Simulating A Computational Biological Model, Rather Than Reading, Elicits Changes In Brain Activity During Biological Reasoning, Caron Clark, Tomáš Helikar, Joseph T. Dauer Jan 2020

Simulating A Computational Biological Model, Rather Than Reading, Elicits Changes In Brain Activity During Biological Reasoning, Caron Clark, Tomáš Helikar, Joseph T. Dauer

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The creation and analysis of models is integral to all scientific disciplines, and modeling is considered a core competency in undergraduate biology education. There remains a gap in understanding how modeling activities may support changes in students’ neural representations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of simulating a model on undergraduates’ behavioral accuracy and neural response patterns when reasoning about biological systems. During brief tutorials, students (n = 30) either simulated a computer model or read expert analysis of a gene regulatory system. Subsequently, students underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while responding to system-specific questions and …

Foster Rhodes Jackson And The Visual Conquest Of The West, Eve Kaufman Jan 2020

Foster Rhodes Jackson And The Visual Conquest Of The West, Eve Kaufman

Scripps Senior Theses

Colonizers settled the Los Angeles and the Southern California region in part by using Modernism’s visual rhetoric and propagandic implications during the time of suburban sprawl. Suburban sprawl refers to the mass single family home development which took place from the 1920[1]s until now but peaked from the 1970s to the 1990s. Los Angeles sprawl grew particularly in the 1950[2]s as soldiers returned from WWII. It was a way for middle class white families to accrue generational wealth and follow through on the American Dream[3].

The primary result however disenfranchised already marginalized groups. This …

Decay And Dissipation: Finding Energy Level Jumps In A Harmonic Oscillator System Using Fortran And Fourier Analysis, Clara Chilton Jan 2020

Decay And Dissipation: Finding Energy Level Jumps In A Harmonic Oscillator System Using Fortran And Fourier Analysis, Clara Chilton

Scripps Senior Theses

In this paper, I will look at a mass-spring system that can be described by a Hamiltonian. In most systems described by a Hamiltonian, the energy levels will be quantized, and the system will be able to jump between them. However, many methods of finding these jumps aren’t well-suited to numerical analysis. I’ll use a Markovian approximation (The Liouville von Neuman Equation), which allows me to use only the last time step to find the current one. Using this, I will analyze the system to find the time evolution of the probability density matrix – whose diagonal shows the probability …

Stationary Distribution Of Recombination On 4x4 Grid Graph As It Relates To Gerrymandering, Camryn Hollarsmith Jan 2020

Stationary Distribution Of Recombination On 4x4 Grid Graph As It Relates To Gerrymandering, Camryn Hollarsmith

Scripps Senior Theses

A gerrymandered political districting plan is used to benefit a group seeking to elect more of their own officials into office. This practice happens at the city, county and state level. A gerrymandered plan can be strategically designed based on partisanship, race, and other factors. Gerrymandering poses a contradiction to the idea of “one person, one vote” ruled by the United States Supreme Court case Reynolds v. Sims (1964) because it values one demographic’s votes more than another’s, thus creating an unfair advantage and compromising American democracy. To prevent the practice of gerrymandering, we must know how to detect a …

Reimagining Theories Of Nationalism: A Critical Examiniation Of Prevailing Nationalist Theories, Sarah Sanchez Jan 2020

Reimagining Theories Of Nationalism: A Critical Examiniation Of Prevailing Nationalist Theories, Sarah Sanchez

Scripps Senior Theses

Traditional theories of nationalism tend to fall in one of two categories: 1) top-down, or official nationalism, which holds that nationalist sentiments are created by state actors, or 2) bottom-up, or popular, nationalism, which holds that nationalist sentiments originate with the people. However, there are major flaws in both of those theories, as well as a decent amount of overlap between them. This paper dismantles the supposed binary between these two theories, and looks for a way to view the theories in combination with one another. Looking at the places of overlap, as well as the elements of each theory …

