anita Naolekar Jan 2020

Bv-Operators And The Secondary Hochschild Complex, Mamta Balodi, Abhishek Banerjee, Anita Naolekar

Journal Articles

We introduce the notion of a BV-operator Δ = {Δn: V n →Vn-1}n≥0on a homotopy G-algebra V˙such that the Gerstenhaber bracket on H(V˙) is determined by Δ in a manner similar to the BV-formalism. As an application, we produce a BV-operator on the cochain complex defining the secondary Hochschild cohomology of a symmetric algebra A over a commutative algebra B. In this case, we also show that the operator Δ˙corresponds to Connes' operator.

Hom-Lie Algebras And Hom-Lie Groups, Integration And Differentiation, Jun Jiang, Satyendra Kumar Mishra, Yunhe Sheng

Journal Articles

In this paper, we introduce the notion of a (regular) Hom-Lie group. We associate a Hom-Lie algebra to a Hom-Lie group and show that every regular Hom-Lie algebra is integrable. Then, we define a Hom-exponential (Hexp) map from the Hom-Lie algebra of a Hom-Lie group to the Hom-Lie group and discuss the universality of this Hexp map. We also describe a Hom-Lie group action on a smooth manifold. Subsequently, we give the notion of an adjoint representation of a Hom-Lie group on its Hom-Lie algebra. At last, we integrate the Hom-Lie algebra (gl(V ), [·, ·], Ad), and the derivation …

It provides a thorough review to map the quantum of knowledge relating to ‘institutional research productivity’ correlating the Indian vista. It is, however, indicative to find the …

Exponential Type Duality For Η-Approximated Variational Problems, Shalini Jha, Prasun Das, Tadeusz Antczak Jan 2020

Exponential Type Duality For Η-Approximated Variational Problems, Shalini Jha, Prasun Das, Tadeusz Antczak

Journal Articles

In this article, we use the so-called η-approximation method for solving a new class of nonconvex variational problems with exponential (p, r)-invex functionals. In this approach, we construct η- approximated variational problem and η-approximated Mond-Weir dual variational problem for the considered variational problem and its Mond-Weir dual variational problem. Then several duality results for considered variational problem and its Mond-Weir dual variational problem are proved by the help of duality results established between η-approximated variational problems mentioned above.

Balancing Act: How Does An Interdisciplinary Art Unit Affect Student Self-Efficacy In A Stem School?, Cindy Hankins-Koppel Jan 2020

Balancing Act: How Does An Interdisciplinary Art Unit Affect Student Self-Efficacy In A Stem School?, Cindy Hankins-Koppel

Ed.D. Dissertations

Abstract

Educators who use interdisciplinary methods in the classroom need consistent strategies to teach STEM content, and methods to help students increase self-efficacy. The focus on cognitive gains in STEM studies limits the number of students who pursue a foundation of STEM and 21st century skills to adapt to technological advancements for their futures. Student self-efficacy, perception of personal abilities, has become more critical as individuals need a range of academic and personal skills to adapt and persist in future endeavors. Social stereotypes and familial interests influence an individual's perception of their abilities to pursue a career in STEM from …

Growth And Development, From: Forages: The Science Of Grassland Agriculture, Volume Ii, Robert B. Mitchell, Daren Redfearn, Kenneth J. Moore

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The growth and development of forage plants is an amazing process. In some annual grasses such as cereal rye, plants can go from the late vegetative stage to fully-flowered in less than two weeks. Conversely, some perennial grasses like indiangrass can go from the vegetative stage to the elongation stage, then enter a quiescent phase for several weeks until adequate moisture is available which then moves plants into the flowering stages to complete the seed production process. Understanding the developmental morphology of forage plants is important for making good management decisions. Many such decisions involve timing the initiation or termination …

Deep Guidance Network For Biomedical Image Segmentation, Pengshuai Yin, Rui Yuan, Yiming Cheng, Qingyao Wu Jan 2020

Deep Guidance Network For Biomedical Image Segmentation, Pengshuai Yin, Rui Yuan, Yiming Cheng, Qingyao Wu

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Segmentation of 2D images is a fundamental problem for biomedical image analysis. The most widely used architecture for biomedical image segmentation is U-Net. U-Net introduces skip-connections to restore the spatial information loss caused by down-sampling operations. However, for some tasks such as the retinal vessel segmentation, the loss information of structure can not be fully recovered since the vessels is merely a curve line that can not be detected after several convolutions. In this paper, we introduce a deep guidance network to segment the biomedical image. Our proposed network consists of a guided image filter module to restore the structure …

“You Don’T Wanna Teach Little Kids About Climate Change”: Beliefs And Barriers To Sustainability Education In Early Childhood, Julia L. Ginsburg, Shannon Audley

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

To support a sustainable planet, preschools need to engage young children with sustainability education. In the United States of America (USA), nature-based preschool programs are likely to promote environmental science and nature education, given their outdoor curricula, but very little is known about how these programs might also cultivate sustainability education. The purpose of the present study was to investigate nature-based preschool teachers’ craft knowledge (Grimmett & MacKinnon, 1992) about sustainability education within curricula as they presently exist. We interviewed 22 early childhood educators and administrators across nine early childhood nature-based education centers in the Northeastern United States. Following Davis' …

Improving The Value Of The Coconut With Biotechnology, Fabian M. Dayrit, Quang Nguyen Jan 2020

Improving The Value Of The Coconut With Biotechnology, Fabian M. Dayrit, Quang Nguyen

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The fruit of the coconut tree is perhaps the most useful plant resource in the tropics. All parts of the coconut fruit have traditional uses that have been developed commercially in recent times (Foale 2003, Dayrit and Dayrit 2013). Due to its widespread household use, trade and industry statistics on coconut products reflect only part of the actual importance of the coconut. Today, coconut-based products have gone beyond the tropics and are consumed in many temperate countries and global regions such as Australia, China, Europe, North America, and the Middle East (Costello 2018). Coconut milk is the basic ingredient of …
