It Takes A Village: Engaging Families To Support Student Transitioning Into A New School, Michael R. Hutchins
Counselor Education Capstones
Students face many barriers throughout their education and school transitions have always been a significant challenge for many. Moving to a new school always comes with a host of challenges whether you are moving into kindergarten as a 5-year old or moving to a four-year university as an 18-year old. Schools attempt many different interventions at each of these levels but one common theme, that transcends through a student’s entire journey and increases the chances of a success, is engaging families throughout its entirety. Parents are typically much more involved in a student’s earlier years of school, typically elementary school, …

Conditional Generative Adversarial Network Demosaicing Strategy For Division Of Focal Plane Polarimeters, Garrett Sargent, Bradley M. Ratliff, Vijayan K. Asari
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Division of focal plane (DoFP), or integrated microgrid polarimeters, typically consist of a 2 × 2 mosaic of linear polarization filters overlaid upon a focal plane array sensor and obtain temporally synchronized polarized intensity measurements across a scene, similar in concept to a Bayer color filter array camera. However, the resulting estimated polarimetric images suffer a loss in resolution and can be plagued by aliasing due to the spatially-modulated microgrid measurement strategy. Demosaicing strategies have been proposed that attempt to minimize these effects, but result in some level of residual artifacts. In this work we propose a conditional generative adversarial …

Varying The Aspect Ratio Of Toroidal Ion Traps: Implications For Design, Performance, And Miniaturization, Praneeth Madushan Hettikankanange
Varying The Aspect Ratio Of Toroidal Ion Traps: Implications For Design, Performance, And Miniaturization, Praneeth Madushan Hettikankanange
Theses and Dissertations
A large aspect ratio leads to higher ion capacity in miniaturized ion trap mass spectrometers. The aspect ratio (AR) of an ion trap represents the ratio between an extended trapping dimension and the characteristic trapping dimension. In contrast to linear and rectilinear traps, changing the AR of a toroidal ion trap (TorIT) results in changes to the degree of curvature and shape of the trapping potential, and hence, on performance as a mass analyzer. SIMION simulations show that higher-order terms in the trapping potential vary strongly for small and moderate AR values (below ~10), with the effects asymptotically flattening for …
Infinite Volume Reconstruction Method Qed Pion Mass Corrections On The Lattice, Michael Riberdy
Infinite Volume Reconstruction Method Qed Pion Mass Corrections On The Lattice, Michael Riberdy
Honors Scholar Theses
We use the Infinite Volume Reconstruction Method to calculate the charged/neutral pion mass difference. The hadronic tensor is calculated on the lattice using a QCD+QED framework, and the mass shift is calculated with exponentially-suppressed finite volume errors. In this paper we discuss the Feynman diagrams relevant to the pion mass difference and we recapitulate the advantages of the Infinite Volume Reconstruction Method. We then discuss the extrapolation to the continuum limit, and report a charged/neutral pion mass difference of 4.52 MeV, which is within 1.44% of the accepted value.

Food System Resilience In Nigeria: Farmers Perspective, Azariah Lawal
Food System Resilience In Nigeria: Farmers Perspective, Azariah Lawal
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Disturbances are inherent in every socio-ecological system (SES). However, the spate and scope of upheavals in contemporary SES has increased dramatically in recent years. Agricultural systems are perhaps the most impacted when disasters occur because different aspects of agricultural production are directly affected. The burgeoning farmers-Fulani herdsmen conflict in West Africa is a manifestation of these challenges. When faced with events like these, contemporary food systems are faced with two options: collapse or transform. It is essential to have resilient agricultural systems because these systems lie at the nexus of resolving emerging global issues.
Nigeria is an important country in …

Computer Vision For Recycling, Pratima Kandel
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Americans recycle 32.1 percent of all the waste they create, as confirmed by the latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency. However, the underlying issue that remains is that most Americans are not equipped with the knowledge of the correct methods of recycling – and the deficiency of that knowledge is the greatest quandary to ensuring that the country is “green” and environment friendly. A survey of two thousand American citizens revealed that 62 percent of them worry that this inadequate knowledge is causing them to recycle incorrectly. The aim of this research is to develop an Android App, where …

Segment And Intersection Crash Analysis Methodologies For Utah Highways, Camille Cherie Lunt
Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on the Crash Analysis Methodology for Segments (CAMS) which provides a way for engineers at the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to prioritize safety improvements on state-owned roadways. Unlike the Utah crash analysis methodologies that come before it, the CAMS focuses exclusively on segment-related crashes. The benefits of such an analysis can be found in identifying locations that have safety concerns unbiased from intersections and their related crashes. The CAMS uses UDOT data to create a spreadsheet of roadway segments and their associated crashes. Each segment is homogeneous with respect to five variables: Annual Average Daily Traffic …

