School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

What do engineering students in 2020 need to know about energy to be successful in the workplace and contribute to addressing society’s issues related to energy? Beginning with this question, we have designed a new course for second-year engineering students. Drawing on the interdisciplinary backgrounds of our diverse team of engineering instructors, we aimed to provide an introduction to energy for all engineering students that challenged the dominant discourse in engineering by valuing students’ lived experiences and bringing in examples situated in different cultural contexts. An Integrated Approach to Energy was offered for the first time in Spring 2020 for …

Bisexuality, Intersectionality, And The Bechdel Test In Jane The Virgin, Catherine E. Mallory Ms.

Communication Senior Capstones

Abstract

For this project I have looked at the show Jane the Virgin through a critical lens, and analyzed the characters in the show, the stereotypes portrayed about Latino culture, the stereotypes towards bisexuality, how intersectionality is involved, and the Bechdel-Wallace test. Throughout this paper I will examine a few specific characters and look at how stereotypes, of certain kinds, are portrayed, and how others are completely turned on it’s head. I apply terms such as intersectionality, stereotype, and sexuality to the characters and what they go through, throughout the course of the show. I have found that there are …

Mankind, Humans, Congressman: It’S All Inclusive, Right Guys?, Rachael Thacker Jan 2020

Mankind, Humans, Congressman: It’S All Inclusive, Right Guys?, Rachael Thacker

Communication Senior Capstones

This paper takes a look at research surrounding the use of gendered language and how it impacts occupations and careers from ages as young as grade school, and all the way into adulthood. The use of gender-fair language creates a more gender inclusive attitude towards traditionally male occupations. The masculine generic language used in our culture perpetuates gender stereotypes among children as young as six and continues on into adulthood. Changing the language to include both women and men allows for both to self-identify beyond the stereotypical occupations and see themselves as successful. This can be seen in how children …

The Influence Of Social And Political Demographics On National English Support Or Opposition, Kallie Delis Jan 2020

The Influence Of Social And Political Demographics On National English Support Or Opposition, Kallie Delis

Theses & ETDs

Although over two decades old, the issue of establishing English as the national language of the United States remains prevalent to this day. With heightened tensions surrounding incoming immigrant and refugee populations, national English still has contemporary significance. Many reactions have been to further distinguish what being an American entails – speaking English being one of those proposed standards. From a social-focused perspective, this research analyzes how an individual’s other political and social opinions may influence their positions on national English. To measure this, I pulled variables from the American National Election Survey in the year 2000 that appeared to …

Professional Identity Formation Through Pro Bono Revealed Through Conversation Analysis, Linda F. Smith Jan 2020

Professional Identity Formation Through Pro Bono Revealed Through Conversation Analysis, Linda F. Smith

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Law school is supposed to teach legal analysis and lawyering skills as well as mold law students’ professional identities. Pro Bono work provides an opportunity for law students to use their legal knowledge and skills and to develop their identities as emerging legal professionals. As important as both pro bono work and identity formation are, there has been very little research regarding how pro bono contributes to students’ identity formation. This paper utilizes a data set of over forty student-client consultations at a pro bono brief advice clinic that have been recorded and transcribed. It uses conversation analysis to study …

Special Topics In Natural Language Processing: Mwe Identification, Opinion Question Answering And Summarization, Aishwarya Ashok

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the use of computers for the analysis of text. The approaches used to solve problems in NLP has transitioned from human tagging to statistical methods and currently many of the approaches make use of techniques from Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some of the text-based problems in NLP include question answering, summarization, and text-based recommendation systems. The amount of text data that is available is increasing by the day. With the growing size of text data, the research in NLP needs more sophisticated methods than traditional statistical methods. Current day approaches make use …

Loss For Words: An Investigation Of The English Nature Vocabulary, Margaret C. Luthin Jan 2020

Loss For Words: An Investigation Of The English Nature Vocabulary, Margaret C. Luthin

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This research assesses the state of English nature vocabulary in Montana, defined here as words and terms relating to local species, weather, and topography. Studies have shown declining nature knowledge among English speakers as well as a marked decrease in the usage of nature words in English popular culture throughout the 20th century, and while research across disciplines points to a growing disconnect between humans and their environment, researchers have yet to investigate the role of vocabulary and language attrition in humans’ changing experience of nature. This study develops a new survey instrument to gather vocabulary data from Montanans, aiming …

International Law, Steven R. Ratner Jan 2020

International Law, Steven R. Ratner

Book Chapters

International law is central to both the discourse and practice of global justice. It offers a critical institutional site for transforming theories about global justice into binding rules with institutional enforcement; many of its rules have strong claims to morality; and it can offer insights into the nature of just arrangements at the international level. This chapter first introduces the key participants and fundamental norms of international law that respond to the various claims of those participants. Second, it elaborates on the range of engagement by international legal scholarship with questions of global justice. Legal scholars have incorporated concepts of …

The Forgotten History Of Japanese Women’S History And The Rise Of Women And Gender History In The Academy, Marnie S. Anderson Jan 2020

The Forgotten History Of Japanese Women’S History And The Rise Of Women And Gender History In The Academy, Marnie S. Anderson

