Ancient Literary Criticism And Major Structural Relationships: A Comparative Analysis, Matthew R. Peterson, Dain Alexander Smith Jan 2020

Ancient Literary Criticism And Major Structural Relationships: A Comparative Analysis, Matthew R. Peterson, Dain Alexander Smith

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

The texts of the New Testament (NT) emerged during an era that produced robust literary and rhetorical criticism. This article draws from works produced during that period to investigate similarities and differences between the figures discussed by ancient literary theorists and the Major Structural Relationships (MSRs) identified by David R. Bauer and Robert A. Traina. Ultimately, this article reveals that the MSRs proposed in their Inductive Bible Study (IBS) handbook are not merely an invention of modern literary critical reading strategies but reflect devices incorporated into ancient literature and identified and discussed by ancient literary theorists.

What Snippets Feel: Depression, Search, And Snippets, Ashlee Milton, Maria Soledad Pera Jan 2020

What Snippets Feel: Depression, Search, And Snippets, Ashlee Milton, Maria Soledad Pera

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mental health disorders (MHD) is a rising, yet stigmatized, topic in the United States. Individuals suffering from MHD are slowing starting to overcome this stigma by discussing how technology affects them. Researchers have explored behavioral nuances that emerge from interactions of individuals affected by MHD with persuasive technologies, mainly social media. Yet, there is a gap in the analysis pertaining to search engines, another persuasive technology, which is part of their everyday lives. In this paper, we report the results of an initial exploratory analysis conducted to understand the sentiment/emotion profiles of search engines handling the information needs of searchers …

The Contrasting Fates Of French Canadian And Indigenous Constitutionalism: British North America, 1760-1867, Philip Girard Jan 2020

The Contrasting Fates Of French Canadian And Indigenous Constitutionalism: British North America, 1760-1867, Philip Girard

Articles & Book Chapters

In the century after the fall of New France, both Indigenous peoples of Canada and French Canadians could be described as colonised peoples. Yet the treatment of each group's pre-existing laws and the ways in which each found its constitutional demands recognised (or not) varied considerably. In spite of significant rebellions in 1837-1838, French Canadians went on to achieve a high degree of autonomy within the province of Quebec in the British North America Act 1867. Meanwhile, intercultural legal arrangements with Indigenous peoples, such as the Covenant Chain, which could be termed constitutional, were gradually undermined, ignored and forgotten. This …

Reimagining Schools: A Descriptive Analysis Of Effective Practices For Educating Marginalized Students, Tamela D. Brown Jan 2020

Reimagining Schools: A Descriptive Analysis Of Effective Practices For Educating Marginalized Students, Tamela D. Brown

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Educational equity is the most imperative civil rights issue we face today. While the demands and interjections of social movements have strengthened many practices, structures, and laws related to educational equity, the ultimate shift in the tide has yet to be fully realized. Quality education is still not fully accessible to marginalized populations, specifically Black students who are also considered low socioeconomic status. The educational system in the United States has historically imposed segregation, discrimination, and other various forms of oppression as a means to limit educational access for people of color. The results of such depravities are evidenced by …

The Sherman Act Is A No-Fault Monopolization Statute: A Textualist Demonstration, Robert H. Lande, Richard O. Zerbe Jan 2020

The Sherman Act Is A No-Fault Monopolization Statute: A Textualist Demonstration, Robert H. Lande, Richard O. Zerbe

American University Law Review

The drafters of the Sherman Act originally designed Section 2 to impose sanctions on all monopolies and attempts to monopolize, regardless whether the firm had engaged in anticompetitive conduct. This conclusion emerges from the first ever textualist analysis of the language in the statute, a form of interpretation originally performed only by Justice Scalia but now increasingly used by the Supreme Court, including in its recent Bostock decision.

Following Scalia’s methodology, this Article analyzes contemporaneous dictionaries, legal treatises, and cases and demonstrates that when the Sherman Act was passed, the word “monopolize” simply meant that someone had acquired a monopoly. …

Struggling Readers And Dyslexic Readers: A Comparative Study Of Student Intervention Files, Katherine Casey Spengler Jan 2020

Struggling Readers And Dyslexic Readers: A Comparative Study Of Student Intervention Files, Katherine Casey Spengler

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The study utilized document analysis to analyze the clinical reading intervention files of 44 students, kindergarten through grade 3, from two afterschool literacy clinics, an urban, community-based clinic and a suburban, private clinic. Document analysis of the files of 21 students with or at risk for dyslexia and 23 struggling readers provided data for thematic analysis of the labels used to describe readers …