Clustered Hyperspectral Target Detection, Sean Onufer Stalley
Clustered Hyperspectral Target Detection, Sean Onufer Stalley
Dissertations and Theses
Aerial target detection is often used to search for relatively small things over large areas of land. Depending on the size and signature of the target, detection can be a very easy or very difficult task. By capturing images with several hundred color channels, hyperspectral sensors provide a new way of looking at this task, both literally and figuratively. Hyperspectral sensors can be used in many aerial target detection tasks such as identifying unhealthy trees in a forest, searching for minerals at a mining site, or finding the sources of chemical leaks at a factory. The high spectral resolution of …

Can Statcast Variables Explain The Variation In Weighted Runs Created Plus?, Ryan Kupiec
Can Statcast Variables Explain The Variation In Weighted Runs Created Plus?, Ryan Kupiec
Student Research
The release of Statcast data in 2015 was revolutionary for data analysis in the game of baseball. Many analysts have begun using this data regularly, but none have used it exclusively. Often older, less reliable statistics (on-base percentage) are still used in favor of the newer statistics (weighted runs created plus). In this paper, we attempt to explain the variation in weighted runs created plus (wRC+) using Statcast variables such as exit velocity and launch angle. We find that exit velocity along with other Statcast variables, can explain as much as 70% of the variation in wRC+. Launch angle can …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
A new group of direct arylazo dyestuffs that are based on the spiro 2-oxndole (3,2)-1,3' thiazolone moiety was successfully synthesized by the authors [1]. In view of the current interest in utilizing the sulpho arylazo dyestuffs for dyeing different types of fibers, the present paper describes the possibility of using carbon for their removal, as organic pollutants, from aqueous solutions. The removal of these dyestuffs from their aqueous solutions was carried out by using different adsorbents such as granular carbon, carbon soot, and powdered activated carbon (PAC) at different temperatures ranging from 25 C to 60°C. The adsorption of these …

Covid-19, Labor Demand, And Government Responses: Evidence From Job Posting Data, Xiaobing Shuai, Christine Chmura, James Stinchcomb
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications
Using high-frequency job advertisement data, this paper evaluates dynamics among COVID-19, labor market, and government policies. We find that COVID-19 has caused a significant decline in labor demand, by as much as 30%, measured by the number of job advertisements. But the pandemic did not result in noticeable changes in advertised wages. Regarding the roles of government policies, the study finds that the “stay-at-home” measures implemented by states appeared to suppress labor demand. The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) program helps to stabilize the advertised wages, but also suppresses labor demand. Finally, the pandemic may increase labor demand for certain healthcare-related …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Awareness of environmental issues has led to increasing interest from composite researchers in using “greener” materials to replace synthetic fiber reinforcements and petrochemical polymer matrices. Natural fiber bio-based thermoplastic composites could be an appropriate choice with advantages including reducing environmental impacts, using renewable resources and being recyclable. The choice of polymer matrix will significantly affect the cost, manufacturing process, mechanical properties and durability of the composite system. The criteria for appropriate monomers are based on the processing temperature and viscosity, polymer mechanical properties, recyclability, etc. This review considers the selection of thermoplastic monomers suitable for in situ polymerization during resin, …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Authentication based on keystroke dynamics is a convenient biometric approach, easy in use, transparent, and cheap as it does not require a dedicated sensor. Keystroke authentication, as part of multi factor authentication, can be used in remote display access to guarantee the security of use of remote connectivity systems during the access control phase or throughout the session. This paper investigates how network conditions and additional host interaction may impact the behavioural pattern of keystrokes when used in a remote desktop application scenario. We focus on the timing of adjacent keys and investigate this impact by calculating the variations of …

Secure Outsourced Computation On Encrypted Data, Asma Aloufi
Secure Outsourced Computation On Encrypted Data, Asma Aloufi
Theses
Homomorphic encryption (HE) is a promising cryptographic technique that supports computations on encrypted data without requiring decryption first. This ability allows sensitive data, such as genomic, financial, or location data, to be outsourced for evaluation in a resourceful third-party such as the cloud without compromising data privacy. Basic homomorphic primitives support addition and multiplication on ciphertexts. These primitives can be utilized to represent essential computations, such as logic gates, which subsequently can support more complex functions. We propose the construction of efficient cryptographic protocols as building blocks (e.g., equality, comparison, and counting) that are commonly used in data analytics and …
