Culturally Responsive Teaching: An Investigation Of Effective Practices For Korean English Language Learners, Kisong Kim
Culturally Responsive Teaching: An Investigation Of Effective Practices For Korean English Language Learners, Kisong Kim
Theses and Dissertations
With Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015, the policymakers continued to emphasize both excellence and equity for the students with high learning standards for their pathways to college (Darrow, 2016). Despite increased attention, national statistics showed that the student achievement gap between ELLs and non-ELLs had not been closed since 1998. To better understand the current status of such student academic achievement gap and provide support to ELLs who were from different cultures, the study incorporated the work of Gay and Ladson-Billings and examined factors influencing student learning. Utilizing a phenomenological methodology, this study was designed to acquire a …
The Potential Of Flipped Learning To Prepare Esl Students For Peer Review, Catherine E. Showalter, Ilka Kostka
The Potential Of Flipped Learning To Prepare Esl Students For Peer Review, Catherine E. Showalter, Ilka Kostka
Journal of Response to Writing
Peer review is frequently used in both first-language (L1) and second-language (L2) writing courses to help students develop reading and writing skills and foster interaction and collaboration. To maximize these benefits in the L2 classroom, instructors should train their students to provide feedback to their peers (Lam, 2010; Rahimi, 2013; Rollinson, 2005). However, sufficient training and practice can require considerable class time. In this teaching article, we detail how we used a flipped learning approach to prepare undergraduate international students to conduct peer review in a university-level English as a Second Language reading and writing course. First, we discuss how …
Fostering Trauma-Informed Schools By Considering The Experiences Of Teachers In Working With Trauma-Exposed Students, Allison A. Stiles
Fostering Trauma-Informed Schools By Considering The Experiences Of Teachers In Working With Trauma-Exposed Students, Allison A. Stiles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High rates of trauma exposure among youth in the United States and the detrimental effects of trauma on students’ psychosocial and academic outcomes are well-established. Such findings have engendered the emergence of trauma-informed schools across the nation. While research regarding trauma-informed schools has understandably focused on the needs of students, shockingly little is known about teachers’ experiences in working with trauma-exposed students. In particular, very few studies have examined the relationship between teachers’ indirect exposure to student trauma and related symptoms of secondary traumatic stress (STS), as well as factors that may predict STS levels or explain variation in the …

Intermarried Couples: Transnationalism, And Racialized Experiences In Denmark And Canada, Rashmi Singla, Hema Ganapathy-Coleman
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Despite an increase in interracial or mixed marriages (intermarriages) globally, the experiences of couples in such marriages are generally under-researched, particularly within psychology. Using a cultural psychological framework and qualitative methods, this paper studies the psychosocial experiences of couples in intermarriages. It focuses on four South Asians in ethnically intermarriages in two settings: two Indian-origin men married to native Danish women in Denmark, and two Indian-origin women married to Euro-American men in Canada. Data from in-depth interviews were subjected to a thematic analysis yielding an array of themes, of which this paper presents the two most dominant themes across the …
What We Can Learn About Multiculturalism From Latin American Psychology, Judith L. Gibbons
What We Can Learn About Multiculturalism From Latin American Psychology, Judith L. Gibbons
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Latin American psychology, although greatly under-represented in international journals, can provide important lessons for international psychologists. Mexican psychologist Rogelio Díaz-Guerrero was one of the first to describe would now be labeled an indigenous psychology. Latin American theorists such as Paolo Freire and Ignacio Martín-Baró have provided frameworks for understanding diversity and multiculturalism among groups with unequal power. Only by critical thinking and critical analysis can we understand and challenge disparate conditions. Relatedly, Latin American psychology often focuses on achieving social justice and solving practical real-world problems. Thus, community and political psychology are strengths of Latin American psychology and have made …