A Descriptive Multicultural Phenomenology For Culturally Responsive Leadership, Christopher J. Kazanjian, David Rutledge, Sandra M. Gandarilla Jan 2020

A Descriptive Multicultural Phenomenology For Culturally Responsive Leadership, Christopher J. Kazanjian, David Rutledge, Sandra M. Gandarilla

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

As public schools in the United States continue to diversify in culture, educational leaders committed to multicultural education seek qualitative research methodologies for understanding phenomena in order to build culturally responsive leadership initiatives and interventions. This paper argues that a phenomenological research methodology is appropriate and relevant to understand cultural phenomena in the 21st century school. To serve this, the authors elaborate on a descriptive multicultural phenomenological research methodology for educational leaders. A phenomenological framework positions educational leaders to understand the nature and essence of personal experience. This approach will help educational leaders better understand the experiences of the diverse …

Structural And Lexical Methods For Auditing Biomedical Terminologies, Rashmie Abeysinghe Jan 2020

Structural And Lexical Methods For Auditing Biomedical Terminologies, Rashmie Abeysinghe

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Biomedical terminologies serve as knowledge sources for a wide variety of biomedical applications including information extraction and retrieval, data integration and management, and decision support. Quality issues of biomedical terminologies, if not addressed, could affect all downstream applications that use them as knowledge sources. Therefore, Terminology Quality Assurance (TQA) has become an integral part of the terminology management lifecycle. However, identification of potential quality issues is challenging due to the ever-growing size and complexity of biomedical terminologies. It is time-consuming and labor-intensive to manually audit them and hence, automated TQA methods are highly desirable. In this dissertation, systematic and scalable …

Decoding Gender In The Selected Works Of Salman Rushdie, Zubaidah Binti Mohamed Shaburdin Jan 2020

Decoding Gender In The Selected Works Of Salman Rushdie, Zubaidah Binti Mohamed Shaburdin

Theses

This thesis examines how ideologies such as feminism and patriarchy operate within language by providing a detailed analysis of five of Salman Rushdie’s novels, Midnight’s Children, Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Ground Beneath Her Feet and The Enchantress of Florence. It is concerned with the changes in Rushdie’s use of language and the effect of this on the way gender is constructed in the selected texts. His novels offer a critique of contemporary Western culture’s understanding of gender, identity, politics, philosophy and religion. Although Rushdean scholarship is often concerned with identity politics, this thesis expands the discussion by critically engaging …

Speaking The Truth: Supporting Authentic Advocacy With Professional Identity Formation, Laura A. Webb Jan 2020

Speaking The Truth: Supporting Authentic Advocacy With Professional Identity Formation, Laura A. Webb

Law Faculty Publications

When law students are asked to articulate legal rules in a persuasive communication such as a brief, they may experience internal tension. Their version of the rule, as framed to benefit a particular client’s position, may be different from the way they would articulate the rule if they were not taking on an advocate’s role. The conflict between those two versions of a legal rule leads some students to wonder if advocacy itself is deceptive, if an advocate’s role requires one to sacrifice ethics for success, and if ancient Greek philosophers were correct when they derided persuasive communication as “trickery …

The Hunter And The Hunted: Kipling's Challenge To Human Exceptionalism In "The White Seal" And "Quiquern", Jessica Marie Robbins Jan 2020

The Hunter And The Hunted: Kipling's Challenge To Human Exceptionalism In "The White Seal" And "Quiquern", Jessica Marie Robbins

All ETDs from UAB

Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Books are some of the most well-known stories about nonhuman animals from the Victorian period, but rarely have scholars discussed this text without privileging the Mowgli stories or Kipling’s well-known colonialist alignments. In this thesis, I have challenged this scholarly tendency, showing how Kipling has paid careful attention to his nonhuman characters and given them characteristics that model the most current scientific information available at the time. My thesis argues that two of Kipling’s stories in particular, “The White Seal” and “Quiquern,” challenge the notion of human exceptionalism and force readers to confront the unsettling parallels …

A mathematical text is multimodal with different modes of communication, namely verbal language, algebraic notation, visual forms and gestures. This paper aims to compare and discuss the ideational meaning of visual forms in worked examples from Malaysian and Singaporean Grade Seven Mathematics textbooks on Lines and Angles. There are two structures in ideational meaning, namely narrative (with action) and conceptual (without action). Action diagrams represent ongoing mathematical activity whereas, without action diagrams represent mathematical objects. Document analysis and coding were carried on 57 geometrical diagrams found in the textbooks used in a 20-year period. The properties to identify a narratively …

