Investigations On Mechanisms Of Survival And Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Ulcerans In Polymicrobial Environments, Laxmi Dhungel Nov 2020

Investigations On Mechanisms Of Survival And Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Ulcerans In Polymicrobial Environments, Laxmi Dhungel

Theses and Dissertations

Buruli ulcer disease (BUD) remains a ‘mysterious disease’ due to the unknown mode of M. ulcerans transmission and pathogenesis. To understand these, it is important to determine the reservoir of the organism in its natural environments, and stress response and interactions of M. ulcerans in its natural niche and during infection of a host. The major virulence factor of M. ulcerans is mycolactone, a lipid cytotoxin that is encoded on a giant plasmid pMUM001. Genetic analysis suggests that plasmid pMUM001 was acquired by M. ulcerans during evolution from its progenitor, M. marinum. Coincidental evolution of virulence hypothesis suggests that many …

Learner Perceptions Of Demotivators In The English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Classroom: Conceptual Framework, Scale Development, And Tentative Underlying Cause Analysis, Jianling Xie Nov 2020

Learner Perceptions Of Demotivators In The English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Classroom: Conceptual Framework, Scale Development, And Tentative Underlying Cause Analysis, Jianling Xie

Theses and Dissertations

Notwithstanding the negative influence of demotivation on student learning outcomes, prior research in EFL demotivation suffers from the lack of generally agreed-upon conceptual understanding, which hampers scale development. The present series of studies sought to explore the ideas of demotivation and describe the development of the Learner Perception of Demotivators Scale (LPDS) both conceptually and psychometrically. In Study 1 (N = 295), an exploratory factor analysis offered preliminary support for a factor structure comprising three dimensions: negative teacher behavior, loss of task value, and low expectancy for success. In Study 2 (N = 320), the proposed factor structure was further …

Agronomic, Economic, And Ecological Response Of Corn And Soybean Production Systems To Winter Cover Cropping And Minimum Tillage Management In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Thomas Beauregard Badon Nov 2020

Agronomic, Economic, And Ecological Response Of Corn And Soybean Production Systems To Winter Cover Cropping And Minimum Tillage Management In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Thomas Beauregard Badon

Theses and Dissertations

Winter fallow corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production systems are susceptible to erosion and agrochemical transport. This research determined the effects of Cover Crop Minimum Tillage (CCMT) on erosion and agrochemical transport from corn-soybean rotations at field scale, while assessing impacts to agroeconomics and irrigation in Mississippi’s Delta Region. CCMT did not affect total suspended solids (p = 0.53), total inorganic phosphorus (TIP) (p = 0.30), or total nitrogen (TN) (p = 0.25) loads, but did reduce TIP (p = 0.018), TN (p = 0.011), and nitrate-nitrite (p = 0.007) concentrations. An economic loss of …

Preservice Teachers' Preparation To Teach English Learners In Poor Rural Areas, Daina Zhu Nov 2020

Preservice Teachers' Preparation To Teach English Learners In Poor Rural Areas, Daina Zhu

Theses and Dissertations

Extant research focusing on rural teacher education programs emphasizes the urgency of teacher preparation investigation and professional development which is needed to successfully work with ELs (e.g. Fry & Anderson, 2011; Hansen Thomas et al., 2014; Manner & Rodriguez, 2012; O’Neal et al., 2008). However, little research has included preservice teachers’ perspectives related to their own preparatory programs. This study fills the gap in previous research by investigating preservice teachers’ perceptions of how their teacher education programs are preparing them to teach ELs in poor rural areas. This study was conducted in Mississippi, a state in which over 50% of …

Selected Discipline Infractions And Consequences Associated With Academic Performance In The Mississippi Delta, Sheila B. King

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of the research study was to identify the most common discipline infractions and consequences for Grade 7 and Grade 8 students enrolled in a middle school located in the Mississippi Delta. In addition, the study sought to determine relationships among the common discipline infractions and student performance and the common discipline consequences and student performance on the statewide assessments for English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics by grade level. The study utilized existing data for the Grade 7 and Grade 8 students who had committed one or more disciplinary infractions during the 2017-2018 school year and had ELA …

Engaging Equity Pedagogies In Computer Science Learning Environments, Tia C. Madkins, Nicol R. Howard, Natalie Freed Nov 2020

Engaging Equity Pedagogies In Computer Science Learning Environments, Tia C. Madkins, Nicol R. Howard, Natalie Freed

Journal of Computer Science Integration

In this position paper, we advocate for the use of equity-focused teaching and learning as an essential practice within computer science classrooms. We provide an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of various equity pedagogies (Banks & Banks, 1995), such as culturally relevant pedagogy (Ladson-Billings, 1995, 2006) and share how they have been utilized in CS classrooms. First, we provide a brief history of CS education and issues of equity within public schools in the United States. In sharing our definition of equity, along with our rationale for how and why these strategies can be taken up in computer science (CS) …

From Japanese To Elvish: Comparing Different Writing Systems, Isabella Bumbera Nov 2020

From Japanese To Elvish: Comparing Different Writing Systems, Isabella Bumbera

The Compass

In terms of literacy, the combination of orthography – the conventional spelling system of a language – and second language (L2) acquisition is not widely studied. The research thus far comprises auditory or verbal acquisition - showing that an L2 learner studying a language phonetically similar to their own would have greater ease in acquiring the L2.1 While similar phonetics play a part in ease of L2 acquisition, the research focuses mainly on grammar and debates providing corrective input versus no input when learners make a grammatical error. Although many studies demonstrate how phonetics and grammar contribute to L2 learning, …