Complex Ciliary Flows Around Stentor Polymorphus In Solutions Of 2% Buttermilk And Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Eliana B. Smithstein Jan 2020

Complex Ciliary Flows Around Stentor Polymorphus In Solutions Of 2% Buttermilk And Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Eliana B. Smithstein

Scripps Senior Theses

Stentor are large, unicellular ciliates of the Heterotricha order. They live in both freshwater and marine habitats and are mostly found in ponds. I studied Stentor polymorphus, which is a species of Stentor only recently discovered to be lab culturable. They range from 0.5-1.5mm in length and are unusual because they live with endosymbiotic algae and are much more likely than other, more widely studied, species of Stentor to form aggregates while they are eating. There are three main components to this thesis: First, I established protocols for keeping a viable S. polymorphus culture, since no protocols had been …

Intercropping For Water Conservation: Environmental And Economic Implications Of A Sustainable Farming Practice In California's Central Valley, Sophie Baker Jan 2020

Intercropping For Water Conservation: Environmental And Economic Implications Of A Sustainable Farming Practice In California's Central Valley, Sophie Baker

Scripps Senior Theses

California’s agricultural sector is the biggest water consumer in the state and faces intense pressure to reduce its overall water usage. Industrialized monoculture systems dominate the industry and often disregard long-term environmental and economic externalities for short-term profit maximization. To maintain longstanding food security and economic stability as well as protect the state’s water supply, it is critical that these systems transition to more sustainable and resilient production mechanisms. As an alternative to monoculture, intercropping affords greater potential to conserve water, protect soil quality, and increase crop yields, among other metrics of sustainability. However, there has been much controversy over …

Faust In Context: A Comparitive Examination Of The Fates Of Marlowe's And Goethe's Faust Characters, Kristin Abel Jan 2020

Faust In Context: A Comparitive Examination Of The Fates Of Marlowe's And Goethe's Faust Characters, Kristin Abel

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

This paper explores two prominent plays about the legendary Doctor Faust character through examination of the historical, religious, scientific and political context in which they were written. Christopher Marlowe's The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Parts 1 and 2 were written approximately two hundred years apart and during that time, the fate of the Faust character changes from damnation in Marlowe's version to redemption in Goethe's version. Both plays reflect the shift in regard for curiosity and the pursuit of scientific knowledge from vice to virtue that occurred between the writing of each play, …

Impact Of Satellite Constellations On Optical Astronomy And Recommendations Toward Mitigations, Constance Walker, Jeffrey Hall, Lori Allen, Richard Green, Patrick Seitzer, Tony Tyson, Amanda Bauer, Kelsie Krafton, James D. Lowenthal, Et Al Jan 2020

Impact Of Satellite Constellations On Optical Astronomy And Recommendations Toward Mitigations, Constance Walker, Jeffrey Hall, Lori Allen, Richard Green, Patrick Seitzer, Tony Tyson, Amanda Bauer, Kelsie Krafton, James D. Lowenthal, Et Al

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Existing and planned large constellations of bright satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEOsats) will fundamentally change astronomical observing at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Nighttime images without the passage of a Sun-illuminated satellite will no longer be the norm. If the 100,000 or more LEOsats proposed by many companies and many governments are deployed, no combination of mitigations can fully avoid the impacts of the satellite trails on the science programs of current and planned ground-based optical-NIR astronomy facilities. Astronomers are just beginning to understand the full range of impacts on the discipline. Astrophotography, amateur astronomy, and the human experience of …

Spatio-Temporal Models Of Juvenile And Adult Sheepshead (Archosargus Probatocephalus) In Tampa Bay, Florida From 1996 To 2016, Bridgette F. Froeschke, Leslie B. Jones, Brian Garman Jan 2020

Spatio-Temporal Models Of Juvenile And Adult Sheepshead (Archosargus Probatocephalus) In Tampa Bay, Florida From 1996 To 2016, Bridgette F. Froeschke, Leslie B. Jones, Brian Garman

