The Battle Of Armageddon: The Time Of The Final War And The Role Of Spiritualism And Political Powers, Vanderlei Dorneles

Post Doctoral Fellowship

This book deals with the battle of Armageddon in connection with the fall of Babylon in the literary context of Revelation 16:12-16. Its main focus is about when starts the crucial moment of the last battle between Christ and Satan with the involvement of all the powers on earth. The discussion begins from the assumption that since the 1950s a new understanding has been developed that retakes the Adventist pioneers’ view according which Armageddon is essentially a spiritual or religious battle. The point in discussion is whether Armageddon will start after or before the sixth plague and when the preparations …

Towards A Biblical And Missiological Model Of Cross-Cultural Contextualization Among Chinese Immigrants In "Barrio Chino" Duarte Of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Samuel Telemaque

Dissertations DIS

This study examines the challenge of contextualizing the gospel to Chinese immigrants in the Dominican Republic. Chinese people have been migrating to the Dominican Republic, mainly from Guangdong and Fujian, since the early 1960s. The immigrant population grew to appropriately 50,000 in the 1990s. In spite of this steady growth in population, Adventist leaders have not been able to influence Chinese immigrants to appreciate the gospel and to make decisions to begin a journey toward Christ. This study examines this missiological challenge.

The purpose of this study is to develop a model of contextualization for presenting the gospel to Chinese …

The Cheirographon And Christ: Recent Scholarly Findings, Ron Du Preez Jan 2020

The Cheirographon And Christ: Recent Scholarly Findings, Ron Du Preez

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

In his Anchor Bible Dictionary article on “Exegesis,” Douglas Stuart expounded on issues vital for an analysis, such as being undertaken in this essay: In all lexical study, it is imperative that the meaning in the present context be given precedence over all other considerations. The fact that a word may be used 99 percent of the time it is found in ancient writings to mean one thing is essentially irrelevant if in the context of the biblical passage under study it is used to mean something else. Any author may choose to use even a common word in an …

The Contributions Of Cyrus, Darius I, And Artaxerxes I To The Decree To Restore And Build Jerusalem, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 2020

The Contributions Of Cyrus, Darius I, And Artaxerxes I To The Decree To Restore And Build Jerusalem, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The question in Daniel 9:25 of who issued the “commandment,” “word,” “decree,” or “command to restore and build Jerusalem,” (NKJV)1 , has occupied Bible scholars for centuries. Three major interpretations have emerged about the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. The first view states that the decree was issued by the Persian King Cyrus the Great (reigned 559-530 BC). The second view was that King Darius I (reigned 522-486 BC) issued the decree. The third view associates the decree with King Artaxerxes I Longimanus (reigned 465-425 BC). Today most scholars hold to the first or second view, the traditional Adventist view supports …

A Story To Tell… How To Integrate The Three Modes Of Communication Through A Story Time Program In French, Frederique Grim

The Coastal Review

Bilingual story time programs found in local community libraries not only benefit children, they can also serve a need for L2 college students: the development of their communicative skills in an authentic environment. In addition to linguistic benefits, experiential learning has proven to prepare students for real-world skills, such as networking, mock professional experience and a sense of community engagement. This paper recounts how a world language story time program supports L2 learners’ three modes of communication, as articulated by ACTFL, and necessary for language development. Based on students’ perceptions, this study highlights their increase in motivation and confidence in …

Canadian Immersion Students’ Investment In French, Kelle L. Marshall, Wendy D. Bokhorst-Heng

All Faculty Open Access Publications

French second language (FSL) education, including the option of one-way French immersion, is mandated for majority-language Anglophone children in New Brunswick, Canada’s only officially bilingual province. Language ideological debates in the province surrounding official English-French bilingualism led us to investigate adolescent majority-language immersion students’ investment in French, the co-official minority language, using Darvin and Norton’s (2015) tripartite (capital, ideology, identity) model. We discuss 3 student profiles, drawing on data collected from multimodal focus groups conducted among 8th grade French immersion students. Our analysis reveals a dominance of neoliberal ideologies in these students’ investment in French rendering it imbalanced and largely …

“Rape Is A Four-Letter Word”: Psychosis, Sexual Assault, And Abortion In The 2012 Election, Sarah Stone Watt

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Republican candidates made headlines during the 2012 election for their offensive statements regarding rape when defending a comprehensive ban on abortion. Using Lacan’s theory of psychosis, this article exposes unconscious rhetorical structures that may have contributed to the repetition of those gaffes even after the Party advised all comments, during and after candidates’ attempts to retract their inaccurate statements, was the result of a foreclosure in the minds of some candidates. The discursive structure of their comments provides evidence that some candidates were unable to reconcile white patriarchal subjectivity with the inability to protect against rape.