525 North Capitol Avenue, Portland State University. Center For Public Interest Design, Sergio Palleroni, Todd Ferry, Hannah Lopez, Sean Silverstein
Center for Public Interest Design Projects
The 525 N. Capitol Ave was initiated in response to the housing crisis in San Jose, CA. Livability and affordability currently plague Silicon Valley, as many residents are considered rent-burdened -- spending most of their income on housing-related costs. In collaboration with Community Development Partners, this new development will help provide affordable units to families experiencing housing insecurity, chronically homeless veterans, low-income seniors, and those with disabilities; with the idea in mind of creating a thriving, intergenerational community. Other project partners include David Baker Architects (DBA), and CivicMakers, who partnered with the CPID team to help implement the ABCD process, …
Debt Letters: Epistolary Economies In Early Modern England, Laura Kolb
Debt Letters: Epistolary Economies In Early Modern England, Laura Kolb
Publications and Research
This essay tracks the emergence of ‘debt letters’, an epistolary sub-genre in seventeenth-century letter-writing manuals. Debt letters ask for money, offer funds and excuse the inability to make (or repay) loans. The rhetorical strategies evident in sample debt letters point to a cultural emphasis on friendship as a site of financial stability through reciprocal lending. Moreover, these rhetorical strategies serve multiple goals, which at times conflict: the short-term goal of navigating particular debt arrangements, and the long-term goal of maintaining an amicable bond over time.
Buried In Silence: Homosexuality And The Feighner Criteria, Stewart Justman
Buried In Silence: Homosexuality And The Feighner Criteria, Stewart Justman
Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications
The diagnostic revolution that culminated in the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (1980) began with the publication in 1972 of the Feighner criteria, a set of rules for the identification of 16 disorders. While Feighner et al. claim that their diagnostic categories rest on solid data, the fact is that one was soon to be removed by the APA from its classification of mental disorders: homosexuality. However, the anomaly of an extinct category in a list of supposedly validated diagnostic criteria never became a point of discussion, quite as if the …
The Casc Framework: An Assessment Model For Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laurel A. Snider
The Casc Framework: An Assessment Model For Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laurel A. Snider
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
School psychologists pay a critical role in providing assessment and intervention services within the realm of special education. Within this role, they are highly likely to interact with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Students with IDD are characterized by significantly lower than average cognitive and daily living skills that may be comorbid with difficulties with communication, social skills, or other domains. With these differences in mind, dominant assessment practices have been criticized as lacking social and empirical validity when applied to this population. Although students with IDD frequently undergo evaluations, they continue to face significantly poorer post-school outcomes …
What Role Does Age-Associated Neuroplasticity Play In The Efficacy Of Cochlear Implantation?, Jacob Fliegelman
What Role Does Age-Associated Neuroplasticity Play In The Efficacy Of Cochlear Implantation?, Jacob Fliegelman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Bilateral, profound-severe, congenital deafness causes widespread structural and functional changes of the auditory system. In humans, the consequences of these changes are extensive and often include detriments to language acquisition and auditory perception. Fortunately, early intervention methods, such as cochlear implantation, can significantly mitigate inevitable auditory deficiencies. This review begins by briefly addressing early stages of brain development and associated anatomical discrepancies observed in congenitally deaf subjects. Considering the deleterious effects of congenital deafness, neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to rewire itself, is of paramount importance in reversing the auditory impairments. Hence, its incorporation into the methods required for …

For help with their spelling errors, children often turn to spellcheckers integrated in software applications like word processors and search engines. However, existing spellcheckers are usually tuned to the needs of traditional users (i.e., adults) and generally prove unsatisfactory for children. Motivated by this issue, we introduce KidSpell, an English spellchecker oriented to the spelling needs of children. KidSpell applies (i) an encoding strategy for mapping both misspelled words and spelling suggestions to their phonetic keys and (ii) a selection process that prioritizes candidate spelling suggestions that closely align with the misspelled word based on their respective keys. To assess …
Applying A Newly Learned Second Language Dimension To The Unknown: The Influence Of Second Language Mandarin Tones On The Naïve Perception Of Thai Tones, Vance Schaefer, Isabelle Darcy
Applying A Newly Learned Second Language Dimension To The Unknown: The Influence Of Second Language Mandarin Tones On The Naïve Perception Of Thai Tones, Vance Schaefer, Isabelle Darcy
Faculty and Student Publications
This study investigates whether L2 Mandarin learners can generalize experience with Mandarin tones to unfamiliar tones (i.e., Thai). Three language groups-L1 English/L2 Mandarin learners (n=18), L1 Mandarin speakers (n=30), L1 monolingual English speakers (n=23)-were tested on the perception of unfamiliar Thai tones on ABX tasks. L2 Mandarin learners and L1 Mandarin speakers perceived Thai tones more accurately than L1 English non-learners. Mandarin learners L1 speakers showed priming on Mandarin tones on a lexical decision task with repetition priming, suggesting L2 tones had been encoded within lexical representations of L2 Mandarin words. However, results must be interpreted cautiously, with an absence …
Confronting And Condemning “Hard Doctrine,” 1978–2013, Matthew L. Harris
Confronting And Condemning “Hard Doctrine,” 1978–2013, Matthew L. Harris
Mormon Studies Review
Although Spencer W. Kimball’s 1978 revelation in the Salt Lake Temple ended the 126-year-old priesthood and temple ban affecting persons of African descent, questions about racial teachings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lingered. The revelation, canonized as “Official Declaration 2” in Latter-day Saint scripture, failed to repudiate the theology justifying the ban.1 Some members, consequently, continued to assert that black people were cursed, equating their dark skin with misdeeds they allegedly committed in a pre-earth life.2 Anguished over these microaggressions, black Latter-day Saints petitioned church officials to condemn racism within the church as well as remove …
Discipline, Diagnose & Punish: A Critical Analysis Of Ptsd Diagnostication Amongst Syrian Migrants In Jordan, Erik Kramer
Discipline, Diagnose & Punish: A Critical Analysis Of Ptsd Diagnostication Amongst Syrian Migrants In Jordan, Erik Kramer
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This qualitative project seeks to explore sociopolitical factors influencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostication in Syrian migrants living in Jordan. Interviews were performed with twenty-three key informants, comprised of clinicians, organizational staff, and scholars, using semi-structured techniques which were analyzed with grounded theory analytic approaches. The results illuminate the complex social forces governing the practice of PTSD diagnostication in the Syrian migrant population in Jordan, with a focus on the effects of financial pressures. This is the first study to report extensively on the financial pressures affecting PTSD diagnostication in this setting. These data served as rooted substrate for a …