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Spatio-temporal distribution models for juvenile and adult Sheepshead (Archosargus protocephalus) were developed for Tampa Bay, FL using Boosted Regression Trees. Juvenile Sheepshead were primarily associated with month of collection (highest occurrence in May and June), low salinities (<10), and increased distance from a tidal inlet. Adult Sheepshead were more frequently detected closer to inlets in September through November, with an increasing trend through time, and had the highest probability of detection in areas with the highest salinity levels. Our results indicate that juvenile Sheepshead are associated with tidal tributaries on the east side of Tampa Bay and adult Sheepshead are associated with the major inlet into the Gulf of Mexico. These findings reflect seasonal and ontogenetic shifts in distribution that are necessary to inform spatially-based management approaches and to prioritize areas for habitat conservation.

A Photometric Study Of The South Polar Terrain Of Enceladus, Bereket Daniel Mamo Jan 2020

A Photometric Study Of The South Polar Terrain Of Enceladus, Bereket Daniel Mamo

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Saturn's moon, Enceladus, is a unique body in the Solar System. It is an icy world with ongoing geologic activity that spews out jets of ice particles, water vapor, and other gases from active tectonic fractures (called sulci) near its south pole. Emission from these jets is the dominant source of particles for Saturn's diffuse E ring, which envelops other icy satellites. The south polar fractures are also sources of tidally generated high heat flow. Accurate determination of this endogenic thermal output requires knowledge of the thermophysical properties of the surface, which are reliably estimated by modeling the photometric behavior …

Characterizing Minneopa State Park Visitor’S Prairie Attitudes, Views Of Conservation And Knowledge Through The Development And Implementation Of The Prairie Attitude And Knowledge Survey (Paks), Addeline R. Theis

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

For successful conservation and the continuation of restoration projects, public understanding, acceptance and support are essential. While research into public views related to restoration exist but large gaps remain. Studies examining attitudes related to conservation are limited and even fewer studies investigate these constructs in relation to demographic, societal or cultural factors; even fewer of these studies focus on prairies. Tall-grass prairies were once a dominate biome in Minnesota but now are an endangered ecosystem. While conservation is occurring throughout Minnesota to restore and create new prairies, there is lack of information examining the relationship of prairie restoration and the …

The Impact Of A Supplemental Instruction Program On Diverse Peer Leaders At A Two-Year Institution, Sarah Hoiland, Silvia Reyes, Antonio Varelas Jan 2020

The Impact Of A Supplemental Instruction Program On Diverse Peer Leaders At A Two-Year Institution, Sarah Hoiland, Silvia Reyes, Antonio Varelas

Publications and Research

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-led academic support program in which SI Leaders help students develop study habits and note-taking strategies as well as facilitate test preparation. While the effects of SI on students receiving the instruction have been thoroughly investigated, there have been far fewer studies that have assessed the impact of SI on its Leaders. Furthermore, research on Leaders has yet to adequately consider community colleges or Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), or to employ qualitative methodologies. Thus, this paper details an SI program developed at a two-year HSI and the impact of the SI Leaders’ experience via qualitative data …

Genetic Algorithm Guidance Of A Constraint Programming Solver For The Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem, Jessica M. Rudd, Andrew M. Henshaw, Lauren Staples, Sanjoosh Akkineni, Lin Li, Joe Demaio

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

This project developed a metaheuristic approach to the Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem that pairs a custom genetic algorithm with a conventional combinatorial optimization solver. This combined approach was used to build an optimal route for two popular radio show hosts to visit each of the 37 Atlanta area Jersey Mike's Subs in one day. This supported a fundraising eort to send children with chronic and terminal illnesses to Disney World through an organization called Bert's Big Adventure. Atlanta-area Jersey Mike's locations donated 100% of proceeds earned on this Day of Giving to Bert's Big Adventure. With the suggested route developed …

