Aspects Of Causal Inference., John A. Craycroft Dec 2020

Aspects Of Causal Inference., John A. Craycroft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Observational studies differ from experimental studies in that assignment of subjects to treatments is not randomized but rather occurs due to natural mechanisms, which are usually hidden from researchers. Yet objectives of the two studies are frequently the same: identify the causal – rather than merely associational – relationship between some treatment or exposure and an outcome. The statistical issues that arise in properly analyzing observational data for this goal are numerous and fascinating, and these issues are encompassed in the domain of causal inference. The research presented in this dissertation explores several distinct aspects of causal inference. This dissertation …

Cost Optimization Modeling Of Renewable Energy Sources In Smart Grid Using Scada, Nafisa Islam Dec 2020

Cost Optimization Modeling Of Renewable Energy Sources In Smart Grid Using Scada, Nafisa Islam

All Theses

In recent times, renewable energy production from renewable energy sources is an alternative way to fulfill the increased energy demands. However, the increasing energy demand rate places more pressure, leading to the termination of conventional energy resources. On the other hand, the depletion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, natural gas, etc., is creating an adverse effect on the environment. However, the cost of power generation from coal-fired plants is higher than the power generation's price from renewable energy sources. Therefore, it has become a stumbling block balancing this increased energy demand using existing resources and new renewable resources that …

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Genetics is the study of genetics using neutrosophic logic, set, probability, statistics, measure and other neutrosophic tools and procedures. In this paper, based on the Neutrosophic Theory of Evolution (that includes degrees of Evolution, Neutrality (or Indeterminacy), and Involution) – as extension of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, we show the applicability of neutrosophy in genetics, and we present within the frame of neutrosophic genetics the following concepts: neutrosophic mutation, neutrosophic speciation, and neutrosophic coevolution.

I Told You That To Tell You This: Metagaming And Metacognition In The Hybrid Classroom, Marc A. Ouellette Dec 2020

I Told You That To Tell You This: Metagaming And Metacognition In The Hybrid Classroom, Marc A. Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

This paper theorizes the use of play and gamified methods to foster metacognition, or strategies for learning and learning about learning, in online graduate instruction. In the process, it calls into question the determinism of “serious” games as being the only means of facilitating metacognition. Ultimately, by adopting metagame approaches—that is, approaches based on0 goals and achievements that are external to the game and/or are developed by the players themselves—metacognition can and does occur because students participate in the development of the rewards. Moreover, any metagame feature ultimately becomes a commentary so that an approach based on metagaming offers its …

We obtain asymptotics for sums of the form

Sigma(p)(n=1) e(alpha(k) n(k) + alpha(1)n),

involving lower order main terms. As an application, we show that for almost all alpha(2) is an element of [0, 1) one has

sup(alpha 1 is an element of[0,1)) | Sigma(1 <= n <= P) e(alpha(1)(n(3) + n) + alpha(2)n(3))| << P3/4+epsilon,

and that in a suitable sense this is best possible. This allows us to improve bounds for the fractal dimension of solutions to the Schrodinger and Airy equations.

Characterizing Student Engagement In A Post-Secondary Developmental Mathematics Class And Exploring The Reflexivity Between Social And Sociomathematical Norms, David Fifty

Doctoral Dissertations

Traditionally, post-secondary developmental mathematics courses aspire to equip students with mathematical content knowledge needed to succeed in calculus and subsequent STEM courses. The literature shows that this goal alone is insufficient, as the emphasis on content acquisition often comes at the expense of developing higher-order skills such as argumentation, reasoning, and flexibility in mathematics problem solving (Chiaravalloti, 2009; Partanen & Kaasila, 2014; Star et al., 2015). Redesigning curricula with these additional objectives in mind requires providing students with opportunities to engage with mathematics in ways that may contrast with their past experiences or expectations. It requires changing patterns of classroom …

Magnetoelastic Excitations In Chiral Magnets, Christopher Libby Dec 2020

Magnetoelastic Excitations In Chiral Magnets, Christopher Libby

Doctoral Dissertations

Emergence of quasiparticles is a central concept in condensed matter physics. As an example, in solids, lattice vibrations lead to quantized phonon excitations, which gives rise to many exotic phenomena, including superconductivity. Things become richer in magnetic systems. Collective fluctuations about a magnetic ground state induce the spin wave excitation, whose quantized quasiparticle is dubbed as the magnon. A fundamental question is how phonon and magnon, as two separate degrees of freedom, can be coupled together. More importantly, certain symmetry, such as spatial inversion symmetry, can be broken in novel magnetic textures. It is interesting to explore whether broken symmetry …