Pre-University Students' Perceptual Flexibility With Mathematical Elements, Chee Soon Low, Cheng Meng Chew

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Do students see things the same as what mathematics teachers have anticipated? In a light-hearted and inquisitive mode, two fundamental mathematical tasks were administered to 147 pre-university students who newly joined a private college for enrolment into various programs. One task simply required the participants to state the variables in a linear equation and the other attempted to elicit what the participants would naturally perceive from a diagram featuring a straight line crossing the coordinate axes. This study aimed to examine the participants’ perceptual flexibility with mathematical elements without explicit hints. The emergent textual responses were qualitatively classified and the …

Leo Tolstoy And Writers Of World Literature Literary Reflections – Elchin Efendiyev, Gulnara Hasanova Jan 2020

Leo Tolstoy And Writers Of World Literature Literary Reflections – Elchin Efendiyev, Gulnara Hasanova

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

It is a study of literary interaction questions and the identification of mutual enrichment patterns that currently acquire particular significance. The concept of foreign literary experience becomes ever more profound and diverse and is realized by a creative rethinking (not imitation or adoption) of another literature's achievements. This paper aims to identify the profound influence of world literature on Tolstoy and vice-versa: the influence his creative works had on European literature. The paper shows the need to study the originality of Tolstoy’s artistic legacy's foreign reception and, therefore, complement the overall picture of perception and functioning of the writer’s creation …

Heroism In The Age Of Consumerism: The Emergence Of A Moral Don Quixote In John Updike’S “A & P”, Zakarya Bezdoode, Eshaq Bezdoode Jan 2020

Heroism In The Age Of Consumerism: The Emergence Of A Moral Don Quixote In John Updike’S “A & P”, Zakarya Bezdoode, Eshaq Bezdoode

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper analyzes John Updike’s short story “A & P” in the light of Max Weber’s notion of moral decision-making. A prominent contemporary American story-writer and literary critic, Updike has devoted his fiction to subjects' rational and moral problems in the contemporary consumerist society. Updike’s lifelong probing into the middle classes' lives is a body of fiction that raises questions about determinism, moral decision, and social responsibility, among others. “A & P” is a revealing example of such fiction and one among Updike’s most frequently anthologized short stories. The story, titled after a nationwide American shopping mall in the early …

Neo-Orientalism Or Neo-Imperialism? Islamism In A Globalized World: Prayers For The Assassin As A Case Study Of Contemporary American Novel, Mubarak Altwaiji Jan 2020

Neo-Orientalism Or Neo-Imperialism? Islamism In A Globalized World: Prayers For The Assassin As A Case Study Of Contemporary American Novel, Mubarak Altwaiji

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper deals with some aspects of neo-orientalism in the modern American novel highlighted in much conventional political and literary studies and conceptualized both as a composite of cultural studies and a western ideology. When applied to the post 9/11 American novel analysis, neo-orientalism uses terrorism as a significant aspect of a much broader reaction to Islamists' threats living in the United States and Europe. It is common in neo-orientalist discourse about extremism to refer to Islamism as a threat to nations and therefore, it is important to find how the American novel represents the Muslims and how vigorously acts …

Improved Spatial Information Based Semisupervised Classification Of Remote Sensing Images, Neeta S. Kothari, Saroj K. Meher, Ganapati Panda

Journal Articles

Motivation in the use of semisupervised learning method is because of its ability to strategically explore and use abundantly available unlabeled samples along with the limited number of labeled samples, as seen in the remote sensing (RS) imagery. In this direction, the present article proposes a semisupervised classification model with spatial information based self-learning methodology to classify land covers in RS images. The model uses granular neural network (GNN) as the base classifier because of its customizable network architecture that is functionally interpretable and costs less computational complexity. Architecture of GNN is governed by fuzzy if-then rules that are generated …

State Action And Gender (In)Equality: The Untapped Power Of Washington's Equal Rights Amendment, Maria Yvonne Hodgins Jan 2020

State Action And Gender (In)Equality: The Untapped Power Of Washington's Equal Rights Amendment, Maria Yvonne Hodgins

Washington Law Review Online

Washington’s Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a powerful legal tool. Its sweeping, protective language triggers the application of an absolute standard of review—a level of review even higher than strict scrutiny. Yet the ERA is underutilized by litigants seeking protection against gender-based discrimination. This may be due to the inconsistencies in the Washington State Supreme Court’s state action jurisprudence. Though the ERA includes the phrasing “under the law,” its plain language does not necessarily support a finding of a state action requirement. The state action doctrine is grounded in federalism and separation of power concerns that are not present at …