Problems With Adherence And Social Stigma In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Lauralee Davis Jan 2020

Problems With Adherence And Social Stigma In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Lauralee Davis

Master’s Theses

For adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes the clinical importance of both adherence to disease management and social support from family and friends is apparent. However, the role that family support or peer support plays on adherence to diabetes management or how stigma impacts adherence is still unclear. This study aims to determine differences between the type of support provided by family compared to peers, to examine how possible differences in the type of support impact adherence, to examine how social anxiety and stigma may be related to adherence, and to examine the types of barriers adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes …

Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby Jan 2020

Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Given the climate of distrust, colleges and universities are examining strategies to enable them to remain relevant. Efforts to answer the recent outcry for productive, effective, and evidencedbased outcomes include adapting curricula and degree programs to better prepare graduates for employment. Competency-based education (CBE) programs are at the forefront of these approaches. Although not a new concept, CBE has shifted from its vocational training roots to its current attention on student results. The acquisition of competence requires an engaged learner who practices self-reflection (Dreyfus, 2004). Albanese, et al. (2008) suggest competencies should be outcome focused, emphasize applied-learning, and be measurable. …

Time Management Matters: Online Faculty Perceptions Of Helpfulness Of Time Management Strategies, Beth Oyarzun, Florence Martin, Robert L. Moore

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This study examined 256 faculty survey responses to determine perceptions of helpfulness of 24 time management strategies grouped into four categories defined by Berge (1995) as managerial, pedagogical, technical, and social. Findings indicate that establishing clear and specific expectations (M = 4.32) was perceived as the most helpful, followed by organizing content into modules or units (M = 4.28), which were both pedagogical time management strategies. Participants additionally responded to two open-ended items regarding the most and least helpful time management strategies. The open-ended responses were consistent with the survey findings. The relationship between faculty demographic factors and strategies showed …

The Impact Of Ryegrass On A Fragipan Soil, Keegan Patrick Smith Jan 2020

The Impact Of Ryegrass On A Fragipan Soil, Keegan Patrick Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Fragipans are soil horizons which negatively impact row crop yields due to their cemented nature. Annual ryegrass has been proposed as a cover crop to help remediate these dense horizons. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate potential ryegrass root exudates and their ability to solubilize proposed fragipan cementing agents, aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), and silica (Si) in stirred-batch reactor studies; and (2) evaluate annual ryegrass’ ability to remediate the fragipan through an 8-week greenhouse growth study using non-destructive, mini-rhizon samplers installed on soil cores for in situ pore water sampling, and non-invasive soil porosity calculations using X-ray …

Acute Sensitivity And Tolerance To Alcohol As Predictors Of At-Risk Drinking, Holley Allen Jan 2020

Acute Sensitivity And Tolerance To Alcohol As Predictors Of At-Risk Drinking, Holley Allen

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Laboratory studies have reliably shown that reduced sensitivity to alcohol’s subjective intoxicating effect is associated with heavier drinking. More recently, there has been research to suggest that heightened sensitivity to the disinhibiting effects of alcohol might also contribute to at-risk drinking. Most research on the acute effects of alcohol has focused on drinking magnitudes averaged across participants with little attention to how individual differences influence abuse potential. This study overcomes previous limitations by testing the degree to which individual differences in acute sensitivity and tolerance to the subjective intoxicating and disinhibiting effects of alcohol predict drinking behavior in a large …

Facies Distribution, Paleoenvironment And Sequence Stratigraphy Model Of The Oligo-Miocene Asmari Formation (Fars Province, South Of Iran), Fereshteh Kamalifar, Mohsen Aleali, Vahid Ahamadi, Akram Mirzaiee