History: Faculty Publications

Japanese men began writing Japanese women’s history over a century ago, although the academic field of women’s history did not become established until more recent decades. This article traces the development of women’s history in both Japan and the Anglophone West by focusing on four distinct moments. I examine how the field evolved and consider some of the key players. Then, I turn to the sometimes-complicated relationship between women’s history and feminism and the rise of gender history. Tracing the absence and presence of women over the past 130 years provides a novel view on the history of Japanese women’s history. …

Black Historical Erasure: A Critical Comparative Analysis In Rosewood And Ocoee, Christelle Ram Jan 2020

Black Historical Erasure: A Critical Comparative Analysis In Rosewood And Ocoee, Christelle Ram

Honors Program Theses

This thesis provides a comparative analysis of Black Historical Erasure in both the cases of Ocoee and Rosewood. Ocoee and Rosewood were both cites of racially motivated programs that led to the exodus of entire African American communities- in both cases however, the events were erased. Utilizing various post-modern texts, this project ultimately analyzes erasure as a force that upholds ideologies of white supremacy. Utilizing the theories of Antonio Gramsci and Karl Marx, this thesis analysis the modus operandi of violence that resulted in erasure as well as the repercussions of erasure. This thesis ultimately indicates that in Rosewood and …

"Becoming-Pite: An Application Of Deleuzian Theory To Crystal Pite’S Choreography, Kyra Laubacher Jan 2020

"Becoming-Pite: An Application Of Deleuzian Theory To Crystal Pite’S Choreography, Kyra Laubacher

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Art destabilizes the human, rupturing the concept of the individual as primary universal organizer. The artist recognizes infinite potential in the virtual as expressed through intensity, something semantically inarticulable but nonetheless accessible via artistic production. Chrystal Pite, contemporary dance choreographer, is one such artist in whose creations the workings of affect make themselves perceptibly clear. We may turn to poststructuralist philosopher Gilles Deleuze and his theories of multiplicity, repetition, and nomadism in order to further understand the work that she has put forth. Pite, through art and affect, reminds us of the human condition of the de-centered individual, and Deleuze’s …

Garifunizando Ambas Américas: Hemispheric Entanglements Of Blackness/Indigeneity/Afrolatinidad, Paul Joseph López Oro

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

Central Americans of African descent are in the margins on the histories of transmigrations and political movements in the isthmus and their diasporas. The absence of Black Central Americans in Latinx Studies and Central American Studies is an epistemological violence inherited from Latin American mestizaje. The insurgence of Afro-Latinx Studies is an intellectual and political response to the erasure and negation of Black people and Blackness in the field of Latinx Studies. In this essay, I map out the political urgency to call for a refashioning of Afrolatinidad that dismantles the dangerous allure of ethno-racial nationalism (i.e., Afro-[insert nation-state]) and …

Conceptualizing The Unspeakable: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Analysis Of Sexual Assault Trauma In Creative Nonfiction, Ariana Ciamaricone Jan 2020

Conceptualizing The Unspeakable: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Analysis Of Sexual Assault Trauma In Creative Nonfiction, Ariana Ciamaricone

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This paper explores the use of conceptual metaphors (CMs) in two works of creative nonfiction, namely Laurie Halse Anderson’s (2019) Shout and Elissa Washuta’s (2014) My Body is a Book of Rules. Anderson’s (2019) poetic memoir centers on her experiences with sexual assault throughout her childhood and the process of writing her young adult novel Speak (1999). Washuta (2014) writes on her experiences with rape and mental illness via prose. Both memoirs detail their authors’ reckoning with the experience of sexual assault, and this paper investigates how trauma narratives attempt to “resolve what cannot be resolved, to generate meaning, …

Mobile Application For Summative Assessment Of Language Literacies In Primary Education In Tanzania, Musa Saimon Jan 2020

Mobile Application For Summative Assessment Of Language Literacies In Primary Education In Tanzania, Musa Saimon

Master of Education

Summative assessment of language literacies in Tanzanian primary education is based on paper-pencil. This kind of assessment limits learners from being assessed in other significant aspects of literacies such as oral, digital, and listening skills, which results in learners‟ lack of proficiency in using language, especially the English language. As an effort to improve the current situation, the present study explored the possibility of using mobile applications in summative language assessment of primary education in Tanzania. The study adopted a qualitative research approach and participatory action research design in which the researcher underwent three stages: reconnaissance, planning, and action. The …

Exploring The Influence Of Language Teachers’ Experiences Of Learning Language On Their Teaching Practices, Paul Kinuthia Mwangi Jan 2020

Exploring The Influence Of Language Teachers’ Experiences Of Learning Language On Their Teaching Practices, Paul Kinuthia Mwangi

Master of Education

Numerous studies have been conducted to understand why teachers teach in the way to do. Whilst a number of reasons have been given, none has been emphatically conclusive about what influences teachers to adopt certain teaching practices. Even though initial teacher preparation has been identified as a core influencing factor, it has also been observed that teachers teach in ways that do not take into account their teacher preparation experiences. This study therefore, explored how Kiswahili and English language teachers’ experiences of learning language have influenced their teaching practices. The study employed a qualitative approach and adopted a narrative inquiry …
