Asian Students' Perceptions Of How They Are Seen In 'The West': A Case Study At An Australian University, Toni J. Dobinson Jan 2020

Asian Students' Perceptions Of How They Are Seen In 'The West': A Case Study At An Australian University, Toni J. Dobinson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Australian universities attract increasing numbers of students from the Asia-Pacific region. It is important, therefore, that academics have meaningful understandings of these students in order to provide them with a supportive learning environment. This article suggests that part of this understanding is being aware of the ways in which some of these students perceive they are seen by those in the receiving countries and the discourses which may feed these perceptions. The qualitative study reported here outlines the perceptions of 10 Vietnamese offshore postgraduates (VOPs) and nine Asian onshore postgraduates (AOPs) from different Asian countries at an Australian university. All …

A Case-Based Tool Promoting Teacher’S Reflection On Intercultural Encounters, Anuleena Kimanen, Tapani Innanen Jan 2020

A Case-Based Tool Promoting Teacher’S Reflection On Intercultural Encounters, Anuleena Kimanen, Tapani Innanen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This design-based study explores what kind of reflection in-service or student teachers produced in case-based discussion workshops, and how. Worksheets on the case and tasks facilitated discussion in small groups. In this study, the targets of reflection written on those sheets are analysed. Three levels and seven categories of reflection emerged, ranging from context and practices to principles and power relations. Most of the reflection was superficial or on the meso-level, the level of deepest reflection was reached to greatly differing degrees depending on the group or case concerned. Both some in-service and some student teachers needed scaffolding by …

Assessment Of Literacy Pedagogy Using Gratitude, Glenn Auld, Andrew Eyers, Joanne O'Mara Jan 2020

Assessment Of Literacy Pedagogy Using Gratitude, Glenn Auld, Andrew Eyers, Joanne O'Mara

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper considers aspects of a course redesign that focuses on motivating Pre-service Teachers to engage in negotiating relevant literacy teaching pedagogies in their discipline. The purpose of this article is to describe how we approached the teaching of literacy with Pre-service Teachers, in ways that valued the Pre-service Teachers’ relationships with secondary students using notes of gratitude. These notes provided the Pre-service Teachers with an opportunity to communicate in plain language to the students what they learnt from them about literacy pedagogy. The shift from the focus on the subject matter of literacy to the enactment of literacy teaching …

Professional Learning In Reading Instruction: The Influence Of Context On Engagement And Enactment, Susan Main, Deslea Konza, Mark Hackling, Graeme Lock Jan 2020

Professional Learning In Reading Instruction: The Influence Of Context On Engagement And Enactment, Susan Main, Deslea Konza, Mark Hackling, Graeme Lock

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Professional learning is widely acknowledged as an effective way to improve teacher practice and, consequently, student outcomes. However, this presupposes a direct link from professional learning to the enactment of the content of professional learning in teaching. This paper explores teachers’ engagement with a continuing professional learning (CPL) program intended to improve teachers’ knowledge and practice in reading instruction. Six case study subjects, self-selected from 10 schools participating in a year‑long CPL program, provided the opportunity to explore what teachers enacted from the professional learning. This research highlighted the significance of contextual factors on how teachers engaged with and enacted …

Anatomy Of A Peace Educator: Her Work And Workplace, Gulistan Gursel-Bilgin, David Flinders

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article reports a case study that examined the peace education practice of a 5th and 6th grade teacher at an independent, non-profit school in the Mid-western United States. The study used Paulo Freire’s (1970) conception of dialogue as its conceptual framework. After describing the study’s context and methods, we present data focusing on the teacher’s background and development as a peace educator, her teaching practices, and her relationships with her students, school and local community. We discuss Michelle’s interdisciplinary approach to peace education linked with her personal background and her use of dialogue as dynamic, fluid, and relational. Our …

Matching Possible Mitigations To Cyber Threats: A Document-Driven Decision Support Systems Approach, Martha Wagner Mcneil, Cherie Noteboom, Jun Liu, Omar El-Gayar, Thomas H. Llansó Jan 2020

Matching Possible Mitigations To Cyber Threats: A Document-Driven Decision Support Systems Approach, Martha Wagner Mcneil, Cherie Noteboom, Jun Liu, Omar El-Gayar, Thomas H. Llansó

Research & Publications

Despite more than a decade of heightened focus on cybersecurity, the threat continues. To address possible impacts, cyber threats must be addressed. Mitigation catalogs exist in practice today, but these do not map mitigations to the specific threats they counter. Currently, mitigations are manually selected by cybersecurity experts (CSE) who are in short supply. To reduce labor and improve repeatability, an automated approach is needed for matching mitigations to cyber threats. This research explores the application of supervised machine learning and text retrieval techniques to automate matching of relevant mitigations to cyber threats where both are expressed as text, resulting …