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Oligocene (Rupelian-Chattian) to Miocene (Aquitanian)-aged Asmari Formation is considered one of the most significant petroliferous reservoirs in the Middle East. The Oligocene-Miocene Asmari Formation represents diverse facies patterns in different parts of Zagros, so analysis of its facies in different provinces of the Zagros Basin is necessary. In this study, the sedimentary depositional sequences of Asmari Formation in the Firuzabad (south of Shiraz) and Bastak (west of Bandar-Abbas) sections in the Zagros Basin (Fras Platform) have been analyzed for distinguishing facies characteristics, interpreting the paleoenvironment and determining dominant depositional sequences. Based on field investigations and laboratory studies, 13 microfacies …

Sedimentary Characteristics Of Early Miocene Platform Deposits In The Neogene Adanabasin, Southern Turkey, Ülvi̇ Can Ünlügenç, Ahmet Can Akinci

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We report a detailed description of the sedimentological characteristics of the Early Miocene platform deposits to contribute towards the understanding of the evolution of the Neogene Adana Basin (southern Anatolia). Several detailed sedimentological logs were measured and interpreted from the platform deposits (Kaplankaya, Karaisalı, and turbiditic Cingöz formations) of the Adana Basin. The depositional evolution of the Adana Basin began during the Early Miocene as a foreland basin. The basin fill is both marine and nonmarine in character, which shows a gradual transition at the northern margin of the basin from one into another. Formation of the basin commenced by …

In Planta Evaluation Of Gene Regulation By Soybean Auxin Response Factors, Pratiksha K C Jan 2020

In Planta Evaluation Of Gene Regulation By Soybean Auxin Response Factors, Pratiksha K C

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is an important plant nutrient but its abundance in the soil is not sufficient for profitable crop production. N input in the form of chemical fertilizers helps fill this need; however, an alternative for fertilizers is an immediate need due to the environmental pollution resulting from excessive use of fertilizers. Leguminous plants such as soybean (Glycine max) that form root nodules through symbiotic association with N-fixing rhizobia and therefore need little or no chemical N fertilizers. The plant hormone auxin plays a crucial role in determining the number of nodules and their rate of maturity in soybean. Auxin …

A Cs1 Spatial Skills Intervention And The Impact On Introductory Programming Abilities, Ryan Bockmon, Stephen Cooper, William Koperski, Jonathan Gratch, Sheryl Sorby, Mohsen Dorodchi

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the results of replicating and extending a study performed by Cooper et al. examining the relationship between students’ spatial skills and their success in learning to program. Whereas Cooper et al. worked with high school students participat- ing in a summer program, we worked with college students taking an introductory computing course. Like Cooper et al.’s study, we saw a correlation between a student’s spatial skills and their success in learning computing. More significantly, we saw that after apply- ing an intervention to teach spatial skills, students demonstrated improved performance both on a standard spatial skills assessment …

The distinction of chiral and mirror symmetric objects is straightforward from a geometrical point of view. Since the biological as well as the optical activity of molecules strongly depend on their handedness, chirality has recently attracted high interest in the field of nano-optics. Various aspects of associated phenomena including the influences of internal and external degrees of freedom on the optical response have been discussed. Here, we propose a constructive method to evaluate the possibility of observing any chiral response from an optical scatterer. Based on solely the T-matrix of one enantiomer, planes of minimal chiral response are located and …

Ev Charging Behavior Analysis Using Hybrid Intelligence For 5g Smart Grid, Yi Shen, Wei Fang, Feng Ye, Michel Kadoch Jan 2020

Ev Charging Behavior Analysis Using Hybrid Intelligence For 5g Smart Grid, Yi Shen, Wei Fang, Feng Ye, Michel Kadoch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the widespread use of electric vehicles (EV), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) has sparked considerable discussion as an energy-management technology. Due to the inherently high maneuverability of EVs, V2G systems must provide on-demand service for EVs. Therefore, in this work, we propose a hybrid computing architecture based on fog and cloud with applications in 5G-based V2G networks. This architecture allows the bi-directional flow of power and information between schedulable EVs and smart grids (SGs) to improve the quality of service and cost-effectiveness of energy service providers. However, it is very important to select …
