Approaches To Lifespan Writing Research: Generating An Actionable Coherence, Ryan J. Dippre, Talinn Phillips

Writing Commons Open Access Books

This edited collection builds on the three themes that emerged from the 2018 inaugural lifespan writing conference—identity, society, and theory—to further the study of writing through the lifespan. The contributors to this collection provide a framework within which the reader can develop a dynamic, interdisciplinary, multifaceted understanding of the limits and possibilities of studying lifespan writing. Recognizing that such research requires methodological rigor and flexibility as well as theoretical precision and adaptability, Approaches to Lifespan Writing Research draws on a range of methodological and theoretical approaches, from autoethnography to longitudinal structural equation modeling. This methodological and theoretical flexibility reflects the …

Trade Multilateralism And U.S. National Security: The Making Of The Gatt Security Exceptions, Mona Pinchis-Paulsen

Michigan Journal of International Law

Today, there are an unprecedented number of disputes at the World Trade Organization (“WTO”) involving national security. The dramatic rise in trade disputes involving national security has resuscitated debate over the degree of discretion afforded to WTO Members as to when and how to invoke Article XXI, the Security Exception, of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (“GATT”), with binding effect. The goal of this article is to shed light on contemporary questions and concerns involving national security and international trade, particularly questions involving the appropriate invocation of Article XXI GATT, through careful attention to the article’s historical context. …

On Some Moral Implications Of Linguistic Narrativism Theory, Natan Elgabsi, Bennett Gilbert Jan 2020

On Some Moral Implications Of Linguistic Narrativism Theory, Natan Elgabsi, Bennett Gilbert

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay we consider the moral claims of one branch of non-realist theory known as linguistic narrativism theory. By highlighting the moral implications of linguistic narrativism theory, we argue that the “moral vision” expressed by this theory can entail, at worst, undesirable moral agnosticism if not related to a transcendental and supra-personal normativity in our moral life. With its appeal to volitionism and intuitionism, the ethical sensitivity of this theory enters into difficulties brought about by several internal tensions as to what morality and moral judgements involve. We contend that the proponents of linguistic narrativism theory must strongly recognize …

Teachers Are: Analyzing The Metaphors Of Pre-Service Educators, Matt Ridenour Jan 2020

Teachers Are: Analyzing The Metaphors Of Pre-Service Educators, Matt Ridenour

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Metaphors are often used by in-service educators to describe themselves and their work in the classroom. These metaphors can articulate in-service teachers’ fundamental dispositions and provide the vehicle for conceptualizing teaching practices. Pre-service educators (those engaged in preparation to enter the teaching vocation), however, are a different population for whom metaphors represent relatively untested assumptions about the classroom and the practices that pervade it. These metaphors should be considered an asset which, if effectively utilized, can aid in the work of teacher preparation. To that end, this study employed the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff & Johnson (1980) within the …

Narrative Identity In Online Spaces: Selves In 280 Characters Or Less, Adam Louis Paul Jan 2020

Narrative Identity In Online Spaces: Selves In 280 Characters Or Less, Adam Louis Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The internet age has alloindividuals a degree of self-expression that is more expansive than any other period in history. Through the emergence of social networking sites (henceforth SNS), individuals can tell their stories to their entire social network with unparalleled ease. It is difficult to overstate how far-reaching the implications of this form of widespread communication are with respect to interpersonal communication. Despite this, little work has been done considering how we should think about self-presentation on SNS. The goal of this paper is two-fold: (1) I will defend the position that our narrative identities are constituted by a set …

Illiberalism And Authoritarianism In The American States, James A. Gardner Jan 2020

Illiberalism And Authoritarianism In The American States, James A. Gardner

American University Law Review

Federalism contemplates subnational variation, but in the United States, the nature and significance of that variation has long been contested. In light of the recent turn, globally and nationally, toward authoritarianism, and the concurrent sharp decline in public support not merely for democracy but also for the philosophical liberalism on which democracy rests, it is necessary to discard or to substantially revise prior accounts of the nature of state-to-state variation in the United States. All such accounts implicitly presuppose a common commitment, across the political spectrum, to the core tenets of democratic liberalism, and consequently assume that subnational variations in …

Growing More Than Coffee: Global Narratives And National Reconciliation Within The Rwandan Coffee Industry, Katie Grandelli Jan 2020

Growing More Than Coffee: Global Narratives And National Reconciliation Within The Rwandan Coffee Industry, Katie Grandelli

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to understand the Rwandan coffee industry following the genocide of 1994. The two major questions that are asked of the Rwandan coffee industry are the roles that it plays in reconciliation efforts and in global perception. The data examined in this thesis ranges from the marketing strategies of internationally popular coffee brands to an interview at a local coffee shop that specializes in Rwandan coffee products. This research engages in discussions of consumable goods as economic stimulants in post-conflict situations and indicators of neoliberal buying behavior on the part of consumers. Final analysis within this thesis suggests …