Credibility Analysis Of News On Twitter Using Lstm: An Exploratory Study, Piyush Vyas, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

The popularity and pervasiveness of social media platforms as mechanisms for the rapid dissemination and propagation of news and the ease by which such information can be created and shared, makes it increasingly important to verify its credibility. This work focuses on the automatic credibility analysis of news on microblogging platforms such as Twitter. Using the publicly available PHEME twitter dataset, we perform classification using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) technique. Our dataset was divided into two parts, 80% for training and validation, and 20% for testing. The preliminary results show the potential of our proposed model to classify news …

Topical Mining Of Malaria Using Social Media. A Text Mining Approach, James Boit, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease, common in subtropical and tropical climates caused by mosquitoes. Each year, several hundred thousand of people die from malaria infections. However, with the rapid growth, popularity and global reach of social media usage, a myriad of opportunities arises for extracting opinions and discourses on various topics and issues. This research examines the public discourse, trends and emergent themes surrounding malaria discussion. We query Twitter corpus leveraging text mining algorithms to extract and analyze topical themes. Further, to investigate these dynamics, we use Crimson social media analytics software to analyze topical emergent themes and monitor …

Solving Russian Velars: Palatalization, The Lexicon And Gradient Contrast Utilization, Jeffrey R. Parker, Andrea D. Sims Jan 2020

Solving Russian Velars: Palatalization, The Lexicon And Gradient Contrast Utilization, Jeffrey R. Parker, Andrea D. Sims

The complexity of an inflection class system is the average extent to which elements in the system inhibit motivated inferences about the realization of lexemes’ paradigm cells. Research shows that systems tend to exhibit relatively low complexity in this sense. However, representations of inflectional systems tend to include only affixal and regular patterns, leaving questions about how irregular patterns and non-affixal ‘layers’ of inflectional exponence affect the complexity of a system. We address these questions by exploring four layers of inflectional exponence of Russian nouns, including irregular patterns within each layer. Our data show that the Russian noun system exhibits …

The Independent State Legislature Doctrine, Federal Elections, And State Constitutions, Michael T. Morley Jan 2020

The Independent State Legislature Doctrine, Federal Elections, And State Constitutions, Michael T. Morley

Georgia Law Review

The U.S. Constitution does not confer authority to regulate
federal elections on states as entities. Rather, it grants that
authority specifically to the “Legislature” of each state. The
“independent state legislature doctrine” teaches that a state
constitution is legally incapable of imposing substantive
restrictions on the authority over federal elections that the U.S.
Constitution confers directly upon a state’s legislature. Over the
past 130 years, the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly adopted
conflicting positions on this doctrine without recognizing its
deep historical roots or normative justifications.
The independent state legislature doctrine reflects the
prevailing understanding of states, Congress, and other …

Abstract:

We have extracted c. 2 million tokens of vowels from a rigorous sample of 63 speakers across the American South in an NSF-funded project for forced alignment and automatic formant extraction. We show how our vowel measurements across the whole region differ from national mean F1/F2 scores. We contrast men and women, and African Americans and non- African Americans, within the Southern region.

Locations, Programs, And Content Of Graduate Education In Business Communication, Stephen A. Carradini, Matt Baker, Matthew R. Sharp, Elise Davidson

Faculty Publications

This study explored locations, programs, and content of graduate education in business communication to provide guidance for prospective graduate students interested in becoming business communication faculty.

The researchers conducted a survey of business communication scholars, drawing on the backgrounds and knowledge of those who currently teach and research business communication.

Findings indicate that 93 universities offer programs supporting graduate business communication education. This number dwarfs the 12 previously documented programs. These 93 programs are rarely called “business communication.” More respondents received training in business communication practice in master’s programs than in doctoral programs, while more respondents received training in pedagogy …

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association between neighborhood crime, the absence of community health centers, the lack of culturally competent providers, the lack of public transportation, the residential setting, the distance to T2DM education classes, and access to tertiary prevention among Hispanics diagnosed with T2DM. The research was guided by the Andersen behavioral model. A sample size of N = 4,977 was used in the study, …

High School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Jeffrey Allen Hinton Jan 2020

High School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Jeffrey Allen Hinton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem at the local site was a gap in practice in that teachers were not using culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in their delivery of lessons, which may have contributed to an achievement gap between European American and Asian American students and African American and Latinx students. This problem was important because local ACT results indicated that a significant achievement gap existed between these student populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers’ use of CRP, which may serve to mitigate the achievement gap. The conceptual framework for this study was self-determination theory. The research questions focused on …