Responding to the call to build teacher interculturality in more dynamic ways, this paper analyzes developmental trajectories of three pre‐service teachers enrolled in a course on language and culture in a master’s in second language teaching program at a U.S. university. From a sociocultural theory perspective, the article illustrates the various ways in which the pre‐service teachers incorporated (or not) the mediational means available to them. The article findings support the claim about the sociocultural nature of human learning, while the analysis informed by a sociocultural perspective on learning explicates why intercultural learning can be more enriching for some participating …

This report synthesizes and evaluates published scientific literature on the environmental occurrence and biomagnification of mercury with emphasis on the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA), California. Mercury forms various compounds, well known for their toxicity in humans and environmental ecosystems. Elemental mercury is transported and distributed by air, water, and sediments. Through the metabolic processes of algae and bacteria, mercury is converted into organic compounds, such as methylmercury (MeHg), which then bioaccumulates up through trophic levels. In fish, it is found primarily in skeletal muscle, while in humans, the primary target organs are the brain and kidneys. Health concerns exist …

This study investigates the second dialect production of Bogota Spanish /s/ in coda position by speakers of three different varieties of Colombian Spanish, who have been in contact in Ciudad Bolivar, a community located in Bogota, Colombia. The study has three aims. First, it will examine the role of phonetic distance in the acquisition of /s/ production. Second, it will determine the linguistic factors that constrain the realization of /s/ sound by the speakers of the three varieties studied. Third, it will look into the role of extralinguistic factors in the production of /s/. A total of 2322 tokens extracted …

Speech Spoken By Familiar People Is More Resistant To Interference By Linguistically Similar Speech, Emma Holmes, Ingrid S. Johnsrude
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
© 2020 American Psychological Association. Understanding speech in adverse conditions is affected by experience-a familiar voice is substantially more intelligible than an unfamiliar voice when competing speech is present, even if the content of the speech (the words) are controlled. This familiar-voice benefit is observed consistently, but its underpinnings are unclear: Do familiar voices simply attract more attention, are they inherently more intelligible because they have predictable acoustic characteristics, or are they more intelligible in a mixture because they are more resistant to interference from other sounds? We recruited pairs of native English-speaking participants who were friends or romantic couples. …

Pupil Dilation Is Sensitive To Semantic Ambiguity And Acoustic Degradation, Mason Kadem, Björn Herrmann, Jennifer M. Rodd, Ingrid S. Johnsrude
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
© The Author(s) 2020. Speech comprehension is challenged by background noise, acoustic interference, and linguistic factors, such as the presence of words with more than one meaning (homonyms and homophones). Previous work suggests that homophony in spoken language increases cognitive demand. Here, we measured pupil dilation—a physiological index of cognitive demand—while listeners heard high-ambiguity sentences, containing words with more than one meaning, or well-matched low-ambiguity sentences without ambiguous words. This semantic-ambiguity manipulation was crossed with an acoustic manipulation in two experiments. In Experiment 1, sentences were masked with 30-talker babble at 0 and +6 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and in …

Studies of American literature and, more specifically, literature by authors of color quite often focus on aspects of “othering”, that is, the practice of separating minority culture and literature from the larger or more dominant culture. Even before the onset of the Civil Rights Era, issues of racism have informed much of the literature of the United States, and just as long as racism has played a role in American literature, scholars, critics, and readers have discussed it. The bulk of criticism discussing African American and Native American literature examines the issues of racism as perpetrated by white society. What …

Parental Decision Making Regarding Cochlear Implant Use In School-Age Children: A Self-Determination Perspective, Myrita S. Wilhite

Hearing parents of children who are deaf face many complex decisions that have life long ramifications. The first decision is whether or not to pursue cochlear implantation, which has become a physician preferred intervention recommendation for deafness. Cochlear implants can provide access to sound that improves auditory experiences. This provides optimism for the facilitation of academic, social, and communication development. The problem lies in the variability found in the consistency of the use of cochlear implants. Non-use and inconsistent use of the device is related to less than favorable speech, language, and academic outcomes. There is little understanding of what …

Given the historic underrepresentation of minority and low-income students in gifted programs, this study sought to address the unique characteristics of the gifted student while also considering the uniqueness of the student’s school community. The initial design compared the use of dynamic intellectual assessment to traditional (or static) assessment for identifying eligibility in such programs. COVID-19 restrictions determined a redesign, since this national emergency precluded access to school buildings by students, staff, and families, which meant the comparison of assessment instruments would not be possible. As a result, a qualitative case study was employed, examining related research questions important to …