Rural Npo Leadership In Time Of Volatility: A Study Of Nonprofit Organizations In South Dakota, Mellissa Heermann Jan 2020

Rural Npo Leadership In Time Of Volatility: A Study Of Nonprofit Organizations In South Dakota, Mellissa Heermann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory study determined the legitimacy of the leadership gap in Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs) in South Dakota by collecting quantitative and qualitative data and then comparing the results with national studies. It aimed to understand if NPOs were more vulnerable to leadership transitions and the costs associated with them. It also provided additional insight for future research opportunities. While there were studies on larger NPOs, such as the United Way, or NPOs in more highly populated regions, there was a gap in research for rural NPOs that potentially would not be financially able to research these trends on their own. …

Study Of The Health Needs Of Older Women Experiencing Homelessness In The Perth Metropolitan Area, Gloria Sutherland Jan 2020

Study Of The Health Needs Of Older Women Experiencing Homelessness In The Perth Metropolitan Area, Gloria Sutherland

Theses

Women aged over 50 years represent the most rapidly growing cohort of the Australian homeless population. Despite an increasing awareness of older Australian women being at risk of homelessness, little is known of how their health contributes to, and changes due to their homelessness. Drawing on the principles of the World Health Organisation’s social determinants of health, this study sought to investigate the personal life circumstances of older homeless women who live in the Perth metropolitan area, their healthcare needs and to identify any barriers to their accessing healthcare.

The study used a convergent mixed methods approach using quantitative and …

The Confluence Of Short-Term Immersion And Intercultural Competence: Positive Impacts For Australian Preservice Teachers, Julie Maakrun Jan 2020

The Confluence Of Short-Term Immersion And Intercultural Competence: Positive Impacts For Australian Preservice Teachers, Julie Maakrun

Theses

Increasing global migration across geographical, linguistic and cultural borders has resulted in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms in Australia. In response, teacher education programs are exploring ways to enhance preservice teachers’ ability to engage with cultural diversity appropriately and effectively. One way is through the provision of short-term immersion programs. As experiential learning, such programs allow opportunities for students to be embedded in the breadth and depth of human experience, to better understand themselves and the ‘cultural other’. These programs also enable an examination of personal beliefs, habits, and values, which may assist students in moving from a rigid dualist …

Exploring The Validity Of Script Concordance Testing To Assess The Clinical Reasoning Of Medical Students, Micahel Sh Wan Jan 2020

Exploring The Validity Of Script Concordance Testing To Assess The Clinical Reasoning Of Medical Students, Micahel Sh Wan

Theses

Assessment of clinical reasoning is often challenging, as it is a complex process of thinking and decision making. Script Concordance Testing (SCT), using authentic clinical scenarios with diagnostic or management uncertainties, has been developed to assess clinical reasoning. As SCT is a relatively new assessment modality, more empirical evidence is needed to support the validity of SCT scores.

This thesis examines key aspects of the validity of SCT scores in the assessment of the clinical reasoning ability of medical undergraduates. A review of the current literature informs the use, design and standard setting of SCT, as well as evidence for …

“There Is Subjectivity, There Is Bias”: Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions Of Equity In Data Literacy For Teaching, Heather Whitesides, Jori S. Beck Jan 2020

“There Is Subjectivity, There Is Bias”: Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions Of Equity In Data Literacy For Teaching, Heather Whitesides, Jori S. Beck

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Research on equity in data literacy for teaching has lagged yet is of critical importance to ensuring new teachers are prepared to serve diverse students. Our multiple case study conveyed four elementary teacher candidates’ understandings of this construct and their reaction to instruction in this domain. Data collection included interviews, item analysis, and concept maps. Our participants developed a broader view of data by the end of the course, but often did not recognize inequitable data practices like tracking which conveys a misalignment between beliefs and practices. We explored implications for policy and practice based on our findings.

Based on questionnaires completed by 40 parents and in-depth, open-ended interviews with 5 parents, this study specifically focuses on Korean parents residing in an area with a low Korean immigrant population and how they perceive, foster, and advocate for their children's Heritage Language (HL) learning. The findings show that parents play crucial roles as active advocates of their children's HL learning and positive belief in HL …

"We Need To Be In The Classroom More”: Veteran Teachers’ Views On Teacher Preparation And Retention, Jori S. Beck, Christina Lunsmann, Tiberio Garza Jan 2020

"We Need To Be In The Classroom More”: Veteran Teachers’ Views On Teacher Preparation And Retention, Jori S. Beck, Christina Lunsmann, Tiberio Garza

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Annual teacher attrition hovers around 8% and causes of teacher attrition have been studied widely. However, more needs to be known about specific aspects of teacher preparation that can foster retention. The goal of this study was to understand the perspectives of veteran teachers regarding retention. This investigation employed semi-structured interviews with teachers who graduated from a south western university and who have persisted in their teaching careers in a large, urban school district. Our analyses conveyed that rich field experiences and particular characteristics of mentor teachers can foster retention; however, these persisters also persevered through inauthentic teacher preparation experiences.