Crittenden, Alejandro Erut, Sheina Lew-Levy, Carla Sebastian-Enesco, Andrew Marcus Smith, Süheyla Yilmaz, Joan B. Silk

School of Psychology

Recent studies have proposed that social norms play a key role in motivating human cooperation and in explaining the unique scale and cultural diversity of our prosociality. However, there have been few studies that directly link social norms to the form, development and variation in prosocial behaviour across societies. In a cross-cultural study of eight diverse societies, we provide evidence that (1) the prosocial behaviour of adults is predicted by what other members of their society judge to be the correct social norm, (2) the responsiveness of children to novel social norms develops similarly across societies and (3) societally variable …

Perceptions Of Academic Success Of English As A Second Language Nursing Students, Jean Lansang Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Academic Success Of English As A Second Language Nursing Students, Jean Lansang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hispanic or Latino and Asian communities represent two of the rapid-growing ethnicities who seek healthcare in the United States. However, the U.S. nursing workforce does not reflect the ethnic or cultural makeup of the patient population. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of Asian and Hispanic or Latino English as a second language (ESL) nursing students and learn the barriers and facilitators they experienced in their nursing program. A qualitative phenomenological approach underpinned by the social-ecological model and the Cummins language acquisition model was used for the study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 7 Asian …

Trademark Law Pluralism, Daniel J. Hemel, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette Jan 2020

Trademark Law Pluralism, Daniel J. Hemel, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In recent years, trademark scholars have come to recognize that the supply of words, sounds, and symbols available to designate new goods and services is an exhaustible resource. In certain sectors, the most common English words and syllables and the most common U.S. surnames are almost all claimed as marks. Some firms have responded by resorting to ever-more-unusual brand names so as to avoid trademark disputes. Scholars have proposed solutions ranging from raising registration fees to narrowing the scope of trademark rights.

In this Article, we frame trademark law’s governance of “linguistic space” as a balancing act between what we …

Doctor-Patient Communication: The Experiences Of Black Caribbean Women Patients With Diabetes, Rosanne Paul-Bruno Jan 2020

Doctor-Patient Communication: The Experiences Of Black Caribbean Women Patients With Diabetes, Rosanne Paul-Bruno

Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation was designed to examine the verbal and non-verbal communication experiences of Black Caribbean diabetic women patients with their doctors, in order to provide a better understanding of the essential aspects of doctor- patient communication and their experiences as they managed their condition. Black Caribbean women have been disproportionately impacted by medical conditions such as diabetes. It has been a documented fact that minorities experience disparities in the health care system at different levels and doctor-patient communication is no exception. Poor doctor-patient communication has been known to hinder patients’ health outcomes, and therefore warrants such studies to increase …

Academic Communities Of Engagement: An Expansive Lens For Examining Support Structures In Blended And Online Learning, Jered Borup, Charles R. Graham, Richard E. West, Leanna Archambault, Kristian J. Spring

Faculty Publications

In this article we share the Academic Communities of Engagement (ACE) framework, which describes a student’s ability to engage affectively, behaviorally, and cognitively in an online or blended course independently and with support. Based on Vygotsky’s (Mind in society: the development of higher psychological processes, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1978) zone of proximal development, the framework examines how a student’s ability to engage in online or blended courses increases with support from two types of communities. The course community is organized and facilitated by those associated with the course or program. The personal community is comprised of actors not officially …

Purpose

This study examined differences in selected acoustic measures of speech and voice according to age and sex and across families.

Method

Participants included 169 individuals, 79 men and 90 women, from 18 families, ranging in age from 17 to 87 years. Participants reported no history of articulation disorders, stroke or active neurologic disease, or severe-to-profound hearing loss. They read aloud two passages to facilitate examination of the following speech and voice acoustic parameters: fricative spectral moments (center of gravity, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis), the proportion of time spent speaking, mean speaking fundamental frequency, semitone standard deviation (STSD), and …

Papua Under The State Of Exception, Budi Hernawan Jan 2020

Papua Under The State Of Exception, Budi Hernawan

Antropologi Indonesia

The paper argues that in post-Suharto Indonesia, Papua remained under Carl Schmitt's state of exception in which law was suspended to allow executive power of the state to reign with little restrictions. The structure of domination has become much more complex as it no longer consisted of dichotomy of the state authority and Papuan resistance movements. Rather, it colluded with the power of market, the monopoly of the powerful over natural resources, as well as the penetration of Wahhabism that undermined the existing cultural and social cohesion of the Papuans. The domination of the executive power of the state remained …