Brief introductions to the theories used are provided with links to existing scholarship that informs theoretical leanings. A scholarly case is made for the significance of understanding the origin and lifecycle of shame, as well the importance of differentiating between early relational trauma shame (understood as an “inside out” experience), and a later, socially informed “outside in” experience. An argument is made for how shame “attaches” …

The Impact Of Climate Change On Cultural Security, Dominika Krupocin, Jesse Krupocin

Journal of Strategic Security

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges and most pressing issues faced by humanity in the modern era. Extreme weather events, changes to world ecosystems, species extinction, disruption of animal and human migration, resource shortages, socio-economic concerns, outbreaks and pandemics, as well as domestic and international conflicts represent only a few select potential climate change consequences. Regrettably, when considering the issues pertinent to climate change, one of the oft-overlooked areas is cultural security. Rising sea levels will lead to some of the world’s islands and coastal cities essentially being erased from Earth, resulting in the destruction, and possibly even …

Self-Other Encounters And Ordeals Of Aspiration Among Young Moroccan Immigrants In Spain, Maisa C. Taha

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

North African youth who join their parents in Spain in childhood or adolescence face challenges unlike those of the older generation. Moving through institutional spaces and processes, from public school to post-secondary training and work, first-generation youth exercise cultural and linguistic bridging capacities while facing continual challenges as representatives of a racially stigmatized minority. This article focuses on life story narratives from Moroccan young people living in the southeast municipality of El Ejido since the late 1990s to highlight how Self-Other encounters ‒ a well-established framework in Maghrebine ethnography ‒ and goals of upward mobility shape experiences of coming-of-age in …

Investigating The Relationship Between Individual Differences And Island Sensitivity, Catherine Pham, Lauren Covey, Alison Gabriele, Saad Aldosari, Robert Fiorentino

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

It is well-attested that native speakers tend to give low acceptability ratings to sentences that involve movement from within islands, yet the source of island effects remains an active debate. The grammatical account posits that island effects result from syntactic constraints on wh-movement, whereas the resource-limitation view posits that low ratings emerge due to processing-related constraints on the parser, such that islands themselves present processing bottlenecks. The current study addresses this debate by investigating the relationship between island sensitivity and individual differences in cognitive abilities, as it has been argued that the two views make distinct predictions regarding whether a …

Incivility As Identity, Melissa Mortazavi Jan 2020

Incivility As Identity, Melissa Mortazavi

Faculty Articles

Incivility can undermine the legal profession’s work and effectiveness. However, existing scholarship, focused on explaining lawyer incivility as an overextension of zealous advocacy, poor training, or a business-driven model of lawyering, has misconceived a key facet of incivility. Prevailing wisdom largely neglects that lawyers use incivility to react and position themselves within the sociopolitical norms of society in which they live. Civility (or the lack thereof) in the legal profession, may be less about clients and economic pressures than about lawyers affirming their political, class, and gender identities. Once the legal profession recognizes that civility is significantly about lawyers affirming …

José Rizal And Benito Pérez Galdós: Writing Spanish Identity In Pascale Casanova’S World Republic Of Letters, Aaron C. Castroverde

Faculty and Staff Works

This article will examine the relationship between Casanova’s World Republic of Lettersand its critical importance, demonstrating the false dilemma of anti-colonial resistance as either a nationalist or cosmopolitan phenomenon. Her contribution to the field gives scholars a tool for theorizing anti-colonial literature thus paving the way for a new conceptualization of the ‘nation’ itself. As a case study, we will look at the novels of the Filipino writer José Rizal and the Spanish novelist Benito Pérez Galdós.

In Origin of the Work of Art, Heidegger presents an evocative claim about the way the Temple to Athena on the Acropolis, opens a world rich with meaning and resonant with significance that orients the Athenian people within reality thus allowing their relations to others and to nature to appear as meaningful and ultimately nourishing. In other words, the Temple, like all great works of art, opens a world that is also a home. This article reviews the import of Heidegger’s reflection on monumental art, but we quickly turn to the principle objection to Heidegger’s thought, which is that the …
